In the u. S. State. Trials for one of the worlds leading Coronavirus Vaccine contenders have been put on hold astra zeneca says a patient has a potentially unexplained illness which will need further investigation the pharmaceutical giant is working with Oxford University to help develop the vaccine which had begun late stage testing last week thousands are taking part in the trial in the u. K. U. S. Brazil and south africa last month astra zeneca agreed to supply the e. U. Up to 400000000 doses if the vaccine is proved safe and effective taking its global target to 3000000000. 00 well lets speak to julie fisher she is an associate Research Professor of microbiology and immunology at Georgetown Medical university she joins us now from washington d. C. Julie i know this sounds ominous to a lot of people but this is the reason you do stage 3 trials right but what does this mean for the development of this vaccine. So this is exactly as you said the reason that there are phase 3 Clinical Trials it is to test both whether the vaccine works and is effective and whether the vaccine is safe at this point a group of external experts will be consulted and its a normal part of the process theyll be called in to see if any adverse events that were reported and were serious are likely to be due to the vaccine or to be unrelated and their advice will help decide whether or not the vaccine trial continues judy i see this is the 2nd time now that this specific vaccine trial has been put on hold what would it take to cause a pause like this. It would take a serious adverse event so we are all familiar with my old 1st events that can happen after vaccination like fever or pain at the site of the injection to put a pause that has to do the event would be serious something that was perhaps related to the heart the lungs the kidneys another system in the body. That was really required medical attention and that was found to be serious enough to merit causing this very important effort to test the spec seen in order to make sure that the vaccine is safe and that the adverse events were not due to the vaccine but what then does this mean for the other thousands of participants in this trial i imagine theyre feeling quite nervous now. Well certainly they they will have been given instructions to monitor their own health very carefully and they will be saying clinicians on a follow up basis after day have been vaccinated as volunteers to check for any side effects or adverse events and to report if they themselves have experienced any symptoms that could be a sign of a reaction to the vaccine julie are there concerns that moments like this in Vaccine Development in such a politicized climate as were living in now my mate people scared to take a vaccine even once one is deemed safe and released publicly its absolutely a concern and thats why it its ironic that the steps that are taken to ensure the safety of the vaccine also can raise questions of peoples minds about whether or not the vaccine is safe and safe for them this is why Vaccine Companies in the past couple of days have taken the unprecedented step of making clear their own commitment to this external safety review process and to not taking a back seat forward for approval by the f. D. A. In the u. S. Other regulatory agencies in told they are able to show that they have taken all Due Diligence to make sure the vaccines are safe julie weve also seen other vaccines being rolled out very speedily in russia and china despite concerns that they havent been through as rigorous or lengthy testing do you share those concerns. I do i think that its important to understand that there are there is a set of expectations to test the safety of any vaccine that will be given to 2 people and that that is that it would be tested in a small group of volunteers to make sure that it is safe and has a reasonable chance of being effective before even going into larger groups of volunteers much less the public without that kind of testing we just dont know for sure if the vaccine will protect people from an action. Judy let me ask you the golden question that everyones wondering then given where we are now with all the various trials and the spores how soon do you see a vaccine being rolled out i think we would like to see one as quickly as possible all of us but i think its reasonable to assume that it would be at the very earliest the end of 2020 and more likely 2021 that said none of us have a crystal ball to to determine that and were all waiting eagerly to see the results of these trials and to see if there is compelling data that shows that these most promising vaccine candidates are safe and effective soon jellyfish are there an associate Research Professor of microbiology and in immunology at georgetown thanks so much great to have you back on aljazeera today thanks for being with us thank you so much for having me well as julie was just saying the astra zeneca is one of 9 Drug Companies that have pledged not to rush approval for vaccines unless there prove to be safe during Clinical Trials the joint statement from the companys c. E. O. This comes as u. S. President donald trump continues to suggest that a vaccine could come out as early as november that would be right before election day our White House Correspondent kelly halkett explains how the development of a vaccine is being even more politicized. This is unprecedented according to some drug Industry Experts what i can tell you is that the u. S. President has certainly been touting that the vaccine may be released by the end of the year then as recently as yesterday on the steps behind me at a press conference he said even by the end of october of course the timing rather interesting given that election day is november 3rd and that seemed to cause some alarm among the c. E. O. s of these major Drug Companies because quite unexpectedly and again without precedent they released this letter stating that they are only going to release a vaccine when it is safe to do so and they wont sort of rush for any arbitrary timeline put forward by a politician now in the case of donald trump he certainly is pushing to get this is quickly as possible looking for a success given the fact that he is lagging in the polls but he is not the only one politicizing it in fact his rival joe biden is hammering hard on Donald Trumps sort of claims that hes handled the coronavirus very well in fact the focus of a new ad being put out by the Biden Campaign is that hes framing the contrast between himself and donald trump darkness versus a fresh start as he calls it. Well now the imposition of more coronavirus restrictions has triggered a wave of anger at greeces largest refugee camp location on the Eastern Island of lesbos several fires were deliberately lit in the early hours on wednesday sending families fleeing from their tents the facility was placed under quarantine last week after the festa case of corona virus was found their cases have since risen to 35. 00 the overcrowded facility holds more than 12000. 00 people thats 4 times its capacity and has frequently been criticized by aid groups for poor Living Conditions rally i spoke to Douglas Hermann hes the cofounder of refocus media labs an organization that works with citizen journalists inside moria camp he explains whats unfolding inside. Current moment there are several fires that are kind of all over the camp. Yes corona has been identified in this camp in recent days and the number of confirmed cases have been rising many of the asymptomatic people have been put into a quarantine area on the far eastern side of the camp and that area earlier this evening was attacked by individuals who seemingly do not believe that corona is actually in the camp and that it is being seen as a reason to continue a 6 month lockdown in the camp some attacks on some vehicles to move people out of the camp or to move them around ensued and some of the people that were in this current team area were fleeing from that violence and in the process of that several fires were set on the perimeter and then now those fires have been set inside the camp also office for the asylum seeking process takes place is on fire our students living quarters are on fire. Numerous people have been evacuated from the area of their own accord or are now by authorities the space that was created for quarantine was for anyone who had recently tested or had been potentially connected to anyone who had tested positive of those cases where its symptomatic and they were just basically quarantine them off to the side for 14 days so once you know once night falls its kind of not necessarily you know aggressively policed and in this area some individuals gathered and started arresting some of the people that were inside and some sort of violence ensued the images and the photos and the stories that are coming back from our students are that you know this violence has just kind of turned into kind of a full scale riot. Well now the police chief and other Senior Officers in new york states rock just a sissy have announced their retirements as criticism grows over the departments handling of daniel prince arrest protests erupted after details amounts to about 3 subsequent death back in march a black mans family released previously unseen video which showed police pursing a hood over his head as he knelt naked and restrained on the street during an apparent Mental Health and said and he died a week later after he was taken off life support john hendren has an update. The police chief of rochester new york has resigned following an incident in which another black man has died at the hands of police it began in late march thats when police say they found daniel prude naked and ranting in the streets of rochester at some point the officer said he said something about corona virus and was spitting so they put a bag over his head and he died shortly thereafter the police chief around singletary told the mayor that someone had died in Police Custody of a Drug Overdose and thats where things stood until last week thats when the family of mr pruett got a hold of body camera footage from police through a Public Information request that video showed an officer kneeling on mr prudes back with a bag over mr prudes head the coroner did an investigation and determine the cause of death was homicide by its fixation prosecutors are now looking into the case and on tuesday the police chief resigned along with most of his command staff saying his honesty and integrity were being called into question these officers are simply the latest to come under the microscope since george floyd was killed at the hands of Police Officers in minneapolis now the block of 10 Southeast Asian nations known as a san is holding about summit starting off with an Opening Ceremony and yet none looking for grays in. In the region of the u. S. And china who will also take on those talks and ascot hider explains from bangkok the u. S. Will most likely use the platform to continue to push back against china. The any meetings are viewed as an opportunity for the host country this year vietnam to showcase its culture progress and position but not only have 2020 meetings and summits switched to virtual gatherings their traditions and the usual focus on the big regional issues this year are taking a backseat because of covert 19 but even more than the pandemic itself its the dire economic downturn the region is preparing for i think that this is foremost in the minds of Foreign Ministers and i think theyll be looking for creative and practical ways of trying to. Quickly recover in 2021 they may also be talking about opportunities for allowing tourism or travel bubbles or other things like this have been discussed primarily bilaterally between governments in the past while the 10 countries of austria look to Work Together to help restart their economies superpowers china and the United States continue to ratchet up their rhetoric and posture in the region tension between china and the u. S. In the South China Sea has surged both in moving military assets into the areas of disputed territory but also diplomatic action sanctions and threats with the need for both nations to be involved in the region for economic and security reasons they look to avoid flashpoints countries in this region they look at hong kong right and they see a very sort of concerning trend where if you play into one of the you know superpower arguments if you become sort of an object of super power competition it tends to go very badly for you and i think countries in the region are are watching that example very carefully so while the Foreign Ministers look to make progress and working better as a region along. Powerful outsiders will be focused on plotting a path for their collective 650000000 people who face years of post pandemic economic recovery its got hotter out 0 bank are. Still ahead here on aljazeera. Not quite so black and white why fair housing activists in the us say President Trump is clinging to an outdated vision of america sometimes. Hello the typhoon has really done its worst however it is not just going to sit through this northeastern section of china all this time because the that is the remnants of that typhoon and it will continue to produce some very heavy amounts of rain and this on top of a typhoon may cite which produced flooding across this entire region such a wednesday the downpours will continue but also exciting for the south across the Korean Peninsula and again some or all the heavy rain across much of the central japan in the rains a quite extensive again across the central southern half the china in fact extending right the way across into the northeast of india now by thursday well see this front continue to clear across much of japan so again some heavy downpours at times but it does begins to improve across the Korean Peninsula but those shows still very widespread across the northeast of china and really its only the eastern side of China Shanghai for example the conditions are fine and dry say those rains extending all the way across tools india and in fact theres some very heavy rain to need to work its way towards the coast coming out of the southern sections of the bangle so whole the way along the west coast to the west and gaston down into account in fact that also warnings in place the heavy rains and carola they will continue as we head on into those and again the rains fairly heavy through edition and in particular into west bengal.
