And with less than ten minutes to go, winger Cheslin Kolbe outstepped the english and scored another try, giving the spring boks the path to victory. The team has made history. Siya kolisi is the first black man to captain the springboks and to lift the web ellis cup. And his side is first to win both the rugby championships and the Rugby World Cup in the same year. Millions of rugby fans were watching around the world. Rupert Wingfield Hayes reports from yokohama. As the final whistle blew in yokohama, half a world away in johannesburg, the streets erupted in celebration. The people of the rainbow nation dancing and singing together. For South African fans who had made the long trip to japan, it was also a moment of pure ecstasy. How does it feel . Amazing did you come herejust for this . Yes we love it and we love the people also. Amazing huge disappointment here for england tonight but what a night for south africa and what a night forjapan which has hosted this amazing world cup and now has thousands of new rugby fans. These young japanese fans looked almost as excited as their new South African friends. Before the world cup, they told me they had never watched a rugby match. Why do you like south africa . Because they have an amazing team, that is why we love them. In yokohama and back in england, the faces of the fans said it all. The nations rugby team had come so close, even defeating the all blacks but today they were systematically beaten. From the start we didnt look like we were going to win it. I am absolutely gutted. South africa played really well. I was disappointed that england didnt win. But tonight has been a huge victory for rugby. The japanese people have welcomed rugby with open arms, many new friendships and new rugby fans made. The springboks triumph was met with huge celebrations ina in a moment we will be speaking to Nelson Mandelas grandson. So speaking to Nelson Mandelas grandson here, on bbc news, really looking forward to that. The springboks triumph was met with huge celebrations back in south africa. When the country won the Rugby World Cup for the first time in 1995, they only had one black player in the team. Today, all the rainbow nation are sharing in the victory, as Andrew Harding reports from johannesburg. Its always good to win. Back home in south africa today, ecstatic celebrations nationwide. But theres more to this rapture than just rugby, the sport was once monopolised by the white minority here, but not any more. Congratulations to the springboks and thank you for bringing it back home. Hard luck, england. You tried. Sorry. We are over the moon, what a game, this is the biggest world cup in the world, and this is the sport that unites us as South Africans. And then a message home from a victorious team. Thank you so much, south africa. This is what we can do as a team when we decide on one goal, so thank you very much. Cheering here in south africa, kolisi has become an iconic figure, the springboks first black captain, a symbol of hope and progress. For years the news from south africa has been relentlessly bad, corruption, inequality, a country losing its way. Does today change that . Of course not, but the victory is a reminder of the Bigger Picture of how much has changed here since the days of racial apartheid. This is, after all, a vibrant, young democracy, with a world beating rugby team. Andrew harding, bbc news, johannesburg. Well in 1995, Nelson Mandela was there to present the trophy to captain Francois Pienaar after he lead the springboks first world cup win. It was an historic moment for the nation just a year after the end of apartheid. Today, 2a years later, siya kolisi, the sprinboks first ever black captain was the man to lift the trophy in another landmark moment for rainbow nation. And watching from new york was Nelson Mandelas grandson, ndaba mandela, and hejoins me now. Thank you very much for speaking to us thank you very much for speaking to us here at bbc news. You know what . The number six, kolisi, the first black man to captain the springboks, your grandfather came a huge significance there. How did you feel when he first saw him carrying the weight of history there on his back . Imean, weight of history there on his back . I mean, that was an absolutely proud moment for me. You know, to see a black man really being able to achieve his dreams, because you know, you can imagine, looking at oui know, you can imagine, looking at our history but there are many young people who feel they dont belong and dont feel welcome and that sports, and that we have a captain who has let us to our third victory of the world cup. Ndaba said that sports can unite a nation, and today we heard kolisi talk about, you know, this is what we can achieve if we put our minds together and we work together. Thats a huge burden for a sport to take on, isnt it . Well, i mean, it is a burden, but if you look at the world that we are living in, there are only two things that can really unite people, and that can really unite people, and that sports and music. So it is a role that sports must play, you know, to carry out the next generation to give them hope to allow them to dream and to make sure that young people in to the neck understand that they are the masters of their universe. This is a huge sort of world that sports plays, and thats why sports are so important in society. You know, going back, we have seen so in society. You know, going back, we have seen so many in society. You know, going back, we have seen so many pictures today, and many of the young today will not understand the significance of that shot of your grandfather with friends while pr put next to the picture of kolisi lifting that trophy. You know, because back in those days, South Africans, black South Africans would support any tea m South Africans would support any team apart from the springboks, because there was no love for rugby. Just explain to us how thatjourney has transformed from when your grandfather donned the number six. Well, you know, my grandfather was very instrumental in making sure that black people supported sports. They didnt support the sports because it was monopolized by white people, and white people did not actually welcome any black players to partake on the team. And since my grandfathers leadership, he actually went against the grain, right . Led the government to make sure that they supported the team. And since then, you know, we have had a lot of fights within the rugby union. But its all been leading up to this moment. So you see, its another show to the world to say that you can actually believe in your dreams. You can actually work together, different races, different people, coming together. You know, if they, like our captain said, work together, they can make anything happen. You are very close to mediaeval, you are certainly with him in the final years of his life. Did he other reflect on that moment . Well, not really, but i think its a moment that he was very proud of. Of course, he was the first black president , and he was supporting a springboks that had not fully welcomed the new rainbow nation. So i think he is a man that since today looks upon us very proudly, smiling, that the dream of the rainbow nation is possible, it just that the dream of the rainbow nation is possible, itjust needs us to work at it. You know, 24 years on, south africa still is a very fractured nation, perhaps its unfairto fractured nation, perhaps its unfair to assume that it would transform overnight, what sort of work is being done to bring the nation together . What sort of work do you do . Well, i have been running this operation are for the past nine yea rs, this operation are for the past nine years, and its all about empowering young people in the rural areas of south africa. We have education, technology, and cultural programmes, and also career guidance. We work with the people who are the most marginalised and the poorest to give an opportunity to learn about computers, technology, agriculture, and guide them as far as their careers are concerned. You can imagine young people growing up on farm areas dont believe they can become a vet or a pilot or a scientist, you know, natural scientist, you know, natural scientist for that matter. So its really important work that we do in south africa. Yes, 25 years is not really a long time, thats only one generation concerned with the fact that we have been enslaved and apartheid for almost 100 years. 0k, what sort of reaction was there when kolisi was named as captain . believe most of the black people are very proud and happy, and i dont think, not all the way people are happy, but you know, given this victory, i think everybody is on the same page today. 0k, victory, i think everybody is on the same page today. Ok, so how do you think we can take south africas victory, the springboks victory today, and use it . What we can do is today, and use it . What we can do is to show young people, and people in general, notjust to show young people, and people in general, not just young to show young people, and people in general, notjust young people, that actually, you know, when you are black, whether you are white, it doesnt matter. We all have wea knesses doesnt matter. We all have weaknesses we all have strengths, but if we come together, we can eliminate our weaknesses and really make sure that our strengths go to the next level. This demonstrates that the rainbow nation is alive, and its real, and it can become even better. 0k, and its real, and it can become even better. Ok, lets leave the politics to one side. Ndaba, urinalysis, lets finish up on your analysis of the match. Because thats what people are really excited about. I mean to him its a great comeback, considering they lost in the pool stages. What did you think of todays match . Todays match was absolutely fantastic. I thought our defence was on point. The first half was quite close, it was really more of a kicking contest. At the second half we came out you know, and i wasjust contest. At the second half we came out you know, and i was just really amazed. At first try, they really set it up for the last try, number 14, coming in there and just killing its you know . Ceiling that victory. Imean it its you know . Ceiling that victory. I mean it was really a proud day. Because to consider our matches before that didnt play that well, and for us to be able to rise to the occasion and the final was really a volcanic eruption today. I was really amazed. 0k, volcanic eruption today. I was really amazed. Ok, you know what, its been a lot of fun talking to you. Ndaba, im surprised you are not having a bright out in the garden. Thank you very much. You might it thank you, thank you. Thank you. That wasnt ndaba mandela, grandson of the great medica, speaking to us following the springboks victory in japan. Speaking to us following the springboks victory injapan. 0k, well coming up next, you are watching bbc news. Coming up next, we are going to look through our main headlines, and plenty more as well. But until then, main headlines, and plenty more as well. But untilthen, lets main headlines, and plenty more as well. But until then, lets move on to other news. We have a little bit more on the news that the government has announced that it is suspending fracking in england for the foreseeable future. The ban comes after a Technical Report said it was not possible to predict the probability or seriousness of earth tremors caused by extracting shale gas from the ground. Labour, the liberal democrats and the green party have all called for a permanent ban. Our Business Correspondent Katie Prescott reports. Its farewell to fracking, for now. These campaigners in lancashire couldnt be happier to see the back of it. Were delighted about it, its what weve been hoping for all the time. We dont trust them, of course. They could change their mind yet. Its good news, obviously. Its good news for the whole country, but in particular here, where people have put up with this for the best part of three years now. All this stuff going on for no apparent gain. So, three years, all that money pumped in, all that effort, and theyve produced next to nothing. The process of extracting shale gas is one of the most controversial of our time. Using pressurised water and chemicals to break up rock causes minor earthquakes. Today, the oil and gas regulator says the impact on these communities is unacceptable, which Means Companies must stop the operations. In the past borisjohnson has called fracking glorious news for humanity. But the government says it has changed its mind. There is no doubt that extracting more natural gas in the United Kingdom would be very attractive but weve always been clear, we can only do that if it can be done safely. We will follow the science, so in future, should the ability to be certain about seismic events and so on, we will look at it again. The government had hoped sites like these would transform our energy policy. Creating home grown sources of power that would reduce our gas imports. Frackings industry body says. But the green party says fracking is a fantasy and want to see a permanent ban. Labour say they fear the governments stance could be an election ploy. I think it sounds like fracking would come back on the 13th of december if they were elected back into office. We are quite clear, we will end fracking. The big question now is whether the industry will be willing to invest any more money here, in the hope that the science will one day find in their favour in the regulation could change. Katie prescott, bbc news. And well find out how this story, and many others, are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 30pm and 11 30pm this evening in the papers. Our guestsjoining me tonight are martin lipton, whos chief Sports Reporter at the sun, and bonnie greer, playwright, author and columnist for the new european newspaper. The headlines on bbc news. The time is 17 minutes past seven from lets remind ourselves of the headlines. South africa have won the Rugby World Cup final after convincingly beating england 32 12 at yokohama injapan. The government halts fracking for gas in england until there is evidence the controversial process is safe. High winds and rain sweep southern england and wales, with one woman killed after her car was struck by a falling tree in dorset. Well, whilst celebrations are still going on in south africa. England fans are wondering what went wrong for the team. Here to give us his insight is huw richards former welsh rugby player. Thank you forjoining us on bbc news. So what went wrong . Actually something went slightly wrong there, im nota something went slightly wrong there, im not a former welsh rugby player, hes my namesake. Otherwise, i dont think its a question so much of what went wrong, its what went right in south africa. South africa did everything you could hope of on the team. England who played brilliantly last week, essentially, we re brilliantly last week, essentially, were unable to break out what happened. Do you think they were also slightly overwhelmed by expectations going out onto that field . I wouldnt have thought so, i think, its always easier when youre side has lost to look for what went wrong. I think it was a lwa ys what went wrong. I think it was always known that south africa were going to be a very tough team to play against. We saw what they did against wales last week, when of course they had been in a longer struggle to win, but you can see what they were capable of. So i dont think theres any sense of englands you know, choking or anything like that, its a possible argument that they played their absolute best last week, and of course, its worth remembering, england orfor the course, its worth remembering, england or for the last two weekends have beaten australia and new zealand, which is an extraordinary achievement. To overcome that and beat south africa as well is sort of a triple crown, it wouldve been an extraordinary achievement. Yes, a lot of people saying that the final really took place in the match between new zealand. Very quickly before we leave you, wales, how do you think they did the tournament . actually thought wales might win the world cup, they have won nine world cup some is the first time ever, it was the first time they had gone to the semi final comment i thought they really might be on their way through. In the end, what they couldnt do was cope with some of the power and focus of the South Africans, but thats of course the story of the world cup as a whole this time around. Either way, however when, it has been a great tournament. Thank you very much indeed. Thank you. Bbc news, its 20 minutes past seven now. A woman in her 60s has been killed after her car was struck by a falling tree in dorset. High winds of up to 100 miles an hour and heavy rain have brought down trees onto roads and railway lines. The bad weather has battered large parts of southern england and wales. Meanwhile, plymouth argyles home game against grimsby town, in league two, had to be called off after a section of roofing in the stands was damaged. Scott bingham reports now on how the south west has been affected by the stormy weather. The damage to the barn park end at home park may not look too serious, but the weather conditions meant workers were unable to get onto the roof of the stand to make it safe. Sojust after midday, the club said it had no alternative but to postpone the match against grimsby. Weve looked to see whether or not we could repair it, because obviously, we know there are thousands of people come into the game today, but with the wind speeds that weve got, we legally cannot go up and work from those heights to fix it. So its absolutely with a heavy heart, but weve had to take the decision to postpone todays game. Across the southwest, the high winds brought down dozens of trees, drivers were forced to find alternative routes in cornwall. Whilst one side of brixham road remained open. Heavy rainfall saw river levels rising here at staverton in the south hams. And there was some minor flooding on the main road to totness. Offshore, the plymouth life but was called out to a number of vessels requesting assistance in the challenging conditions. This yacht was towed to safety near millbrook creek. The winds are set to die down overnight, although yellow weather warnings for rain will remain in place until midnight. Scott bingham, bbc news. Scotlands first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has said the general election is a crossroads moment for scotland. Addressing a rally in glasgow, ms sturgeon said independence was within touching distance. The snp leader repeated her plan to hold a referendum next year, and urged scots to use the election to put scotlands future in scotlands hands. Lets get more of the weekend politics. Joining me as knitterrdly, 01 politics. Joining me as knitterrdly, ora politics. Joining me as knitterrdly, or a political correspondent. Ok, lets start our first with what ms. Sturgeon had to say it, talk us through that. You will make the s p are going to put the heart of the campaign it may not sound surprising, but it is. Because in 2017 they did the exact opposite, they tried to played on the independence. But Nicola Sturgeon has been perfectly clear that she is going to use this election to try and force the uk government to allow another independent referendum. Under the arrangement that happened the last time in 2014, you ask for the power from westminster it grants a committee hold another one. She wa nts committee hold another one. She wants that to happen again, and she was appearing at this Pro Independence rally in glasgow today, making exactly that argument. A listen. A much better alternative for our country is to take our future into our hands. And to become an independent country. A country that invests in our people, that invests in our public services, that invests in lifting children out of poverty, not in a hard brexit, not in trident weapons of mass destruction on the river clyde. An independent country that is open, that is welcoming, that is diverse, that can build a Better Future. Not just for us here today and this generation of scouts, but a Better Future for all the generations who come after us. That, my friends, is the price. That, my friends, is the prize. And that prize is within our touching distance. But we must seize that prize. I said a moment ago that this general election is the most important in our lifetimes, and that is the case. 0k, ok, sojust to get ok, so just to get this straight, the case is, whoever wins, she is going to try, the s p are going to try for the second referendum, is that rates . Yes, absolutely. Whether its Boris Johnson orjeremy that rates . Yes, absolutely. Whether its borisjohnson orjeremy corbyn, Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold that referendum, and she wants to hold it next year. Ive got to say, its ha rd to next year. Ive got to say, its hard to see how that might happen, because the conservatives have made it pretty clear they are going to say no. Labour have been considerably more ambiguous on the issue, and said they wouldnt block an independence referendum, but they also wouldnt allow it within the formative years of a labour government, that basically means the first two years. So although ms. Sturgeon is putting that front and centre, there is still that hurdle, that even if the s p one the election in scotland, uk parties may well say no. 0k, next, we have a formal complaint being put to itv. Concerning the debate, the Leaders Debate. Just give us a background to that. So, i to debate. Just give us a background to that. So, ito be have said they are going to hold a Leaders Debate on the 19th of november with two people, borisjohnson the 19th of november with two people, Boris Johnson and jeremy corbyn. Now, this follows a bit of a formula when it comes to tv debates, those that arent included get extremely angry about it. The lib dems and the s p have both well, look, we are fairly Major Players in parliament, we should have a voice. Lib dems have made unofficial complaint now, and they are making pretty clear that they are going to fight this. A official complaint. What we dont know is whether this debate they are holding is part of a wider roster of events that are going to be taking place, for example, we know in the past, the bbc and sky have held debates, and they have looked slightly different. Soi they have looked slightly different. So i wouldnt relent the prospect that that there would be a tv debate that that there would be a tv debate that involves joe that that there would be a tv debate that involvesjoe swenson and potentially Nicola Sturgeon as well, but at the moment, lib dems are externally unhappy they are not in that itv devote. Some people may be happy with this moratorium on fracking, this is a huge discussion this weekend. Many are saying its just a case of electioneering. Its really interesting timing, isnt it . The government basically making this announcement on the eve of the general election campaign. Its really important to just point out exactly what theyve said. Theyve said that they will not allow fracking until the science proves that its ok. The argument that the opposition parties have been making today is theyjust arent convinced that this is going to last long. Jeremy corbyn was out this morning saying he thinks that it raises the prospect that fracking will basically start again on the 13th of december, lib dems making a similar point that they want to see a permanent down on fracking. I should just point out that fracking is already banned in scotland and wales, and there is a presumption against it in northern ireland, so this is england only. Of the opposition parties arent all that this announcement is going to last a. 0k, nick, thank you very much, thank you. Do you know what, lets get a bit more rugby. Our correspondent Chi Chi Izundu has spent the day at harpenden rugby club, watching the game with england fans. The harpenden rugby club, once upon a time base to train some of those playing in todays match. The clubhouse feeling every twist and turn of the match, but a muted round of applause at the results. Four out of the 31 england players have honed their skills here at this rugby club, including captain owen farrell, but, the fans here have packed it out, hoping that todays match would end and celebration. It hasnt. Nonetheless, they have nothing but pride for englands efforts. I thought we played really well, they were a really hard team. Yeah, we were really disappointed all around. We lost some of the big moments. They overpowered us a bit. They let us play our normal game, it was a fantastic turnout for the club. We had big expectations, and it just didnt work our way today, unfortunately. George tutt has been part of this club for 34 years, born in south africa, he says that the win will Impact Communities there. It will do wonders over in south africa. Actually, even pre match, if you saw all the dancing and the shopping malls all of the fun that they have had over there, well, youve got to give it to them. Theyve got the enthusiasm, and they have got the nation behind them, and they won. And even with a loss, these young men who went to school with some of the england players say pride is all they are feeling now. We are mostly proud. This is such a big rugby school, so every part of the school is all about rugby, really. The kids around here, they really see, you know, the players, they see those players and they think, you know, what can i be in ten years time . Regardless, celebrations for the players from this club. Singing. Lets catch up with the weather, nick miller has that. Nick, that may bea nick miller has that. Nick, that may be a coastal shots, that actually looks like my lane at home. Rates, yes, you are absolutely right some youve called it right, it has been just some youve called it right, it has beenjust a some youve called it right, it has been just a miserable saturday across some parts of the uk, of course, the rain, but those horrible winds that weve had, we have had some particularly nasty weather conditions. It is still very blustery out there for some of us. Southern england in particular towards south wales, and into northern scotland as well, its been very windy there today. At the worst of the winds are behind us, but again, its still very blustery out there, still gusts up to 50 mph or so. There, still gusts up to 50 mph or so. Through the night, still some areas of wet weather, looking very wet for some of into eastern parts of scotland, temperatures around 59dc. Not of scotland, temperatures around 5 9dc. Not wet
