After navigating an uncertain year, there is hope for a return to normalcy this fall, but it won’t come cheaply.  Overall spending on back-to-school products is expected to be up 16 percent over last year to $32.5 billion, according to a study by Deloitte. Families are expected to spend nearly $700 on average per child on back-to-school supplies across the country. In New York, that number is closer to $1,200.
Fueling the surge in sales is a continued reliance on technology. Dependence on tech devices and digital services skyrocketed during the pandemic and that acceleration likely forever altered the way educators will teach students both virtually and in the classroom. Laptops are no longer a luxury; they are often a necessity. Nearly half (44 percent) of those polled in the Deloitte study said they plan to purchase fewer traditional supplies in favor of gadgets and other digital technologies.
