Autopsy: Markquett Martin died of self-inflicted gunshot running from police

An autopsy, conducted Feb. 11 by Davidson County Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Thomas Deering, shows Markquett Martin's cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the right side of his head. Deering wrote in his report Martin was struck once while carrying a handgun with a "very large magazine" while fleeing Metro Nashville Police Department officers.
He was 21.
The shooting took place 1:50 p.m. Feb. 10 in the 800 block of Claiborne Street in J.C. Napier Homes just outside downtown.
"Based on all the information given, it is my opinion that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and not a homicide," Deering wrote in his 13-page report. "The autopsy findings also do not clarify between accident and suicide."
