Trump lawyer rudy giuliani, former white house chief of staff, mark meadows, former white house lawyer, john eastman, and a Formerjustice Department official, jeffrey clark. The charge sheet refers to the defendants as a quote criminal organization. The Indictment Document says mr trump knowingly and willingly joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in georgia, and elsewhere. The indictment marks the fourth time mr trump has been criminally charged this year. Lets take a listen to what Fulton County District Attorney fani willis said a short time ago. The indictment alleges that other than abide by georgias Legal Process for election challenges, the defendants engaged in a Criminal Racketeering Enterprise to overturn georgias president ial election result. Subsequent to the indictment, as is the normal process in georgia law, The Grand Jury issued Arrest Warrants for those who were charged. I am giving the defendants the opportunity to voluntarily surrender no later than noon on friday the 25th day of august, 2023. The grand jury investigation into mr trump was sparked by an infamous phone call between the former president and georgias secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger. Heres a little of what mr trump said during the call. Now, aside from the phone call with mr raffensperger, mr trump is also accused of pressuring lawmakers. Mr trumps team told them they had the power to decertify the states Electoral College results. He also allegedly coordinated a scheme to have fake members of the Electoral College cast their votes for mrtrump in georgia, rather thanjoe biden, who won the state. And, mr Trumps Campaign lawyers also reportedly worked with a data firm to copy Sensitive Data from Election Systems in a georgian county. The most serious charge violating the Racketeer Influenced And Corrupt Organizations Act is punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison. The act is designed to help take down organised criminal syndicates like the mafia. Former President Trump denies all charges and has taken to the social media site truth social stating the Witch Hunt Continues and claiming election interference. Heres the bbc s North America correspondent sean dilly who explained the charges and what is in the Indictment Document. Quite a lot of details. Theres also quite a lot of overlap between the unrelated or at least theoretically unrelated federal case that was held in the washington, dc courtjust maybe a mile up the road from where im sitting now. Now, in total, this 97 page indictment charges 19 people, that includes donald trump, with ricoh offences. Racketeering. Influenced organisations, corrupt organisations. And thats pretty significant because ordinarily this is the sort of legislation that is used to sort of attack mafia networks. Nobody is quite using words that are as strong as that, and under georgia law, you dont actually need to show that there was a physical enterprise in place, but whats being alleged by fani willis, the prosecutor, is that donald trump and 18 others, including some fairly significant names well come onto injust a moment, had conspired, had worked together to overturn georgias election Wherejoe Biden had won. Donald trump asked in that call we heard a little moment to go for 11,780 votes to essentially subvert the election result claims the prosecution. One of those Co Defendants charged who will stand trial with him is rudy giuliani, his old personal attorney, who has described this as the latest chapter in a book of lies, so fairly upset about the charges. Donald trumps lawyers have also responded talking about a one sided grand jury presentation. Again theres a legal point there that misses the fact that thats how grand juries in georgia work. But, as you can imagine, donald trump fairly irritated about this as we saw a moment ago on screen there from his truth social platform. Steven hurst is an expert in us politics from manchester metropolitan university. Hejoins us now. Thank you forjoining us here on bbc news. First of all lets look at the legal side of this. Just talk us through the charges and what we know is in this Indictment Document. Its is in this Indictment Document. It s complicated, the charges, i think the easiest way to understand this sort of thing is that in reality what they are doing is they are charging donald trump are trying to steal the election and subvert the election and to get false votes counted and find other ways of subverting the genuine result. And the actual charges often amount to whatever is the most effective technical way of doing this, for example, the racketeering charge, the central when they are using, has been said traditionally was used to bring down kind of large scale criminal organisations but in this case the essential thing about it is its to do with the organised nature of the way of effectively engaging in a conspiracy and an organised conspiracy, so its more the case that the law is being used in a kind of not exactly a creative way, but its a way of capturing what trump has done that isnt necessarily, the charges arent necessarily exactly what youd expect in terms of the detail that they capture the essence of what trump is done in terms of organising a conspiracy to try to bring down the election. Haw organising a conspiracy to try to bring down the election. How strong do ou bring down the election. How strong do you think bring down the election. How strong do you think the bring down the election. How strong do you think the case bring down the election. How strong do you think the case against bring down the election. How strong do you think the case against him i do you think the case against him is . We have of course got that phone call, the infamous phone call, but the other evidence thats been collated, what more do we know . I think the evidence is pretty strong. The phone call is pretty damning, but theres a lot of other quite clear evidence here. They werent very careful about covering their tracks in doing this. They were quite blatant about the things they did. There is a lot of evidence. I think its quite telling that if you look at what the Trump Lawyers have been doing, obviously trump says its a witchhunt, but the lawyers have really struggled to say anything and make any meaningful challenge beyond making claims about the Technical Process Being Run which the Supreme Court of georgia has thrown out comment so his lawyers are struggling to find much traction here. Traction here. Lets look at the Olitical Traction here. Lets look at the political side traction here. Lets look at the political side of traction here. Lets look at the political side of things. I fr theres not much new to say on this one. Its more of the same. Trump will say its all part of the witchhunt. Trump supporters will go along with that. Every new charge just confirms their conspiratorial view this as part of a grand plan to make sure he cant win the next election, so for them, they will just double down in terms of how it affects his base. It actually helps to secure the republican nomination. How it plays out if and when we get to a general election where he is running Againstjoe Biden is a different question. At that point, i think it starts probably to hurt him with those swing moderate voters who will probably look at this and think if hes been convicted of a charge which is quite likely by then do i really want to elect this man to be president . I think it hurts in the long term but in that short term it is shoring up its vote with the public. Wages grew in the uk at a record annual pace between april and june, according to the latest official figures out this morning. Regular pay, which excludes bonuses, reached nearly eight compared to a year earlier. Live now to our Business Correspondent peter ruddick. Were seeing a rise in pay but how good is this news . Is it outstripping the pace of price rises . Thats the key question and the answer is not yet. Although it might do soon. Let me explain. For the past few months, these wages figures have been quite contradictory for people. Essentially weve been talking about wages rising but no one has been feeling the benefit because prices have been rising and rising by more so today theres this record wage growth on a 7. 8 , between april and june compared with the same period a year earlier. Its the same period a year earlier. Its the highest for more than two decades. Even higherfor people in the private sector. However, when you take into account the most used measure of inflation, rising prices, wages are still falling by 0. 6 . However, they are falling by a lot less than they have been recently. Basically, dig into the details and the Direction Of Travel appears to be that peoples pay appears to be recovering and our average spending power should start increasing soon. But not quite yet. But not quite yet. Lets also focus on employment there are signs in the onss data that the uk Employment Market is easing. The jobless rate rose from 4 to 4. 2 . Just talk us through those figures. Thats right, we often talk about the Labour Market running hot or cold. And for quite awhile we had this combination of low unemployment, high number of vacancies, and, asjust mentioned, high wage growth. Essentially, a Labour Market running what we call it a bit hot and that matters because the Bank Of England wants to see the Labour Market cooling before they pause their Interest Rate hike cycle. So today, as you say, there was that edging up of the Employment Rate and thats partly down to people who are of working age but who wont actively looking for work who wont actively looking for work who are now looking for a job and may be taking a little while to find one. And the number of vacancies, that also fell by 66,000. However, there still more than 1 million unfilled job roles out there and of course there has been a rise in the number of people who cant work because of long term ill health and of course this record wage growth which we were just talking about. All of that means its probably too soon to the Labour Market is cooling sufficiently enough for the Bank Of England to stop raising rates yet. Essentially, todays figures are one part of a much larger puzzle and some of thejigsaw part of a much larger puzzle and some of the Jigsaw Puzzle Pieces we havent even seen yet so we get Inflation Numbers tomorrow and then more wage and inflation data before the next Bank Of England decision, so probably too early to say the Bank Of England could pause raising rates just yet.
