Somewhat predictably, the mere mention of carpet in old boozers (C8) caused some of the older heads among Column 8 readers to explode – metaphorically, of course. John Bills of North Avoca emphatically states “the really
real boozers had tile floors (to match the tile walls). No fancy carpet to be found”. Robert Hosking of Paddington exclaims,“Carpet? What kind of modern nonsense is that? You have to be able to hose the bar out at 6.15pm!”
Lance Rainey of Lanitza also scoffs at the idea of carpet in proper old boozers (C8) and holds an unflattering view of carpeted lounge bars and those who frequent them. According to Lance, old boozers had “no tables either; just the bar and elbow-high shelves around columns, in corners and along walls. And, of course, on summer nights there was concrete pavement for those who stood outside the windows, drinks being passed to them through the windows by their mates inside.”
