Advocacy groups in court bid to end rodeo in New Zealand

Two New Zealand animal advocacy groups have filed proceedings against the Government and the country’s National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee over the sport of rodeo.
Proceedings were filed on Monday by the New Zealand Animal Law Association (NZALA) and Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE), asserting that rodeo events are in violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
SAFE is eyeing a “complete, legal ban” of the sport. The group’s chief executive, Debra Ashton, said: “We’ve had enough. We’ve tried everything, and now, we’ll see the Government in court”

The Government has confirmed plans to ban live animal exports from 2023 – a move that has already drawn criticism from some in the industry.

ANALYSIS:
The Labour Government received plaudits this week for its historic announcement it will ban the live export of animals by sea. It s said to be a world first.
The decision comes after years of pressure, which increased after last year s tragedy when the ship Gulf Livestock 1 left New Zealand and sunk in a storm, killing nearly 6000 cows and 41 sea crew. An animal rights group is calling for the pet thieves who took a pregnant Taranaki dog and returned her without her valuable days-old puppies to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Pippa, a three-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was expecting four cavoodle puppies, which can sell for thousands of dollars, when she was stolen from an Omata family home on Easter Monday. ....

Auckland Council says live exporting cattle was a 'one-off', won't happen again

The Japanese Coast Guard has called off its full-time search for Gulf Livestock 1, the live export ship that went missing in a typhoon in the East China Sea.
North Shore ward councillor Richard Hills said he called the council’s executive team on Wednesday night to demand an end to the practice.
“We have double confirmed with Auckland Council’s chief officer that it won t be happening again,” Hills said.
“Slaughter is part of a farming practice, but it’s done humanely. Export, even for breeding, is not good for cattle.”
Auckland Council is the biggest urban farmer in the Auckland region, with 1000 cattle and 5500 ewes stretching across 1500 hectares of pasture. ....
