Calls from a multiple olympic and world champions for athletes to unionize is an effort to unify professional track and field athletes from around the world see just how the boys we hear from triple jump legend Christian Taylor about his new initiative. Hello iraqs top shiite cleric is urging the military and police to avoid using Excessive Force against protesters grand ayatollah sistani says the government must respond as quickly as possible to demonstrators demands overnight Security Forces shot dead at least 5 protest hours in the southern city. After reports crowds were trying to break into government buildings troops also broke up a sit in at the entrance of a middle class at a port thats iraqs main port for oil and food. And at least 6 protesters were also shot dead in the capital baghdad on thursday skirmishes. Where Security Forces used live ammunition demonstrators are angry at the lack of Public Services political overhaul to get an update from the june whos joining us from baghdad so that death toll seems to continuously rise over in iraq mohammad and i know that youve been out speaking to the protestors what have they been telling you about their demands. Well that it was quite interesting today because we were expecting it to be a much more cautious atmosphere the fact that we arrived today and there was this news that had been reported overnight about the 7 protesters being killed the bus and 5 protesters being killed in but that so we assumed that perhaps people were going to be more on guard what we saw was quite the opposite the atmosphere in and around to her square was quite festive it was jubilant what we really since most was resolve protesters that were committed to keep coming out demonstrators who are determined to effect some kind of change who say they want to continue to raise their voices until the government really heeds what they are saying and really starts trying to build a better safer more prosperous future for it off and for it avis but what we saw today wasnt just expressions of political discontent we saw a lot of expression of creativity we spoke to actors and directors who were putting on plays in the street and acting what they thought was going on when it comes to and often their regional and International Allies we saw musicians playing the National Anthem trying to really boost the morale of the protesters that continue to come out im in and women and children of all ages across the social spectrum here in iraq not just people from but that people who have traveled from other parts of iraq to comfortable that to be part of what they are calling this uprising now we asked them continuously what they thought about the fact that it doesnt seem like the government is doing much to respond to their demands many of them told me that they thought when they heard these officials speaking on the airwaves here that it was like they were almost in a different world and yet despite all of that despite the specter of danger despite the violence thats been mounting across the country being directed at the protesters they say they are resolved to continue coming out into the streets day after day week after week until something is done to meet their demands and what is it that the government is doing or could be doing. Well look the government has promised various things in the last week you heard the president here say that potentially the Prime Minister might resign if there was a committee that would amend the constitution if the conditions were right to make sure that there was a government in place there was going to be a committee that was going to meet to try to ensure that all of this was Going Forward but really nothing solid has come out of any governmental body since then weve heard many government officials the past few days speak of trying to implement Economic Reforms trying to do more to ensure that wealth is going into the hands of the iraqi people and to diversify the economy but nothing really concrete answering what the protesters are asking for so because of that the demonstrators say they dont believe the officials but they are going to continue to protest and have their voices heard that. Thank you for that update from baghdad well iran says its forces have shot down what its calling a foreign drone it reportedly happened over the city of mush are in the south the provincial governor says parts of the wreckage have been recovered in june to iran shut down a u. S. Drone saying that it had violated its airspace and an earthquake in northwestern iran has killed at least 6 people hundreds more were injured the magnitude 5. 9 quake struck in the east as are based on province and there were dozens of aftershocks reported turkish and Russian Troops have been conducting a 3rd round of joint military patrols in syria its part of an agreement between anchor on moscow to remove kurdish fighters from an area turkey wants to establish a safe zone turkey says it plans to resettle as many as 2000000 Syrian Refugees in the area has some had but it has more from gaziantep near the turkey syria border. So this is what is happening now the joint patrols will be traveling through the area of us which is the obviously all the way to maliki on the border with iraq they wont be able to get into the city of commission because it is not part of the sochi agree of it and because the Syrian Government troops maintains a minute to presence inside the city off. And then maliki the 2nd phase would be to. Conduct those patrols in combine the around could barely tell if id been busy and this is where you have some problems because russia says that all the white bits you find to have pulled out from those areas something which is contested by to you turkey Still Believes of those fighters are still operating of those areas along with their weapons and this is why they would like to ensure through their joint patrols that everyone has left at a later stage turkey is intending to. Set up observation post along the safe zone of the area thats russias from and by leaky all the way to words. To ensure that we as their fighters not stage any come back to the areas over the border with turkey well turkey says it will send captured eisel members back to their countries beginning monday even if their citizenship has been revoked the interior minister is still a man so who accused western countries over a lack of cooperation on the matter he says europe is creating a new type of International Law where prisoners of war are tried where they are caught turkey says its captured around 1200. 00 eisel fighters 287. 00 of which were obtained during recent operations in northeast syria. Now the International Court of justice said it will hear a case filed by ukraine against russia it concerns moscows a legit support of pro russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine this decision comes as ukraines army and russia backed separatists are set to withdraw more troops from the front line in ukraine on saturday the planned exit is part of a series of measures aimed at ending a conflict thats killed more than 13000 people just in the last 5 years lets bring in step process and shes joining us from moscow to tall it to talk to us that about the i. C. J. Ruling and what it means for both ukraine and russia. Well this was a very convincing win for for ukraine and against russia a majority of the judges in the International Court have decided that that russias case can be heard and has rejected the objections to russia has because russia said that the court doesnt have jurisdiction and basically ukraine and russia could still sort it out but the judges decided that at the time of the filing of this this lawsuit by ukraine early 2017 all options were exhausted it was a deadlock between the 2 countries and thats why the court now wants to look into this case its basically 2 cases one is financing of terrorist organizations by russia basically talking about the separatist groups in the east of ukraine and the other one is a Racial Discrimination in crimea which is another part of ukraine which was annexed by russia in 2014 and this is a talking about the tartarus and the ukrainian minority in that country basically the court will now take a couple of years probably it will take quite a while to hear this case but if theres an outcome and when there is an outcome then this will be binding but it doesnt have any sanctions or means to enforce this ruling but of course its for international means it is a strong measure instrument that ukraine now has in its hands towards russia all right stuff awesome thank you for that update from moscow hundreds of palestinians have gathered along the gaza Israel Border fence for the weekly friday of protests the socalled great march a return rallies began last march where matheson has more from the border. Gazas ministry of health says at least 10 people have been injured in protests at 5 different points up and down the separation friends which splits gaza from israel in the protests that are being held today the latest protests as part of the great march of return but the crowds here much smaller than weve seen in the past and perhaps not surprising because just a week ago gaza and israel were firing rockets at each other to the south of where im standing now a 27 year old palestinian man was killed in that exchange of fire but its interesting to note that very shortly after the rocket attack the Israeli Government put out a statement saying that it held the leader of a single Islamic Jihad group in gaza responsible for that attack it didnt blame anybody else it just specified this particular leader spool on a few days and on why didnt stay a delegation from hamas went to cairo egypt is a key negotiator in this fragile cease fire that exists between gaza and israel and the belief here in gaza is that hamas was keen to show the gyptian that they were still committed to the Peace Process to the cease fire that has been continuing on between gaza and israel you know if you take both of those events together you get a sense that both sides are trying very hard to keep control of the situation and run keep the risk of violence very low the reason for this could be political israel is in the process of trying to pull together a government and the palestinians for the 1st time since 2006 are going to be voting in elections as well no date for those elections has been organized and has been negotiation about the format of what is going to happen but there is a belief here in gaza that hamas is trying to impress on people that its being the Controlling Party in gaza has control of security here as well and thats very important of course in the run up to these elections. Hong kong protesters are mourning the death of a student who fell from a building during a demonstration on monday 22 year old child she locked died of his injuries on friday people have gathered for a vigil at the carpark where he fell students have been at the forefront of months of protests in hong kong and there are fears chows death could spark more unrest sarah car cause more from hong kong. The hospital confirms the students death on friday morning child she looks suffered a brain injury after falling from a car park during a protest on monday but after 2 operations he died of a cardiac arrest because of course. The family wants to tell the media and the people of hong kong thank you very much for showing your support and encouragement to Queen Elizabeth hospital in the past few days they are very thankful. Child was a Computer Science undergraduate at the Hong Kong University of science and technology fried i was the Graduation Ceremony for many of the students that event became a memorial as his colleagues paid tribute to the 22 year old i think its a very grave day and we all have we all have i think a lot of humble people not just for us the members have a man talk operation for this but still when it comes to fact it hurts a lot this could be the 1st death as a direct result of the confrontations between police and protesters in hong kong the Antigovernment Movement blames the police for chalis injury which occurred when tear gas was fired on students during a dispersal operation he was trying to avoid i am from the police but you can. Call him from cop. Show today if we want. And also locked in our government the police to launch a free pass because the government has expressed its regret and sorrow over the death of the 22 year old student. And standing in sympathies to the family but this incident is lucky to further anger the Antigovernment Movement more protests is expected to join demonstrations this weekend. High profile prodemocracy activists joshua warm and agnes chow have called on protesters to join the rallies which are now in their 5th month they were charged with organizing a Legal Assembly in june before Fridays Court appearance they demanded an independent Police Inquiry into what they describe as Excessive Force being used on protesters its now is the time for the government to step up the in the band as investigation on the clash with aging know and seek for truth and justice. The police have denied any wrongdoing and will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the students death sarah clarke aljazeera Hong Kong Well joseph chang is a retired professor and senior figure in the prodemocracy movement in hong kong he says they are worried about spacings reaction we are afraid that the chinese authorities will increase step pressure on hong kong exerting pressure on kerry lamb and ministration to have to deal with the article 23 legislation the land and mr now enjoys very very extensive powers through of is activation of the emergency regulations all the loans as symbolized by the introduction of this and the mass law it is expected. To control over the internet we just rely on. Which is the larger point better protestants for communications purposes and there is a danger there the district comes the elections the local you know actually its scheduled at the end of the month maybe postponed. More ahead on the aljazeera news hour including. Chiles president announces new measures to crack down on violent protests. Dozens of bush fires burn across eastern australia prompting a Record Number of emergency warnings. And in sport the phoenix suns struggle to cope with the miami heat action from the n. B. A. Coming up a little later in the program. But 1st brazils top court has overturned a law requiring convicted criminals to go to jail after losing their 1st appeal the court decided that a person can only be jailed after all of their appeals have been exhausted the ruling means that the former president luisa noster Lula Da Silva and thousands of prisoners could be released lugo a sense of prison in april last year as part of a corruption investigation but so bring in terrorism joining us from one a series what are the chances that lula will be free today. Well that the big question that goes for waiting for him outside the prison in the city of. It nobody really knows how long it could take right now that we know that there are people waiting for him to be released immediately but its not clear this is going to be a very fast process 1st is that to a judge to include it and of course theres always the possibility. Of legal procedures that complicate the whole process while hes there just a while ago hes lawyers entered the prison in order to talk to him and what he wants and what theyre saying is that they will request he immediately we know that he is also requesting the whole case against him. To be cant tell them that one has been a very very strong request because hes been one painting of the hes being politically persecuted. And that the whole case against him has been false and created by the opposition and all of this is happening after the Supreme Court over overturned a ruling that that criminal convicted criminal can need to remain in prison one of his 1st appeal while the situation from now on is that that person could remain free and till he has exhausted all the options in order to defend his case in any type of investigation and this of course affect not only a former president but also thousands of other people in the country among them politician businessmen im one others that have been part of what is known at the carwash operation because the large just corruption investigation in brazil history anything led by judges that are your mortal that your model is currently the minister of justice. What can i do and you can method and get impartiality and have been severely question especially after some audio recordings where revie it was revealed that he was working along prosecutors in order to in jail it would and this is something that is banned by law so this cold case has polarized Brazilian Society like it did in the past and while many in brazil can get it and think about it in a fent they see him as a people man as a man that lifted millions out of poverty there are many in the country that see him and they blame him for the corruption that happened while he was in office ok its a razor thank you for that update from one of sirees lets not speak to john watson is a spokesperson for the legal team working for brazils former president Lula Da Silva hes joining us from london thanks very much for your time with us on the aljazeera news hour so this Court Decision could possibly affect Lula Da Silva and whether hes freed from prison or not how likely is it that he is free today terrorism was just saying that the legal team has now gone inside the prison. Thats right president lulas lawyers christianized on in mountains and alaska to chevys on in mountains have now filed the petition to the 12 federal Circuit Court could achieve to them on the Immediate Release of president lula and if the rule of law is have upheld and followed president lula will be released today if he is not that is because of his further political interference in the legal case with president lula so the stakes couldnt be any higher today and the eyes of the world of on brazil and the brazilian legal system may have a chance to show the world that the rule of law is it is strong and the courts can to provide thing is there any scenario that you for see that could complicate. His his freedom or his posture freedom today. Well the judge in this District Court has a track record herself of being biased against lula so it does beg the question what is going to happen today and we dont yet know we are very hopeful if the rule of law is followed the president to those who should never have been in put in jail anyway is released immediately to die however as we assume for out this process and for the car while car wash operation it is a highly biased process so unfortunately we cant guarantee his relays but. If the rule of law is followed he will be a free man later today and the reaction from the prosecutors from the carwash probe to the court ruling decision is that they say this decision quote goes against the sentiment of repudiating impunity and the fight against corruption what is your reaction to what they have to say. Corruption must be prosecuted but the prosecution must to be free and fair and the carwash prosecutors have throughout the process not followed a free and fair process so no one is saying the prosecute corruption shouldnt be prosecuted but their own actions the actions of the prosecutors have coles called into question the decisions that they have taken so the responsibility is with the prosecutors and the ferry the they have done they have throughout the process of following the rule of law all president lula has always asked for is a fair trial and a fair hearing it has never happened so we will continue to fight and when president little is as of we will continue to fight for his justice because so far he has he has not had the fair trial and after all no one is above the law but equally no one should be beneath the law and let me just ask you about his political ambitions because of course this courts decision doesnt mean that he can return to power unless he can get his criminal conviction overturned from what we understand by appeal is that something that his legal team is planning to do. Well president lula is innocent hes a victim of the misuse of law for political purposes so little is quite clear to all of his legal team that we are going to continue to fight for justice and to prove the case against him were completely fabricated from from day one a little bit of a mind one of the most important political figures in purcell whether hes allowed to stand or not is really immaterial at this point because we are going to continue to fight for justice and brazil is now at a crossroads it has a big choice to make in the eyes of the world on the brazilian judicial including lots of the United Nations Human Rights Committee in geneva all right so we will wait to see what happens thank you for your time john watts thanks for speaking to us from london. Chiles president has announced new measures to clamp down on violence as demonstrations continue for a 3rd week Sebastian Pinera proposed laws would toughen penalties for looting and rioting our latin america editor of c. N. N. Reports from santiago. Its been 21 days of mass disturbances and demonstrations in chile and amid mounting criticism for not controlling the violence that often accompanies peaceful protests president of us jumping into address the nation with a series of measures getting. We want to announce a public agenda to strengthen public order and better safeguard our Citizen Security weve lived days of tremendous violence vandalism and delinquency provoked in most cases by groups of organized crime. The templin plan includes outlawing barricades and the use of masks and other methods to disguise ones face including and used in the role of Intelligence Services and the use of helicopters during protests among others. Wednesday the uptown headquarters of the conservative party which is part of being it is governing coalition were attacked. Ransacked but if. We are facing coordinated and organized groups who are acting in a directed way we need to investigate this so that we can find the leaders of these violent groups who are causing destruction in our Intelligence System wasnt prepared for this type of urban violence. The threat of higher penalties hasnt dissuaded protesters perhaps not surprisingly the president s new and outrageous security measures coincide with the mass demonstrations moving uptown to an area that had been considered off limits a kind of always a peace in the middle of 3 weeks of demonstrations because you can see this area which is the epicenter if you like the headquarters of the biggest businesses in the country are now being closed and surrounded by protesters. While most protest is insist they dont support violence some argue the current upheaval is a necessary evil. Piniella says he listens to peaceful protests but what about those who have been demonstrating for more than 4 years but better pensions if those who started those protests had written a letter to the president he said rushing the metro with the president listened no. Fire fighters in the australian state of New South Wales say theyre in unchartered territory with more than a dozen bushfires posing a severe risk the reports of people being trapped in their homes victoria be handsome latest. Every summer parts of australia go up in flames and in hot windy conditions wild bushfires the common but this season an extended drought has caused the fires to. Spread more rapidly than usual it was a sort of came over our house house yesterday afternoon and then died down i have no idea and then with their winnings at lunchtimes picked off again so i think its all sort of complete out of hand at the mine if it out of control here. The bushfires in New South Wales and queensland cover a 1000 kilometer stretch of Countryside Police have voted 4 and a half 1000 people to leave their homes along queenslands Sunshine Coast local radio stations have stopped normal programming instead theyre broadcasting advice about how to survive a house fire and local Officials Say theyre struggling to get the bushfires under control because of the drawn to the fuel and the flammability of the fuel even the smallest of embers landing and taking hold and developing as you fars very quickly so you end up getting this exponential rapid spread of the mine far from moving across the landscape and unfortunately we can expect more of that to die for those whose homes are in danger difficult decisions will have to be made by my company when you go. Yeah as captain im going to tiger woods and sport there is an unusual Team Selection for next months president s cup play i will be here a little later to explain. Hello there its a most secure picture across much of the middle east what were all saying is a fair amount of class but not really bringing much with it in the way of rain or even some mountain snow but we could be saying of the next couple days isnt working the way along will sudden sections of iran is a disturbance work its way through the gulf and certainly through saturday and sunday some coastal showers are likely its a warm couple of days ahead through the eastern end of the med 26th and 27 degrees celsius in beirut under those clear sunny skies as its a sunny more rain showers likely as we head through those coastal areas of the gold so thats pretty much where the story is we had crossed into the Arabian Peninsula its mostly clare its mostly dry temperatures not too bad 31. 00 celsius in doha on saturday and then that temperature a few degrees lower as on sunday we have got the chance of some clavicles as much as a maybe even a thunderstorm that could actually work its way eastwards and across into abu dhabi as well on the some rain actually on the way through eastern sections of south africa no particular coming from this cloud is pushing offshore as you can see in the last few hours time which is a not too bad so its a dried a south in cape town with a high of 24 scattered thunderstorms in johannesburg and durban and then more chance of rain charles as we head off into sunday with a high of 23 and. A story of blackmail. Youll have to kill i have strangled i have a story of current catch a lot of the fear is real. Passion. And a very sincere just. The u. S. Is a tipping point. To the u. S. Impeachment inquiry in the acting white house chief of staff has defied a subpoena ordering him to testify at the hearing the Committee Investigating donald trump wanted Mick Mulvaney to explain why the office of management and budget blocked millions of dollars in aid to ukraine in august the inquiry suspects President Trump withheld aid to pressure kiev to investigate his political rival joe biden and his son hunter biden previously denied the link lets bring in our White House Correspondent kimberly. Hi kimberly so now that the acting white house chief of staff has skipped the hearing what happens next. Well were looking ahead to the public hearings that will Begin Next Week and of course what the democratic investigators are building is given the fact that the white house has a string of witnesses now that have not shown including most recently the acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney that this is part of a case building towards articles of impeachment with respect to obstruction of justice now the u. S. President just left the white house he had a little chopper talk as we call it where he speaks to reporters before he gets on board his helicopter to prepare to travel to florida and he was asked about what has been essentially a week of very damaging testimony for the president up on capitol hill the president said hes not concerned at all about the testimony so far he says that many of these people that are testify are people that dont like donald trump and fact he said that democrats have essentially gone all over washington looking for 10 people that dont like him and called them to testify he says the only thing that matters is the transcript of his telephone call in july with the ukrainian president now he goes on to call these public hearings a hoax he also says the whole thing is a scam and he also alleges that he is. No he is the most transparent president no one is more transparent than him and he says that if there is a desire for a transcript released of another telephone call that he had with the ukrainian president he says hed be happy to release the one of the call he had with the ukrainian president back in april as well and can really how much anticipation is there around the hearings going public in just a few days time. Theres an enormous amount of anticipation about this because till now most of this has been in secret and that is really has been a major republican talking point that this is not a fair process because it has been behind closed doors because the only thing that people know about these hearings or what the politicians are sharing or whats being leaked all of that changes on wednesday when the 1st of the public hearings begin but once again this is something that the white house says its not worried about while at the same time saying that what they believe needs to be public is the name of the whistleblower that 1st brought this to light thats unlikely to happen in fact the whistle blowers Attorney Says he is protecting his client given the fact that he believes some of the wording the president has been using recently about the whistleblower is threatening his safety all right kimberly thank you for that update from just outside the white house lets speak to Simon Rosenberg hes the president and founder of the new Democrat Network and the new policy institute his joining us from washington as well thanks for being with us on the aljazeera news hour well talk about the hearings going public in a moment but 1st let me just ask you about motivating me because his decision not to show up is really in line with the decision weve seen from other officials who were ordered by the president not to cooperate with this investigation how does that if how does that affect the hearings if it does at all. Well i think as your correspondent said it contributes to the case where the obstruction of congress and the inability for you know that the white house doesnt have the ability not to cooperate and youve seen now many witnesses who work in the government who have come forward to cooperate with congress and those that havent are in legal jeopardy and are also preventing the congress from an acting a legitimate investigation so my own my own view about where things stand is that and i want to agree with your correspondent that this was a really bad week for the president we now know not only have documentarian evidence that the president committed crimes bribery extortion election law the violations but we now have people who have cooperated all this in their own testimony including his own political appointee the European Union embassador sunland and so this is this is a fairly clear cut case in my mind and i think that whats going to happen as this week is that the witnesses who have been testifying behind closed doors are going to become public and this will be now far more front and center in the in the minds of the American People than it was yet talk us through the significance of this actually going public and and what this means. Well whats amazing about the polling in the u. S. Is you already have 50 percent or so of the American People ready to remove the president right i mean im still shocked that that number is that high at this point and so this isnt going his way this isnt going the president s way anyway and youre going to see now for example the 1st person testifying on wednesday is a west point grad somebody who served in the American Military has an unimpeachable record of Public Service to the United States he was he was asked to join the Trump Administration by mike pump a oh hes not a never trumper hes not a democrat hes a lifelong you know patriot of the United States whos going to be testifying on wednesday that the president clearly broke laws and so were facing a very difficult situation here in the u. S. Where you know the president who has been a reckless actor heard many ways over many years now is given as clear documentarian evidence of lawbreaking how Congress Responds to that over the next 6 months or so is going to be one of the main challenges weve already heard from the republicans in the senate that they are unlikely to convict him and so well see what happens i mean those i make i think are measuring the polls is now going to be a get a poll is what youre mentioning the polls just moments ago and repression approval of the president does remain very high. Sort of i mean you know i mean the truth is the president is the most unpopular 1st term president in the history of polling in the United States theres never been a president whos had the kind of poll numbers that hes had for the length of time that hes had and even in some polls you have seeing his Approval Rating among republicans drop from 90 a percent or so down to 75 percent but keep in mind one thing one of the reasons his poll numbers of republicans remain so high is that many republicans who used to support him dont support him anymore and arent republicans any longer so the pool of people who consider themselves republicans has shrunk down to mainly Trump Supporters and so that number is always going to stay pretty high the president is losing this debate with the public its clear that 505152 percent of the country is ready to move on to another president but weve got a long way to go in the way this plays out in the congressional process when pietschmann itself which could go on i think for up to another 6 months or so right Simon Rosenberg thank you for joining us from washington. U. Give you a good deal if they know that youre going to actively campaign against it well heres literally what most of you going to be doing but piers i have been talking to you but now look at what the conservative party of Prime Minister Boris Johnson made of it in a twitter post actively campaign against. That misleading it it provoked anger and ridicule from some but the conservatives stood by their video this is actually right now what we are concerned about a its not the deep fakes its what we would call it cheap fake so something that has been edited with a little bit of the Video Editing software doesnt have to be complicated but its still changing the entire message after video and it is something that is performing very well on line and has a tendency to go viral. The labor partys now taken a well known image from Boris Johnsons 2016 bricks it campaign with a misleading claim about Health Spending on the side of a bus and twisted it to attack his new bricks it plan made his opponents of attack very for making outlandish claims but theyre not backing down either in the u. K. Political advertising on t. V. And radio is restricted to a very few tightly regulated slots for each party making the online arena story important twitters decision to scrap political advertising can prevent misleading or downright fake content being shared meanwhile facebook has chosen not to block a misleading political post insisting it cant act as a censor since the 2016 brets at referendum social Media Companies say theyve got better at dealing with fake accounts and fake news but it took facebook 2 years to show the world misleading referendum advertising like this different groups got different versions of the charts we dont know who got whats or why im not kind of microtargeting is going to be a big feature of this Election Campaign when you get a leaflet through your door by a Political Party it says on it it has to have by law a name and an address on it to say whos responsible for that theres no such rule online and so when you see an online advert its a lot harder for you to know who sent it to you and whos paying for it and those are really really important questions for transparency its always the golden question how this actually swings election and really unknown how any form of support doesnt actually affects peoples decisions to get out and vote in the day but the worry here is that because its very hard to scrutinise it could be having an impact that we are absolutely on the way so when britain elects a new parliament in a few weeks time one crucial factor could be the growing mountain of fake political content to. The Chinese Communist party uses tactic as methods to suppress its own people that would be horrifyingly familiar to former east germanys we all must everyone in this room has a duty we must recognize the free nations are in competition of values with those and free nations. Cain is in berlin and has been hearing the stories of some who attempted the perilous journey to freedom in the west and those who stayed behind the iron curtain on a sunny day dagmar zim dawn likes to walk her dog on bare now washed its a simple pleasure she was denied for much of her adult life because this was where the berlin wall once stood guarded by soldiers with orders to shoot to kill tomorrow tuchmans or her manner in everyday life the wall played a role in that it was just there is stands before you if youre standing in front of it you just had to accept it. August 1961 the height of the cold war when communist control of the east drove many thousands to flee west using the open border in berlin causing a brain drain the east felt could not continue. So they built the wall separating families and friends overnight and when the 1st bricks were laid here rows of houses were blocked off meaning those who wanted to get out had to jump from the upper windows onto the street in the west. But as the wall became more solid soon that avenue of escape was blocked off and what became known as the death street divided the city and so people had to think much more creatively about how they could free communism. People like who bed holbein as a young man he swam across a guarded waterway to reach the west and then decided he wanted others to be free to so he helped build a tunnel under the center of the city in all 57. 00 people crawled through this space to freedom including his own mother it was a tremendous feeling taking part in possibly helping your relatives and friends come over but at the same time it was a strain because i had only just survived the Border Crossing myself and thought man if something happens to me here and its twice as bad something did happen to fall to heintz as a student he volunteered to help people flee the east bringing out dozens of refugees over several months using a car with diplomatic plates and adapted to allow people to hide from view but then one day he was caught they had already left saying he had the diplomat they had which they confronted me to. Their healthy escapees who didnt make it. They had a car i mean what else is there to learn learned in the end to the 2 German Governments agreed a prisoner swaps of spent less than a year in custody as time wore on most people grew used to the ugly gray barrier that divided the city but then in november 1989 came the moment many thought might never happen a wave of peaceful protests swept through the city and because the soviet government would not help the armed guard stood powerless as people partied on the wall and then finally tore it down. Very little of what the east German Government called the anti fascist protection barriers still remains many berliners are too young to know 1st hand what it was like to live in a divided city for those like dagmar who do saturday will be a poignant day dominic kane aljazeera at the berlin wall memorial.
