All Primary Schools in england will reopen at the beginning of next month. Greece announces plans to restart tourism from the middle ofjune, with International Flights operating from onejuly. And captain tom moore the World War Two veteran whos raised more than 30 Million Pounds for the nhs is awarded a knighthood. Hello and welcome to audiences in the uk and around the world. Were covering all the latest coronavirus developments here in britain and globally. Borisjohnson says that theres growing confidence the uk will have a world class system to test people who have contracted coronavirus and trace those, they may have infected, by the beginning ofjune. The uk Prime Minister said, there would be 25,000 contact tracers, able to track up to ten thousand cases as day. The nhs Contact Tracing app, is likely to be rolled out later. Meanwhile, the aircraft engine maker, rolls royce, is cutting 9,000 jobs worldwide, as a result of the pandemic, most of them in the uk. Union leaders say, its shameless opportunism. In brazil, more than a thousand deaths are reported in a single day, amid warnings the outbreak is weeks away from its peak. And greece announces its opening up its Tourism Industry from the middle ofjune, with International Flights from the first ofjuly. Our first report comes from Sophie Hutchinson on Contact Tracing in the uk. Every day, thousands of new Coronavirus Infections are still being reported in the uk. Tracking the virus down and isolating the infected is widely believed to be the best way to control the pandemic. But today in parliament, the labour leader questioned why there had been such a delay in the setting up a track and trace system. In the united kingdom, despite two million tests having been carried out, there has been no effective tracing in place since march 12 when tracing was abandoned. That is nearly ten weeks in a critical period without effective test tracing. That is a huge hole in our defences. We will have a test, track and trace operation that will be world beating, and yes, it will be in place, it will be in place byjune at first. Will be in place byjune the first. There will be 25,000 trackers, and they will be able to cope with 10,000 new cases per day. We spoke to a newly recruited tracker, a graduate. He asked to remain anonymous. He started work three days ago, but described a chaotic system with barely any training for this onlinejob. I had one day in a classroom. That was 90 people in one group with one teacher. Whenever we asked questions, he would try, but the main answer was wait for the coming days, you will get an e mail or something. Right now, i am just sitting strolling through netflix. People say we cannot complain, we are getting paid, which is very true, but at the same time, why would they set us up doing this if we are just sat around waiting . It is not very productive at all. But even if the government does get the 25,000 new tracking recruits up and running in 11 days, there are still questions about whether this app, intended to trace the contacts of those infected, will be Ready Anytime soon. Daniel daltry is a contact tracer in vermont in the United States usually hes a disease investigative specialist working on stds, but hes now been redeployed to do Contact Tracing for covid 19. Welcome to the programme. Youve had a lot of experience in this whole area of Contact Tracing. Tell me more about how it works. When we get a report from the laboratory, we are contacting other loupe i did the medical provider or the consumer immediately. Timeliness is critical in this infection. There is also critical that you somehow have got to elicit the right information and convince people to actually be honest in their experience whether it is stt or coronavirus here. Stds. Indeed. A short window period we have a introduction can be up to introduce yourself properly to the individual. They need to have a sense of trust and verification that you are who you say you are and a willingness to chat with you a bit further. Ive had conversations go as short as three minutes, some go as short as three minutes, some go as long as an hour. These conversations can happen at all times a day, and as one of my collea g u es times a day, and as one of my colleagues will often say, when we are making these calls we might not be catching people on their best day. But at that point, it is critical we try tojoin day. But at that point, it is critical we try to join with them and partner with them and try to elicit their understanding of the infection but also who is most at risk and how we can be a part of the equation of helping them and ultimately arresting the transmission cycle. There is a lot of talk around tech based solutions as well and people like yourself. Can you be done . Without having that in place given the scale of what are talking about . Yes. Having another tool in the tool box is always grand. You can never replace the human to human interaction, technology will take us far, we a lwa ys technology will take us far, we always need a Human Element involved in the equation. Humans reaching out to other humans, may be Utilising Technology as long as we can ensure privacy as well best service i think to respect of individuals that we are aiming to serve. Interesting image of privacy. That is a real concern everywhere. Weve seen even in the uk today an example of that was some of the traces in a readily and the information being leaked. Bomber. The dash in reading. Thats a bummer. We need to ensure that we train them from the get. Confidentiality is the get. Confidentiality is the get. Confidentiality is the get. Confidentiality is paramount. When we are working on behalf of a client. That is the person that we are going to be working with and we need to protect their information. We are doing a marathon here, not a sprint. We cannot bring that contact when we have that opportunity. Briefly, in the us, how patchy is the Contact Tracing there . It is rather buried. From all the different project areas. Buried. We have to leave it there. Thank you for joining we have to leave it there. Thank you forjoining us on the programme. Rolls royce says it is cutting nine thousand jobs the bulk of them in the uk in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Rolls royce whose main site is in derby where it makes plane engines warned that it will take several years for the Airline Industry to recover. Unions have accused the company of throwing workers under the bus. Sarah corker reports from derby. Derby is a city shaped by manufacturing. Rolls royce is one of its largest employers. But tonight, thousands ofjobs at this huge site, the companys aviation headquarters, are now at risk. And that will send a Ripple Effect through this community. It is huge. And to lay off a lot of those people will be devastating for the area. Rolls royce is the backbone of derby, really, as far as wages and cost of living goes. It employs people from generations. It is a big hit for every family in a derby. Unfortunately, a lot of people have lost theirjobs and businesses, a sign of the times. Demand for new aircraft and engines that rolls royce makes has slumped, so it is cutting a fifth of its global workforce. The covid i9 pandemic has grounded planes across the globe, and it could take several years for passenger numbers to recover. It is a very difficult day for our employees all around the world, but we need to get on and do this now, because it is about creating a Sustainable Business for the future so that ultimately, we can protect the jobs that we will have left as a result of this. The rolls royce workshops of derby have been producing engines for almost 20 years. Rolls royce has a 116 year history in derby, and is one of the uks world leading manufacturers, it has created highly skilled, sought after jobs. The car parks here are virtually empty, because rolls royce has furloughed thousands of staff. Managers, though, know that that scheme cannot and will not last, and have described this as a deep crisis. And while the bulk ofjob losses are expected to be here in derby, the company has sites at 30 other locations across the uk. The scale of these job cuts has raised fears of factory closures, as the Company Plans to save £1. 3 billion. We are not oblivious to what is going on out there. We absolutely see the difficulties and challenges that employers and businesses face. But that should not mean that the workers pay the price for that. Everyjob lost at rolls royce is fourjobs lost in the supply chain industry, so it is massive. This is another sign of that big business has accepted there will be no immediate bounce back, and the economic recovery will be slow and painful. Now how is the Summer Holiday season currently looking across europe . Greece has said, it plans to start its tourist season onjune the 15th, with International Flights operating from the 1st ofjuly. The uk foreign office, still advises against all but essential overseas travel but all the major european destinations are now gradually relaxing their lockdowns. France currently allows only essential travel from abroad. It hasnt said when its foreign tourist ban will be lifted. But many beaches are now open although sunbathing is still banned. Spain has started loosening its restrictions on a region by region basis. And in italy beaches, parks, restau ra nts a nd bars will gradually open from june along with all airports. Joining me now from athens is aris soulounias, the Vice President of the hellenic hoteliers federation. Welcome to the programme. Are you convinced it is safe and not too soon to restart things there in greece . Good evening from grace, from athens. Fortunately, our government has made a greatjob. Good evening from greece. They have prepared a plan for a secure restart of the tourist for 2020. Today, our Prime Minister actually has announced that all of the new measures for the restart of the greek tourism. It will give us confidence that tourist will start step by step will start. At the same hand, we have to offer safety and relaxation. Let me ask you a few questions about that. You are sure it is going to be safe and not too soon . Will you be testing people for example or any sort of quarantine as they come in . For the countries who have perform well with the covid 19, there will not be any testing on arriving into greece. Be some random test, but it will not be necessary for all of the passengers coming to greece to have this test. For some of the countries, which will be announced at a later stage, they might have to have a test, but these countries will be announcing the next 20 or 30 days. Briefly on that point, to clarify, you a list of countries where you still will perhaps have a certain amount of test and control and that will depend on their rates of coronavirus in their home countries . Absolutely. That is right. But we hope by the 1st ofjuly most of the countries will have much better results with the decrease of the coronavirus, so all of the European Union countries including the uk and some of the other countries will be free from protocols in this it is of the citizens of this country to travel. So we wait for the list to be announced. You mentioned the Prime Minister, the various measures put in place and he had not some cuts and the a t from coffee to airflight. Bate. In the attempt, because it is so vital for greece to get it going, last year, i think you had 30 million visitors. Realistically, what do you think that number might be in the year ahead . We cannot forecast right now the numbers because we have to wait for the Airline Companies and the operators to announce the programmes because today, nobody knew exactly the date of the greek tourism. As it has been announced today, the International Effort will open to all International Flights on the 15th ofjune. And all of the other effo rts 15th ofjune. And all of the other efforts of greece will be open on the 1st ofjuly. Airports of greece. If you get any sort of spike and upsurge numbers, do you anticipate further restriction because i suppose for your industry, you cannot afford another lockdown, can you . No. We cannot afford another lockdown. That is why the greek government in collaboration with the medical team in the medical advisers of the government have taken all of the protocols and measures and precautions in order to have any situation which might arise, which we hope will not be the case at scilly. Thank you for taking time to speak to us. It is a pleasure. We hope to welcome you to greece very soon. Good luck. The government says, it will listen to the concerns from parents and teachers about plans to re open some Primary Schools in england at the beginning ofjune. The bbc has learnt that more than 35 councils have warned, that not all their schools will be ready in time with some expressing opposition to opening amid safety concerns. 0ur education editor, branwenjeffreys, reports from bury in greater manchester, one of the towns which has said, it wont be re opening schools next month. Bury streets, empty of children on a sunny day. At home, waiting to go back to school. Here, the council says its too soon. Parents and teachers, still too fearful. We have the second highest rate of covid 19 in greater manchester. This is playing quite heavily on our parents and carers minds. Also, more regionally, the north west is the second hardest hit region in the country in terms of infection rates. Are you playing politics with this . Absolutely not. And im so sorry that some people have labelled this against bury council. Taking precautions already. This is what a five year old would see on arrival. No shared toys, no soft play areas. Wow, this is your library . Yes, this is our library. The head teacher, showing me what they have to do. Normally, you would see groups of children, three or four groups of children working here. Were a small school. All of the books taped off . All the books taped off, because we cant have them touching them. She tells me they wanted to get year six back soon. But Primary Schools in bury arent ready yet for the youngest. It was when reception and year0ne yeargroups were added on to the year six, that is when the shift in feeling came. Because there was a great deal and i use the word fear advisedly there was a great deal of fear for the children and the parents, and the staff in the schools. It will be one child at a time to the toilet. Every risk has to be considered. So, who decides . Well, its the head teacher and the school governors. But it would be a very brave Primary School that decided to go against the advice of its local council. And even in areas where councils are saying its up to schools, its very clear that any reopening of schools is going to be very patchy. If, for some reason, the school did want to continue to open when the local authority was advising not to, it would need to be very clear about its reasons for that decision. Why had they come to a different decision from the local authority . The longer these classrooms stay empty, the harder it is for parents to get back to work. Its about what risks, and when to take them. Branwenjeffreys, bbc news, bury. Brazil has seen a sharp escalation of the pandemic with officials reporting more than a thousand coronavirus deaths on tuesday thats the first time its passed that threshold. Nearly 18 thousand people have died so far. President bolsanaro also said new guidelines on the use of an anti malaria drug pushed by donald trump as a treatment for covid 19. David campa nale reports. Graves freshly dug in brazils largest city, sao paulo. But they have been made ready for a reason. In the past 2a hours, two grim milestones have been passed not only the most number of deaths, but also the highest number of confirmed new infections. With over a quarter of a Million People with the coronavirus, only the United States and russia have recorded higher numbers of cases. Its a disease clearly not under control. The trajectory of recorded deaths is heading sharply upwards, and experts say insufficient testing might mean the real infection rate could be 15 times higher. Translation were losing the battle against the virus, thats the reality. The virus at this moment is winning the war. These days coming up, the holidays, i dont see them as holidays, but i see them as battle days, the most important days in the fight against the virus. The countrys right wing president , jair bolsonaro, has dismissed the risks and compared covid 19 to a little flu. Despite the deaths, he still has support for his strategy of opposing lockdowns, including among those outside his president ial palace chanting chloroquine, the name of an antimalarial medication that the brazilian leader claims can be used against coronavirus. It now looks like the president will finally have his way on the drug, helped by his new interim Health Minister and army general, happy to take orders from his boss. President bolsonaro says a new protocol will be signed which widens the use of the drug beyond just critical patients. This despite there being no evidence yet that it helps treat or prevent covid 19. New federal guidelines recommend that doctors prescribe antimalarial drugs from the onset of symptoms. He isnt the only leader in the americas praising its theoretical use, but the trend of deaths and infections are facts that cant be argued with. Donald trump says he is now looking at closing us borders to travellers from brazil. David campanale, bbc news. A physician at a hospital in sao paulo who told me how bad well earlier, i spoke to leticia kawano dorado a physician at a hospital in sao paulo who told me how bad the situation was there. I have been seeing more severe cases and transfer the hospital there were more severe so they needed hospitals with a higher complexity level. As a physician i see colleagues burden and tired and getting infected. In brazil we have been having one of the highest rates of health care deaths related to covid 19. Right now, we are trying to keep track on that. We have at least 80 physician deaths due to covid 19, and more than 100 nurses deaths. So that is really worrying on a day to day basis. Do you think brazil. Absolutely. Ordinary brazilians are paying a price forestieri are paying a price for a a president who simply hasnt taken this seriously . Absolutely. It is very hard to understand, we are in may, in the middle of a huge crisis. There is no doubt that covid 19 is lethal. It is a Public Health problem and our president is still insisting it is no big deal and as long as you have hydroxychloroquine, you will be fine. Well, he has been pushing that and we heard that news from the health ministry. You have been doing trials on this antimalarial drug in connection with covid 19. I know you have not published that yet but have you seen anything to suggest that it works . Because the who was talking about it only half an hour ago and they were saying there was absolutely no evidence it helps here. So, the only way hydroxychloroquine could be a solution to end social isolation measures would be if hydroxychloroquine would have a huge effect in the preventing covid 19 to getting worse. And this huge effect is not observed anywhere in the world. We only have some publications from new york, from other places in the United States, reporting that there is no benefit and if there is a benefit, which will be detected by controlled trials, we will soon be publishing our results, it will be something of a smaller magnitude and it is not enough to end social distancing measures. The briefest of final thoughts. Do you think from where you are sitting, what you are seeing, the governments approach. It is only going to get worst in brazil . Unfortunately my answer is yes and it is really heart breaking because people are dying because of that. Here in the uk, the World War Two veteran captain moore is to be knighted for his Fundraising Efforts for the National Health service borisjohnson. Charities, after a special nomination by the Prime Minister borisjohnson. He walked 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday last month, and in the process raised almost ao million dollars. If you get there, it is offsetting that i really cant say how but i certainly feel that i have been given a very outstanding honour by the queen and the Prime Minister. And as i think them all very much, certainly on and delighted and i am overall by the fact that this is happened to me. Fantastic fa ntastic stuff. Fantastic stuff. Talking about what happens to universities next year after that news from Cambridge University. Here in just after that news from Cambridge University. Here injust a moment. Do not go away. Hello. Its been the warmest day of the year so far day out there for many of us. Certainly this and he is the week so far in scotland. Temperatures topped out a 2k degrees in highlands. The warmer state so far in scotland. In england, just above 28 celsius. For wales, at around 26 degrees. They didnt quite get there in Northern Ireland. We are all turning cooler, not cold, but cooler at the end of the week fourth chance of rain as well and with this area of low pressure. 0nce he comes in, thursday night into friday, lasting into the start of the weekend and it will be much 20 year. Especially the closer you are to that in scotland. Lets take are to that in scotland. Lets take a look at things through the night and into the morning. We are bringing your weather system in from the atlantic. Not a particularly dramatic one but it will give some rain to Northern Ireland and to weston scotland and parts of wales. Late in the night and early into the morning temperatures not going down too far. This continues to push east tomorrow morning come if you really wa nt tomorrow morning come if you really want some rain the further south you are, nota huge want some rain the further south you are, not a huge amount but the risk a nyway of are, not a huge amount but the risk anyway of some torrential thing every downpours and parts of the midlands and more east anglian air and the southeast before that clears away. As it will come a Northern Isles into the afternoon, plenty of afternoon sunshine and temperatures to high teens and quite widely mid 20s and parts of east and south east england, those temperatures are down compared with today. A look at this come over and the friday that the barry of low pressure comes in pushing rain and northeastward and the one speaking up all the while and heavy rain overnight into friday morning, that clears away eastwards with sunshine and showers, one or two for wales in weston anguish and freedom from Northern Ireland and prolonged downpours. And it will be a much when your date. Weston england. A flavour of some of the wind gust but from north Northern Ireland and scotland, guessing around 50 miles per hours in the winds gusts will start to approach 60 miles an hour in northwest gotland. As you might imagine, the temperatures have come down a few degrees. Still not cold out there. Sunny spells across parts of england into the low 20s. Bank holiday weekend, approaching still wet and windy for some towards the north and west of the uk. Turning drier, a bit warmer, and the wind easing. This is bbc news with the latest headlines for viewers in the uk and around the world. Borisjohnson says hes confident the uk will have a virus tracing system in place by the start of next month. Rolls royce announces plans to axe a fifth of its worldwide workforce in the wake of coronavirus. Mostjobs will go in the uk. Nobody is trivializing the challenges we face here, but i think its rash and its premature for rolls royce simply to resort to stacking and throwing under the bus thousands of uk workers, loyal workers. Brazil recommends the use of a controversial drug to treat covid 19, as its daily death toll passes 1000. Under growing pressure from councils, the government admits not all Primary Schools in england will reopen at the beginning of next month. Greece announces plans to restart its travel season from the middle ofjune with International Flights operating from 1july. And captain tom moore, the World War Two veteran whos raised more than 30 Million Pounds for the nhs, is awarded a knighthood. Hello and welcome to audiences in the uk and around the world. Were covering all the latest coronavirus developments here in britain and globally. Universities and colleges are being urged to tell students as soon as possible what sort of teaching they can expect during the next academic year, because of the coronavirus outbreak. Yesterday, Cambridge University became the first to announce that all of its lectures would be delivered online until summer 2021. Other universities across the uk are now looking at how they will deliver courses. Universities can charge full fees even if courses are taught online. We can speak now to posy putnam, who is a second year student at the university of cambridge. She joins us from her family home in oxford. Also im joined by zamzam ibrahim, president of the National Union of students. Welcome both of you here to the programme. Posy, let me start with you and your circumstances. When you heard last night though news from Cambridge University of just heard last night though news from Cambridge University ofjust asking all Cambridge University ofjust asking a ll lectures Cambridge University ofjust asking all lectures and putting them online till the summer of 2021, what did you think . To be honest, at first i was very confused because the news actually broke and the speed of press. We had received no kind of official e mail and suddenly, it was all over my facebook feed, and group chats, my friends were sharing it. I think it was kind ofjust a big. We all realise lectures are not socially distance and if social distancing is going to continue, having 200, 300 students together in a lecture will probably not be very realistic. But i think its another thing to be confronted with, like the concrete fact that they will not be going ahead as usual. The impact for you and learning, how would you assess it . I think its going to make it much more difficult. Ifind it to be incredibly difficult engaging necessarily over sort of a laptop. Its also the case, i have access to internet. I have my own laptop. That will be the case for everyone. Its also incredibly isolating. Lectures are good because you get to spend time with their friends, you get to speak to stu d e nts friends, you get to speak to students and your cohorts, and suddenly thats been taken away. Lets bring in zamzam. How commenced are you about the quality of education that can be guaranteed and maintained online . So we have a massive concerned about what this will look like. Things have not been made clear to students themselves which is what they should expect, especially students will make a commitment of not walking into student debt. We actually have a huge concern. We found out over 30 of students said they did not get adequate teaching, but they needed to be able to succeed and what they expected from their institution. So we have a huge concern about what this means. We urge the government to really give some guidance to the universities on what students should expect. Think do you think universities need to be clearer to potential students of what they are offering . Absolutely. I think that is more important than ever. I dont recommend the rest to start opening up recommend the rest to start opening up and putting the lives of students at risk, thats not the expectation. What they need to make very clear is what students should expect, therefore students should be able to make those decisions whether they wa nt make those decisions whether they want to continue to go to university this year or not. One of the unions has done a survey and it suggested that 120,000 students may defer going this summer. That takes it from 3 , to around 20 . From your conversations, posy, is that the same thing you are hearing people actively talking about, not going this year but perhaps putting it off . Of course. Sorry. Go ahead. I think as a second year student, both of my friends going into their third year are seriously considering intermission. Taking the year out to wait for teaching. I think it is very serious. I agree, and a large percent of students should be getting skills that cant really. We can theres only so much we can learn online, therefore there are large percent of students, student to do technical engineering, and those of the students who will be impacted the most. 0nline learning is dependent on the fact that you have resources to be able to access this work. Weve been told about how people are unable to access online lectures. These are things that are not being taken into account. How students all have very different experiences and are struggling in many different ways of. Zamzam, i know your focus is students, but do you accept that actually Going Forward will have it impact on the finances of universities, the future of lecturers, all of that thrown in. We are talking about Cambridge University. They have an international reputation, but many other universities might struggle. Absolutely. I think anything, this crisis has shown how unstable institutions were to begin with. Actually, we set from the beginning that the Education Sector should be funded by the government. If we were ina funded by the government. If we were in a situation where the funding model was very different and it was sustainable for students to be honest with what services they can provide to students, we found ourselves in a very different place. Posy, lets pick up on that point. A lot of factors for universities, but for students already there, are you still being asked for full fees . For everything use year and Going Forward for next year . It was actually confirmed today by a higher up actually confirmed today by a higher up in the University Administration about full fees will be charged next year, regardless of how that is delivered. Its a difficult time for eve ryo ne delivered. Its a difficult time for everyone financially, so i can understand how universities have done that and honestly, i think its ha rd to done that and honestly, i think its hard to blame specific universities when that is the funding model and many universities will really, really struggle. Especially if more stu d e nts really struggle. Especially if more students plan to defer. While personally it is a financial commitment, especially for quality of teaching, universities are stuck between a rock and a hard place and im sure lots of universities will have to make funding cuts that will affect the quality of education for stu d e nts affect the quality of education for students and the quality of the job for lecturers and other staff. Do think its fair . For lecturers and other staff. Do think its fair . Absently not. I think its fair . Absently not. I think universities need to consider what they will be offering to students and make them clear to them. The whole multitude of questions Going Forward, but we run out of time. Thank you so much for your time out of time. Thank you so much for yourtime and out of time. Thank you so much for your time and joining us this evening. One of the most powerful cyclones in decades has hit the bay of bengal. It made landfall in bangladesh and india in the last few hours. Its been categorised as an extremely Severe Weather system, with winds gusting up to 185 kilometers per hour. The cyclone system is around 500 kilometres in diameter. Here you can see it making its approach up the east coast of india. These pictures are from that east coast. Millions of people have now been evacuated from parts of india and bangladesh. But the Mass Evacuation has been complicated by coronavirus, with the authorities trying to limit the number of people in each shelter. Yogita limaye has been following the story from mumbai. Ijust spoke to i just spoke to the director general for the India Natural Disaster Response force. Hes talking to his commanders who say what they are seeing are pictures of devastation, uprooted trees, houses whose roofs i would have been blown away. Houses with roofs blown away. Its an externally poor area, so there we re an externally poor area, so there were people staying in huts. He reckons, although he said we would have to wait to go on the ground and assess whats really happened, but he says he thinks it will be fairly devastating. Whats also worrying is that this storm is passing near the city of kolkata, very deadly populated. Weve seen videos shared on social media in kolkata, they look pretty scary. Transformers, you have sparks flying out of them, he did tell me he expects electric lines, telephone poles, this storm, the winds are so strong they could devastate all of that. Frantic effo rts devastate all of that. Frantic efforts to try to move people. Huge numbers involved, but presumably, many people also stayed . Well, i think we have these cyclones every yearin think we have these cyclones every year in the bay. Its been put into these Early Warning systems into then getting people to move to shelters, into prepping these shelters. So they are pretty practised when it comes to actual evacuation. What has made it difficult this time around, thats what the Disaster Response chief was talking about, you ought to have a coronavirus outbreak. And sort of lashing rain and gusting winds, you cant necessarily maintain all of those protocols. Then when you get to the shelters, thats when you try to the shelters, thats when you try to make sure that everything is clea n. To make sure that everything is clean. They been trying to sanitise and they say thankfully schools and colleges have been closed here because of the coronavirus crisis. They been able to take those additional shelters so they can allow for some social distancing. We are expecting the devastation definitely to be quite widespread and quite massive in india, the loss of life, well, last year we had a similar cyclone. The loss of life, about 16 people in the state were killed, but they hadnt been evacuated and it could have been in the thousands. We have to wait to see when they can assess more. The government has confirmed there will be some new checks on goods coming into Northern Ireland from the rest of the uk as part of the brexit deal. That despite repeated assurances from Boris Johnson that wasnt the case. Ministers are stressing that controls will be kept to a minimum. 0ur ireland correspondent, emma vardy, is at belfast port. This has been the most agonised part of brexit. Goods that enter the eu, they need to be checked. This plan came about to avoid the elite need for those checks taking place on the irish land border. Between Northern Ireland and the republic of iran. Keeping that border invisible has beena keeping that border invisible has been a key part republic of ireland. The border has effectively been mood here can Northern Ireland s ports. That means goods from Great Britain entering Northern Ireland will be subject to new checks. It means new paperwork for gb business is to fill out if they are exporting goods over here. Those new checks will mostly be on food and on animal products. Northern ireland will also have to be biting by eu rules on manufactured goods. All this is supposed to be operational here by january. All this is supposed to be operational here byjanuary. Its an arrangement which the democratic unionist have always been uncomfortable with. They dont like the idea of Northern Ireland having to stick by eu rules and under eu processes after the uk has left the eu. The uk government and the eu still dont see eye to eye on a few elements of this too. Theres concern from the eu that this will be enough to prevent Northern Ireland being used some sort of back door, so still a few things to be ironed out on this. London has been harder hit by coronavirus than anywhere else in the uk. Almost 6 thousand people have died in hospitals in the capital since the beginning of march. Newham in east london has been particularly badly affected. 0ur social Affairs Correspondent michael buchanans report contains some flashing images. This is not an equalising virus, this is a virus that has a disproportionate effect on those poorer communities here in newham. Busy.
