The sunshine policy widespread across the uk today for the remembrance sunday. But there is a price to pay. It will feel especially chile. Chilly. Thousands of services will be held gcioss thousands of services will be held across the uk to remember those who died in two world wars and other conflicts. In london, veterans and military personnel willjoin conflicts. In london, veterans and military personnel will join members of the royal family for the National Service of remembrance. The queen and duke of edinburgh attending last nights evening of remembrance. This is one of the most significant days in the royal calendar, won the duke, despite being retired, didnt want to miss. But this year there will be one significant difference. Her majesty is handed the wreath, which she places first at the foot of the cenotaph. The service of remembrance has changed little over the years and one of the key moments has been when the queen lays her wreath on the cenotaph on behalf of written under the commonwealth. It is a role she has performed all but six times throughout the 65 year reign. Only pregnancy or absence due to foreign royal tours have prevented herfrom doing so. This year, instead of joining the line up on whitehall, the queen and duke of edinburgh will instead watch proceedings from the balcony of the foreign and commonwealth office. The prince of wales will lay the queens wreath on her behalf. Trumpets sound the decision to watch, rather than physically take part, in one of the key royal engagements will not have been taken key royal engagements will not have been ta ken lightly. Key royal engagements will not have been taken lightly. It is a recognition that the queen is now 91 yea rs old recognition that the queen is now 91 years old and the ceremony requires standing in often called cold temperatures for nearly half an hour and navigating the way back. But the change is now perhaps the most visible change yet of the gradual transition of responsibilities from the queen to her son and heir. One day it will be prince charless role as king to lead the nation in remembrance. We can now speak to our royal correspondent. There is a different feeling to the remembrance commemorations this year . Indeed and at the moment are slightly damp feeling to the commemorations. Hopefully the rain will settle down by the time the service and the two minutes silence happens. Theres a small but significant change, with the queen watching from the Foreign Office balcony, you can see behind me, rather than standing on the steps of whitehall as she has done for pretty much all of the 65 year reign. So she will stand on the balcony with other female members of the royalfamily, balcony with other female members of the royal family, the balcony with other female members of the royalfamily, the duchess of cambridge included, and also of course the duke of edinburgh. No surprise really that despite the fa ct surprise really that despite the fact that he has recently retired, it was always thought it was one of the big event he would always want to participate in. Of course a former military man himself. So we do expect both of them to be watching from the balcony. I can say this morning all of the roads are already closed off and theres a huge security presence here in central london, as you would expect. And as normal the two minutes silence will take place at 11 oclock. This is the National Service of remembrance. There will be service is taking place at thousands of memorials across the uk and also much further appeal. There are many military personnel who are on operation abroad and they will ta ke on operation abroad and they will take part, remembering all those have been injured or killed in conflict past and present. But its all in a days work for florida fish and wildlife who were called into remove the creature. Using wire lassos, the team were able to keep their distance and pull the gator out of the garage. They were then able to tie its mouth shut so they could safely take it away. As you can see they got some kind of wire on it. They tied the mouth shut very wisely. I wouldnt try to tie up that mouth with a bit of string. I have enough trouble trying to persuade my daughter to open her mouth to brush their teeth, let alone the tops of an alligator that alligator looks like it has had enough. It has given up the fight. Presumably it is being taken somewhere slightly lovely, hopefully. I wouldnt fancy that job susan will have the full Weather Forecast inafew will have the full Weather Forecast in a few minutes. In a little under five hours time, millions of people across britain will fall silent to remember those who gave their lives for this country. Remembrance sunday is not only about those who fought in past conflicts though, its also a chance to think about current servicemen and women. Alexander owen is head of Armed Forces Engagement at the Royal British legion and joins us from close to the cenotaph on whitehall in london. Good morning and thanks for talking to us. A hugely important day for you today . Yes, good morning. It absolutely is. We are going to have 10,000 members of the Armed Forces Community marching past the cenotaph today and its a really important moment for the nation, as we remember those who fell. Inevitably a day like today theres a huge on whats going on at the cenotaph and other Memorial Services around the country. But for you this is a job every day of the year. Give us some insight into your work away from remembrance sunday. Yes, absolutely. I think its really important that while we do commemorate those who fell in past conflicts and certainly oui fell in past conflicts and certainly our great grandfathers generation who fell in the great wark, its also really important that we remember those who still struggle on with issues from more recent conflicts great war. Ive served in afghanistan and i know a number of people are still struggling, and indeed families of neighbours of the armed forces who are struggling today and we are there to help people, whether they are children of serving personnel, all the way through two bedrooms. It is through life support in every area of society. There seems to be a great awareness now off society. There seems to be a great awareness now off if you like injuries that extend beyond the obvious and physical. Postsynaptic stress disorder and that kind of thing. Yes, i think thats really important and of course the prince has been doing a lot of good work on that. And our campaign this year is about rethinking remembrance and really reflecting on the fact that not all scars can be seen. How with the Remembrance Service changing . Obviously a lot of it is a as it has been for years and with the passage of time, fewer veterans from the world wars around, inevitably perhaps the focus of it and teaching a new generation around the importance of the changes . I think its really important that we do look to our younger audiences, oui we do look to our younger audiences, our younger generations, and make sure they do continue to pass the torch on. As john sure they do continue to pass the torch on. Asjohn mccrea asked us to do in his poem, flanders fields. Finally your reflections as you look ahead to the day, what for you is the most important moment . I think the most important moment has got to be the laying of the reefs at the cenotaph, thats the moment we all reflect and we have oui moment we all reflect and we have our chance to really think deep about what remembrance means to us les deux wreaths. And also who we re les deux wreaths. And also who were going to think about at that moment lee the wreaths. Were going to think about at that moment lee the wreaths. Alexander owen there. Ash lay the wreaths. Lee the wreaths. Lee the wreaths. David dimbleby and Sophie Raworth present coverage of the service on whitehall from 10 20am this morning. Brightening sky is but a biting, gusty, chilly wind. Showers outside at the moment, some rain around at whitehall, that will clear southwards pretty sharpish this morning allowing the sunshine to appear but showers following on particularly for wales and the midlands through the morning. At the cenotaph it will be a chilly story and the wind only really adding onto that cold feel. Heres the Bigger Picture across the country at 11am, isolated showers in the south west and a few further east but generally and a few further east but generally a drier story in the london region. Heavier showers in wales and maybe some hail mixed in. A few showers in Northern Ireland thinning out through the morning. In scotland, in ten showers coming in on the wind to the north and east, especially affecting the highlands and the grampians. Look at the arrows, that gives you an idea of the strength but the direction is key, coming down from the north, it will be a biting wind so even when we seymour sunshine in the west in the afternoon, feeling chilly. In the east, showers moving onshore into the likes of yorkshire, lincolnshire and east anglia see more showers. The wind will fall much lighter and overnight tonight a really chilly night. In rural areas with light winds and clear skies, temperatures in scotland as low as 6. On monday, a cold start, that goes without saying, a lot of sunshine on the way. A fine but chilly day in england and wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland will see rain and may snow across Higher Ground as the weather picture becomes more mobile peer through the second part of the day. That sets us up for whats going to happen as we go into the week. Mobile here. We lose the High Pressure that keeps things fine for the end of the weekend and we bring in weather fronts from the atla ntic bring in weather fronts from the atlantic so that will mean a cloudier story but my older for the week ahead. A chilly start on monday, sunshine for england and wales, getting milder into the middle of the week dash and wilder for the week ahead. Some rain at times.
