Borisjohnson good evening and welcome to bbc news. Boris johnson has overwhelmingly won the first round of votes to be the next conservative leader and the next Prime Minister. The former foreign secretary now seems almost certain to make it into the final two, after picking up the support of 114 of his conservative colleagues. Ten candidates were in the running. Boris johnson colleagues. Ten candidates were in the running. Borisjohnson was out in front followed byjeremy hunt and michael gove. Three candidates, andrea ledson, mark harper and esther mcvey, didnt get enough support and were eliminated from the race, leaving seven mps to face more votes next week. Laura kuenssberg reports. Who was it to be . Mps voted behind the gates of the commons. I shall be voting for boris. I will be voting for boris. Borisjohnson. The person who might be boris is boris himself. Get used to seeing this room where the Tory Committee announces results. Jeremy hunt, a3. And by a clear margin. Borisjohnson, 114. Murmurs of surprise at the numbers. Boris johnson way ahead, with 114 votes, almost certain to be in the final two. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt a clear second, only just ahead of michael gove. Ten votes behind, brexiteer dominic raab. The home secretary and Health Secretary both tucked in after him. A fifth member of the cabinet, rory stewart, just makes the cut, but three others are knocked out. Will you top the ballot today, mrjohnson . So the numbers proved. Borisjohnson, whose reputation has sunk and risen like the sun, really is the frontrunner in this frenzy. This is a very strong result for boris and i think it really shows how he has united our party, bringing people together from all different sections our party, both remain, leave, but also people with different ideas as well. With no other break out candidate, despite the smile, the contest now is not about catching up with mrjohnson but grabbing the other spot in the final two. Jeremys style is much more about trying to build consensus. He is tough in his negotiations, he is going to be with the european union, but he is also very clear that he will do it in a way that doesnt menace or threaten. Right now, none of the middle of the pack are giving up on the race. Morning even if they are huffing and puffing to keep up. We are going to succeed as a country. Whether former remainers in cabinet. And we have a dog called bailey that you might have seen recently on twitter. Or brexiteers who quit, they are all hoping to pick up votes from those who dropped out. We have a strong base and we are looking forward to the next rounds. This is round one, so we are off and running, and looking forward to building on that support, particularly given the way the votes fell. The outsider candidate who just made the cut says he believes anything could happen. Are you, at this moment, really in a position where you, rory stewart, can see yourself moving into number ten at the end ofjuly . Im much closer to it than i was four weeks ago, im closer than i was two weeks ago. We shall see. Politics can be a lonely old game. Those who lost out today put themselves on the line, but its the contest to be all of our Prime Minister, notjust some tory family business. I think its a fine result and lets see what happens on the next round. Have you spoken to your son . No, i havejust sent him something called a whatsapp, do you know about whatsapps . Havent heard of it, actually. No, it is a very modern thing. Theres a Long Distance to go, though. Plenty, plenty more chances still for missteps. The foreign secretaryjeremy hunt came second in todays ballot, getting 43 votes, and earlier this evening he gave his reaction to the result. Boris did well today, but what the result shows is that when it comes to the members stage im the one to take him on. The argument ill be making is a very simple one, that if you choose miele be the first Prime Minister who has a background as an entrepreneur, i can negotiate a deal with the european union, that is a better way forward than an approach which will make the crisis even worse and could lead to an election and Jeremy Corbyn in downing street. Will have more on this story in a few minutes, when well be speaking to two conservative mps, and later well find out how this story is covered in tomorrows front pages, at 10 1i0pm and ii 30 pm, our guests the guardian columnist and dawn foster and lucy fisher, defence correspondent at the times. In the past hour the United States has blamed iran for the attacks on two oil tankers in the gulf of oman, one of the wells busiest oil shipping routes. The us secretary of state mike pompeo said that assessment was based on intelligence and the kind of weapons used. The us has accused iran of carrying out similar attacks last month. News of the blasts sparked a rise in oil prices. James robbins reports. An Oil Tanker Ablaze in the gulf of oman this morning. Its owners say the fire was the result of an explosion as yet unexplained. The video was filmed by the iranian navy. Iran says its forces rescued all crewmembers from this norwegian owned tanker, and this second vessel, which was also hit by an explosion at much the same time. The United States with its carrier Abraham Lincoln in the area, already suspects iran of being behind todays events, and the damage to four tankers last month, but the iranians deny it, and suggest someone else is trying to provoke trouble. The rising tension is not in doubt. President trump tightened americas sanctions on iran in may, accusing the country of using its forces and arming others to destabilise the entire middle east. But its the immediate Economic Impact of today Cosmic Explosions which will worry much of the outside world. These tanker fires happened. They are close to the strait of hormuz which is vital to world trade and the significance of the stretch of water cant be exaggerated. On one side there are arab states including key us allies and on the other side is iran. At its narrowest point the strait is just 21 miles wide. There are two lanes for tankers to pass in opposite directions. A fifth of the wells oil exports, almost 19 Million Barrels of oil a day, have to move through here, so its a choke point. Attacks on tankers threatened oil supplies and drive up prices. But if the iranians were involved what might be the motive . They have highlighted that western states, the gulf states, cant protect shipping through that straight and therefore if there is a conflict they can inflict massive damage on the global economy. There is nothing we can do to stop that, even if ultimately we were to prevail in that engagement. And therefore what they do is they show that thats really not a credible option for us. This latest incident has already led to an increase in oil prices, something which could help iran as a major Oil Producing country, although it is suffering under intense sanctions. American Officials Say they will be able to recover enough debris from the attacks to trace their source. There is a warning that a link to iran could lead to american retaliation. James robbins, bbc news. Metropolitan police say they are assessing whether a comment by the comedianjo assessing whether a comment by the comedian jo brand, joking assessing whether a comment by the comedianjo brand, joking about throwing battery acid at politicians, amounts to an incitement to violence. The comedian made the remarks during a broadcast of radio fours satirical show heresy on tuesday night. Downing street suggested it should not have been broadcast. The bbc has responded to the strong reaction to the remark made byjo brand. In a statement to the bbc said. Im joined by our media and arts correspondent david sillitoe, lets backtrack a bit for people who are catching up with this. Where did it start . Heresy, bbc radio four comedy programme. Its all about airing provocative views in a comic fashion. They are wanting to have gasps and laughs at the same time. So that is the setting of this. Three comedians. They were discussing is brexit dividing the nation. Now, jo brand was actually arguing against the idea of throwing milkshakes as a form of protest over politicians, and then as an aside said, why bother with a milkshake when you can get some battery acid. There was a big laugh for the studio audience and she immediately qualified it saying, look, im not actually saying or condoning this, its just a fantasy, it was just a comic aside in her comic shtick about brexit. Now, the response, nigel farage said it was clearly aimed at him, he is furious. The Prime Minister is said to be wanting an explanation and the police are investigating. This evening the bbc has said all along, look, this is a comedy programme, they were not condoning violence and it had been checked before it went out. It was a pre recorded programme. But they have added tonight that following the strong reaction it will be cut, this particularjoke, from any further broadcasts, so when it goes out as a on bbc sounds or rebroadcast on radio four, and they regret any offence caused. Its a complicated mix of comedy, taste and decency, and what the law says. Absolutely. There are complaints every day of the week about jokes absolutely. There are complaints every day of the week aboutjokes on the bbc. They are always pushing the boundaries and many debates and discussions. It appears this is one of the shows that actually makes a virtue of saying we are going to be pushing the boundaries here of what you can talk about and challenging received opinion, but it appears that the idea of comments or even comic fantasies about violence against politicians is now pretty much one of those firm boundaries. David, thank you very much, david sillito. More on one of our main stories. In the past hour the United States has blamed iran for the attacks on two oil tankers in the gulf of oman, one of the wells busiest oil shipping routes. Our state Department CorrespondentBarbara Plett usherjoins us from washington. What has the secretary of state mike pompeo been saying . Well, hes been very clear that the United States has assessed that iran is responsible for this attack on these two oil tankers. Its only the United States saying this so definitively at the moment, but he said it was based on their intelligence, on the type of weapons used, the type of expertise needed, previous attacks carried out in the region, said all pointed very strongly to iran and he called these unprovoked attacks that were a threat to International Peace and security. You remember recently the americans said there had been iranians threats towards us interests and therefore they increased military deployment to the gulf, but mr pompeo did not talk about a military response to this. He talked about a diplomatic and economic one, lets hear what he had to say. Find bobbing today, ive instructed our un ambassador Jonathan Cohen to raise the attacks in the Un Security Council meeting later this afternoon, our policy remains an economic and diplomatic effort to bring iran back to the negotiating table, to encourage a comprehensive deal that addresses the broad range of threats, threats today apparent for all the world to see, to peace and security. Iran should meet diplomacy with diplomacy, not with terror, bloodshed and extortion. The vessels involved were not american registered, so why is mike pompeo getting involved in this . Because even though the vessels were not american registered, the conflict is between iran and the United States. The United States pulled out of this nuclear deal, the deal that limits Irans Nuclear programme, and re imposed sanctions on iran, saying it had to do much more to show the world and the us that it wasnt a threat and those sanctions are extremely crippling. So this is seen asa extremely crippling. So this is seen as a possible response from the iranians, that they are lashing out because of it. Something they have denied, but still, it is this tension between the us and iran and one of the things that iran could do to fight back against these sanctions is to attack in the strait of hormuz, the strategic channel next to the iranian coast where the Oil Shipments happen because these attacks have been happening there the american state clearly the iranians are to blame, so it would be against vessels that transmit through this area but it would be pa rt through this area but it would be part of this wider conflict, or this wide attention, between the United States and iran. It shows how easy it is to disrupt the flow of oil and how easy it is to increase oil prices, so thats something the americans have to be mindful of if they are going to continue this very ha rd they are going to continue this very hard line approach to trying to get iran to change its behaviour.
