We start with a developing story the us soldier travis king, who was being held in north korea, is now in us custody. Hours earlier, north korea said it would deport private king who ran into the country across the Demilitarized Zone injuly. He had been due to be flown to the us, to face military disciplinary proceedings, when he escaped his escort and entered north korean territory. Those details are emerging all the time. Just in the last few moments, the Reuters News Agency reporting that he is in us custody after being expeued he is in us custody after being expelled by north korea into china, a very interesting significant development. There is a picture of travis king and taking everybody by surprise a month or so ago, he suddenly made that escape across the dmc into north korea and we have had absolutely nothing since then apart from just one or two lines from the north korean authorities. And apart from that, absolute silence. Gary o donoghue ready to talk to us about the latest. In terms of what we are learning in the last few minutes, private king in us custody . Yes. Learning in the last few minutes, private king in us custody . Yes, he is in us custody private king in us custody . Yes, he is in us custody and private king in us custody . Yes, he is in us custody and this private king in us custody . Yes, he is in us custody and this comes is in us custody and this comes after being in detention in north korea forjust over two months. He crossed over from the Demilitarised Zone into north korea in the middle ofjuly. And he has been there ever since. We should be able to bring you more details in short order about how this whole thing unravelled and how it all came about. At the moment that is under wraps. But we do understand he is in the custody of the us military and on his way home, in that sense. We should be able to bring you some more on that. Bear in mind, this will have been a huge diplomatic effort one way or another. The us doesn t have diplomatic relations with the dprk. More often than not, in the past, sweden has represented the United States in p hong yang, so they may have been involved in this. There may have been other agencies involved, too. At a difficult situation for both sides does look like it has been resolved. The north koreans have issued a statement saying they have expelled travis king. They make reference to what was his attitude to america in terms of racial inequality and unfairness in society. Travis king is a black man and that is something that came out while he was in detention and people wondered whether he had said any of that of his own free will, we will find out at some point when he gets to speak freely, if he chooses to do that. He is on his way back to us territory in some form or other, the 23 year old private from wisconsin. It is worth bearing in mind for him and his family, things are a bit uncertain about the future. He was on a charge when he crossed over into north korea. He had been taken to the airport by Military Officials to be put on a plane back to the United States to face charges over criminal damage and assault while on deployment in south korea. He left the airport, he went on a tour to the Demilitarised Zone and that is when he basically made a run for it. Zone and that is when he basically made a run for it. There will be concerns about him because you will remember the american student he was detained in north korea back in the 2000, eventually released in a coma and brought back to the United States and died in short order afterwards. People will be looking very carefully and asking close questions about the way travis king has been treated during his time, because thatis treated during his time, because that is of concern. More historical, there have been american soldiers who have crossed over. Let s remind viewers, this Demilitarised Zone, this division along the 53rd Parallel has been there, the 38th parallel, rather, has been there since 1953 since the end of the korean war, not the end of it, but since an arm assist. Since then, Many American soldiers have crossed over and many of them have died in north korea. Over and many of them have died in north korea north korea. Thank you for the u date, north korea. The green light has been given to develop the uk s largest untapped Oil And Gas Field in the north sea. Rosebank, which is 80 miles west of shetland, is expected to produce the equivalent of 300 Million Barrels of oil, during the expected 25 year lifetime of the project. But the decision is controversial because of its impact on climate change. Last month, 50 mps and peers from all major parties raised concerns the oil field could produce 200 Million Tonnes of carbon dioxide. Alexandra mackenzie reports. North sea oil is again at the centre of economic, political and climate debate. The long discussed rosebank Oil And Gas Field is run by the norwegian state energy firm, equinor. It says this will bring massive investment and jobs to the uk. There is a continued need for oil and gas. Through the entire transition and even after net zero, we will need oil and gas in our daily lives and to run society as we know it. Rosebank lies 80 miles west of shetland. Discovered in 2004, the field is in deep water of more than 1000 metres. Start up is expected late 2026 or early 2027. But there is much anger and frustration about this decision. Protesters gathered in whitehall, saying the approval was disastrous. Others said they despaired that this has happened in the middle of a Cost Of Living and climate crisis. I think we need to be clear that this is a huge mistake on economic grounds, on Energy Security grounds and on climate grounds, and that the uk public do not stand to benefit from this field. The uk government welcome the regulator s decision. Rishi sunak was in scotland this summer, where he defended the decision to grant 100 new north sea oil and gas licenses. He was also asked about rosebank. What i would say is that it s entirely consistent with transitioning to net zero that we use the energy we have got here at home, because we are going to need it for decades. So far betterfor our economy, forjobs and for Climate Emissions that we get it from here other than shipping it halfway around the world. Scotland s first minister humza yousaf said he was disappointed. Well, this is the wrong decision to be made. I have expressed my concern about rosebank going ahead for some time now. I think most reasonable people are in our position. We dont think the taps should be turned off tomorrow. There shouldnt be a cliff edge, but neither is the north east or scotlands future in Unlimited Oil and gas extraction. Keir starmer has set a Labour Government would have more reliance on green energy, including new offshore wind farms. But he would not reverse the rosebank decision if they win the next election. What we have said is, no new licences to be granted when we are in power, but we won t revoke any licenses that are granted before we come into power. So an extremely heated debate. Some strongly believe it is obscene. Others are just as adamant that this is a good day for the uk. Alexandra mckenzie, bbc news. Joining us live from brighton is the green party mp, caroline lucas. Welcome to the programme. Your basic reaction to this decision . Reaction to this decision . Anger, sadness, frustration. Reaction to this decision . Anger, sadness, frustration. Particular. Sadness, frustration. Particular anger at the way the Prime Minister is trying to spin this. Frankly, he is trying to spin this. Frankly, he is trying to pull the wool over people s eyes. It is not the case that simply because oil and gases extracted from the north sea that automatically means it comes to the uk, much less than it comes to the uk, much less than it comes to the uk at lower prices. There is absolutely no automatic advantage to Energy Security or to the price of oil and gasp by having this Extraction Go ahead. We oil and gasp by having this Extraction Go ahead. We had the Prime Minister Extraction Go ahead. We had the Prime Minister and Extraction Go ahead. We had the Prime Minister and other Extraction Go ahead. We had the i Prime Minister and other ministers, they keep saying the same thing, this is absolutely clearly about providing Energy Security . Just because they providing Energy Security . Just because they keep saying it, it doesn t make it true. Many on the other side are pointing out, as indeed, echo nor themselves have pointed out, they sent a to all mps and they said the vast majority of the oil that comes from this particular oil field will be for export. So there is absolutely nothing, unless rishi sunak is about to renationalise the energy sector, there is nothing in this proposal that guarantees Energy Security, it guarantees that the oil and gas will come to the uk. It will simply get sold on International Markets are global prices. But what it will do is completely smash any credibility that the uk has for any last vestige of climate leadership. We know we are running absolutely in the face of the advice from the climate scientist, the government s own advisers, the International Energy agency, from everybody he was saying if this goes ahead it is bad news for the climate. J if this goes ahead it is bad news for the climate. If this goes ahead it is bad news for the climate. I will come back to that point. For the climate. I will come back to that point. But for the climate. I will come back to that point. But i for the climate. I will come back to that point, but i want for the climate. I will come back to that point, but i want to for the climate. I will come back to that point, but i want to go for the climate. I will come back to that point, but i want to go back. For the climate. I will come back toj that point, but i want to go back to the point where you said 90 or so of this oil would be exported, because equinor, who have a stake in this license responded to what you said on the radio this morning. I want to play that for our viewers. So thats simply incorrect. We will be using the majority of that oil in the uk. So im not quite sure where the fact around 90 of the oil is going to go outside of the uk. Are you saying this oil is not going to be sold on the International Markets . Is it possible to say it is only going to be sold in the uk, is that legal . I wouldnt say its only going to be in the uk, i think it will serve quite a few years until the field will be fully developed, but ultimately this is a uk field that will be producing both oil and for the uk. Uk field producing oil anger is for the uk . He Uk Field Producing Oil Anger is for the uk . , , Uk Field Producing Oil Anger is for theuk . ,. ,. ,. , the uk . He is simply wrong and on that same news the uk . He is simply wrong and on that same news bulletin, the uk . He is simply wrong and on that same news bulletin, you i the uk . He is simply wrong and on that same news bulletin, you had l that same news bulletin, you had dale vince absolutely agreeing that he is wrong. You had the Energy Intelligence unit making the point that the man is simply wrong. What i said on the today programme this morning, 90 of the resources of rosebank are oil and around 80 will be exported. Nothing i have heard since convinces me otherwise. The letter from since convinces me otherwise. The Letterfrom Equinor in my e mail box, as an mp telling me the vast majority of that oil is going to be exported. Majority of that oil is going to be exorted. ,. , exported. Final point, we will be usin oil exported. Final point, we will be using oil anger exported. Final point, we will be using oil anger until exported. Final point, we will be using oil anger until 2050, i using oil anger until 2050, exploiting our resources until then, doesn t that make sense . In terms of the labour opposition, their position, which means they will not revoke this license and they keep stressing the need for stability and certainly and they will not unpick this either . Can you stop referring to it as ours. I made the case, it l to it as ours. I made the case, it is no more hours than anybody else s oil anger is unless we renationalise the energy system. Labour has made a mistake and they will come under such pressure. Keir starmer has it within his gift right now to say loudly and clearly, if you were to become the Prime Minister, he would move heaven and earth to stop this oilfield going head. If he would say that, the Chilling Effect it would have could stop this from happening. The idea he has this in his gift and wouldn t use it, is irresponsible.
