RNZ The Japanese Coast Guard has called off its full-time search for Gulf Livestock 1, the live export ship that went missing in a typhoon in the East China Sea. North Shore ward councillor Richard Hills said he called the council’s executive team on Wednesday night to demand an end to the practice. “We have double confirmed with Auckland Council’s chief officer that it won't be happening again,” Hills said. “Slaughter is part of a farming practice, but it’s done humanely. Export, even for breeding, is not good for cattle.” Auckland Council is the biggest urban farmer in the Auckland region, with 1000 cattle and 5500 ewes stretching across 1500 hectares of pasture.
