One of the world's largest e-commerce businesses plans to expand its reach later this year in western Wayne County. Amazon announced this week it plans to open five new facilities in metro Detroit in 2021, including a sorting center in Plymouth Township. Township Supervisor Kurt Heise said the company is renovating the former Spartan warehouse that served as a distribution center for the grocery chain until it closed more than 10 years ago. That center is located on Haggerty Road and south of Ann Arbor Road, across from the planned Henry Ford Health development on the site of the former Kmart. "The facility was built in the early 1970s," he said. "It was dormant for a long time, and really since the Spartan days it hasn't been fully utilized."
