At about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Lt. E. Carroll with the Halifax County Sheriffâs Office attempted to stop a 1998 Oldsmobile on Interstate 95 near the 172 mile post for reckless driving, speeding, seat belt violation and failure to operate headlamps in the rain. The vehicle failed to stop and Carroll gave chase in and around the city of Roanoke Rapids and then back onto I-95, according to a press release from Chief Deputy Scott Hall. The driver, Nathan Lassiter Keith, 21, of Raleigh, fled into Virginia and later crashed into the guardrail in an attempt to cross the interstate. Keith jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot and was later apprehended a short distance from the crash site by Carroll and Deputy M. Bishop. Keith was turned over to the Virginia State Police for impaired driving.
