And youre watching aljazeera is special coverage of the u. S. Super tuesday president ial primaries this is the biggest night of the campaign in the race to the white house and to find out who will run against donald trump in november 14 states and one territory have been voting on super tuesday the results have been coming in throughout the evening and
Richelle Carey
has been keeping track of all of them bring us up to speed with the latest lets give you the lay of the land of the states that are projected 1st to go to
Vice President
joe biden lets do that 1st ok so massachusetts yes that is the home state of senator
Elizabeth Warren
that is projected to go to joe biden as his minnesota home state of any color sure she of course dropped out of the race about 48 hours ago for her support behind joe biden its safe to assume that probably did make a difference he also did incredibly well in oklahoma arkansas tennessee alabama
North Carolina
and virginia so those are all the states that go to joe biden just a reminder of the way this works this is not winner take all the delegates are awarded proportionally so if you win if youre in 1st place you will get the most votes but you do not get all of the votes and you also have to get at least 15 percent to get any delegates at all
Bernie Sanders
is projected to win california thats a huge haul there is more than 400. 00 delegates up for grabs there what is still not known because the counting is not done is actually by how much he will win so thats were not quite sure how many delegates he will get how many joe biden will get and perhaps if
Elizabeth Warren
gets some delegates as well so also we do know that utah colorado and
Bernie Sanders
home state of vermont are all in the
Bernie Sanders
column so joe biden has taken the lead in the projected delegate count he. 360
Bernie Sanders
is a 380 might bloomberg 30
Elizabeth Warren
20 now a key state that we also have not called it is tex. Says there are people that still have not voted in texas the the polls close 4 hours ago there are people
Still Standing
in line to vote in texas so it could be a while before were able to call that stated and joe biden and
Bernie Sanders
are running neck and neck in texas for the republican primary yes donald trump is winning in all of these states but lets do this anyway you can see all the states in red were theres california utah colorado oklahoma texas arkansas tennessee
North Carolina
alabama vermont. Massachusetts those are the states that donald trump is winning theres many states actually that are not even having a primary because its a given that donald trump is going to win so that is the lay of the land right now as again as i said waiting on more specifics from california wearing for specifics from texas as well those are really states with a lot of delegates once we have them we will let you know folly thank you richelle well check in with you later of course now joe biden spoke earlier to his supporters at an event in the sun just california and he told them about the success of his campaign and what is plan was for the future. Fund the climate camp mary kay. And im going army national. Trial were going to go over well it made them very. Well we have teams deployed right across to key battleground states for super tuesday alan fischer is at a democratic watch morning in austin texas 1st we go to ron reynolds whos any
Bernie Sanders
party in the state of california the state with the biggest prize of course which
Bernie Sanders
is projected to win as we heard from rachelle but we still dont know by how much. Thats right there were to all the returns are not yet in but when the projection came across from the various
American News
networks that
Bernie Sanders
had won here in california think scott loud in a hurry people are very happy and some people told me they are exhausted from having been working very hard volunteer in phone banking knocking on doors and doing a variety of other things to see and make sure that their choice senator
Bernie Sanders
made it to the top here in california which as you mentioned is the jewel in the crown of super tuesday now one of those people who work for senator sanders joins me now
Paul Newman Paul
thank you very much for being with us tonight hi how you feel and im feeling exulted i am so excited i mean i put a lot of work into canvassing phone banking i bought pins and all kinds of stickers and it paid off you know it paid up ive done this so many years before with other political candidates and its so frustrating that all these people put all this work into it without reward and for the 1st time i get to see bernie actually win california and its wonderful now we were talking earlier about senator about the former
Vice President
joe biden and that he had won a number of states so he had a pretty good good night outside of california and we still dont know about texas but. Where do we go from here where do you go from here where does the
Sanders Campaign
go from here well a lot of people will be going to others states to help campus for bernie. They have weve organized different groups to get buses to drive them or some people are flying on their own on their own dime. Other people are phone banking for other states and were getting help here from that weve got help here from the bad as far as i know. Ive been working with the americans for democratic action founded by
Eleanor Roosevelt
which is an organization that organizes people for such things all ive been asking other sandor supporters tonight and i know its really loud in here so bear with us to bear with us. If
Bernie Sanders
is not the democratic nominee. After the convention in july will you and the other people who work for him support the democratic nominee well i will because i believe in the matter who vote lou i think we have to get trump out i think this man is insane in the white house i mean we have we have an epidemic right now in the way hes handling it is poorly and it justifies medicare for all is well you know i mean you want to senator sanders crime platform exactly i mean in an epidemic situation a poor man goes to a hospital and they ask him for insurance if he has 19 and they refuse him he can spread it you know i mean theres common sense of this paul thank you very much appreciate your joining us ok thank you so thats one voice in the crowd here at the
Bernie Sanders
wrap up party a lot of people very happy still returns trickling in we still dont know about texas so the nights not over yet and do the night is not over and speaking from his home state of vermont
Bernie Sanders
the democratic hopeful addressed his supporters and told them that the same old politics wouldnt be trouble. What we need is a new politics that breeds working class people in time our political move good the works brings young people into our political goal in the and which in those very bold will create our highest voter turnout in american political history the less ill speak to allan fish in austin texas forest sexists the 2nd biggest prize in this fight to save primary contest super tuesday contest any any idea whos in the need in texas or is it still too close to call. No we do. Theres about 60 percent of the votes have been counted and joe biden for the 1st time this evening is now in the lead only by about 5000. 00 votes but that translates essentially into both joe biden and
Bernie Sanders
at the moment walking away with about 20 delegates each theres a lot more than those up for grabs so that numbers going to increase but people are suggesting those
Rural Counties
know start to deliver their votes joe bidens lead might well increase but that something that will have to keep an eye on joining me live now here is time to pull with progress texas time how would you analyze the results this evening particularly here in texas where romney sander seem to be in the lead for so long you know joe biden really is the comeback kid people are still casting their ballots across insane so people have waited in line for a very long time tonight to be able to cast their ballot i do think its too close to call at this moment but i think what we are seeing across texas is to see as im for people to make their voices heard to get out and vote and im excited to see people still doing that and i think this race is too close to call quite yet is the infrastructure in america broken i mean for the richest nation in the world when people want to go and vote its a bit rubbish just not it isnt texas itself has a history a longstanding history of
Voter Suppression
interstate thankfully on the ground we have advocates working around the clock to make sure that we protect our right to vote and preserve this rate for any eligible american and any eligible texan here in texas really when it comes to folks being able to protect their
Voting Rights
we need democratic leadership at the state level and the
National Level
to protect the right to vote in to ensure that texans across the state are able to cast their ballots in an easy manner insists the washed possible result for the
Democratic Party
when you have 2 wings fighting against one another the progressive wing of
Bernie Sanders
and. In the more to stop list when youre a jew boy i dont think this is the worst result at all the
Democratic Party
is a
Beautiful Party
that encompasses a wide variety of values and deeply held beliefs and i think what we can agree on is that texans a majority of texans agree to making sure that we all have
Affordable Health
care a majority of texans want us to take action when it comes to our
Climate Crisis
and a majority of texans want to protect the rights of both and while we may disagree on how to approach those issues i do think that our party will come together in november and make sure that we vote trump out of office you dont think the one side will stay home in the way that they dated 2016 which led to difficulties fairly good in the most thing thats what most of the election but it certainly caused the problems i dont think we can afford to and so this is really a call for folks from across the democratic spectrum to make sure that one theyve made their voices heard in this primary if theyre not in texas right now that theyre able to vote in the future that they vote then but also that the
Democratic Party
in texas here we have so much at stake in so many decades of work fighting for a more progressive taxes and fighting for a stronger saints and we are coming to a culmination in november with our state house seats on the ballot with our senate seat on the ballot and with this president ial ticket quick question to finish what do you do tomorrow if you know everyone gets excited about the primary what do you do from tomorrow i will be looking for results as we wont have too many results tonight but ill be watching the results and trying to make sure that really we talk to voters and reassure voters that no matter what the results are we are texas progressives and were here for the spying on us and so much for joining us appreciate you taking the time to get it. From. One of the. Groups that are very much involved in politics in texas who is just to recap by 60 percent of the votes counted joe biden no no lead by. Theres about 5 behind were expecting this to go on for a few so biden in the lead in a very tight texas race sank you very much for that alan fischer in austin we will be checking in with you later of course once we have a clearer picture of whats happening there in texas
President Trump
as you can imagine has been keeping a close eye on these democratic primary results and tweeting about them he tweeted this in reaction to my room burkes performance saying the biggest loser tonight by far is many
Mike Bloomberg
his
Political Consultants
took him for a ride 700000000. 00 washed down the drain and he got nothing for it but the nickname mini mike and the complete destruction of his reputation way to go mike he also tweeted about
Elizabeth Warren
s performance in these primaries a bit of a sworn whos lost her. Home state of massachusetts says
Elizabeth Pocahontas
warren other than many mike was a loser of the night she didnt even come close to winning her home state of massachusetts while now she can just sit back with her husband and have a nice cold beer so the common stare of the u. S. President lets bring back our panel now from the
United States
a special panel to analyze and react to these super tuesday results we have with us

thank you all for being with us this evening once again. Jennifer. Super tuesday turning out to be perhaps a springboard that joe biden had hoped for do you think you can sustain this all the way to the convention. Well i suppose that remains to be seen typically what happens is once it becomes clear that there is a
Single Person
that the party is sort of coalescing around that creates the momentum thats necessary its important to keep in mind here that this is not a winner take all system when were looking at state by state it doesnt really matter that much who wins which state. In each state the delegates are being allocated proportionally and so to that extent although we are seeing the surge that joe biden has now
Bernie Sanders
is still very much in this thing its not its not over yet it may very well turn into more or less a 2 person race at this point i wouldnt be surprised if we see
Mike Bloomberg
drop out after the dust settles from super tuesday i dont know that warren will drop out but shes not going to be truly competitive and so whether or not the party stays fractured and it seems likely that it will it will be a battle to see which of the different factions within the party can really sustain itself and call itself the majority interesting that you mention the party being fractured. It seems that the consolidation by the democrats around joe biden the democratic establishment around him have certainly very helped him why why is this democratic establishment you know you know them very well why they so wary of running with sanders as the democratic standard bearer i mean for our
International Audience
who is not you know understanding whats going on here why the democrats so wary about. Well i think what the
Democratic Party
wants to accomplish is not only winning the office of the president but its also about maintaining the majorities in the house of representatives which keeps
Speaker Pelosi
in that leadership position and also trying to close the gap in terms of 2 the differential between the
Republican Senate
republican led senate and the democrats in the senate as well and so there is a theory that there are so. That a majority of voters just wont be able to coalesce around senator sanders is sort of. Self promotion or self definition as a democratic socialist that his policies may be too far to the left that he wont be able to put together the coalition that will actually help so when down ballot there are a number of districts in the house of representatives for example for
International Gas
that were won in 2018 that are really. From cycle to cycle go could go republican could go to mccracken because of the momentum of 2008 there were a number of seats that were moved to the democratic side where nancy pelosi was made speaker in a sense in the house of representatives again and theres real fear i think that that the policies in positioning the platform in sort of the rhetoric of senator sanders might endanger those positions in those d. Seats that have been won in 2018 and really puts into jeopardy the overall democratic majority or governing majority that would be required to move any real agenda forward no matter who was elected president and so theres a concern there about that for senator sanders and and i think we really have to do think about have to think about how do we actually govern. Not just talk about our platform right adolfo talks there this real fear that democrats have of
Bernie Sanders
any 2016 it was almost similar with donald trump i mean americans were lectured about voting for donald trump and yet they still did do you think this push by the democrats to sideline
Bernie Sanders
will backfire as was the case in 2016 with top. Well i think theyre going to be careful its not for me to give advice to the

Bernie Sanders will backfire as was the case in 2016 with top. Well i think theyre going to be careful its not for me to give advice to the
Democratic Party but it is fractured it is he is far i agree with the other guest he has far far to the left there is more than a theory polling data shows that the house of representatives would likely flip to the republican control if he were the nominee and certainly the even the
Senate Republican majority could be expanded so theyre well founded fear is based on data thats out there thats what the fear is is the motivation the question though is how deep the fracture is and no party whether republican or democrat wants to be in a situation where you have a contested convention you know im old enough that i was young and involved in the 1st
Reagan Campaign in 1976 and that was fractured and we lost to jimmy carter in 1980 jimmy carter lost the presidency after a very very tough and again fractured. Campaign and convention with ted kennedy same thing for george bush sr you go on and on about these examples so the fracture is the big is the big problem the commitment that the sanders people have are so particular to him but i think unless this is handled the extremely diplomatically thats where the nominee of the nominee is is joe biden which is what the establishment wants then they need to be very gingerly about how they handle sanders is obviously his is his last campaign he has he has a movement within the
Democratic Party hes not just a regular democrat doesnt even consider himself a democrats he has a movement thats how that movement is is treated that ultimately will decide what happens in november in terms of their degree of participation and so jennifer how do you think the democrats can handle then he sanders and his supporters. Well one of the challenges here is you know we were talking earlier about
Mike Bloomberg and noting that one of his problems is you know i think. Adolfo had mentioned that bloomberg isnt really a democrat not too long ago he was a registered republican and in some ways the
Bernie Sanders has a similar problem you know hes mostly hes won most of his elections as an independent and he actively and somewhat aggressively makes a lot of a fair amount of rhetoric against the democratic establishment and so its in some ways its unusual for candidates like bloomberg and sanders to be seeking the nomination of a party with which they dont really identify and that presents a particularly sticky challenge for
Coalition Building and
Party Building which is what a nomination process is supposed to be all about sanders has as weve been mentioning here a very loyal following very energetic following and one that will lay some groundwork and put boots to the ground and you know theres theres quite a lot of energy there and thats not trivial thats a really important part of campaigning whether or not that is sustainable and whether or not its growing i think is the key thing i think the
Bernie Sanders primary argument of his electability essentially is not so much that hes going to win over the moderate lane its that hes going to bring in new voters primarily
Younger Voters and and get that 18 to 25 year old set that usually doesnt vote with much frequency and then all those voters are going to actually turn out and vote for him on election day and expand the democratic electorate in ways we havent seen before so its going to be really interesting to look at the returns from a state like california to say if that has actually panned out you know it looks like sanders is going to win california but how many delegates he gets and who those where those votes are coming from is going to matter if it will matter indeed hes winning california and joe biden is in the lead in. In texas. Lets talk a bit more about this fracture it within the
Democratic Party and i want to get your thoughts on this will joe biden be able to unite this party if he ends up being the nominee of course was still far from that and do you see him being a different candidate
Going Forward than the one he has been so far well i think
Vice President biden has definitely the depth of relationship as is been sort of talked about before with sort of older voters who have tended to be his base up to this point the
Africanamerican Community i think there is. A he has a tested record in other areas in sort of demographics that would suggest on paper that you could that he could be a uniting our of the party look at what happened just the other day in texas where the club which are in a are people came down to dallas and with. Former representative better will work and so there is a demonstration of being able to put the
Party Together now. As a number of the other guests ive already spoke to i think the sanders base is very loyal as we saw in the 26 to the election where they were decided to stay home or vote in the independent vote for some of the independent candidates i think even despite senator sanders actually move into an endorsement. Of of
Hillary Clinton and so i think that it is going to be a real testament both of either of these candidates i think the sort of going rate story is that the biden team is probably best situated to do that but i i do believe that there is a desire for senator sanders to be able to put grow grow beyond what he refers to as the d stablished. And bring in other voters and i just dont think up to this point weve seen weve seen demonstration of that quite yet and interesting to see what happens over the next few months thank you all once again for being with us on this especially having
Jennifer Victor. And of course. Adolfo franco in washington d. C. Will be speaking to you later throughout the morning here on aljazeera here watching our special coverage of the u. S. Super tuesday primaries lets check in once again with
Richelle Carey for the results for sure all right follies and this is work things stand right now ice
President Joe Biden is having a very strong night projected to win the home state senator
Elizabeth Warren course that of massachusetts more on how shes doing in a moment earlier he also secured minnesota that is the home state of senator a. B. Clover sure he just dropped out of the race about 2 days ago and endorsed joe biden and these are the other states that he has he has won oklahoma arkansas tennessee
North Carolina alabama virginia and as i said massachusetts and minnesota so he has won the. States which means he will get the most delegates he does not get all of the delegates they will be split among all the candidates but if a candidate gets below 15 percent they get no delegates at all
Bernie Sanders is projected to win the big prize that is california the largest number of delegates well over 400 but again it comes down to proportionality joe biden could still do very well in california without actually winning california senator but sanders also won his home state of vermont colorado and utah texas though he can tell you is still too close to call
Vice President joe biden pulled ahead chest slightly but its really going back and forth between the 228 delegates up for grabs and also the lines have been incredibly long in texas there are people that have been standing in line for 4 hours to vote so that race is certainly not going to be called for quite some time lets go to maine now
Bernie Sanders said joe biden are in a dead heat in maine but maine is actually
Bernie Sanders neck of the woods as pretty close to his home state of vermont so he may end up pulling ahead with their 70 percent of the precincts that are reporting and they are tied at about 33 percent each so lets take a look at the big picture right by
President Joe Biden 376. 00 delegates
Bernie Sanders to 95. 00
Mike Bloomberg 32. 00 he spent about half a 1000000000. 00 on advertising for those 32. 00 so im sure hes going to be doing some soul searching tonight as will probably senator
Elizabeth Warren from the state of massachusetts she lost her state but she does have 24 delegates so far so again texas big one of the big prizes still has not been called california has been called for
Bernie Sanders but the delegates have not been proportion allocated just yet away so that very much for keeping us up to date with all those numbers and shedding light on the big picture as well
