Oui they gave us a leaflet to say that our flights from monarch they gave us a leaflet to say that ourflights from monarch had been cancelled. We were panicking them. What do we do . Everybody is after flights everywhere. It has cost me another £666 to get where i want to go today when i had already paid 1500. Catalan leaders said the region had won the right to go independent after 90 of people who thatis independent after 90 of people who that is abated in the referendum backed independence. Good morning. It is monday the 2nd of october. You are watching bbc news. We will begin with the developing story, the shooting in las vegas. We have heard from police in las vegas at least 20 people have died and more than 100 people have been wounded after a gunman opened fire on people who were attending a Country Music festival. Police say the suspect, a local man who they havent named, opened fire on the outdoor event from the 32nd floor of the mandalay casino hotel on the citys sunset strip. They later shot him dead. We can listen to the las vegas sheriff speaking about the attack. Officers responded to the location and engaged the suspect at that location. He is dead. He has been identified as a local resident. I will not release his name at this time. We are interested in a companion that is travelling with him and her name is, i will provide you with the names, please be accurate on this, it is Marilou Danley. She is an asian female, approximately 411 tall. A weight of 111 pounds. We have not located at this time and we are interested in talking to her for follow up. Sheriffjoe lombard oh of the Las Vegas Police department. Regan morris is in los angeles. The police so morris is in los angeles. The police so far have not named to the gunman is, or who he was. They said he was a local man. At the added any more information . They have not. They identified him as a local. They identified him as a local. They identified him as a local. They identified him as a man. And as you said, they are looking for his female companion. They have not made it clear why they want to speak to her but it is believed she might be his roommate. There is speculation about that in the us media. Whether 01 about that in the us media. Whether or not they are a couple orjust live together, they are looking for her to find out more information about the shooter. They did not speculate on the motive or if they knew of a motive. Presumably that is why they want to speak to her. Why would somebody do a thing like this . Any update at this stage on the vitalis tees and the number of people wounded . Vitalis tees and the number of people wounded . They are still saying up to 20. It is 100 wounded. Extraordinary numbers. The way that they said. Sorry, they said at least 20. It gives you pause and makes you think that number really could increase. There are so many wounded people. One eyewitness said her husband was lying on top of her to protect her and stop her from being shot. She was crying and said we we re being shot. She was crying and said we were like sitting ducks. He was firing down from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino. People initially thought they were fireworks. This woman i was talking about thought they were fireworks. It happens during a Country Music concert. They do not know whether gunfire is coming from either. It must have been terrifying. The scenes we have been showing clips of, people running, crouching, trying to get shelter, or simply fleeing in panic away from where they were. Clearly you can see these scenes of absolute terror. And we are hearing, although i do not believe the type of weapon used has been confirmed, reports of an automatic weapon being fired. And with an event like this inevitably even though it is very early days, the hours afterwards, people are talking about the gun laws again, arent they . People always talk about the gun laws after a mass shooting in the United States. Nevada has very permissive gun laws. There is not a limit on how much ammunition you can carry. I am not an expert on firearms and judging it but that was sustained and prolonged automatic fire. That is not necessarily illegal. It is illegal to shoot people but not illegal to have that kind of weapon necessarily in nevada. It always provokes a debate after a shooting like this. But quite often, theyre more gun sales after a mass shooting because people fear they will be a crackdown on gun control. With a republican controlled government in washington, that is unlikely. But we will see. There is a way is a debate. Finally and briefly, do we know if people are still in lockdown in parts of las vegas . 0r know if people are still in lockdown in parts of las vegas . Or are people that were taking shelter in various places on the sunset strip, have they been able to come out now . |j think they been able to come out now . think most of them are out. I do not know about all of them. I know the floor where the gunman was, i do not know what happened to the other people staying on the floor, i believe it was clear that completely but i do not know where they went. Some people were allowed back. They have the highways into las vegas closed and the main roads closed. They have been reopened. The area around mandalay bay is still closed but traffic conditions have opened up. It is after three oclock in the morning. Hopefully people are in their beds and try to get some sleep if they have been through this horrific series of events tonight. Reagan, thank you very much. Regan morris on the shooting in las vegas. Eyewitnesses have been describing the chaos and confusion in the attack. We are going to play a clip for you now. It is pretty graphic, really. You can hear prolonged gunfire, which was going on. Gunshots. Gunshots. Get gunshots. Get down gunshots. Get down gets down sheer panic during and in the immediate aftermath of that prolonged gunfire. It sounds like an automatic weapon. Multiple us networks are now reporting the gunman shot dead was 64 year old steven haddock. Multiple News Networks are reporting the gunman was 64 year old stephen haddock. Police in las vegas have already been saying he is a local man. They are looking for his travelling companion, somebody they described as his travelling companion, Marilou Danley. That prolonged gunfire you have just heard in that clip was fired from the 32nd floor of a hotel on the sunset strip, directly onto the people who were at that music concert. As we have been saying, eyewitnesses have been describing the chaos and confusion during the attack. We can listen to a little bit more of that. We saw first officers, about eight, running into the lift bay, 301a, they are going up, coming down, going this way, that way. We were told to get out, told to in. One shooter is up and we we re told to in. One shooter is up and we were told by Police Shooting at an one is roaming around and we have been told to come here. We think we are safe here because there is so much police. Do you see any shooters . Did you hear anything . Yes. But the initial gunshots were like machine gun fire. Logan cruz and Liberty Psesser were at the concert. We are all on the ground. We cannot see anything. It is dark. All we hear is gunshots going off. So it keeps going and it starts and somebody says he is reloading, run and you see people. There are people laying on the ground. Looking on the ground, people are bloodied everywhere. I saw a girl and her whole face and chest was bloodied. People were pushing over grills, burning their hands on grills trying to get through because the rock barbecues everywhere. There are kids everywhere. It was crazy. And then we make it out and we run to the Tropicana Hotel. It is right next door. We get inside and we tried to figure out where to get out and where to go. And we heard somebody yell, the shooter is in here everybody starts running out of there. Nathanjudah is a british journalist on holiday with his family, staying opposite the Mandalay Hotel, who witnessed victims fleeing the shooting. We arejust going we are just going out of the exit doors and maybe ten or 15 people ran straight past us. We did not think too much about it. Seconds later it was hundreds just running too much about it. Seconds later it was hundredsjust running in and we did not fully understand exactly what was going on at that time. But obviously we turned around and went straight back into the casino. Hundreds of people were running, crying, screaming, dropping back, dropping everything they could. Much more on the situation in las vegas throughout the morning on bbc newsroom live. Monarch airlines has gone into administration overnight, leaving about a 11,000 customers overseas and all of its future bookings, 300,000 of them cancelled. The airline is the largest ever to collapse in the uk and the government says it will be the countrys biggest ever peacetime repatriation. The Tour Operator had been in last ditch talks the transport secretary Chris Grayling has been talking about the operation to bring passengers home. It isa it is a hugely difficult day for passengers and staff. We have done our best to bring in a Contingency Programme four patria asian people overseas in the mediterranean. We have been working with other Tour Operators and airlines in the last 24 operators and airlines in the last 2a hours to try to make sure that at the earliest opportunity people here can rebook their holidays. I have spoken to other Airline Bosses and they said the monarch team are great and were going to hire them and i am confident those people will find alternative employment soon. Chris grayling. There was reported loss of £291 million blamed on a fall in tourism to june this £291 million blamed on a fall in tourism tojune this year, egypt and turkey after terror there. The company employs 2100 members of staff who now face an anxious wait for more news. Lets go to mike cartwright, at the Company Macro head office near luton airport. I think it is fair to say monarch passengers currently abroad tricky much know what is going to happen nextin much know what is going to happen next in terms of returning home but for people who were supposed to fly with monarch and four members of staff, the situation is much less certain. That is right. That is where the confusion is. Last night four monarch aircraft arrived in luton after the passengers disembarked and then the aircraft parked up a couple of hundred metres from where we are standing and now they are in the hands of the administrators. The four flights this morning to italy, portugal, majorca and sweden, they were cancelled. I went into the terminal this morning and i had been speaking to passengers. I spoke to marilyn. There were two members of her family and they were flying to portugal. They heard rumours monarch might go bust and did not think it would happen. Fears were confirmed at four oclock this morning when they were told. Now, they speak about other passengers being concerned. Some going into panic. But they rescued their holiday. They went to ryanair and bought three flights for more than £500. A considerable extra cost to their holiday. Monarch flight out of five uk airports. This is what passengers told us at gatwick early this morning. They gave us a leaflet to say that our flight with monarch had been cancelled. We were panicking. What do we do . Everybody is the flight here, there and everywhere. And it has cost me another £666 to get to where i want to go today. I have already paid 1500. I did actually phone yesterday and i was told our flight phone yesterday and i was told our flight would not be affected as we are travelling. But it has been affected. Everything has been cancelled as of four oclock this morning. We have been travelling near on eight hours from near manchester. And now we face the prospect of travelling back for eight hours to manchester. We expect 12 repatriations lights to come back here at luton this afternoon. We do not know what time. Flights. There are 100,000 passengers to get back from more than 35 airports across europe. Here at the headquarters, 2000 people are wondering what is going to happen to theirjobs. Lets wondering what is going to happen to their jobs. Lets have wondering what is going to happen to theirjobs. Lets have a chat to the administrators. You have been in there talking to members of staff. What have you told them . We had to say to them it was unfortunate that we had to hearfrom say to them it was unfortunate that we had to hear from the say to them it was unfortunate that we had to hearfrom the media. We would expect to speak to employees before anybody. That was a consequence of the timing of the appointment. We had to take the appointment. We had to take the appointment at four oclock this morning because we could not take it at times when aircraft were in the air. We did not have an operator certificate which is required to fly planes so it had to be done at that time. There were no planes in the airand four time. There were no planes in the air and four oclock was the only realistic time when flights came back from tel aviv when we could make the appointment. While we did e mail them at that time most of them probably did not pick it up until they saw Breakfast Television or listen to the radio. That was the first issue. Normally that is not how we do business. Then we gave them the background to what has been going on. We tried to explain where they stand in terms of statutory rights in this situation. It is not very puzzled, especially for a business which has been around a long time. And many people at work for it a long time. We have a great deal of simply for all employees caught up in this. They must be concern. What questions did they ask . Standard questions. I was not pa rt ask . Standard questions. I was not part of the meetings. Many of my collea g u es part of the meetings. Many of my colleagues had meetings with each of the employees up and down the country. At six or seven locations throughout the country and people we re throughout the country and people were speaking to the various sub sets and taking questions. It would be about what happens next and the entitlements with the statutory payment regime. What is the timetable for monarch . You would have to guess, those bred little chance of being able to sell the whole business and therefore the effo rts whole business and therefore the efforts in the next few weeks will be to see if anybody is interested in any material part of it. Depending on how that plays out, it will depend on how it moves on for the employees and the rest of the business. Not all the company has gone into administration. The engineering business continues as normal. That has not been affected. There is no interest in that space. There is no interest in that space. The tour group and the airline business, and a number of related businesses, but these are the main businesses. If you have booked a holiday you are entitled to compensation and a refund. But if you bought a flight it is less certain. What do you say to people concerned about not getting their money back . The best way to look into that is by accessing either the kpmg website or Civil Aviation website which goes into detail on customer arrangements. Website which goes into detail on customerarrangements. Depending website which goes into detail on customer arrangements. Depending on how you paid for it, arrangements to reclaim can be a little bit different. The best way to address it is to go on the website. You cannot pick up on the website, there are two dedicated helplines which will help you address this. Whether you will help you address this. Whether yu pay will help you address this. Whether you pay by credit, debit, paypal or whatever, there are slightly different systems in place. And what about the aircraft . The aircraft are all least. We will contact them at source. They are parked up at them. We will obviously not fly them and beyond that it is up to them what the next steps are. Thank you very much. For passengers it is clearly worrying time. For the people that have worked, some for 50 years, it is very worrying. They are concerned about their future employment. Studio thank you very much. Mike cartwright. Later we will answer any questions you might have on the colla pse questions you might have on the collapse of monarch. That is at half past three this afternoon. You can send your questions on twitter, and by taxing on 61124. The headlines. The government of catalonia says 90 of those who voted in yesterdays banned referendum backed breaking away from spain. Official said 90 of the people who voted backed independence from spain. We can show you live pictures from barcelona were Pro Independence supporters had gathered again today. People have not been off the streets all night in the wake of the referendum. The spanish judgment insisted the poll was illegal. More than 800 people were injured as police stormed polling stations and fired rubber bullets to try to stop people voting. This report is from andrew plant. A voting day that started with hope and ended overshadowed by violence. People we re overshadowed by violence. People were left kicked, thrown and even dragged by their hairfrom polling stations in schools and village halls. One of the policemen took him by the head, take out the glasses and then he started to kick my dad here. The first one was here. It was a vote on independence but the Spanish Government had long before warned the vote was illegal. Last night the Prime Minister said the outcome would not be recognised. Translation i understand the frustration that they feel today and i sincerely regret it but i also tell them the weight to discuss their political claims can never be by breaking the law. National police smashed their way into polling stations. And remove ballot boxes. 0vernight stations. And remove ballot boxes. Overnight in barcelona, there were celebrations from those that want to become independent from spain. Translation there has not been any aggression against police. People have tried to peacefully exercise their rights. This is a victory without any doubt. The region has already got devolved powers controlling its own police, education and health care budget. The Regional Government wants to become an independent state but the spanish courts insist the country will not be divided. Gavin lee is in barcelona. I think many people like me are still finding the scenes from the last 24 hours quite surreal. Now the spanish Justice Minister is saying spain could use constitutional powers to suspend Catalan Autonomy and independence is claimed. 0ur comments like this ratcheting up an already tense situation . It depends which side you are on. Where you stand on the issue. The Spanish Government are talking about article 155 and they have said that if the cata la n 155 and they have said that if the catalan adamant are talking about the right to determination and independence, in 48 hours, Carles Puigdemont the catalan president is saying there is an extraordinary meeting going on and they are looking at what they call the bill for a passage towards independence, thatis for a passage towards independence, that is what the spanish might do. They might counter. But rewind for a second and look at these images. They have gone worldwide. People ostensibly trying to vote and protect the ballot boxes on what was a band referendum. A lot of people today are dusting themselves down. Those who were pushed, punched and kicked outside the ballot stations, there are people i have spoken to, young voters and activists whose family, grandmothers are in hospital this morning, bleeding from the head. There was a lot of footage of different polling stations, 93 were closed down. The Spanish Governments Prime Minister stick with the line up they were acting proportionately given it was a band referendum and it had no right to ta ke referendum and it had no right to take place. Briefly, gavin. Jean Claude Juncker has spoken take place. Briefly, gavin. Jean claudejuncker has spoken to say this is summing to be looked at and he is meeting with the spanish Prime Minister later this afternoon. Something to be looked at. What has the eu response been so far . There has not been a sense of a strong statement yet. We have heard a briefing a short while ago that these events will be monitored. But ultimately the boat was against the spanish constitution. The eu have talked about it as an internal issue but if it is not constitutional it is the equivalent maybe theresa may saying a scotland referendum is not to ta ke saying a scotland referendum is not to take place and suddenly Nicola Sturgeon decides it should take place. It is not being recognised but of course violence is another issue. I must talk about one other thing today. You will see is calm on the streets but sporadically you will see large groups of protesters going past it is calm on the streets. Going past. They are trying to shut the city down in terms of its business here. The tube system and tram network. For one hour and many businesses in support of the movement will close briefly. Not everybody voted. More than half the population did not. Many people are fearful of a wider issue because of the band referendum. Gavin lee in barcelona, thank you. At the Party Conference they are speaking about universal credit. It is of course hugely controversial. A number of tory mps and labour mps and charities at the weekend for a pause in universal credit. David gore is saying the roll out will continue. Scrapping six benefits and replacing them with one and ensuring work a lwa ys them with one and ensuring work always pays. And a point that should be appreciated more, we are giving claimants the increased personalised support of work coaches. They are working with claimants to help eliminate their barriers to work. It is the right vision and i want to pay tribute 2pm for having the courage and determination to pursue this transformative courage and determination to pursue this tra nsformative change. Courage and determination to pursue this transformative change. Pay tribute to iain duncan smith. Split macro applause in101 in 101 job centres up and down the country it is already operating. The evidence is already clear. It is helping more people into work and it is helping more people in work to progress to better jobs. Is helping more people in work to progress to betterjobs. Delivering a simpler system that encourages work and supports aspiration. I understand concerns that have been raised when people first claim they have to wait six weeks or more before they receive a penny. It is the case that what you get in universal credit depends on what you learned in the previous month. Payments are made in arrears. But i am determined to make sure that those who need support early in life will get it. It is already the case if people need help for the first full benefit payments they can quickly get an advance to help tide them over. Increasing numbers of people claim this and sincejune of the majority of new claimants have done so. But i can announce today we are fresh in the guidance to make sure that anybody that needs an advance payment will be offered it up advance payment will be offered it up front. Claimants that want an advance payment will not have to wait six weeks. They will receive this advance within five working days. Applause. And if somebody is in immediate need we will fast track payment meaning they receive it on the same day. Universal credit is working. I can confirm the roll out will continue and to the planned timetable. We are not going to rush things. It is more important to get it right than to do it quickly and it will not be completed until 2022. Across the country, we will continue to transform our welfare system to further support those who aspire to work. Universal credit is the next step on ourjourney. A journey to a welfare state that gives people the help that they need, but does not track them in dependency. A welfare state that believes to support the vulnerable, but that simply signing a cheque is not enough. A welfare state on the side of all those who aspire to fulfil their potential. It isa aspire to fulfil their potential. It is a vision of the welfare state thatis is a vision of the welfare state that is compassionate, practical and aspirational. Conference, in short, it isa aspirational. Conference, in short, it is a conservative vision for a modern welfare state. Thank you. The work and pensions secretary david gauke talking about universal credit. 0ur assistant Political Editor norman smith is there in manchester, and norman, no pause in the roll out of universal credit but mrgauke the roll out of universal credit but mr gauke talked about our fast tracking of payments for people in need but he said this was a transformative need but he said this was a tra nsformative change in need but he said this was a transformative change in the welfare state. That will not satisfy all critics but will it satisfy critics within the party . That depends what happens with the expanded roll out of universal credit next week when all new claimants move on to universal credit and there are concerns that more people will have to wait weeks to get their credit and the risk for the government is it has tinges of the uproar over changes to tax credits and personal independence payments. 14 conservative mps have signalled their disquiet but mr gauke believes with a bit of tweaking and nudging for a job centres to push payments faster, this could work, it is one of the few issues to get much traction here beyond the big beast which is dominating this conference and the boris drama borisjohnson melodrama. The chancellor Philip Hammond pretty much slapping down borisjohnson when he insisted, do not think Boris Johnson borisjohnson when he insisted, do not think borisjohnson is not stackable, everyone is stackable. Boris is boris and his views on this subject are well known but the governments policy is set out by the Prime Minister in her florence speech and we are making steady progress to an stick the process in brussels where we have been in a Holding Pattern over the summer months and the florence speech was signalling an ability to move forward to the next stage of these discussions, to Start Talking about britains future relationship with the eu and about an interim period after march 2019 which will give business clarity and certainty about the situation they will face so they can invest for the future and that is the important prize, we have to re move is the important prize, we have to remove this uncertainty which is damping an otherwise strong economy. A bit ofa damping an otherwise strong economy. A bit of a knock back for Boris Johnson from Philip Hammond, which we didnt get from theresa may yesterday when she was asked about borisjohnson yesterday when she was asked about Boris Johnson and all we yesterday when she was asked about borisjohnson and all we got was a nervous debtor. We will hear from mr hammond shortly. He arrived in the Conference Hall in the last few minutes. 0ne Conference Hall in the last few minutes. One thing he will have to do is reassure business amid growing concerns in some sections of the Business Community about where brexit is going and the sort of transition period that will be open to business so they can add that, after criticism from the chambers of commerce and this morning, really saying the government needs to get its act together over brexit. Im joined by the chief executive of the chambers of commerce, adam marshall, and your anxiety is what about brexit . Its wider than just brexit, this is about competence and coherence in government. Businesses around the country are telling us they need to see that they closed their confidence and willingness to invest depends on a coherent programme. But there is division and disagreement, it sounds like you are not impressed without the government is approaching this. Would like to see the political world as all be more coherent about how it approaches brexit and the domestic economy, there are many things to do at home. Businesses want a transition period of three years or more and they want us to move onto trade talks as fast as possible. Having a unified position in government is important to that. The impact of not having a unified position ive been abroad talking to trading partners and they say it is important we understand where the uk government is going, ourfuture trade with the uk depends on that so it is not just trade with the uk depends on that so it is notjust here at home where business is paying attention to this stuff, it is around the world. How much damage is borisjohnson doing to our economic credibility . much damage is borisjohnson doing to our economic credibility . I think business as a whole is disquieted and worried and requires everyone in politics to come together, talk about what they will do to support business speakers from that comes jobs, competition and productivity, all the things we want to see. We will hear from all the things we want to see. We will hearfrom Philip Hammond shortly, when i am sure he will try to allay some of the concerns we are hearing from the Business Community. We will go straight to an update from las vegas for the police are now saying 200 injured. We located numerous firearms in the room he occupied and it will be a long and tedious investigation. We are bringing in all the resources of the fbi to assist us, in particular their Business Advocates and cs folks to help us process the scene and make sure we get all the evidence we can obtain. I want to provide you with the phone number i saidi provide you with the phone number i said i would provide before, that numberfor said i would provide before, that number for family and friends to get an update on numbers is 186653554. This is a tragic incident and one we have never experienced in this valley, so what we will try to do the best we can to get our First Responders back on their feet in conducting a proper investigation and ensure we have the safety of this community at heart. My condolences go out to the loved ones and their families and we will do the best we can to make it as easy as possible for you to get information as we know it. Its important for you to see the fbi, cou nty important for you to see the fbi, county fire commissioner behind me, it shows we have the full support of all Government Entities to solve the situation as soon as possible. How many Law Enforcement officers lost their lives . I dont know become as there are officers from other jurisdictions attending the concert. Do you have an update on your office rs do you have an update on your officers who were injured . One is critical but stable and one of my off Duty Officers lost his life. Critical but stable and one of my offDuty Officers lost his life. Can you give any more details on firearms found in the room . All that the rifles. We are executing a search warrant on the room as we speak. We are holding up, we will do the best we can and i dont want to say its what were paid to do because nobody is paid to do what we are experiencing right now but the department are doing a fantasticjob and we will have to look out for their well being. And we will have to look out for their wellbeing. He said there were other firearms found in the room. We have officers at his residence and we will execute a search warrant their also shortly. How about the recovery . It is due early in the process , recovery . It is due early in the process, please give us time so we can doa process, please give us time so we can do a good job. I will provide you updates at approximately eight to our window. We dont get a lot of information all at once so please bear with us. People on social media are asking where they can donate blood. We will get that information out but right now i am not co mforta ble out but right now i am not comfortable providing that information because we are over ground at hospitals but United Blood Services have responded and once they get their personnel on the ground we can provide that info. What about people looking for their loved ones . Network to locations where they have been responding, one isa where they have been responding, one is a South Central area command which is near mandalay bay and then here. We would like family to come to Police Headquarters on Martin Luther king so they are not inundated with people in that area. Thank you very much. Have a good night. That is sheriff joe long ba rd ot of night. That is sheriff joe long bardot of Las Vegas Police department, looking very shaken with that update that at least 50 people have been killed and at least 200 have been killed and at least 200 have been killed and at least 200 have been injured in that shooting ata have been injured in that shooting at a concert, a Country Music concert. The gunmen, 64 year old steven paddock, who is now himself dead, fired on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and we think this may be one of the largest Mass Shootings in us history, a sobering thought as the number of dead and injured continue to rise. He was on the 32nd floor with a clear Vantage Point on to his victims below. Police site they are not speculating too much at this stage on what weapons or weapons he used, there was some its mention of rifles, speculation he was using an automatic weapon, the sheriff saying one hovers officers is critical and another who was off duty and attending the concert lost his life in the shooting. Also just to note that the woman who police were looking for, Marilou Danley, who they believe was described as a travelling companion of Stephen Paddock, they have detained her and police are now searching the rim of the Mandalay Hotel where Stephen Paddock fired from and also his home. He was a resident of las vegas. Joining me now is ian thorne from bristol who was on holiday in las vegas. These are incredibly sobering numbers, if you could hear what i was saying, it is now at least 50 people dead and 200 injured. Tell us where you work when the shooting began. Ian, can you hear me . Apologies, we have lost that line. We will try to reconnect with ian who is on holiday in las vegas, from bristol. That may reca ptu re vegas, from bristol. That may recapture those details. Police just ata recapture those details. Police just at a News Conference in the last few moments saying more than 50 dead. The attack was on an open air concert in las vegas, more than 200 injured. The gunman, 64 year old Stephen Paddock, killed by police, and a woman they described as his travelling companion has been detained by police now. We think this is, if not the largest mass shooting in us history, it is certainly one of the largest of its type. There were scenes of panic, if you have been watching this morning, various pieces of footage have come to was as it sounded like automatic gunfire rang out over a prolonged period of people scattering in every direction for trying to find shelter where they were with various reports ofa gunman where they were with various reports of a gunman moving around and people panicking as they tried to flee to somewhere that was out of the way but it turned out the gunman was on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Hotel firing directly downwards on the people at this open air concert. We hope to be able to talk to ian thorne, who was on holiday in las vegas, soon but we have a problem with the line at the moment. More now on one of our other main stories. Lets return to the conservative Party Conference now and the chancellor Philip Hammond is due to give his Conference Speech in the next few minutes. Some introductions first but he is expected to offer his rebuttal of labours criticism of the conservative handling of the economy when he makes his speech. Im told theresa may has just entered the hall and taken her place. Perhaps we can listen into a little of what going on. Conference, thank you for that generous introduction. Let me start by saying how proud i am to stand before you as the first conservative elected mayor of the tees valley. The tees valley is at the very core of labours industrial heartland, an area previously represented by peter mandelson, alan milburn and tony blair. So you can imagine many commentators didnt think i would be with you today. The bbc was so convinced of a labour win that they didnt even carry the result lights and missed a political earthquake in the north east. Result lights and missed a political earthquake in the northeast. He made big headlines when he was elected, the first conservative mayor of the area. And we expect that Philip Hammond will also talk about plans to improve transport infrastructure and transport links to the north, connecting it with hs2 in his speech in a few minutes. We will come back to that speech as soon as it happens but we will try to get to the Business News this are with them, but first, a quick recap of the headlines. At least 50 people have been killed and more than 200 injured after a gunman opened fire on a Country Music festival in las vegas. Police have found this woman, Marilou Danley, who was travelling with the gunman, who has been named as Stephen Paddock. The Civil Aviation authority is flying more than 100,000 monarch passengers back to the uk after the airline collapsed with the loss of more than 2000 jobs. Hello, im ben thompson. As youve been hearing, Monarch Airlines is in administration, leaving 110,000 customers overseas and 300,000 bookings that wont go ahead. The firm has blamed a slump in bookings because of worries over terrorism and a fall in the value of the pound since brexit. But the collapse of monarch has led to a rise in the share of rival airlines, as investors predict theyll benefit from a surge in bookings. Easyjet shares were up 4. 6 , ryanair rose 3. 3 and British Airways owner iag was up 2. 2 . Businesses need more clarity on brexit, according to chancellor, Philip Hammond. Speaking to the bbc, he said the sooner the government gave businesses more certainty about the process, the sooner the economy would pick up. Good morning. Monarch airlines has collapsed into administration. Its 300,000 bookings for future flights and holidays have been cancelled. Monarch is the uks fifth Biggest Airline and the countrys largest ever to go into administration. About 110,000 customers are currently overseas and the government has asked the caa to charter more than 30 aircraft to bring them back to the uk. The terror attacks in turkey and egypt have deprived the airline of a large chunk of its annual revenues, and forced it to compete on heavily congested traditional routes to spain and greece. The short haul market has been described as horrendous by senior Aviation Industry figures. It has already resulted in the collapse of air berlin and placed huge pressure on other airlines. So why did the Firm Collapse . Heres the administrator now appointed to wind down the airline. The decision really was a result of continuing losses. Losses had been sustained for quite some time, forecast to continue, mainly as a result of depressed prices in the market, overcapacity in the short haul market has meant prices have been depressed for some time. To give an example of that, the company flew 14 more passengers last year but for £100 million less revenue and on the cost base it also significantly increased as a result of the adverse movement of the pound against the dollar, where many of the costs of the company like fuel and handling charges in dollars, as a result of which the revenue is down, costs are up, significant losses are unfortunately forecast to continue, so that is really why were here today. The view of the administrator, their work now cut out to find out what it means for the business, but what does it mean for passengers . Earlier i spoke to simon calder from the bbcs travel show. If you have woken up to this news you will wonder what to do but relax, spend the day by the pool, if you are not flying back today, you will be flying back to the uk at more or less the same time as you we re more or less the same time as you were supposed to, possibly to a different airport, you might flight to london luton and have to get a bus to gatwick but you will be looked after. They are just come back from that civilisation authority in london for they set up at contingency airline from the gulf. If you book a package holiday and have not yet travelled, you will get your money back, but if you book a flight only come it is a matter of going to your card issuer. Credit ca rd going to your card issuer. Credit Card Companies have to hand back the money, debit Card Companies usually will but only if you have been to the administrators kpmg first and they said no. A lot of People Choose to use that the car so you dont pay the fees. Except on monarch, they abandoned credit card surcharges so more people would have used a credit ca rd more people would have used a credit card then for other airlines with a surcharge, so it will be messy and although most people will get most or all of their money back, they will lose their holiday and beer at a busy time in europe, hundreds of thousands of passengers waiting to travel and their plans are in tatters. That was a full update of what it can mean for you and your rights and getting your money back on the bbc website. You were up to date. We will bring you more on that Las Vegas Shooting in the next few minutes, we think this may be the biggest mass shooting of its type in us history, police now saying more than 50 people dead and more than 200 injured. You can watch the chancellor Philip Hammonds speech on bbc two but now lets look at the weather. We had rather blustery start to the morning across the northern half of the uk but also some showers giving us some decent rainbows, look at the start of that one, fantastic shot from north yorkshire. The reason for the strong winds and showers, this low pressure is situated to the top of scotland and that brings the white lines close together to give us blustery conditions, most of the winds should ease away except for in the far north east of scotland where it stays windy this afternoon. Southern counties of england will see the cloud increasing, showers moving in, some bright spells breaking through and temperatures of 16 or 17 degrees. Across the midlands, northern parts, some sunny spells, a few showers into southern scotland, the best sunshine in scotland across the best sunshine in scotland across the east but still pretty windy in that far north east corner. 0ne the east but still pretty windy in that far north east corner. One or two showers that far north east corner. One or two s howe rs a cross that far north east corner. One or two showers across northern ireland, and the odd shower across parts of wales, but in the south west of england, the cloud will increase and there will be rain moving in. This is at 4pm but that rain will extend further east, skirting southern coastal counties this evening and into tonight, finally clearing away, then for many we will see clear spells, it will turn chilly, one or two showers around coastal parts of north west england and the coast of scotla nd north west england and the coast of scotland but temperatures in towns and cities between eight and 12 degrees, the work in the countryside, so were chilly start to tuesday but there will be sunshine to start off with, a few showers across scotland, into north west england and north wales, then in the afternoon the cloud will increase but for many a dry day with some bright weather and temperatures about 13 16. On tuesday night this area of High Pressure will move further south and weather fronts riding in on top of that bring some rainfor riding in on top of that bring some rain for scotland and northern ireland, that will head south as the day goes on but for many southern areas, when state not looking too bad with some fine weather and sunshine and top temperatures of 1215d. This is bbc news and these are the top stories developing at midday at least 50 people have died and over 200 are injured after a gunman opened fire on a Country Music festival at a las vegas hotel. It is the biggest mass shooting in us history. He has been named as local man, Stephen Paddock. He was shot dead on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. As far as his history and background, we have not completed that part of the investigation yet but we located numerous firearms in the room he occupied. We saw first officers, about eight, running in to the lift via 31 lift bay. They were going up, they were coming down, going this way that way, we were told to get out we were told to get in. Police say they think theyve found this woman, Marilou Danley, who was travelling with the gunman. We will have the latest on the story this hour. Good afternoon. Welcome to bbc newsroom live. It is monday, october two. At least 50 people have died and more than 200 have been wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Country Music festival in las vegas, in the biggest mass shooting in us history. Police say the suspect is a 64 year old local man who has been named as steven colwell. He opened fire on the outdoor event Stephen Paddock. Police later shot him dead. Footage shows people attending the festival crouching down or dashing for cover has bursts of gunfire are heard. The people were forced to take shelter and las vegas airport was closed to flight. Sheriffjoe lombardi gave this update to the shooting. This investigation is going to be long and contracted before we get to the bottom of Everything Associated with it. One of the things i want to update you with is we have located the vehicles that i put out in the first briefing. We believe, we are confident, but what not 100 , that we have located the female person of interest. I want people to feel confident and calm in that aspect that we have accomplished a lot in a short period. I do not know the number of injuries yet but we are looking at in excess of 50 individuals dead and over 200 injured at this point. I do not want to give an inaccurate number and thatis to give an inaccurate number and that is why i am portraying it in this manner. The suspect, i am going to provide you with his identity. At this point. His name is Stephen Paddock. Date of birth, fourth of the ninth, 1953. As far as his history and background is concerned, we have not yet completed that part of the investigation but we have located numerous firearms in the room he occupied. As i stated earlier, it is going to be a long and tedious investigation. I am bringing in all the resources of the fbi to assist us in this investigation. In particular to the victims, witnesses and cia postdocs to help process the scene cia folks to process the scene. Sheriff of the Las Vegas Police department, who said one of his officers died. He was off duty and attending the concert when he was killed. We are going to play for you some images taken from somebodys mobile phone. At the point at which the gunman was firing shots. Lets listen to this prolonged sound of gunfire. Very disturbing. Apologies. Problems with sound here. What was happening at this point was people were either running or ducking for cover. As the gunmen fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel onto the crowd gathered for the concert below. Gun man. At first people did not know where the gunfire was coming from. I think we can listen to that now. Gunshots. These images and sounds, utterly shocking, as we now know the death toll is at least 50 people. The number of people injured is at least 200 in what is the biggest mass shooting in us history. On the line now is iain thornley, he is from bristol and he is on holiday in las vegas. Dreadful statistics. Incredibly sobering. Can you begin by telling us where you were when you heard the gunfire . We were out down the strip and out for a meal at the time. Probably about 400 yards down the road from where the shooting happened. What did you hear and see . We were too far away. The first we knew about it was we were ina first we knew about it was we were in a restaurant and the police came in and cleared the whole restaurant. Staff and customers. They then told us staff and customers. They then told us there had been a shooting at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. We were staying in the Tropicana Hotel which is directly opposite. The Police Cordon was formed and they would not allow anybody through. Everybody was in a state of panic, basically. Presumably you have not been able to get through yet to return to your hotel . Well, we did after probably about one hour. The police pushed everybody back and we just went indoors, to any bar or pub that was openjust to get indoors, to any bar or pub that was open just to get away, get off of the street. There were six of us in our party, we are going across america and there is only three of us america and there is only three of us out tonight. We decided to try and get back to our hotel. Which we did. We went round the back streets. And actually got into our hotel somehow without being challenged, as well. Which was strange. Maybe we should not have done it but we just wa nted should not have done it but we just wanted to get back into the hotel and back to safety, really. What are your thoughts as you hear about the death toll and that this is now the largest, the biggest mass shooting in us history . Well, this is unbelievable. When we were first told, only two people had died and 24 injured and since we got back at the hotel and looked at the events as they unfold, now it is more than 50 dead and more than 200 injured, it is just 50 dead and more than 200 injured, it isjust mind 50 dead and more than 200 injured, it is just mind blowing and unbelievable. I do not know if you have encountered anybody, talked to anybody who was at the concert, who was getting away from the concert, or anybody that has been able to describe to you what happened. Not really, no. Alli describe to you what happened. Not really, no. All i know is that the other three in our party were actually at our hotel at the time. And the hotel staff ushered everybody from the hotel into the basement area, to safety. I believe they have released them nowjust three hours later. Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us much for taking the time to talk to us about these shocking events in las vegas. Ian thorne from bristol on holiday in las vegas. We can talk to our correspondent, Barbara Platt usher, who is in washington. Just talking to that holiday maker, lets reflect on the fact that in the space of a couple of hours the death toll went from two up to now, we are told, at least 50 people. At least 200 people injured. It is truly shocking, isnt it . Yes, that announcement was made i think in just the last ten minutes. When police first came out, they came out and gave the figures, it was 20, 30 more, 50, the local sheriff said. That was 50 plus and with 200 plus injured, some critically, so they are expecting that figure to go even higher, which would make it the largest mass shooting in us recent history. More than the number dead at the nightclub last year in 2016, when 49 people were killed. A horrifying statistic and it could get higher yet. I think it bears repetition, barbara, you talked about the pulse nightclub shooting, but this is the bigot shooting of its type in us history, in a country which is accustomed, unfortunately, two events of this kind. That is right. It is not a distinction anybody would want, but it stands out for that reason. It was a concert, as you know. Packed with people and the gun man had a high Vantage Point. He started from a hotel room on the 32nd floor with automatic weapons. He had a wide range of powerful weapons and a lot of people were packed together at this concert. And that is the reason why the death toll is so high. As people were fleeing in panic, pushing and shoving and travelling, ido pushing and shoving and travelling, i do not know of any deaths were related to that, but certainly a lot of casualties. I think when Something Like this happens People Living outside the us think about the gun laws and find it difficult to understand why the laws are set up to understand why the laws are set up in quite the way they are. One of our reporters earlier was saying that in response to events like this you often find that more people go out and buy guns, because they are afraid. It seems to be self perpetuating in a way. Afraid. It seems to be selfperpetuating in a way. That is sometimes the response to gun attacks. People feel they have to protect themselves, defend themselves and it is not a big stretch for some of them to decide they need a weapon to do that. It varies from state to state what kind of guns you can carry and whether you can carry them openly or not. Las vegas is very lax with rules. You can carry assault weapons, you can carry them openly. There are no restrictions and i dont think you have to register them. The sheriff said quite a number of rivals have been found in hotel room, the hotel room of the suspect. So came maximum armed. You remember after Mass Shootings under the timer president 0bama, he responded with almost a weary frustration. The time of president 0bama. And he talked about tightening gun laws. I do not think we can expect that from president trump. He has not actually said anything yet. We are waiting. He has not responded on twitter yet, which he often does. But it is more likely he often does. But it is more likely he will talk about terrorism than gun laws. Thank you very much, Barbara Platt usher. I was checking Donald Trumps twitter account in the last few seconds. Nothing from the last few seconds. Nothing from the president as of yet. But we would expect something from him. Nothing on his twitter account yet. Lets try and take stock of what has happened in the last few hours. This report is from regan morris. Gunshots some people thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks. Fireworks are not unusual in the United States and neither are Mass Shootings. But then the horror of what was happening set in for the concertgoers. The shots fired down from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino. We cant see anything. It is dark. All we hear is gunshots going off. It keeps going and then somebody said, he is reload in, run everybody gets up and starts running. You see people getting trampled. People laying on the ground. People are bloody everywhere. I saw a girl and her whole face and chest was bloody. The streets of las vegas were packed. After initial speculation about multiple guns, police said he was a lone wolf and a lone resident. They have said the shooter is now dead. We located numerous firearms in the room he occupied. As i stated earlier, it is going to be a long and tedious investigation. Several Police Officers were shot and wounded in the attack. The shooter was identified as Stephen Paddock, a white man in his 60s who lived in nevada, just over one hours drive from las vegas. Police have not said what they thought the motive was for the shooting. But whatever it was it is bound to spark another debate about americas gun laws. Studio in the last 60 seconds, while we were watching that report, donald trump as tweeted his reaction. He is saying, my warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas Shooting. God bless you. The president of the United States tweeting his warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the Las Vegas Shooting. God bless you. We wait to see if there is anything further from donald trump. I would expect there will be. That is his initial response on twitter. Also a statement from the front secretary, borisjohnson. I statement from the front secretary, Boris Johnson. I am statement from the front secretary, borisjohnson. Iam horrified by statement from the front secretary, borisjohnson. I am horrified by the awful attack at a Music Festival in las vegas. The United Kingdom stands with the American People against this indiscriminate violence. My thoughts are with all those caught up thoughts are with all those caught up in it. His statement continues, the foreign and Commonwealth Office is in contact with las vegas authorities to establish if any british people were caught up in the attack. We are ready to help however we can. That statement from the front secretary, Boris Johnson. Lets return now to our reporter regan morris in los angeles. Since we last spoke, that death toll has increased substantially. It sounds like the authorities expect it may go like the authorities expect it may 9 up like the authorities expect it may go up further, unfortunately. Like the authorities expect it may go up further, unfortunatelym like the authorities expect it may go up further, unfortunately. It is more than 50 people, they said. And 200 wounded. That makes this the worst mass shooting in modern american history. It is an extraordinary number. The hospital is apparently are just overwhelmed, working around the clock. It is four oclock in the morning, past four oclock in the morning, past four oclock in the morning, past four oclock in the morning now in las vegas. The streets are getting more quiet according to reporters. But it is still a massive crime scene. They have identified Stephen Paddock and said police were asking for the publics help finding his companion, Marilou Danley but they have since arrested her. They have a search warrant for the home they shared, about 80 miles outside of las vegas. It is just extraordinary, these horrific images coming out. All night people have been sharing a social media videos. They were at a concert. So many people film at a concert. So many people film at a concert. People want to capture that forfamily concert. People want to capture that for family and friends. And because of that so many people were filming and there are so many disturbing images coming out. One woman that i saw said she was laying underneath her husband and he was protecting her. She said they felt like sitting ducks. People were huddling on top of each other trying to protect each other. And take cover. They did not know where the bullets were coming from. He was on the 32nd floor of mandalay bay casino, firing down on people indiscriminately. It went on and on. And of course, regan, everybody wants to know who was this man and why on earth did he carry out this atrocity . So do i. I dont know yet. We dont know many details about him. He hasjust been identified. He does not have a criminal record, police have said he is not a us military veteran, we know that. He is 64 years old. He is a white male. They dont believe he is formally connected to any terrorist organisation. What was his motive . I do not know. He is shooting people at a country western concert. We do not yet know what his motive was. Regan, thank you very much for that. Police are saying that they are searching the hotel room and also Stephen Paddocks home to try and establish what his motive may have been and talking as well to the woman they described as his travelling companion, who they have now detained. I can talk now to a photographerfor now detained. I can talk now to a photographer for the Las Vegas Review journal. Hejoins us photographer for the Las Vegas Review journal. He joins us from Sunrise Hospital where many of the injured are being treated. What can you tell us from where you are . have been here since about one oclock this morning. The scene is a lot more quiet than it was earlier. You are seeing people coming by and it looks like the families of some of the victims are outside right now and you can see a handful of people, three and four but earlier there was a lot of people outside. Gathering. As someone who works in las vegas, tell us about how you are feeling about this horrendous shooting, the biggest mass shooting in us history . I was flying back into town today, actually, from missouri. I got in at around seven point 30. And i heard sirens going off. Half past seven. And you know, right the way, what do you know . It is a mass shooting. The last we saw reported was at least 50 dead and 200 injured. You know, speaking to someone earlier, at Sunrise Hospital, he said he was at the concert and one of his relatives was hit on his side, near his ribs. And he wanted surgery. It demonstrated what is going on but he said he would be ok. But many others were not. Las vegas of course is somewhere where many americans, many people from abroad, go to be entertained, to enjoy themselves. These were people enjoying a concert. It was meant to be a fun night. There must be a very strange atmosphere now. Yes. The same man was saying that it will have a lasting effect in the community down the road. With all the tourism in las vegas, he had a concern, you know, the reputation it might have. You know, yes. Thank you for talking to us. A photographerfrom the Las Vegas Review journal. Joining me on the line now is forbes riley, who was on a balcony at the Mandalay Bay Hotel at the time of the shooting. Thank you for talking to us. What floor where you on . What floor are we on . The 48th floor. I ama floor are we on . The 48th floor. I am a Television Presenter and i am here with a couple of other people ata here with a couple of other people at a wonderful party. I am still stuck on the balcony four hours later. 0n stuck on the balcony four hours later. On my left hand side i can see the big mandalay bay sign. I can see the big mandalay bay sign. I can see the big mandalay bay sign. I can see the strip and looking to the right, we were literally on top of the concert. About 20 floors above the concert. About 20 floors above the shooting. Which isjust the concert. About 20 floors above the shooting. Which is just insane. When you think the gunman was on the 32nd floor, he had an absolutely clear adVantage Point to attack people below him. Oh, my god. You could just see everybody. We were taking photos and one of my collea g u es taking photos and one of my colleagues took a video and we were looking for the fireworks because thatis looking for the fireworks because that is what it sounded like. It is very disorientating when somebody said it is gunfire and you think, it cant be because it was so rapid fire and intense. I heard a gentleman talk, he was at the concert and how horrific it must have been. People werejust running. We were up here literally looking and it was like a movie. What is going on . And people were lying on the floor dead and you think, no, that cant be. In the last 20 minutes of going, oh, my god, we are jumping on our phones to find news and it was all over twitter and we are like, oh my god, i am still looking right now from the same floor. We have been here under lockdown for the last four hours. The strip is completely closed. There are still cops and sirens and flashing lights everywhere. It is the scariest thing i have ever been doing in my life. As soon as we knew what was going on and suddenly guys came in and, everybody, hits the deck, get down and they had guns on them. We did not know it was the good guys. The swat team. I called my kids and i was crying and going, oh, my god, it is that moment in a movie and it is actually real. I was grateful it was just the good guys telling us to get down. I am so sick right now. We are all, the whole room is completely in shock. What strikes me and i am sure many people are sharing exactly those feelings, what strikes me is as we watched the early reports coming in, people were saying there are reports there was a gunman here, a gunman there. The shooter was moving around. But it seems all the time he was in that one position. He had a clear view of the people he was targeting. Of course, people want to know now, why on earth, why would someone do this . What motivated this man, Stephen Paddock, a 64 year old man from las vegas itself to carry out this shooting . I would say that what is interesting in that first hour, they shut down the street and it was absolutely bizarre and freaky. That is what everybody is reacting to. The fact it is just one, i am so sick to my stomach and also afraid for what is going to happen. Before you go to the casino, there is screaming and every public place you go to, how can you go to a concert . How can go to, how can you go to a concert . How can i let my two 14 year olds go to any event, like a Football Game . Knowing it is so easy to do this. 0ne knowing it is so easy to do this. One guy. 200 people. How do you think this will be treated in the us . We have talked a little bit, although it is very early days, we have talked a little bit about the inevitable conversation about gun laws. It seems this is an american man who carried out this attack. Will it be treated as a terrorist incident . Clearly people have been subjected to terror. But when it comes to the conversation on gun laws in the us you have to ask, will anything change as a result of this . I grew anything change as a result of this . Igrew up anything change as a result of this . I grew up shooting guns. Guns dont kill people. People do. But i do think there does need to be a huge law. Why does one want access to a machine gun . If you have a rifle and a pistol, you could kill a personal two. This guy devastated 200 people from half a mile away. A person or two. What do you think needs to happen . I dont know. I dont know if you can stop certain things. If a man wants to walk into a particular place struck with gunpowder and do a suicide bomb, you cannot stop him. I dont know if you can. It is very stressful right now. It would be helpful to find out what we can do and what the motive was for this. Did hejust and what the motive was for this. Did he just snap . And what the motive was for this. Did hejust snap . Nobody and what the motive was for this. Did he just snap . Nobody snaps this big. It is the largest shooting in the history of the us. I am sad. I am so devastated and sad that people who went out for a good time. Last week i went to. And my mum asked me where i was going but nobly was worried about me going to las vegas, you know . Thank you for taking the time to talk to us and take care, forbes riley. Speaking to us from a balcony on the Mandalay Hotel, of course it was the 32nd floor from the hotel from which Stephen Paddock, the gunman, opened fire on the concertgoers below. Just a reminder that the President Donald Trump has been tweeting in the last few minutes and this is that message. Few minutes and this is that message. My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas Shooting. God bless you. Iam families of the terrible Las Vegas Shooting. God bless you. I am sure we would expect more from the president on this but for the moment he has been tweeting is condolences and sympathies to the victims of this shooting in las vegas. Monique and paul were at the concert in the front of the crowd when the gunman started firing. They told cbs news what they saw and heard. We were centrestage, right at the front, dancing and having a good time. All ofa dancing and having a good time. All of a sudden we heard pop, pop, pop, cou ntless of a sudden we heard pop, pop, pop, countless times. We it was firecrackers. It kept on going and then he fired another 15, 20 rounds and that is when we realised it was and that is when we realised it was a fully automatic. Sounded like a high powered rifle. We hit the ground and laid there, hanging onto each other. It was quiet for a bit and then fired another 30 rounds. And then quiet and then every time he stopped, he was reloading, we got up he stopped, he was reloading, we got up and started making our way towards the fence and he started shooting again and we hit the ground. I must have heard him do it at least 15 times. What were you thinking when you are lying there and all of these shots again and ain . And all of these shots again and again . We are thinking this is not happening to us but at the same time, i need to run for my life but i need to hold onto my husband. We need to stay together. We do not need to stay together. We do not need to stay together. We do not need to panic. We need to get away from this. Did you see anybody get . We didnt see anybody get fit but on the right hand side of the stage there we re right hand side of the stage there were people calling for a medic and somebody had been hit on the right side of the stage. Then as we were leaving through the parking lot, we could see people laying on the ground beneath the tilt positions so we knew there were a few, half a dozen. You got out of that concert venue and they directed you into the Mandalay Hotel. Fences were being kept down because we were clap so people were kicking down fences, we made it into the back and were directed into the mandalay bay and as we were coming through we didnt know it but apparently he was u psta i rs know it but apparently he was upstairs shooting in the rooms, so we made it over to mcdonalds. You camea we made it over to mcdonalds. You came a long way down the strip here. And you say it seemed like as many as 15 times he reloaded. Easily, with at least 30 rounds he was firing from each magazine. With at least 30 rounds he was firing from each magazinem with at least 30 rounds he was firing from each magazine. It was four or five minutes of gunshot. My sister had video so we were hiding behind cars and trying to get as far away as we could. When the shooting stopped, you would run and then when you heard bullets you hit the dirt. We werent running, people were nice and calm, a few people were trying to run but we stop them because it went down into a goose neck and started blocking up, so everybody can be kept going and we made it out, and then we ran, and once we made it to the streets we started to run. You say as people were exiting with all these builds, people work calm. Everybody is trying to get out as fast as they cant but it is still like, dont push, dont trample, it was surreal to see everyone looking out for everyone and trying to escape. Many more people could have been hurtjust getting out of whats really was it when youve got out, you are out here and well away was i dont know if it is hit me yet. It was still nervous coming all the way from here because we dont know if they have got him or phone temp so it was nerve racking making our ways here. Do you think it was just one shooter, given that there was reloading. You could hear the co nsta nt reloading. You could hear the constant pop pop pop, it wasnt like to gun shooting, then quiet for 15 seconds, then pop pop pop, again. That was many and paul do mass speaking to john that was many and paul do mass speaking toJohn Blackstone that was many and paul do mass speaking to John Blackstone from that was many and paul do mass speaking toJohn Blackstone from cbs news. We saw local officers running into the lift bay, going up and down, we are told to get out, we are told to get in. Police believe they have found a woman named as Marilou Danley who was travelling with the gunman. Police described the early stages of their investigation. Relocate firearms in the room he occupied and it will be a long and tedious investigation. More on that story because at least 50 people have died and more than 200 wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Country Music festival in las vegas. Its the deadliest mass shooting in modern us history. Police say the suspect, a 64 year old local man cold stephen opened fire from the 32nd floor of the of the Mandalay Hotel in las vegas. Police later shot him dead. Footage shows people crouching for cover as long bursts of gunfire or heard. Parts of the area were shot down as armed police arrived, people we re down as armed police arrived, people were forced to take shelter or they could even at las vegas airport, which was closed to flights. A short time ago police said they had no detailed the gunmans travelling companion, Marilou Danley. 0ur reporter has the latest. Some people thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks. Fireworks are not unusual in the United States and neither are Mass Shootings. But then the horror of what was happening set in for the concertgoers. The shots fired down from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay casino. We cant see anything. It is dark. All we hear is gunshots going off. It keeps going and then somebody said, he is reloading, run everybody gets up and starts running. You see people getting trampled. People laying on the ground. People are bloody everywhere. I saw a girl and her whole face and chest was bloody. The streets of las vegas were packed. After initial speculation about multiple gunmen, authorities said he was a lone wolf and a lone resident. But whatever it was, it is bound to spark another debate about americas gun laws. The us president and the foreign secretary here have taken to twitter to react to the attack. Donald trump offered his warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas Shooting, while Boris Johnson families of the terrible Las Vegas Shooting, while borisjohnson said he was horrified by the indiscriminate attack and said he was looking into whether any britishers citizens were involved. Ian thorne is from bristol and is on holiday in las vegas. We were too far away and the first we knew about it was we were in the restaurant and the police came in and cleared the whole restaurant out of everybody, staff and customers. The police pushed everybody back and we just went indoors, to any bar or pub that was open just to get away, get off of the street. There were six of us in our party, we are going across america so there is only three of us out tonight. We decided to try and get back to our hotel. Which we did. We went round the back streets. And actually got into our hotel somehow without being challenged, as well. Which was strange. Maybe we should not have done it but we just wanted to get back into the hotel and back to safety, really. What are your thoughts as you hear about the death toll and that this is now the largest, the biggest mass shooting in us history . Well, this is unbelievable. When we were first told only two people had died and 24 injured and since we got back at the hotel and looked at the events as they unfold, now it is more than 50 dead and more than 200 injured, it is just mind blowing and unbelievable. I dont know if you have encountered anybody, talked to anybody who was at the concert, who was getting away from the concert, or anybody that has been able to describe to you what happened. Not really, no. All i know is that the other three in our party were actually at our hotel at the time. And the hotel staff ushered everybody from the hotel into the basement area, to safety. 0ther eyewitnesses have been describing the chaos and confusion during the attack. We saw first officers, about eight, running in to the lift via 31 lift bay. They were going up, they were coming down, going this way that way, we were told to get out, we were told to get in. We just hear gunshots going off. Then use your people getting trampled. I was looking on the ground, people were getting trampled everywhere. People were pushing over grills, burning their hands on grills trying to get through because there are barbecues everywhere. There are kids everywhere. It was crazy. And then we make it out and we run to the Tropicana Hotel. It is right next door. We get inside and we tried to figure out where to get out and where to go. And we heard somebody yell, the shooter is in here everybody starts running out of there. Surejoan sure Joan Lombardo gave sureJoan Lombardo gave this update about the shooting. There were numerous firearms in the rooms that he occupied. We are bringing in all the resources of the fbi to assist us in this investigation, advocates and cs folks to make sure we get all the evidence we can obtain. How many Law Enforcement office rs lost their lives . I dont know become as there are officers from other jurisdictions attending the concert. We dont have an update on that yet. I will provide you updates at approximately a two hour window. That was sheriffjoe lombardo from the Las Vegas Police department, clearly shaken by events and reflecting on the fact that one of his own officers was among the dead. 0ur north america correspondent james cook has just arrived in las vegas and has been tweeting his first impressions. He says. The deadliest shooting in modern us history of its type and i think we can show you some live pictures now from las vegas which reflect what james has been saying from a place thatis james has been saying from a place that is locked down, blue lights everywhere as the Emergency Services saturated the area as soon as reports of the shooting came to light, and in the background there, the mandalay bay casino hotel, from the mandalay bay casino hotel, from the 32nd floor of which the gunman, Stephen Paddock, wreaked such destruction, firing to the crowd below him at this open air Country Music consort, killing at least 50 people, injuring at least 200 others. A short while ago i spoke to forbes riley, who was on a balcony on another floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel at the time of the shooting and she explained what she saw. I am a Television Presenter and i am here with a couple of other people at a wonderful party. I am still stuck on the balcony four hours later. On my left hand side i can see the big mandalay bay sign. I can see the strip and looking to the right, we were literally on top of the concert. About 20 floors above the shooting. Which is just insane. When you think the gunman was on the 32nd floor, he had an absolutely clear adVantage Point to attack people below him. Oh, my god. You could just see everybody. We were taking photos and one of my colleagues took a video and we were looking for the fireworks because that is what it sounded like. It is very disorientating and somebody said it is gunfire and you think, it cant be because it was so rapid fire and intense. I heard a gentleman talk, he was at the concert and how horrific it must have been. People were falling, you have no idea. People were just running. We were up here literally looking and it was like a movie. What is going on . And people were lying on the floor dead and you think, no, that cant be. Over the last 20 minutes of going, oh, my god, we are jumping on our phones to find news and it was all over twitter and we are like, oh my god, i am still looking right now from the same floor. We have been here under lockdown for the last four hours. The strip is completely closed. There are still cops and sirens and flashing lights everywhere. Everything is shut down. It is the scariest thing i have ever been through in my life. As soon as we knew what was going on and suddenly guys came in and, everybody, hit the deck, get down and they had guns on them. We did not know it was the good guys. The swat team. Iran i ran outside iran outside and i ran outside and ducked iran outside and ducked behind a potted plant. I called my kids and i was crying and going, oh, my god, it is that moment in a movie and it is actually real. I was grateful it was just the good guys telling us to get down. But i am so sick right now. The number has gone up to 50. We are all, the whole room is completely in shock. Forbes wryly speaking to me earlier. Paul and money to told our colleague Jason Blackstone what they heard. We were centrestage, right at the front, dancing and having a good time. That was paul and many, who worked at the concert, and this is the scene at las vegas. Some may one responders on the scene and in the background of the upshot, the Mandalay Bay Hotel, from the 32nd floor of which the gunman, Stephen Paddock, fired on the crowd below him attending that open air Country Music concert. Police say at least 50 people dead, at least 200 injured in what is the largest mass shooting in modern us history. There will of course be more on that in the news at1pm course be more on that in the news at 1pm but first lets look at the weather forecast. An autumnal flavour this week but if you have a bit of shelter you will get some sunshine. Big waves in northern ireland, the strongest wind has been through northern ireland, close to 60 mph gusts in banker but the strongest winds will ease as that drifts to scandinavia, the strongest winds in the far Northern Isles and then we will see rain in the south west later. A blustery afternoon with scattered showers to the north west, with more shelter comes more sun but it will not feel especially warm, we will see gales continuing into the far north, elsewhere lighter winds but a cluster of showers, similar for northern ireland. For wales and South West England we will have rain starting to gather but in shelter across east england and east angler, we will keep sunshine and warmth. By the end of the day, that when hovering around the m4 corridor and it will brush with southern fringes as we go through into monday evening. 0n as we go through into monday evening. On tuesday morning, skies will fall clear with lighter winds and temperatures will fall away, 911d in and temperatures will fall away, 9 11d in towns and cities, hopefully a dry one with spells of sunshine and generally tuesday will be a quieter day, more of a breeze up into the north and a cluster of showers but sunny interludes for many of us and temperatures will set at 1016d. As many of us and temperatures will set at 10 16d. As we push into wednesday we keep an area of High Pressure across england and wales, that will keep things quiet, toppling over that height are weather fronts with tightly squeezed isobars, winds will remaina tightly squeezed isobars, winds will remain a feature, a blustery day across scotland and the deadliest mass shooting in recent us history at least 50 people are dead and more than 200 wounded in las vegas. Shooting into the crowd at a Music Festival. A 64 year old suspect opened fire from the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel before being shot dead by police. All of a sudden we heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop countless times and we all thought it was firecrackers. And it kept on going, then he fired for a bit and fired another 15 20 rounds and thats when we realised it was a fully automatic sounded like a high powered rifle. Police have named the gunman as 64 year old Stephen Paddock a local resident not thought to have any militant connections. As far as his history and background, we havent completed
