Continues even as a new Prime Minister is sworn in. Turkey opens its border with greece saying it wont stop refugees and migrants trying to cross into europe. In this have a decisive win in the South Carolina democratic primary a former u. S. Vice president has secured almost half the votes with Bernie Sanders coming a distant 2nd he got about 20 percent South Carolina as the 1st Southern State to vote in the process to select the candidate who will take on donald trump in novembers president ial election is also the 1st state with a large black population africanamericans are a key element of the Democratic Partys support. Oh you were knocked down counted out lucky on prices your cat paid the. Rest days ago the press and the promise of your crack this candidacy dead. Now thanks to all of your heart of the democratic right we just run and weve run big because. Well there are 54 delegates up for grabs in South Carolina and biden now has the opportunity to draw level with Bernie Sanders in the overall number of delegates gained so far South Carolina comes just days before the all important super tuesday when a quarter of all remaining delegates allocated it takes place in 14 states plus American Samoa all on the same day super tuesday well all same Mike Bloomberg 1st appearance on the ballot the former new york mayor has not competed in the votes helped save far but he saunders has conceded defeat in South Carolina and hes now banking on a big win on super tuesday tonight we did not win in South Carolina. A lot review only defeat there a lot of states in this country nobody wins a wall i want to congratulate joe barden on his victory tonight the. Not old we had the super tuesday a good 3rd of the well out there is on the gallagher is with the Biden Campaign in columbia South Carolina. To say this is a boost for the Biden Campaign would be an understatement this is the 1st but surely diverse state in these primaries so far member we had New Hampshire we had iowa we had nevada here we have a large africanamerican population hispanic population this has given joe biden the legitimacy and the momentum he needs going into super tuesday a lot of moderate people in the Democratic Party have been looking for a moderate candidate to take on Bernie Sanders they may have just found him in joe biden because his lead was getting eaten into steadily as we were running up to this primary Bernie Sanders was making traction with young black men 9 year olds tom steyer was spending a fortune and some of the polls how Bernie Sanders within the margin of error but the polls close at 7 oclock tonight within minutes they were declaring joe biden as the winner of the South Carolina primary so this is more than just a boost this is given joe biden the energy needs hes given his supporters the energy they need and all those people who will vote on super tuesday 14 states on American Samoa will dish out almost a 3rd of all the delegates is a potentially Game Changing day in politics and by it now its looking way way stronger than he has in the past for the billionaire told in style is projected to come in 3rd place in South Carolina and has dropped out of the race that voters have been a major target of his campaign the environmentalist spent more than 18000000. 00 in South Carolina hes been a fierce critic of President Trump and has portrayed himself as a political outside. Are at this point now because youre an assistant professor of Political Science at Howard University shes joining us live from washington d. C. Thanks for talking to us what does the South Carolina vote actually tell us about the Biden Campaign. Well i think it tells us that the Biden Campaign is very much alive and that black voters will be decisive particularly black women i think that was one of the things that went under and recognize i mean we talk about the black vote but i dont think we talk enough about black women who have been really steadfast supporters of the Democratic Party and have shown themselves time and again to turn out to save the party in certain respects so i think this is a big victory for joe biden but it was also a big victory for black women and how indicative would you say is the result of South Carolina. What is to come in all the Southern States where there are large Diverse Communities particularly the Africanamerican Community will it be replicated i dont know if you will necessarily be the trouncing that joe biden had against its competitors tonight but certainly hes racked up some important endorsements in virginia from Tim Kaine Collen all red in texas so i think he is showing that the Southern States with large black populations are in fact where hes going to spend his time i mean North Carolina just to the north or South Carolina is also an important place so i think joe biden is certainly going to focus on this reliable segment of the democratic electorate because there is no one who can claim victory as a democratic nominee who cannot win black voters and we often talk about the black vote the africanamerican vote in the United States particularly in the Southern States but its not an amorphous mass is it there are distinctions youve already said the black women in particular have come out in support of what about the youth. Well the youth vote i think is very much geared toward Bernie Sanders that was shown in South Carolina but the problem with youth voters is they dont show up but who does show up older people and women and so when we look at these young voters say the 18 to 44 or so crowd they came out but only about 30 percent of them came out and i think its also important to note that in north in North Carolina this weekend in charlotte which is just above the border of the northern part of that carolina with a major sporting event that celebrates h. B. C. You athletics and a lot of young people are likely found themselves in charlotte this weekend and not in South Carolina where they dont have early voting so that might have actually cut into or sander support because those folks werent there it but who were there older black voters and black women now historical precedent suggests that the black vote in the democratic primaries basically in dorseys who eventually does become the Democratic Party candidates to run for president come with their full suggests that biden is likely to be self Bernie Sanders. I dont know if hell do that i think its still too early to tell and certainly well have a better picture of this on wednesday but i think it will be probably by july when the convention is held in milwaukee a dead heat between joe biden and Bernie Sanders because no one is projected to have a majority of the delegates theyre going to need by the time the Convention Comes so i think it will be a knockdown drag out fight and i think Bernie Sanders has not proven himself to older black voters yet i think young people are very much in thrall with his campaign but he has not been able to prove to black folks whove been around for a very long time that he is the man and that they in gym class whos seen both of these men up close for over 20 years now in door thing joe biden perhaps signals to black people in other places that he might be the better more reliable candidate Bernie Sanders who doesnt seem to have been able to build those coalitions and build that passion among this very reliable and very important boat base of voters where the Democratic Party and i wonder if you could explain for us for those of us outside of the United States why is it why does it appear that the black american vote the africanamerican vote in the United States appears to be so vastly different in terms of its concerns from the white because up until now weve seen Bernie Sanders trump virtually all of the caucuses in the primaries so far and yet come South Carolina and the 1st significant black contribution to this process and its completely. Well i think black people share many of the same interests as white folks i mean if you look at a state like South Carolina there are 14 counties that dont actually have access to obstetric care for pregnant women so there are issues Like Health Care College Affordability and things like that there are all these groups share but i think joe biden has proven to black people that he is able to get it done i think Bernie Sanders has been in washington for 30 years and people didnt really have any knowledge of who he was until these last 6 or so years so he didnt really make any overtures and he had built that goodwill with black voters and black voters are also very pragmatic i think Bernie Sanders has a lot of ideas and certainly he speaks to many of their interests but i dont know that black voters trust that he has the Political Capital to get it done as a black vote is a very pragmatic voters they have to be our very lives depend on it and we know that sometimes we cant count on just big ideas we need to pick the person that will do the least harm and also potentially do the most good that we can count on and so it doesnt appear that Bernie Sanders has been able to convey that message yet because a good to talk to you thank you very much. Thank you. I was saying in america but another major story and that is a state of emergency having been declared in the state of washington after a man died there of coronavirus President Trump called for calm after confirming the 1st step in the u. S. From the disease the white house also announced additional travel restrictions affecting iran parts of italy and south korea which have emerged as major hotspots the president s also considering closing the border with mexico and thats despite mexico having had only 4 confirmed cases additional cases in the United States are likely. But healthy individuals should be able to fully recover and we think that will be safe and that we can make. With great surety now that weve gotten from e. U. With this problem they should be able to recover should they contract the virus so Healthy People if you healthy. You will probably. Go through a process and youll be fine and as our correspondent reza in jordan now reports the feste death in the u. S. From corona virus raises questions about how the disease is transmitted and we dont know how this person was infected but Washington State officials did say that the man who was in his fiftys did have preexisting Health Conditions and Infectious Disease experts say those are the people who are most at risk of contracting the virus and having an adverse effect from it from becoming very very sick or possibly dying from corona virus for everyone else people who are generally considered healthy they might develop worst a bad cold or a moderate cold but their immune systems are supposedly Strong Enough to withstand the virus now we dont know anything more about where this man had been before he was exposed to the virus and that is something which Infectious Disease experts are now trying to determine theyre particularly concerned because there have been at least 3 or 4 counties its now on the u. S. West coast where there wasnt any prior travel to a country where the disease has infected hundreds of people notably china or south korea or italy those are the 3 countries that have the largest numbers of cases right now. And australia has suffered its 1st casualty from corona virus he was a man who became sick on the diamond princess cruise ship he was 78 and had been evacuated from the ship to a hospital in perth thats where he died the mans wife is also being treated one of 25 people in australia who are in quarantine and it brings the global death toll to almost 3000.
