But First Oil Prices are rising again after tensions in the gulf have escalated. Iran seized a british tanker in the straits of hormuz on friday, and libyas Largest Oil Field declared force majeure after interference by an Unidentified Group shut down production. 21 of all the worlds traded oil passes through the straits of hormuz it is a Critical Energy chokepoint. This morning, theresa may will chair the uk governments Emergency Committee cobra to discuss the next steps and security of shipping in the persian gulf. Irans Oil Exports Fell to less than 300,000 barrels a day last month according to reuters thats a big drop from the 2. 5 Million Barrels per day in april last year which is just before President Trump started reimposing sanctions as he pulled out of the nuclear deal. It removed about 2 of global supplies from the market. The benchmark brent crude has struggled to hold on the gains it made earlier this year despite the opec Producers Group extending its production cuts. It peaked around 75 a barrel at the end of april when President Trump ended us waviers that allowed some countries to continue importing iranian oil. Joining us now is nick coleman, whos the Senior Editor for oil news at S P Global Platts good morning. Give us your take on the situation we are in now. Its serious, isnt it . It is. The oil market so far, the prices are steadily rising because of the importance of the straits of hormuz and behind this are the sanctions imposed by the Us Government and interestingly, china is sort of obliging at the moment, its taking a rather small amount of oil from iran, its taking a little bit but really the chinese at the moment are being quite compliant with the sanctions so this puts huge pressure on iran, in the introduction we said rands experts have plummeted and it structured some of the tension. Its ha rd to structured some of the tension. Its hard to say what will happen next, well hear from the uk government later today in terms of its next steps but some are quite concerned it could lead to an escalation further, it could even lead to military action, there are others hoping for a diplomatic solution, that certainly a line of the foreign secretary, jeremy hunt. Your thoughts on what might happen next, i know its a tough question thoughts on what might happen next, i know its a tough question a lot depends on washington, doesnt it always 7 depends on washington, doesnt it always . Does President Trump really wa nt to always . Does President Trump really want to get involved in this region of the world . Thats a huge part of the equation. But ultimately, i come back to the sanctions, you know, if the pressure remains on iran or if things start to slip a little, if some countries start to take a bit of iranian crude and pressure comes off, very hard to predict. What do you think might happen to the oil price in the meantime . The reaction has been quite sanguine so far but that could change, couldnt it . The straits of hormuz as mentioned, 20 of the world s oil supply, ultimately if that shuts down anything can happen. There are some workarounds, some pipelines that come from saudi arabia that can avoid the straits of hormuz, thats avoid the straits of hormuz, thats a bit helpful. The other thing is, perhaps we can step back and look at the global oil market, the market is quite well supplied at the moment with oversupply in the first of this year, probably nearly a million a day of production more than was actually needed by the Global Market so actually needed by the Global Market so theres actually a lot of oil going into storage tanks around the world, american production, weve heard, the shale revolution, there isa heard, the shale revolution, there is a lot of non 0pec production still to come and rising to compensate for the oil in the middle east. We shall watch this space, thank you so much for coming in. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. Japans Prime Minister, shinzo abe, has claimed victory in the countrys upper house election. But exit polls suggest his coalition has fallen short of the two thirds so called super majority needed to push ahead with revising japans pacifist constitution. China says it will impose anti dumping duties on some stainless Steel Products imported from the european union, japan, south korea and indonesia. The first day of trading on chinas new science and Technology Market at the Shanghai Stock Exchange has been hailed a success. Shares soared by as much as 520 per cent, leaving chinas other stocks markets in the shade. Monica miller is in our asia hub for us in singapore. It sounds like a very good start, doesnt it . Tell us more. It certainly does, the so called star market is stealing the spotlight today, other indices in the red, a stellar debut in shanghai, 25 chinese tech and Science Companies began trading and all have seen increases in stocks of more than 100 . However there is one company in particular that has seen stocks boost 520 and that is the solar sun modular maker and its extraordinary when you think about that. This marks a significant step in the country s to bid open up the economy and markets, investors taking full advantage over the next five days of a limit on the share price movements just to get five days of a limit on the share price movementsjust to get people up price movementsjust to get people up and running get people interested in this. This started back in november when the chinese president opened up this market and the idea is to increase development in domestic tech companies. This comes at an interesting time for china as it is in the midst of a trade war with the United States and they are dry to compete with the nasdaq and Domestic Companies in the us which has taken on a interest in the president who is dry to curb them before they grow bigger. Moniker, thank you as always. Its a good job it did well on its debut with a name like a star market. Monica keeping across all of that. And whirlpool is expected to report higher Second Quarter earnings. The us Home Appliance maker is credited with cutting costs and successfully raising its prices to try to offset higher steel and aluminium costs. Thats michelle, based in new york. Simon french, chief economist for Panmure Gordon joins us now. A busy week, weve heard from michelle, give us your take on the corporate stories. On corporate results, theres two things to look out for, first of all, most of the annual comparisons for companies will be quite difficult because Global Growth was going really strongly at the start of 2018 and up against difficult scenarios will give usa against difficult scenarios will give us a bellwether sense further Global Growth slowdown has translated to topline growth, thats the first thing but the second thing, we get quite a lot of Technology Firm announcements and the ongoing trade frictions between the ongoing trade frictions between the us and china has very much hit the us and china has very much hit the enthusiasm protect stocks, maybe not in china but over in the us and europe. Will you start to see some of the growth that is predicated on the emerging markets continuing theirdemand the emerging markets continuing their demand for technology started to be pared back and investors using their enthusiasm . A big week as weve touched on politically in the uk. We will see that in stirling, what are you expecting . uk. We will see that in stirling, what are you expecting . If Boris Johnson is confirmed as the new uk Prime Minister then it will be what he appoints as his top team, crucially in the treasury in terms of the finance ministry here in the uk, the chancellor, will that be a confidence appointment, someone at the market understands, which i think will be quite positive for sterling given its oversold nature . 0r sterling given its oversold nature . Or will he go for a left field candidate, some of the doubts regarding that appointment but also, looking forward a little, there is the vacancy at the bank of england thatis the vacancy at the bank of england that is a Prime Ministerial appointment. Mark carney the current incumbent leaves in january next year, thats key for the stirling trajectory because confidence in that appointment central. Everyone keeping half an eye on the central bank and well hear from the European Central bank on thursday, i know we are looking ahead but some are expecting to give guidance on the fact they may reduce rates Going Forward . The fact they may reduce rates Going Forward . Thats right, a lot of speakers from the Ecb Governing Council indicating we will get further easing, potentially a cut to the deposit rating two minus. 5, restarting quantitative easing, i dont think well get that policy announcement this month, but certainly guidance for markets to expect further stimulus. Carolyn fairbairn, the cbis director generaljoined us earlier to tell us what she thinks the new leader of the conservative party needs to focus on. Today the cbi is publishing a business manifesto for the next Prime Minister. Its all about getting our economy back on track because brexit has taken its toll. So were talking about the huge importance of rebuilding confidence in the Investment Community in our economy so recommitting to the big Infrastructure Projects like hs2 and heathrow, ensuring our immigration system is really welcoming to the talent we need for our country and looking again at some of the policies that really are not working for business like the apprenticeship levy and also business rates. And we need a long term vision for our country which is about skills building, its about innovation. If we get these things right, we can move beyond brexit with confidence. Of course, all predicated on getting a deal, thats the other big ask for business, but this is a manifesto that we think can help put the uk back on the map in terms of our economy.
