KAAL-TV Created: June 13, 2021 09:26 PM (ABC 6 News) -- This weekend another group is honoring Waseca Police Officer Arik Matson. The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association held its annual convention in Alexandria. The group announced its awardees for Officer of the Year for both 2020 and 2021. Last year's convention canceled because of the pandemic. The group says nominations for Officer of the year are based on “heroics, outstanding service, or distinguished community involvement in service.” They also say the "award is considered a very high honor." Matson was chosen to receive the prestigious award for his actions on Jan. 6, 2020 while responding to a report of a suspicious person. He was shot and nearly killed in the line of duty. Matson will receive the 2020 MPPOA Officer of the Year.
