Days of intense violence. Inside gaza, it looks every bit as if palestinians are feeling the full force of Israeli Military power. Israel says hamas is responsible for the suffering of gazas civilians. And its retaliation for the hamas attack is only just begun. Hamas has threatened to start killing its israeli hostages. The air strikes rolled on, hour after hour. Palestinian armed groups, undeterred, kept up their own barrage of israel. 0ur bbc team was in ashkelon in southern israel, not far from the gaza border when a salvo came in. Ashkelon is so close to gaza that there is no more than a ten second warning. Israel is moving in more fire power. The next stage of the offensive against hamas looks certain to be a Ground Offensive, much bigger than other incursions since hamas took over in gaza in 2007. Lines of cars outside a Military Base on the road to gaza were parked by reservists as they reported for duty, getting ready, saying their goodbyes. Parents came to the base for a few minutes with their sons. We are praying and hope for the best. Amidst tough times now. And we are telling him to try and concentrate on his mission, without thinking too much about other friends that got injured or killed. Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu broadcast to his nation. Translation he said hamas has made a mistake of historic proportions. We will, he said, be exacting a price that we be remembered by them and other enemies for decades. And now israelis are waiting for the government and army to act. Sderot, the israeli town close to gaza littered with the debut with the debris of war felt like the essence of israels trauma, almost deserted except for forces. Hamas has rocketed sderot for years but has never before stormed in. At the centre of the hamas Killing Ground was the police station. They broke in and used it as a fire base to shoot civilians as well as soldiers. Blood from israels dead and wounded smears the walls. Even here in what is always a front line town, for israelis, this was not supposed to happen. They expected their military, backed up by the intelligence services, to protect them. And the fact that that didnt happen means recriminations about who might be responsible have already started. But at the same time there is a strong sense of national unity, with a country under attack, about what happens next. In the places that hamas attacked Israeli Military as well as the few civilians left are jumpy, still shocked. A Ground Offensive didnt feel imminent. And in gaza, a few miles away, casualties come into the main hospital. The first few hundred of many more. It will get worse. Palestinians and israelis once more caught on the anvil of war in a conflict a century old that is as deadly it has ever been. Jeremy bowen, bbc news, ashkelon. Getting into gaza is incredibly difficult and dangerous. My colleague, rushdi aboualouf, is there now. Its not safe for him to broadcast live at the moment, so he sent this update. This is by far the biggest ever israeli air strikes in gaza, on this scale, in this intensity. This is the biggest. In this building, its a Seven Storey Building where 20 to 30 families, they live in this building. I could hear the screaming of the kids, they were shouting. In the background, if you can see, its totally black. Most of the Electricity Supplies in gaza are not functioning, internet is down in every corner of this city. Talking about the humanitarian situation, gaza has been suffering for three days without electricity. The crossings, most of the crossings are closed except the rafah crossing with egypt, and it only allows people to go in and out no goods. No fuel is coming, no medicine for hospitals. The Health Ministry issued a Statement Today warning that within 48 hours the essential medical supplies are running out in the hospital. Nearby explosion and they need urgent supplies to be able to provide services to many people. I could hear in the background israeli fighter jets are still flying overhead and targeting places between time to time and it seems that this night, the palestinians in gaza have never seen before. Raphael poch, who is a spokesperson for united hatzalah, israels National Volunteer ems organisation, told me about the situation there. It has been chaos which has been later turned into organisation and balance. Saturday morning we were all awoken around half past six in the morning with the attacks starting in the Gaza Periphery, then the Rocket Barrages through central israel, and the jerusalem corridor, expanding further north as well. As the rockets were fired at Israel Hundreds of people were killed, captured, kidnapped, atrocities and horrors is really what we were facing at the beginning. A number of our volunteers were even injured, one was killed while trying to save lives of other people who were injured, they were killed by her Master Terrorists who penetrated into israel. Very quickly we organised a number of our organisation, 7000 volunteers in israel who dropped what they were doing whatever there is emergency, they respond in less than three minutes, medical emergencies. We are used to dropping whatever were doing and responding to emergencies at hand and we have brought in 1500 volunteers from across the country to the Gaza Periphery to provide relief and humanitarian medical services, to civilian and Military Personnel who are injured in the attacks. Thats been ongoing, continuing since saturday morning and our teams are still there, bringing new volunteers to replace them who are tired who want to go home. And they returned a couple of hours later to continue to provide treatment. Weve set up medical clinics in the periphery, transported patients out, so far we have treated over 1500 people. We have transported them by helicopter and ambulances. After stabilising them on the field, transported to skittles in central and Southern Europe as well, wherever they could be taken. We are doing everything we can, sometimes going to home and homes and towns were people are told not to leave or as of the houses because it is too dangerous, bring food, water and medical supplies. Dangerous, bring food, water and medicalsupplies. Its dangerous, bring food, water and medical supplies. Its a bit of whats going on here. There is the home front facing continuous Rocket Barrages, we had a siren a few hours ago, a rocket unfortunately landed in the town next to us and we had to go to respond that were number of people were injured. It is a continuing conflict and unfortunately it seems like its only escalating at this point. We are doing the best we can to provide humanitarian aid and medical service to everyone who needs it. Who needs it. You see is an ongoing who needs it. You see is an ongoing conflict who needs it. You see is an ongoing conflict and who needs it. You see is an ongoing conflict and it who needs it. You see is an ongoing conflict and it is, i who needs it. You see is an ongoing conflict and it is, a | ongoing conflict and it is, a situation which is rapidly unfolding as we track it. How are you preparing for the potential of a longer conflict as that is the prime apprehension at the moment . How first needs are apprehension at the moment . Hm first needs are really purchasing more medical equipment. We run out of a lot of reserves already in the first couple of days of the conflict because of the massive amount of people we have to treat. In addition to the regular medical Emergency Response across the country, so we are having a campaign with people and support us, by our website, rescueisrael. Org. This is a non domination, we are treating jews, muslims, christians, everyone in israel who needs it and we have volunteers from all the nominations as well and we are working to save lives so the better equipment we have, the better equipment we have, the better we can help the populace and the injured and get them to hospital as quickly as possible, and them more lives we can say. As weve heard, hamas warned on monday night that it will start executing Israeli Citizens held captive much of the activity has centred around ashkelon at the border with gaza where anna foster sent this report. Forthe it will kill someone held captive. For the families desperate for news, fears are growing. Yolande knell, bbc news, tel aviv. A major Focus A Majorfocus on a major focus on the ground is how and whether israel will undertake a Ground Offensive with the Prime Minister promising to use enormous force, and hamas warning it could kill the more than hundred hostages left. So how might Israeli Forces be planning for a long large scale operation . We have the former deputy chief of the top Special Forces unit in israel and he joins us live from miami. Thank you for your time on newsday. As a former commando in the Israeli Special forces, former commando in the Israeli Specialforces, you have Special Forces, you have undertaken specialforces, you have undertaken many difficult musicians, many still classified of course but you did for example lead the assault team to rescue hostages held on a bus in the 1980s was the powder is the challenge here for Israeli Special forces compared to previous incidents . Thank you for having me, and thank you for covering this Human Tragedy over the day. So what is probably not clear to the audience is that, in military affairs, there are different types of battle. You quite differently in urban territory, in a forest, in the desert, and hostage rescues are completely different mode of battle, whereby the priorities are very different. Typically, the whole idea is to accomplish your goal while maintaining the integrity of yourforce. Your goal while maintaining the integrity of your force. In other words, integrity of your force. In otherwords, Making Integrity of your force. In other words, making sure that your people are not heard. When your people are not heard. When you are going to rescue hostages, what becomes the number one priority is rescuing the hostages. At a great sacrifice for the force that is supposed to free the hostages. And if you get into the details of that, that basically changes the whole setup of the forces that are supposed to rescue the hostages. Now, if you combine a hostages. Now, if you combine a Hostage Rescue Situation within an environment that is still in the area or in the context of battle, then you basically have two conflicting forces. On one hand, and by the way, just so its clear, i am not currently connected to the military forces, i dont know their plans. And sitting in the United States, im just speaking here in theory, and answering your very tactical question. So the challenge is how to know enough about where the hostages are, and how to time the assault such that you can at one time break into wherever they are being held and save as many of them as possible. What confuses the situation here is that this is not happening within israel. You hostages are being held, lets call it abroad, in an area that is not under israeli control, and thats going to make it immensely difficult for whoever is trying to save the hostages. 50 whoever is trying to save the hostages hostages. So how are they likely to hostages. So how are they likely to go hostages. So how are they likely to go about hostages. So how are they likely to go about it . Hostages. So how are they| likely to go about it . Israel is known to place value on rescuing hostages and priority and prisoners but are there bigger Strategic Military factors at play . Bigger Strategic Military factors at play . Well, if we take two factors at play . Well, if we take two steps factors at play . Well, if we take two steps back factors at play . Well, if we take two steps back and i factors at play . Well, if we| take two steps back and we factors at play . Well, if we take two steps back and we just think about what is unfolding in front of us, and we just take a perspective that we dont side with anybody, then we ask ourselves, why is this happening . Who stands to gain anything from this . Clearly, the palestinians are not, nor are the israelis, so we hope that at this point in time when Decision Makers need to decide what is next, they are asking themselves, where are we going with this, what are worthy objectives, and within the overall worthy objectives, the question is how do we save the hostages in what is the best way of doing that . Now clearly a reality whereby from the israeli perspective close to 1000 people, mostly civilians, have already died, that changes the equation, with regard to whatever number of hostages that still need to be saved, i would assume, its very hard to say that, theres probably larger perspectives and broader goals with yonder the hostages, and that needs to be weighed. Right. If we pull out and really get a macro picture, we have seen tension along the Israel Lebanon border as well, in your opinion, what are the risks here of a further escalation into a wider war in the region . Very briefly. Right, so im trying to give you answers that a very objective. Lets think about it. The greatest challenge israel has is about restraint of force. Clearly what is limiting israel is the concern of not using too much force. And i am sure that israel, again, im not there, im nota decision maker, but im sure that israel doesnt want this crisis to expand. But if it is triggered by his brother in the north, im sure that it will respond and it will respond with great force. In fact, the more threatened israel will feel the more force it will use, if you think about it, its very natural. His brother. Its very natural. His brother its very natural. His brother. ~ brother. Thats all for now stay with bbc news. Hello again. Monday felt like another warm, summers day except, of course, it wasnt summer. No, its october. Its meant to be a lot colder than this. These blue, sunny skies sent temperatures soaring, particularly across england and wales the warmest spot, east malling in kent, 26 degrees celsius. Now, average for these cities at this time of the year is 15 or 16 degrees, so ten degrees above average. Even the temperatures we had on monday were in excess of what wed see in a typical july day, so thats why it felt like summer. Now, you can see the clear skies that we had across england and wales, but lurking out in the atlantic, weve got more rain bearing cloud around, and thats not good news for scotland, where we still have the bulk of the Flood Warnings in force across the nation. Its here where, of course, we saw torrential rain and flooding over the course of the weekend. And with more rain developing over the next few hours, thats not going to be exactly welcome rain that arrives. Further southwards, across england and wales, we keep those clear spells over the next few hours. One or two mist patches and a few fog patches developing, but its a mild start to the day on tuesday. I think the biggest concern, though, will continue to be this area of rain affecting scotland. In The Grand Scheme of things, 50 millimetres falling from this Weather Front over the mountains of western scotland isnt a huge amount, but given that weve got Flood Warnings already in force, the ground saturated after what fell over the weekend, then this rain could cause some further extra issues. It does trickle southwards, reaching Northern Ireland and the far north of england, as well, late tuesday afternoon. South of that, its very warm again. Once weve lost those mist and fog patches, temperatures could hit 2a degrees in the warmest spots. Now, tuesday night sees this band of rain pull away from scotland, so hopefully things will begin to improve here to a degree. Here, to a degree. But weve got some heavier rain setting in place further southwards across england and wales, and this rain band through wednesday slowly moves across wales, the midlands, into east anglia, perhaps not reaching the far south until after dark, where it will continue to be warm, with temperatures in the low 20s. But otherwise, those temperatures coming back down closer to average levels for october. Now, heading into thursday, weve got some more rain moving overnight and into friday, affecting parts of england and wales. The rain, at times, probably best sums up the weather picture. That rain clears away into the weekend, with temperatures dropping back closer to the october averages. Tension in the middle east feels fear over Oil Production as israel was my Prime Minister warns that the war has just begun. A us delegation sets the groundwork for a meeting between President Joe Biden and chinas president xijinping at the upcoming Apec Summit As Beijing tries to boost its weakened economy at home. Hello and welcome to Asia Business report. I am arunoday mukharji. Lets start with oil prices because the unfolding violence in the middle east has sent shock waves across the energy markets. Crude oil prices have been incredibly volatile on fears hostilities may escalate and destabilise the region that accounts for around a third of global oil supply. Lets try to get the latest on the numbers. The Benchmark Brent Crude currently is down by 0. 19 but that goes to show the kind of movement we have seen in oil prices as it continues to respond to the developments in the middle east. The price has spiked more than 4 after how must launched the Largest Military assault on israel in decades. The bbc s middle east correspondent shimmy husky in dubai explains why investments are nervous about a long drawn out war in the region. There are two key concerns. The first is even though israel is not a major player in oil supply, the worry is that if this conflict spreads to other parts of the region especially you run then i could have an Immediate Impact in oil prices because
