University leaders are not being behind the scenes at Party Conferences, freezing fees means rising costs will eat away at their budgets. And they want more changes, too. Its a good start. I would like the government to go further. I would suggest that they consider introducing targeted maintenance grants for those students who most need it, to give students cash in their pockets while they are at university. Getting a degree leads to better paid jobs. But for middle earners, that still means 30 years of paying back a loan. One reason why raising the threshold will make a difference. That means, for a middle earning graduate, they will see less of their monthly pay taken in graduate contributions. Its a very expensive option for the government, though.
