Assemblymember Michelle Bonnet Hale. Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ said 4,800 applications have been received for $5 million in federal CARES funds set aside to help Juneau residents with housing and individual assistance needs. The demand is too much for the funds and the assembly may look elsewhere for unspent CARES funding to help close the gap. The assembly voted 5-4 to not allow residents to get help from both programs at a special meeting Thursday. CBJ Manager Rorie Watt said the change was necessary to spread out the limited CARES Act funds remaining. Finance Director Jeff Rogers said people who've applied for individual assistance are in the lowest income category and have children. He expected the $2 million set aside for individual assistance could fund about 1,000 of the applications. The top awards are $2,000 with $300 for each dependent child. At that rate 800 of those that applied would not receive any funds.
