Camps in western china are used to brainwash the muslim uighur minority. The billionaire former mayor of new york Michael Bloomberg announces he wants to run for us president as a democrat. Good morning. It is 1 00am in london, 8 00pm in new york and 9 00am it is 1 00am in london, here in hong kong, where the pro democracy parties are on course for an overwhelming landslide victory in local elections. With about half the vote counted, the pro democracy camps have won seven seats for every one held by parties backing the government. These are only local District Council elections, but this is a huge vote of support for the protest movement, after almost six months of often violent demonstrations that have brought this city to a standstill. Rupert Wingfield Hayes reports. In the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island this morning, the queue to vote at the shau kei wan polling station went on and on and on. Were seeing queues like this in districts all over hong kong today, people waiting for an hour, even up to 1. 5 hours to vote. And people are telling us they have never seen anything like this in a local election in hong kong before. Translation we didnt have to line up before. Everyone is more enthusiastic. They really want to contribute to the society. Speaks in cantonese. The passion of those standing for election today is out of all proportion to the power of the local Council Seats being contested. But, for the opposition, today is a referendum on the protests that have rocked hong kong for the last six months. David and his mother, anne, are on opposite sides of that fight. We can see just old people, pro government, pro regime, they control the power, they control the parties, they control everything, even the economy. So we can take back the control and start to have more strength and power in there. As counting got under way tonight, the turnout for todays election had topped 7i . That is the highest turnout ever recorded in any Hong Kong Election. The early signs are also that the pro democratic camp is heading for a sweeping victory. Well, you can hear all the excitement here, and that is because a 23 year old democracy activist has just unseated a pro government incumbent who has held this seat for the last 20 years. Scenes like these are being repeated across hong kong tonight the new, very young faces of hong kong politics. The question now is, will any of these victories have an impact on the hong kong government, or on beijing . We will be back in hong kong shortly. But first, lets take a look at some of the days other news the billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg has officially announced he is running for president of the united states. In a statement, the former mayor of new york city said he was standing in the 2020 election to defeat donald trump and rebuild america. Mr bloomberg joins i7 other candidates vying for the democratic nomination. Chris buckler has more. At the heart of this is a suggestion from Michael Bloomberg that he doesnt believe that the democrats who are currently standing have a chance of beating donald trump. He thinks there is a danger that they could be another four years of President Trump in the white house. And if you take a look at his advert campaign, it is very clear that he doesnt want that to happen, describing it as a risk and even a menace at certain points. And certainly it feels like it is getting somewhat personal between the president and Michael Bloomberg. Imean, if the president and Michael Bloomberg. I mean, if you take a look at some of the campaign literature, he says that donald trump is a failed businessman whose Companies Went bankrupt, and whose reckless actions in office have harmed americans and weakened our country. Make no mistake, if he is lining up for a battle of the billionaires, i suspect President Trump will come out fighting as well. He has said in the past that there is nobody he would rather beat than who he describes as little michael. Also making news today the philippines president , rodrigo duterte, has fired his Vice President from her position as head of Anti Narcotics policy. Leni robredo was sacked less than three weeks after being appointed. She was a frequent critic of mr duterte, and has accused the government of allowing the killing of innocent people in its war on drugs. Saudi Arabias Al Hilal have won the Asian Champions League for a third time after beating japans Urawa Red Diamonds 2 0 on sunday. Salem al dawsari scored the first goaljust 16 minutes from full time, before the win was sealed in injury time. Lets return to our top story here in hong kong, where pro democracy parties have thrashed pro establishment counsellors in local elections. Councillors. With me now is Legislative Council member paul tse, who also sits on the wan chai District Council. You have retained your seat on the pro establishment side. What do you make of these elections . Certainly it isa make of these elections . Certainly it is a big lesson for all concerned, for the government as well, and hopefully people. Bashing the stations and petrol bombing everywhere. I think there is a Silver Lining behind this. For the government and for the coming elections in the legco, it will be a nightmare. As i said, obviously a huge thrashing. How do you think carrie lam, the chief executive, is feeling this morning . carrie lam, the chief executive, is feeling this morning . I dont know, i havent seen her speaking yet. But certainly i think she should take it very seriously. Unfortunately it is not for her to be making decisions, political or otherwise, so we just have to deal with it. I mean, the quy have to deal with it. I mean, the guy is still here, the sun is still here, but certainly hong kong has changed quite a bit. Thats right, its a bit of a morning here, but a really dark day for the party that you represent. So to some extent, you represent. So to some extent, you are a moderate, as you say, but nonetheless, this really means that the protest side seems to have one, despite having caused, many say, a lot of chaos to hong kong, and caused the country, the city, to go into recession. Well, like they say, the people have spoken clout light quite loudly, this time, as well. Soberly the government will take very seriously, learn the lesson plans are doing which really answers all these angry calls from the people. And certainly we dont. I dont know whether we have enough time to improve, but the polling box will be opening in a few months time for legco if we dont do everything quickly enough, and i think a bigger lesson will be around the corner. Thats right, as you say, it will be a big lesson around the corner. What does this all mean, though, for hong kong . It is a special Administrative Region of china. Of course, as you say, carrie lam cant stand down even if you wa nted lam cant stand down even if you wanted to, because she is beholden to the chinese leadership. So what happens next in terms of how beijing deals with this city . Well, it remains to be seen what beijing will react to this. Certainly they wont like the result, but unfortunately thatis like the result, but unfortunately that is the way it is. And certainly we have these trade deals going on around the corner. So perhaps beijing will be watching very keen eyes to see happens between the us and negotiators before they take any other moves. To a great extent, hong kongers have spoken. They turned up in record numbers at this ballot box. They are local District Council elections, nonetheless, so really the lowest rung of government. So in terms of making a difference, though, this is really a symbolic message, isnt it . Well, yes and no. Imean, the message, isnt it . Well, yes and no. I mean, the District Council has come out with resources, financially, so that will help to put them on a very Good Platform for next yea rs put them on a very Good Platform for next years legco election. And at the same time he probably know that in hong kong the elections of the chief executive, if not also the legco, will depend very much on District Council constituencies, as well. If we have large numbers, if well. If we have large numbers, if we have control of the District Council, chances are they will have a large say in the elections of the chief executive, which is something which beijing, i think, will be taking very, very seriously. And what do you have to say to the protest movement, to those protesters, who have disrupted the city for the last almost six months . Have they won . Well, now that you have ventilated your frustration and angen have ventilated your frustration and anger, please stop bashing our stations, please go back to normal life. And that is a good way to end it on. Thank you so much. Congratulations again for retaining your seat. 0ne congratulations again for retaining your seat. One of the few pro establishment candidates to retain his seat. And of course, we will be bringing you all the latest local District Council Election Results as they come in. Theres what we call vocational educational and training centres. They are there for the prevention of a terrorist. With respect sir, what youre telling me bears no relation to what i have seen. The so called document you have seen is so called fabrications. Dont listen to fake news. Dont listen to fabrications. The documents are not fake news. They are evidence of crimes against humanity. Hong kongers wake up. With me is one of the winds from the elections. Lo kin hei is vice chairman of the democratic party, who tonight was re elected as councillor for the Southern District for lei tung ii constituency. First off, congratulations on being elected. Thank you very much. 0bviously elected. Thank you very much. Obviously it has been an extraordinary result for the pro democracy camp, which you are securely. What do you make of these results, first off . Of course we are surprised the result, we are surprised the result, we are surprised with the turnout yesterday, because we know a lot of hong kong people, theyjust cue up early in the morning, they dont mind queueing for one or two hours to actually vote. This is the greatest turnout in Hong Kong Election history. I think we appreciate hong kong peoples effort in getting to the ballot box, but of course we know that this result comes from a lot of suffering, a lot of sacrifice from a lot of people in the past half a year. So we are, on the past half a year. So we are, on the one hand, happy with the result. 0n the other hand, we are sad that we need that result so dearly now. Thats right. Really fascinating about hong kongers, as you say, turned up in record numbers, more than for any election in the citys history. They spoke out the ballot box, but we know they have also been speaking for the past six months on the streets, a street battles continue. Now, you were arrested for writing just last week. We are waiting for the governments to respond to our demands, and to respond to the current hong kong situation. How do you expect that response to be . We have not hea
