Is named person of the year, by time magazine. Its the last day of the uks Election Campaign. Polls open at 7am on thursday morning. There is a great deal at stake not just who forms the next government but whether brexit happens on january 31. If Boris Johnson gets a majority that will happen if he doesnt, who knows . As youd imagine the Party Leaders have been working hard. Borisjohnson began by helping with milk delivery part of which was interupted by one of his aides swearing at a journalist on live tv. The Prime Minister then said to the journalist ill be with you in a second. But he wasnt he didnt do the interview. Amongst all that, the Prime Minister continued to push his message that hes the man to deliver brexit. Jeremy corbyns message is that a vote for labour is a vote for hope. Here he is in middlesbrough in the north east of england. The north east is traditonal a labour stronghold, but polls suggest the tories brexit message is making in roads. Well see. The liberal democrat leaderjo swinson has been focusing her efforts on predominantly remain supporting seats in the south of england and in london. And in scotland, Nicola Sturgeon from the snp made her pitch in edinburgh. Boris johnson started the day in leeds, before travelling south to derby, on to south wales and across the country to essex his target appears to be areas which largely voted for brexit. This is the perfect metaphor for what we are going to do in a run up, if we can get a working majority, we have a deal, we are ready to go, you saw how easy it is. We put it it in the oven, take it out, there it is, get brexit done. Jeremy corbyn has focussed on shoring up the labour vote. He started in scotland before heading to middlesborough, sheffield and bedford. I have come here with a message of hope. A message of hope for this country of what this manifesto and what our party represents. Because what we have had for the past 9 years has been cuts in public services, cuts in our National Health service, and frozen wages, frozen Public Sector wages, and many people have lost theirjobs. The liberal democrats have made their campaign about brexit. Jo swinson spent the day targeting seats in the south east of england and london where the majority want to remain in the eu. People out there who are thinking about how best they can stop borisjohnson getting his majority, how they can vote to stop brexit, liberal democrats are well placed to take seats from the conservatives in so many areas. And the Scottish National partys leader Nicola Sturgeon has been targetting closely contested constituencies. If people do not want to have further cuts to public services, if we dont want to be dragged out of europe against our will and to have borisjohnson as Prime Minister, then vote snp to make sure we take our future into our own hands and build a Better Future for scotland. Sean curran is in westminster. When of the curiosities as we thought this would be a brexit only Election Campaign. It is not really worked out that way. No. Boris johnson, one called the selection, made very clear that he wanted it to be about brexit and was calling it because he was so frustrated with the situation in parliament. But of course, just because the governing party wa nts course, just because the governing party wants the election to be about something, it doesnt mean the opposition parties will follow suit and they have got their own agendas and they have got their own agendas and their own policies. Of course, it doesnt necessarily mean that the voters will decide that that is the number one issue as well. The electorate get to choose which issues they think are important, and up to date, and this into a campaign where we see this frantic movement around the country, what we have seen is the parties reinforcing their key messages, so yes, for borisjohnson, it their key messages, so yes, for Boris Johnson, it is their key messages, so yes, for borisjohnson, it is brexit. But we saw there for the other parties, they are focusing on their key messages, not simply moving onto his territory. Dont go anywhere. Lets look at the key messages from the parties. For Boris Johnson thats getting brexit done. Hes promising the uk will leave the eu onjanuary 31. And that the uk and eu will sign a new trade deal by 2021. Hell need a majority to do that. Our economy is being held back at the moment by the drag anchor of our broken parliament. And people cannot make decisions and businesses cannot invest and theres about £150 billion worth of Foreign Direct Investment that will come into this country as soon as we get brexit done and get our deal over the line, and we can get brexit done. Because we have a deal. It is ready to go. As i said before, it is oven ready. Labour says itll renegotiate the brexit deal within three months and hold a new referendum on that deal in six months. The liberal democrats have gone further they say theyll stop brexit immediately. We are an internationalist party, a liberal party, we recognise that this is a fight for the soul of our country. Are we open or closed . Are we generous or selfish . Do we reach out and work with others or do we pull up the drawbridge . And whether it is guaranteeing our prosperity or our security, or tackling the climate emergency, we know we can do that so much better by working with our closest neighbours. The snp also supports a second referendum, or stopping brexit if a no deal brexit is inevitable. On non brexit issues, labour is pledged to nationalise a number of public services, including rail and broadband internet. Its also pledged £400 billion for infrastructure, 100,000 new Council Houses every year, and funding boosts for schools and hospitals. The nhs in particular became a Huge Campaign issue for labour. We have an nhs crisis all over the country. We are 40,000 nurse vacancies, we have doctor vacancies, we have all kinds of Specialist Services that are not properly funded. We have a maintenance problem in many of our hospitals and we have 10 billion in privatisation that is happening. 0ur nhs needs money and it needs a government that is prepared to support it. The conservatives have also promised more funding for the nhs pledging 50,000 nurses, although as we now know 19,000 of those will be existing staff who otherwise may have left. The party is also promising an extra 20,000 Police Officers thats fewer than the number cut by the conservatives in the last nine years. So both of the major parties have made large spending promises. Heres pauljohnson from the institute for fiscal studies. We know that the conservatives over the last two electoral cycles have ended up spending and borrowing a lot more than they said they would in their manifesto. I think that will happen again because they are suggesting nothing in the way of additional spending this time around. Beyond what is already announced. Labour has an enormous manifesto, vast spending increases in tax increases which probably cannot be delivered within a single parliament. Sean is in westminster. We had the Prime Minister talking about and have them ready brexit deal. I have been quite surprised how little scrutiny there has been of the detail within that deal. Ive been ready. Has that surprise you . Its been quite odd really. This election was called by Boris Johnson because he had brought the deal back that he negotiated with the eu, he put forward a bill to parliament, it cleared the first pick parliament your hurdle, but then because mps would not agree to then because mps would not agree to the Prime Minister timetable, he wa nted the Prime Minister timetable, he wanted to push it through du the comments at quite a fast rate, because of that he posse legislation. Since then there is been very little debate. Push it through the house of commons. Yet, if mrjohnson is the Prime Minister inafew if mrjohnson is the Prime Minister in a few days time, we expect that bill will once again to be on the floor the commons and it will be preoccupied everybody for the next few weeks. Of course, Jeremy Corbyn has said that he would renegotiate the deal and went a new completely new deal and get we are really not had a forensic examination of what has been negotiated over the past five weeks. Plenty of people watching us in the uk and around the world thinking when we find out which way this is gone. What is the chronology of the night . 0k, which way this is gone. Time magainze has named Greta Thunberg as its person of the year atjust 16. The youngest person to ever have received this accolade. The post office has agreed to pay more than 57 Million Pounds to settle a dispute with former subpostmasters and postmistresses, who were wrongly accused of fraud and false accounting. It brings to an end a series of court cases about a computer system, which was used to manage local post office finances. Simon gompertz explains the background to the case. It all goes back to the beginning of the century, the year 2000, when a new system called horizon was brought in to manage the finances of the local post offices, and shortfalls began to appear in their money day after day. The question i suppose is how much those individual postmasters and postmistresses are going to get and money has to be taken off of the total for the legal fees, for a firm which backs litigation which gets its share but you can still see individuals getting tens of thousands and perhaps more where they were worst affected. This is 0utside source live from the bbc newsroom. 0ur lead story is . Its the last day of campaigning for tomorrows uk general election, and all the Party Leaders have been out hoping to win over voters. The Indian Parliament has given its final approval to a bill making it easier for refugees to claim citizenship, but only if they are non muslims. Spains acting Prime MinisterPedro Sanches says hes accepted a mandate from the king to try and form a government, and will reach out to other parties. The socialists have been scrambling to secure support since winning the november election without enough seats to govern on their own. And an all electric seaplane has taken to the skies in canada. The short test flight, involved a six passenger aircraft, fitted with an electric motor. It can only fly about 160 kilometres, but the operator said, it was a step towards building the worlds first, all electric commercial fleet. That story popular on bbc. Com. Aung san suu kyi is de facto leader of myanmar, shes a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and today she has defended her country against accusations of genocide. This was at the International Court ofjustice in the hague. The case has been brought by the gambia in west africa on behalf of a group of other must win majority countries. On behalf of a group of other muslim majority countries. We know myanmars military launched a crackdown against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State in 2017 its alleged that the operation included systematic rape, murder and torture. What we can be certain of is that thousands of rohingyas were killed and more than 700,000 fled to neighbouring bangladesh. Ever since, myanmar has insisted it was acting against violent militants and Aung San Suu Kyi today maintained that position today but conceded Excessive Force may have been used. Heres some of her testimony. Mr president , it cannot be ruled out that this force was used by the members of the defence services, in some cases, in disregard of International Humanitarian law. Or that they did not distinguish clearly enough between our fighters and civilians. Next this is an activist and former political prisoner in myanmar who was listening in court. It is really unbelievable in our lifetime we are seeing a Nobel Laureate who we used to look up to, who we respect a lot, taking a side with the military and defending the militarys crimes and denying our suffering, of the victims. The bbcs Anna Holligan has been talking to other activists outside the court. These rohingya fear that families are being erased from Rakhine State. They are urging the judges to agree to the gambia request for emergency measures to protect the 600,000 rohingya people that that remain in myanmar. The women who many once regarded as their greatest hopes stood in court and urge thejudges not to intervene and risk aggravating what Aung San Suu Kyi described as a complex conflict. Rebcecca henschke is in the hague. Basically, she said that the country did not have genocidal intent because they are intent now on trying to improve the lives of muslims in the Rakhine State with education and health. She also said that with the case that gambia presented yesterday, this devastating testimony of human rights abuses, was inaccurate and an incomplete picture of a very complex situation she said. She basically gave the court a History Lesson and said what was happening there was the military carrying out a counterinsurgency operation against militants who had attacked police in the area. She did admit as we heard in that clip quite a significant admission from her that maybe in that operation, there had been human rights abuse, by rogue soldiers, but she told the court that they would be dealt with within the militarys own Justice System and there was no need for the International Community to get involved. In fact, she said it would be harmful to solving this conflict. Rebecca, from what we understand, the role of this court has what powers does it have when we get to the end of this process . Fairly limited powers, but what is really happening is an extraordinary situation where you see Aung San Suu Kyi having to stand before the world court and effectively trying just court and effectively trying to justify these crimes that gambia laid out for three hours. What the gambia is asking the court to do is to put provisional measures in place, basically stop measures to say that myanmar cannot carry out any more violence against the rohingya community, they say they need to be far reaching in measure in terms of the fact that myanmar will have to report to the court in the coming months to show that no violence has taken place. They also want myanmar to commit to not destroying any evidence that may be used in a further genocide case that could take place in the International Criminal court where you would see members of the military put on trial. This is something the United Nations independent Fact Finding Team did call for, they said the crime that had been committed there were significant enough that there should be a criminal charge. But this court is quite limited in what it can decide. But it may lead to further economic sanctions if it is found guilty in the same light of what we have seen from the United States this week. Us safety regulators predicted a high chance of future accidents involving the boeing 737 max aircraft but failed to ground the planes until after a second fatal crash. The federal Aviation Authority has been giving testimony in a congressional hearing today. As this document shows, after the first crash in october last year, faa analysts predicted there could be as many as 15 more fatal accidents if the planes software wasnt fixed. Michelle fleury in new york has been following the hearings. All of which makes the question why was this not flagged as a problem earlier . This was something that came up again and again and the hearing this morning and which for the first time we saw the new faa head Stephen Dixon come hejoined in august, he wasnt there when the crashes occurred but obviously it is 110w crashes occurred but obviously it is now answerable for the actions of the us regulator. And we heard from the us regulator. And we heard from the head of the committee come saying that the faa rolled the dice on safety and when he was asked to address why this report, the own internal report from the fa
