A haze over sydney as a mega bushfire forms near the city and about 100 otherfires are raging in the australian state of new south wales. In a few hours, forbes will reveal its latest annual rankings for the worlds best paid musicians, but is it streaming, merchanise or touring that make them their money . Weve had black friday and cyber monday. Now, get ready for Small Business saturday. Does that sound a little more worthwhile . Well speak to the woman whos urging us to shop small this christmas. And you can be part of the conversation too. Everyone seems to be sharing their most listened songs of the past year right now. What was top of your list . Let us know just use the hashtag bbcworklife. Hello and welcome to worklife. We start with the ride hailing firm uber. The frim says it received 3,000 reports of Sexual Assaults related to its trips in the United States in 2018, out of roughly 1. 3 billion rides. Uber is under pressure from regulators in many cities over safety and security. So it now releases an annual safety report. It says 99. 9 of all of its 2. 3 billion us trips in 2017 and 2018 ended without any safety incidents. Lets get more from our business correspondent, theo leggett. The 99 point 7 sounds pretty good but it is an issue that has plagued uber above all 99 point something. It has led to problems in the past and the company has been accused of failing to respond adequately to reports of Sexual Harassment and things like that and not taking action, trying to keep things private, forcing people into arbitration and generally not recognising what was going on. This report commissioned by ubers chief executive is an attempt to reverse that, to show they are transparent. The headline figure of around 6000 serious Sexual Assaults sounds pretty bad but when you put it into the context of the sheer number of rides being taken by uber passengers every year, it is pretty small, but you have to remember serious Sexual Assaults are crimes frequently underreported and uber itself admits in the report it may not be giving the entire picture. Because people do not report these kinds of things, the actual total may be higher. Do not report these kinds of things, the actual total may be higherli supposed the actual total may be higher. supposed to get the full picture, we need figures like this from all the different organisations involved in ferrying people around. Absolutely. Notjust ferrying people around. Absolutely. Not just the ferrying people around. Absolutely. Notjust the people involved in ferrying them around, when serious Sexual Assaults are reported, you need to get the reports from the people. But the victims are in many cases not willing to report them, it isa cases not willing to report them, it is a fundamental problem, but it is not ubers problem. Also, people tend to think of it as an issue with uber drivers and their attitudes to passengers. This report shows ors drivers were on the receiving end of the reported on half of the reported assaults. Uber drivers are vulnerable as well as passengers. Good point. Thank you. Lets take a look at some of the other stories making the news. China says that it will waive imports tariffs for some us soybeans and pork, according to the countrys finance ministry. It said the waivers will be based on applications by individual us soybeans and pork companies. The ministry did not specify the exact quantities of the imported products on which the relevant waivers will be applied. A us labour group has filed a federal charge against google, accusing the company of unlawfully firing four employees to deter workers from engaging in union activities. The internet giant has said the employees were let go for violating the compa nys Data Security policies. The Communications Workers of america union, which represents 700,000 north americans working in several other industries, has been trying to organise workers at google. State owned oil giant saudi aramco has raised a record 25. 6 billion in its initial Public Offering in riyadh. The share sale was the biggest ever, beating Chinas Alibaba which raised 25 billion in 2014 in new york. This will value aramco at 1. 7 trillion when trading in the shares begins next week, making it by far the most valuable listed company in the world. But aramco had to rely on domestic and regional investors to buy shares after lukewarm interest from abroad. Still a lot of money in oil. If that is the lukewarm response. A lot of money in music too. It is arguably the most ubiqitous artform there is. Its absolutely everywhere whether its on your ear buds, Smart Speaker or video streaming channel. That means the artists at the top of the industry, like u2, jay z and taylor swift can amass huge fortunes. Last year the recorded Music Industry was worth more than 19 billion. Forbes will shortly unveil this years list of the richest recording stars but how do they make their money . Is it streaming, franchising their brand or constant touring . Lets find out. With us is now helienne lindvall, chair of the ivor novello awards committee. A songwriter in your own right. Thank you forjoining us. What is going to come top of the list . How they make their money . Musicians largely make their money from touring and merchandise, i would say. Streaming is very much winner ta kes all say. Streaming is very much winner takes all and yet also it is spread out over a long period. What does that mean, winner takes all . If you are big, you get huge amounts and if you are not big, you get virtually nothing . I would not say you get huge amounts but the money is going towards the top. The middle class musician is not doing so well. Just to push that, what do you get for the replay of your song, the streaming of your song, for example . Pennies . Less than pennies. Depends on what service you are looking at, if you are looking at Something Like youtube undoubtably the biggest streaming service in the world, as a songwriter, we probably get about, if we have written the whole song, which these days is very rare, if you have a hit song, then you would get about £100 for 1 million streams. You are not going to get rich on youtube. You get a bit more, maybe ten times as much if you are on spotify or apple but it is still not a huge amount because 1 million streams, back in the day, how many downloads or cds that would be. Quite enlightening. Does it lead to the unintended consequence that if touring becomes such an important source of income, it is giving fans more of a chance than ever to see their favourite artists live in arenas and stadiums around the world . Arenas and stadiums around the world . Sure, but even then, you have to get to the point where you are a stadium playing musician and if you look at the list, on the rich list, people who tour a lot, either that 01 people who tour a lot, either that or partnerships, youtube, taylor swift, huge tour this year, so did ed sheeran, and he goes out and it is him and a guitar, granted he has some crew with him, but compared to if you are a big band and dancers and everything, a lot more costly. If you are that type of artist, you certainly make money. But the important thing is of course it is all underpinned by the music. So we need to kind of feed the musicians and the song writers who are making the music that then feeds the touring business and the branding business. Coldplay have put a kibosh on the touring business, bad for the climate, on the touring business, bad for the climate, maybe they have to find other ways. In your first answer, winner takes it all, reference to money. Are we going to get an abba songin money. Are we going to get an abba song in every answer . money. Are we going to get an abba song in every answer . I am swedish ido song in every answer . I am swedish i do try. You are watching worklife on bbc news. Thousands of firefighters are battling around 100 bushfires in the australian state of new south wales. The most severe are on the outskirts of sydney, which has been blanketed by thick smoke all week. Since october, bushfires have killed six people and destroyed more than 700 homes across australia. Shaimaa khalil is in sydney. It just goes itjust goes on. If anything, it looks like it is getting worse. Itjust goes on. If anything, it looks like it is getting worsem is getting worse. Remember, just the beginning of the summer season, it is likely it is going to get hotter, drier, in this unrelenting spell of drought in this country. The thing about it as well, the costs keep accumulating. Any given bushfire impacts in so many ways. Life, wildlife, property, crucialwater resources that are quite scarce at the moment. This impacts on government budgets and rising insurance costs as well. But as you mentioned, the smoke is one big hazard as well and this is going to see a lot of medical insurance bills, a lot of medical impacts, as more people have been going to hospitals complaining about respiratory problems. At the heart of it is drought. I was speaking to one firefighter last week who said, u nless we one firefighter last week who said, unless we get rain, unless there was respite, this will keep happening time and time again. Thank you very much indeed. The markets. Asian stocks gained on friday as investors took heart from us President Donald Trump saying trade talks with china were moving right along. Us oil prices retreated but are still near two and a half month highs after 0pec and other producers agreed to cut output. Nervousness before the release of us jobs data later in the day could mean investors move cautiously in the trading session. David, over to you. Time now for our daily look at some of the newspaper and website stories which have caught our eye. Joining me is kate hardcastle, founder of Business Consultancy insight with passion. A great name for a consultancy. Very nice to see you. Let us start on thomas cook, it feels like a long time ago, the disaster that was the colla pse time ago, the disaster that was the collapse of thomas cook, and yet, if you are a customer, still stuck in the doldrums, havent got your money back. We have got to pay good night to the good work being done, many people have received a refund, many people have received a refund, many people were repatriated from holidays, and people jumped people were repatriated from holidays, and peoplejumped into great effect, to try to make sure the consumer did not lose out. U nfortu nately, we the consumer did not lose out. Unfortunately, we have heard there was a window of time, 60 days, for a refund. That is what they said, the caa. But it was approximate and quite a lot of people have hit a point where just before 60 days they have received an e mail asking for further information on some of the consumers have said the information requested from them to start with was not very thorough and it has led to initial issues when trying to process claims, they have had a lot of fraudulent claims coming in, and there is a huge challenge of trying to get people with valid claims cash back asap. We know the critical point is we are hitting christmas scene, very expensive time for a lot of consumers, it is affecting so many people christmas soon. It is not just a story many people christmas soon. It is notjust a story of many people christmas soon. It is not just a story of cancelled holidays and savings in jeopardy but people waiting for an elongated time. Despite people doing what they are always told to do, look for the atoll and abta logos and they are still struggling. They actually booked a safe holiday, the certification was there. The money will come, refunds will be made, they are not suggesting they will not get the money. But there is no clear timeframe. You have to make sure you have all the information you can at hand ready to process. 67,000 claims on day one, big challenge clearly. Getting ready for the story of the day. Artist at work here this is apparently. This is art. My artistic interpretation. So delighted you have props, so much more than i ever thought. We have heard this morning there was a piece of duct tape with a banana attached toa of duct tape with a banana attached to a wall selling for 120,000 from a very comedic and quite eccentric artist. You may know him from his work. He was the guy behind the gold plated work. He was the guy behind the gold plated toilet work. He was the guy behind the gold plated toilet called america. Do you remember that piece . Missing in action, the american toilet. Stolen from blenheim palace. That is right, part of the guggenheim exhibition. How do we spend our money . 120 k. Five k . 90 . In the eye of the beholder and the artist himself has said a banana isjust a banana. He has not even said it is not a banana. He can reproduce it surprisingly and the next one is 150 grand. Dont feel left out, you can still have one. What is it about bananas and art . And he will hold a used one as well. Very iconic but i will be spending my money more wisely andy warhol. Will be spending my money more wisely andy warhol. Lovely to see you. Thank you. Still to come. Weve had black friday and cyber monday. Now, get ready for Small Business saturday. Does that sound a little more wholesome . Well speak to the woman whos urging us to shop small this christmas. Youre with worklife from bbc news. Fewer staff are being placed into permanent roles according to the novemberjob monitor from kpmg and the recruitment and employment confederation. The report blames uncertainty around the election and brexit and saw the slowest increast in vacancies for a decade. Yael selfin is a chief economist. He is from kpmg. This thing about permanent roles versus i suppose the gig economy type of work, is that necessarily a bad thing . For some people, the flexibility is a real upside. Yes, pros and cons with different types, but ultimately, we are looking at permanent placements asa are looking at permanent placements as a vote of confidence by businesses in terms of the long term prospects of their business and their ability to make longer term plans and for the majority of businesses in the uk, it is really the permanent placements that indicate how confident they are in the short term future of the economy and how confident they are in making those plans. Is it as simple as saying, dare i say, get brexit done estimate let us remove that phrase. Get the election over and things will change again . Get brexit done . We are hoping the election in particular is putting quite a lot of big clouds on plans at the moment and once that is done and we have a clearer view of what government is planning to do for the next year or so and hopefully also some plans that go beyond brexit in terms of all the other things government will need to do to kick start the uk economy, that will give businesses confidence to start investing again and to start hiring permanent places again. Very, very briefly, most of the parties are offering a lot of investment coming our way, that must be seen as a big positive, frankly. Yes, it is positive, but we do need to bear in mind two things. Despite the news you have on replacement jobs at the moment, the Labour Market in itself is still very tight. We have to stick on the one point, we have run out of time, thank you forjoining us. Thank you. Youre watching worklife. A reminder of our top story. Ride hailing app uber says it had 6,000 Sexual Assault reports in the us in two years. Now christmas beckons, which can only mean one thing a shopping spree for many. It is about helping to inspire, support, promote Small Businesses and it is a one day, tomorrow, but it is about Behavioural Change so you discover a Small Business and support them for the rest of the year. By Small Business, do you need shops do you mean shops . Year. By Small Business, do you need shops do you mean shops . No, all Small Businesses, there is a focus on the high street at this time of year, it is easy for us to get out and support our local community businesses, but Small Businesses are also online, service businesses, cafe is, restaurants, hairdressers, plumbers, Small Business community is huge. A big part of our goal is to get them to the top of the conversation, get people talking about the value of Small Business. When they are up against the big names, big retailers, where you can go to names, big retailers, where you can gotoa names, big retailers, where you can go to a shopping mall, do your shopping in one go, even easier, do it online, have it delivered the next day, what is it Small Businesses can say, hang on, this is what we offer that goes above and beyond that . Consumers are becoming more savvy, actually. We have seen over the last seven years of Small Business saturday a change in behaviour and a slight cultural change, people thinking more about where they spend money. Small businesses, you are right, there are things Small Businesses there are things Small Businesses there are things big businesses can do. But we are seeing innovation, focus on experiences. Also, the recognition of the local Community Side of it, they employ 17 million people, so they employ 17 million people, so the chances are, you work for a Small Business or your partner, cousin, neighbour, it is very personal. You can build a relationship, you know their name
