Ruffolo was to appear on the ballot as an incumbent after the school board in January appointed him to fill the vacant seat left by Leah Olson through the end of her term in April. Days later, though, he withdrew his application for the opening after coming under fire for "following" several Facebook pages featuring scantily clad models. It was too late to withdraw his name from the April ballot, but Ruffolo told The Post-Crescent he wouldn't actively campaign.
