Details. Good morning. Its a huge day ahead in the Rugby World Cup. England aim to upset the odds and reach the Rugby World Cup final tonight. Theyll be hoping their second semifinal against south africa is closer than the one sided affair last night as new zealand good morning. Its saturday, 21st october. Two american hostages, who were among around 200 people captured by hamas during the groups attack on israel two weeks ago, have been freed. Judith and Natalie Raanan were released after negotiations with hamas, which is regarded as a Terrorist Organisation by the uk, in a deal brokered by qatar. It comes as calls grow for the Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza to be opened to allow aid into the territory, where key supplies are running low. Our correspondent david willis reports. Grim images captured by hamas so the moment is thatjudith and her 17 year old daughter natalie were handed over to the International Red cross after nearly two weeks in captivity. Whisked away Us Military Base in israel they spoke with President Biden on the phone is that he was overjoyed with their release. While back home in illinois, the sense of relief was palpable. film. I havent been sleeping for two weeks. Tonight im going to sleep good. I spoke with my daughter earlier today. She sounds very good. She looks very good. She was very happy. And she is waiting to come home. The International Red cross said the womens release provided what it called a sliver of hope to relatives of the roughly 200 others abducted by hamas. Meanwhile, in gaza, conditions remain dire. A convoy of trucks loaded with desperately needed supplies of food, water, and other humanitarian aid remain stuck on the egyptian side of the border as negotiations with israel drag on. What is needed is a continuous flow of aid. This is not about a i off, sending 20 trucks and then nothing. This is really a call for a continuous and safe humanitarian access with Security Conditions that allow my colleagues in gaza to do what they need to do. Our middle east correspondent Tom Batemanjoins us now from jerusalem. Tom, the International Red cross described the womens release the rilee from the one family is probable. We heard from the father a moment ago relief. Just talk about the possibilities this opens up. At this stage it is just two hostages. Yes, of course, absolutejoy yes, of course, absolute joy from their families. Yes, of course, absolute joy from theirfamilies. You heard from Natalie Raanan s father that i think this does show that there is a line of communication that there is dialogue and that hostages can be released. It has taken, of course, two weeks for two people out of more than 200 and they are 200 that are known about, to be released. But i think that President Biden talked about being overjoyed, he thanked qatar for being involved about being overjoyed, he thanked qatarfor being involved in about being overjoyed, he thanked qatar for being involved in this. Clearly there is a process. It shows when Antony Blinken and other us officials were touring the region this was obviously a key part of the discussions stop now, the question is asked, did hamas get anything in return for this . That is a very difficult question to answer, certainly the New York Times this morning reported that people familiar with the discussions say that this was effectively unconditional, that there was nothing in return. But i think it is interesting reading into the various statements around this overnight and looking to the politics of this, because hamas had already sent and are saying again it is part of their policy to release foreign nationals that are held, and there are quite a few of them only more than 200, but he said s is at a time when the Security Conditions are met. You might read into that that they are alluding to the israeli air raids, to the situation in gaza, mike krieger, speaking to the bbc overnight, so that under hamas is such under intense pressure, it is the bombardment and the current conflict that is putting hamas under pressure to release the hostages. There are certainly, think, a narrative wall around all of that. But the fact remains that there clearly is a process and as natalies family themselves have said, although they overjoyed at the moment, they will keep working to get more released stop so it does raise the prospect and the possibility of further releases. Let me ask you about the humanitarian relief and the possibility of the Rafah Crossing opening. I remember yesterday you cautioned us very much about the suggestion it could be happening on friday, which people were talking about earlier in the week. Where are we with that now . What is actually happening . Weill. Week. Where are we with that now . What is actually happening . Well, it still hasnt opened what is actually happening . Well, it still hasnt opened and what is actually happening . Well, it still hasnt opened and we what is actually happening . Well, it still hasnt opened and we saw still hasnt opened and we saw antonio guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations, actually travelled to the Rafah Crossing, he stood in front of it, a Big Press Conference yesterday, and he said you know, he was telling the world that this needs to open. He said it was the difference between life and death. So there is intense pressure for it to open. One of the issues was around dust as we know that egyptian aid officials were saying they wanted an absolute guarantee that there would be a temporary pause in the israeli bombardment around that area so they could ensure that their crews were safe. That may be one of the reasons. We dont know why still hasnt opened. Again, President Biden staying overnight he still hopes it will happen in the next 25 48 hours. ,. , ~ , 48 hours. The moment, thank you very much. It is eight minutes past six. We are being brought up to date on the weather condition. Salute lee. Absolutely. The Second Red Weather Warning meaning theres a risk to life has come into force overnight in parts of Eastern Scotland, as storm babet continues to disrupt large parts of the uk. Three people are now known to have died, and hundreds of homes have been evacuated, as torrential rain and high winds are forecast across the country. Simonjones reports. Powerful enough to uproot trees, the wind and the rain have already been relentless and there is still much more to come. Further flooding relentless and there is still much more to come. Furtherflooding is expected today and some areas of scotland could see another 100 millimetres of rain, meaning lives could be in danger. Please do listen to the advice that is being given by all the local partners, by our Emergency Services and by the government. If you are in those worst impacted areas under the red warning, there is a potential risk to life, so do not travel. Stay at home, or if you are told to evacuate, then please evacuate. Brecon was under its second red alert in as many days, and the local council has said it is prepared to ask for Military Support if the situation worsens dramatically. Many people remain in temporary accommodation. I dont know if were going to get back into the house today or tomorrow or the next day. I dont know nobody has said. John cavanagh is now staying with relatives, but fears what further damage may be caused today. Its totally unforgiving. And you see it on the television, but its not until youre standing at the wall or at the river, and you remember what it looks like normally, and you see theres a huge volume of water. It really is quite scary, the kind of destructive potential of it. This Weather Warning Map tells the story. The red alert for North East Scotland came in at midnight. Other met Office Warnings for wind and rain covering huge swathes of scotland, england and wales have been in place overnight, babet already claimed at least three lives. Chesterfield was one of the areas worst hit in england, leading to a Major Incident being declared in derbyshire, along with South Yorkshire and suffolk. We know the effects of heavy rainfall and flooding can be devastating. People have lost their lives. That is why we do encourage people to stay away from floodwater. Dont drive through, dont enter it, and keep yourself safe. And keep yourself safe. Getting around wont and keep yourself safe. Getting around wont be and keep yourself safe. Getting around wont be easy. And keep yourself safe. Getting around wont be easy. Leeds i and keep yourself safe. Getting around wont be easy. Leeds bradford airport will remain closed until at least mid morning. Thats after a plane skidded off the runway. And it said to be a challenging weekend on the railways. Several parts of the network are blocked because of flooding. The cleanup operation wont be quick. But for the moment, the warning is storm babet is not dumb with us yet. Simonjones, bbc news done with us yet. Were joined now by our reporter ben philip who is in brechin, where hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes. Good morning to you. Thats right. Good morning. It has been 24 hours since the River South Esk here in Brechin Burst is banks leading to widespread flooding in this area. We saw dramatic scenes yesterday people being rescued from their homes by boats and still storm babet s relentless rain continued overnight and into this morning. This Morning Police arent allowing us down to river street, which runs alongside the river, they say it is for our safety. One officer described it as a scene of carnage because one of part of the Flood Defences has crumbled away overnight. At midnight, as you say, a new red Weather Warning for angus and aberdeenshire came into effect. It is expected to rain all day today and that warning is in place until midnight tonight and there are several Amber Warnings midnight tonight and there are several Amber Warnings in other areas of scotland, including the highlands, perthshire, and the Scottish Borders as well. Combine this with the extremely high winds, as all adding to the disruption and misery of people who have been impacted. Is going to rain a lot more today, there is a lot more rain and wind to come and expert so that even when the rain eventually stops, it might stop tomorrow, before because looks a bit better, and could be a while until the river levels return to normal. So we could get a lot worse before it gets better. , ~ ,. ,. Better. Thank you very much. Then phili in better. Thank you very much. Then philip in brechin. Better. Thank you very much. Naga, storm babet has had that people being given. Naga, storm babet has had that impact people being given. Naga, storm babet has had that impact on people being given. Naga, storm babet has had that impact on england as well. If you look at the number of Flood Warnings employees there are 358 in total, that means flooding is probable for homes and businesses and entire communities could be affected. Chesterfield is one of the worst hit, im told around 400 houses are uninhabitable. Around 60 people were offered places at a Rescue Centre. Of course on will have taken up offers from family and friends, but that was available because they had to be evacuated. One of those residents, told the bbc it raining so heavily it was up to his waist within minutes, around two inches of rain in 24 hours. The fire and rescue service declared it a Major Incident. That threat is still here. The other warnings are in place for rain and wind. You can see over my shoulder a number of roads are still closed. There are diversions in place. So the advice appears to be from Police Forces not to travel if it isn t absolutely necessary. This isn t over yet and they want people to be prepared, check the Environment Agency advice line, check the met office mornings, look at the bbc website and, of course, check on whether the area could be impacted by flooding. Check on whether the area could be impacted by flooding. Thank you very much. The British Medical Association says it has agreed to hold talks with the government about the Junior Doctors pay dispute in england. The red warning is through to about midnight. The rain has been petering out across england and wales, becoming across northern and Eastern Scotland. There is some wintriness there over the kane cornes. Pretty similar areas to the other red warning areas, angus and aberdeenshire. Another Amber Warning for northeast of the highlands as well. That could get worse before it gets better. But it gets better. But a chilly night tonight across the board. Single figure values, largely clear skies for many. Part two of the week and what a difference. The low pressure eventually pulls away and we are in between Weather Systems and a ridge of high pressure. A quieter day. A chilly start to sunday, but a bright day with plenty of sunshine around. A couple of showers in northern and Western Areas and the strong winds and showers will pull away from the far north of scotland and the northern isles. A better day for the north and east of scotland but still chilly. Temperatures 10 16 celsius. The brief settled spell doesn t last as we head into next week, with further low Pressure System moving in. One on monday and tuesday. It was never a contest really with the all blacks getting three first half tries, as they chase their dream of winning this world cup, for a record fourth time. Memories of their opening day defeat to france, when many were writing them off, banished into history as willjordan got a hattrick, showing why he s the tournament s leading scorer. The england v south africa rivalry is notjust confined to the rugby as the two nations also meeting at the Cricket World Cup in mumbai later this morning, including ben stokes set to return. Meanwhile, one of their rivals for a semi final spot australia kept their world cup dreams alive by beating pakistan for their second straight victory. Their Opening Partnership of david warner and Mitchell Marsh laid the groundwork for an impressive win, warner reaching 163, with marsh following with 121. And it was his 32nd birthday as well a nice way to celebrate. Just one run away from equalling australia s highest ever stand for any wicket at a world cup. Pakistan did threaten to make a comeback but when Mohammad Rizwan fell to adam zampa, australia closed out the game to win by 62 runs. Domestic football is back today after the international break. Together with the military they have invested hugely in surveillance on their enemies, including a high tech border wall with gaza, which didn t work. Israeli planners failed to correctly assess the dangers on the southern border. It s been described as a failure of imagination. This Major General was israel S National Security chief that we give so much credit to the intelligence, whether it is said explicitly or not to our soldiers, the soldiers began to understand if there is a threat, some imminent threat, then the intelligence would probably let them know in advance and if such an Early Warning is not delivered to them, it means that there is probably nothing. Israel has recently spent over 1 billion trying to secure the border with gaza. It was supposed to be one of the most advanced defensive barriers in the world. As well as high fences, barbed wire, and concrete barriers, above and below ground, there are watchtowers dotted along the whole line, they are loaded with cameras, radios, alarms, and automatic response weapons. The whole idea was that the system, known as the iron wall, was supposed to detect and suppress attacks, both above and below ground with minimal human involvement. Each time hamas develop new weapons, israel found a response using technology. This time, though, hamas attacked in a automated manner, using both technology and brute force, both on the ground and in the air. This is footage from one of their uavs, remotely piloted drones during the surprise raid, taking out the automatic weapon on a watchtower. This happened in several locations along the border. The second thing is that if there was some Early Warning, even very low one, they have enough troops on their hands so they can tell the soldiers to sleep less and be ready. They can call some uavs and other sophisticated weapons from the general staff and to make sure that they are ready and the fact that such a decision was not made, i believe this is the biggest mistake and even bigger than the mistake of the intelligence. The first one is, of course, to carry out a large scale Ground Operation and to try to occupy or conquer everyplace in gaza and clean every tunnel and building and position. But i m not sure that this is the best possible option. The best of the better courses of action is to do what we began to do. How do you protect the civilians and also allow israel to respond the way it wants to respond to and their attacks against it . Diplomats in europe and the us are working on this issue in particular, trying to figure out what can broker between the israeli stated objective of Decimating Hamas so it can never attack israel this way and also protecting Palestinian Civilians. Backtrack how realistic is it, do you think i do expect egypt to take in all these palestinians from gaza that israel is asking it to . As you know, that is a long standing thing that egypt hasnt wanted to do for a long time. Because there are concerns on the egyptian side, just as there are on the palestinian side, that the displacement would be not temporary, but would become something that is long term and permanent. So up until now, the egyptian leadership doesnt seem to be at all open to that option but there is a lot of pressure from the us, the european countries, for egypt to open that border, and allow massive amounts of Palestinian Civilians to cross over. It comes as calls grow for the Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza to be opened to allow aid into the territory, where food and water are running low. Just in the last few minutes there are reports coming through from the us embassy in israel that the Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza could be opened this morning and that would allow aid into the territory. We know food and water are running low. A social media has possess proposed by the embassy thanit possess proposed by the embassy than it has received information the crossing will open within the next hour or so. Although has said we do not know how long it will remain open forforeign not know how long it will remain open for foreign citizens to depart gaza. We will get more on that in a moment. Our correspondent david willis reports. Grainy images captured by hamas show the moment is thatJudith Raanan and her 17 year old daughter natalie were handed over to the International Red cross at the border with gaza after nearly two weeks in captivity. Whisked to a Us Military Base in israel, they spoke by phone with President Biden, who said he was overjoyed with their release. While back home in illinois, the sense of relief was palpable. Ah, i have been waiting for this moment for a long time, for two weeks. This is not about a one off, sending 20 trucks and then nothing. This is really a call for a continuous and safe humanitarian access with Security Conditions that allow my colleagues in gaza to do what they need to do. Large numbers of israeli troops are now stationed near gaza ahead of a potential Ground Offensive there, which israel says services aimed at rooting out hamas. Negotiations led by the Arab State Of Qatar paved the way forjudith and Natalie Raanans release, raising the hope that further deals with hamas night be possible. Next week sees natalies 18th Birthday and her father is hoping she will be able to celebrate at home. Im going to hug her and kiss her and its going to be the best day of my life. They posted it in the last five minutes on the social media sites. Its posted actually is what we call a security alert, but thats when they give out advice to their own citizens about movements and borders and so on. There is a longer statement on their website with we have received information that the rafah Border Crossing between egypt and gaza will open at 10am local time. That is in less ioam local time. That is in less than an hour now. Everybody is open we dont know how long it will remain open forforeign we dont know how long it will remain open for foreign citizens to exit gaza. They talk about us citizens attempting to enter egypt should expect a potentially chaotic and disorderly environment on both sides of the crossing, saying they will send out further information, the situation remains dynamic and fluid any security environment is unpredictable. This seems to be very much aimed at those foreign nationals, and there are thousands of them built up, on the gaza side of them built up, on the gaza side of them built up, on the gaza side of the Rafah Crossing who have been waiting now for two weeks, basically, for the crossing to open. Those politt palestinians awona foreign passport, this is very much aimed at them. Whether that also means that the aid will come in the other way, there is no indication of that, they are not talking about that, they are not talking about that, presumably that will be part of the same opening of the crossing. Clearly something is moving on the Rafah Crossing. The us is saying this will be potentially very disorderly and chaotic so i think we should expect those kind of things. I know you have been watching closely for us. Lets go back to the two us hostages who have been released. A mother and daughter, we saw the relief and joy of the family family. As for the issue of the other hostages, as you say, more than 200 known to be held by hamas. They include children and the elderly. Hamas have said this was a humanitarian release. The israelis are saying it has happened because they are under intense diplomatic but also military pressure, saying that that will continue. What it does show, this was brokered by qatar, which historically has mediated between israel and hamas, historically has mediated between israeland hamas, it historically has mediated between israel and hamas, it opens for further releases but obviously will be extremely challenging work. Tam. Be extremely challenging work. Tom, for the moment, be extremely challenging work. Tom, for the moment, thank you be extremely challenging work. Tom, for the moment, thank you very much. Us embassy has set in the last few minutes that the Rafah Crossing, which connects gaza with neighbouring egypt, could open in the next few hours. What we know is that convoys of trucks carrying crucial supplies acute close to the border and there have been intense negotiations to get aid through. Andrew harding spent yesterday following the aid effort in egypt. High above the egyptian desert a consignment of humanitarian aid on its way towards the besieged territory of gaza. This military plane from nearbyjordan has brought medical equipment, including bandages and syringes. Theyjoin other supplies being offloaded here in egypt, just a few kilometres from the Border Crossing into gaza. And inside gaza, more signs of growing hunger and desperation. People scrambling to buy a few remaining chickens, in crowded cities that remain entirely cut off from the outside world. No wonder there such to get this aid in. This is an operation filled with risk, the aim is to channel vast amounts of humanitarian aid into gaza through one narrow Border Crossing amid continuing israeli astros, amid genuine israeli fears that this route could be used by the enemy, hamas, to smuggle in more weapons and amid the constant risk that at any moment and Israeli Ground offensive could put a stop to all of this. But first the board itself needs to open. A logjam of over 100 trucks packed with aid still stuck on the egyptian side as negotiations drag on. Three people are now known to have died, and hundreds of homes have been evacuated, as torrential rain and high winds are forecast across the country. Simonjones reports. Powerful enough to uproot trees, the wind and the rain have already been relentless and theres still much more to come. Further flooding is expected today and some areas of scotland could see another 100 millimetres of rain, meaning lives could be in danger. And still, storm babet s relentless rain continued overnight and into the morning. Police are not allowing us down onto river street which runs alongside the river. They said it is for our safety. One officer said it was a scene of carnage because part of the flood defence has apparently washed away overnight. At midnight as we have been hearing, a new red Weather Warning came into effect. That will be in place until midnight tonight. It is supposed to rain all day today. There are also several amber Weather Warnings affecting other parts of scotland, ben up in the highlands, in perthshire and the Scottish Borders as well. The advice from authorities is if you are in these affected areas, stay at home, and dont travel unless advised to evacuate. There is a lot more rain and severe strong winds to come as well. It looks like it will be a bit drier tomorrow which will be a sigh of relief for many. But experts say even when the relentless rain eventually stops, it will take some time for the river levels to return to normal. So storm babet could still have a sting in its tail. Even the most serious cases when the nca is involved, and these are serious cases, the average sentence is four years. Adrian searle told me the reason for that is that at the moment sentencing guidelines focus on the financial impact. So how much money was stolen. Because of ash dieback and the changes in climate, so the crisis we are facing, we have a very finite amount of time that we have to do something about it. Now we know what species we have, we are taking steps and doing everything we can to try to save those species on the trees they live on and also look after the river and the rainforest itself so that it can thrive going forward. Helen briggs, bbc news, devon. We are going to revisit the situation in the middle east. Lots of news coming out. News in the last half an hour of potentially an opening of the Rafah Crossing, the crossing between egypt and israel opening this morning. There has been other news as well overnight. We have those two american hostages taken by hamas, this was during the attacks that took place on israel on 7 october. This was the moment that Judith Raanan and her 17 year old daughter natalie were released. Following negotiations with qatar, they were freed for humanitarian reasons according to hamas. You can see the images there. Us President Joe Biden has spoken to the women. This is the phone call taking place than he was overjoyed by the release. They had been among 200 people currently being held hostage by hamas. You can see on the map there, thats where the bodyis on the map there, thats where the body is between gaza and egypt. This crossing connects the gaza territory with egypt and its the only crossing which will be allowed to be open that doesnt enter from israel, of course. Embassy in israel has suggested that the crossing is set to open this morning. It has put a time on it, of around 25 minutes from now, ten oclock local time. It is said that if this crossing opens, as one of the byproducts, as opposed, it would allow foreign nationals to leave the territory. The embassy doesnt know how long it will remain open for and, of course, do remember we heard from the un, antonio guterres, at the crossing yesterday appealing for it to be opened. England will be out for revenge after losing to the springboks in the World Cup Final four years ago later, when their semi final against south africa in paris kicks off at 8pm. Thousands of england fans have decended on paris for a mouthwatering. So poor was englands form going into this tournament that there was speculation as to whether they would make it out of the group stage. Now theyve battled their way to within one game of the final, although are considered underdogs tonight. It is the semi final. I think if thatis it is the semi final. I think if that is not enough to get you up for a game i dont know what will. You are right, everyone is different. Ultimately, we do have to be on the same page and get that buzz and that feeling and everyone goes about that differently. We have over 24 hours now to do that. Everyone takes their own different times, but for me there is no better place we would rather be than the semi final against south africa. Rather be than the semifinal against south africa. Everyone really hoping against south africa. Everyone really hoping that against south africa. Everyone really hoping that the against south africa. Everyone really hoping that the second i really hoping that the second semi final is less one sided than the first one last night. As new zealand booked their place in the World Cup Final, sweeping aside argentina 44 6, in paris. South africa wouldnt really mind. It was never a contest really, with the all blacks getting three first half tries, as they chase their dream of winning this world cup, for a record fourth time. She remembered this. Willjohn got a hat trick last night showing why he is the tournaments leading scorer. The england vs south africa rivalry is notjust confined to the rugby as the two nations, are also meeting at the Cricket World Cup in mumbai later this morning and the big news for england is that ben stokes set to return. Meanwhile, one of their rivals for a semifinal spot, australia kept their hopes alive, by beating pakistan, for their second victory running. The win was built on two centuries, from david warner and birthday boy Mitchell Marsh. They were just one run away from equalling australias highest ever stand for any wicket at a world cup. So close, but it still provided the platform for their huge total of 367 9. Pakistan had already chased a world cup record total of 345 against sri lanka earlier in the tournament, but fell short of repeating the feat here, losing by 62 runs. Domestic football is back today after the international break. In fact, it should have been back last night, but rotherham vs ipswich fell victim to the weather due to flooding around the ground. But today what a way for the Premier League to return. Its the Merseyside Derby this lunchtime. Such is the history and passion of this rivalry, that sometimes it does get too heated and this fixture that has seen more red cards than any other, in Premier League history. Liverpool are big favourites, with everton down in 16th, but the liverpool boss says we should ignore his record ofjust one defeat in 17 derbies. We dont think about these kinds of things, about records in these kinds of things, but that they are really ready for the game. We understand the importance of the game. We understand the pressure, who comes up understand the pressure, who comes up with it, thats how it is. And cant remember one moment when i said, oh, were to start being overjoyed at that thought. Next to a surprise in the sunshine of texas, as charles leclerc, snatched Pole Position, ahead of the us grand prix, tomorrow. Just a few days after celebrating his 26th birthday, leclerc produced his best lap late on in qualifying to seal his third Pole Position of the season, Pipping British Duo Lando Norris and lewis hamilton. Max verstappen had gone fastest but saw his lap deleted, going wide and off the track. The three time World Champion will start five places below leclerc in sixth. The bbc apologises for equating pro Palestinian Protesters with supporters of hamas. And congress is a wraps up in aberdeen. It should the conferences have been broadcast live and in full . Last weekend saw a number of big demonstrations around the uk in support of the palestinians. They were prompted by israeli airstrikes on the gaza strip which themselves with the result of unprecedented attacks by hamas on civilians in southern israel the previous weekend. On the bbc news channel on monday morning a script writer made the mistake of equating support for the palestinians with support for the palestinians with support for the palestinians with support for hamas which is classified as a terrorist group by britain and many other governments. Here in the uk Prime Minister rishi sunak visited a Jewish School in london to underline his support for the community. The visit followed several demonstrations across britain during which people voiced their backing for hamas, which many countries, including the uk and us, consider a Terrorist Organisation. Doctorjohn carmen wrote to us, saying he wanted the Party Conferences televised as they happen. He is an associate professor at the school of history and cultures at the university of birmingham and hejoins us from that city. Welcome to newswatch. Used to enjoy watching the live coverage. What is your concern about the coverage now from Party Conferences . My coverage now from Party Conferences . My main concern is that these are an important part of our national democracy. We are running up to what will be a significant General Election and it is quite clear that within each party there are divisions and strains that are playing out as well. I noticed that, you know, the liberals at the labour party had voted by the members that went against their leadership. And policies. And it would have been really good for people to be able to see that live and see how that is playing out. And the labour. Because i looked on the news website to see how i could get, you know, access to what was going on in the conferences and directed me to the webpages. And it struck me that that is really treating our National Politics almost like a sort of niche interest, ratherthan politics almost like a sort of niche interest, rather than something that is central to what we of central concern to all of us. And it seemed to me that, you know, broadcasting live, which is what you used to do, would be both valuable and also an essential component in informing people about, you know, our National Politics are playing out. Politics are playing out. Presumably used to watch politics are playing out. Presumably used to watch it politics are playing out. Presumably used to watch it live politics are playing out. Presumably used to watch it live on politics are playing out. Presumably used to watch it live on bbc used to watch it live on Bbc Parliament channel. I am going to read you what the bbc have told us. We spoke to senator editorial managers and they are tied up with the by elections so they couldnt come on the programme today. The bbc brought are from the scottish and welsh parliaments, rather than from the Party Conferences. They give us a statement about providing coverage and analysis of the Party Conferences across output. So what they are saying is, across the range of output, you will get lots of coverage about what was important from the conferences. Does that satisfy you . It important from the conferences. Does that satisfy you . That satisfy you . It doesnt really. You aet that satisfy you . It doesnt really. You get more that satisfy you . It doesnt really. You get more from that satisfy you . Bbc commentary is always very expert and im sure, you know, deciding in advance what would be the important bits of the conference and what wont be so important is going to be difficult. But the chances to see the debates, particularly those where the membership go against what the leadership would prefer them to do is really indicative of what is going on in the party and gives an insight into how things will play out if they are elected into government. A warning of more flooding communities in scotland prepare as a second danger to life alert comes into effect three people have died since storm babet Hit The Uk On Thursday Leaving Hundreds of homes evacuated and causing widespread disruption on roads and railways hi there, good morning to you. Well, well continue with the very heavy rain and strong winds across the north and the east of scotland. The met office have renewed their top tier red warning for rain throughout the day today, so were likely to see further flooding here. Elsewhere, its a gradual improvement. Join me later, ill have all the details. England fans flock to paris, hoping to see their side upset the odds and reach the Rugby World Cup final tonight. Theyll be hoping this second semi final against south africa is closer than the one sided affair last night as new zealand swept aside argentina. Its saturday 21st october. Two american hostages, who were among around 200 people captured by hamas during the groups attack on israel two weeks ago, have been freed. Judith and Natalie Raanan were released after negotiations with hamas, which is regarded as a Terrorist Organisation by the uk in a deal brokered by qatar. There are reports the Rafah Crossing between egypt and gaza could be opened this morning to allow aid into the territory, where food and water are running low. More on that in a moment. First, our correspondent david willis reports. Grainy images captured by hamas show the moment thatJudith Raanan and her 17 year old daughter natalie were handed over to the International Red cross at the border with gaza after nearly two weeks in captivity. Whisked to a Us Military Base in israel, they spoke by phone with President Biden, who said he was overjoyed by their release. Whilst back home in illinois, the sense of relief was palpable. Ive been waiting for this moment for a long time. For two weeks. I havent been sleeping for two weeks. Tonight im going to sleep good. I spoke with my daughter earlier today. She sounds very good. She looks very good. She was very happy. And shes waiting to come home. The International Red cross said the womens release provided what it called a sliver of hope to relatives of the roughly 200 others abducted by hamas. Meanwhile, in gaza, conditions remain dire. A convoy of trucks loaded with desperately needed supplies of food, water and other humanitarian aid remains stuck on the egyptian side of the border as negotiations with israel drag on. What is needed is a continuous flow of aid. This is not about a one off, sending 20 trucks and then nothing. This is really a call for a continuous and safe humanitarian access with Security Conditions that allow my colleagues in gaza to do what they need to do. Large numbers of israeli troops are now stationed near gaza ahead of a potential Ground Offensive there, which israel says is aimed at rooting out hamas. Negotiations led by the Arab State Of Qatar paved the way forjudith and Natalie Raanans release, raising the hope that further deals with hamas might be possible. Next week sees natalies 18th Birthday, and herfather is hoping shell be able to celebrate at home. Im going to hug her and kiss her, and its going to be the best day of my life. David willis, bbc news, washington. Our middle east correspondent tom bateman joins us now from jerusalem. Good morning. What we are going to do is show live pictures of the crossing at rafah and the reason we are looking at this, you can explain more, this message has come from the us embassy, important to make that clear, saying that crossing may open on saturday morning. Firstly to get desperately needed aid and firstly to get desperately needed aid and relief into gaza. Gaza is running aid and relief into gaza. Gaza is running out aid and relief into gaza. Gaza is running out of water, as the israeli siege running out of water, as the israeli siege around it continues on the bombardment continues so hospitals need fewer, desperately need medicines and supplies, people are reduced medicines and supplies, people are reduced to medicines and supplies, people are reduced to drinking dirty water, sewer reduced to drinking dirty water, sewer line reduced to drinking dirty water, sewer line water, salt water, still coming sewer line water, salt water, still coming out sewer line water, salt water, still coming out of taps, drinking dirty water coming out of taps, drinking dirty water from coming out of taps, drinking dirty water from agricultural was for ekampie water from agricultural was for example. The assumption is these issues were connected, if some people foreign passport connected, if some people foreign passport holders could come out, the aid convoys passport holders could come out, the aid convoys could go in but it appears aid convoys could go in but it appears from these images at the moment, appears from these images at the moment, not management. That is obviously the hope and we have that is obviously the hope and we have had that is obviously the hope and we have had the red cross saying this offers have had the red cross saying this offers a have had the red cross saying this offers a sliver of hope to the other families offers a sliver of hope to the other families of offers a sliver of hope to the other families of hostages now because weve families of hostages now because weve had families of hostages now because weve had the first releases and you had from weve had the first releases and you had from the familys earlier speaking of the joy about this. They were handed over to the red cross in gaza and were handed over to the red cross in gaza and taken to a crossing point for an gaza and taken to a crossing point for an israeli Brigadier General in charge for an israeli Brigadier General in charge of for an israeli Brigadier General in charge of Hostage Affairs took them, they appeared well and they will be reunited they appeared well and they will be reunited with their families later. These are live images from the crossing point at rafah. Just over an hour ago we heard from the us embassy in israel that the gaza egypt border may open suggesting that there could be an opportunity both to move in humanitarian aid, you will have heard lots about that over the past few days but the possibility for some us citizens, the us embassy speaking, to leave gaza and these live images suggest, we have been watching closely, there is some movement occurring. The vehicles you can see nearer the camera in the last few minutes just approached and then stopped and you can see clearly there is some form of checking going on, the first vehicle in that line. Vehicle in that line. What we understand vehicle in that line. What we understand is vehicle in that line. What we understand is that vehicle in that line. What we understand is that joe vehicle in that line. What we understand is that joe biden| understand is thatjoe biden brokered a deal a couple of days ago which meant although there are dozens of trucks waiting with eight of the border between egypt and gaza, to allow 20 trucks with aid, humanitarian aid to enter gaza, we understand electricity is in very short supply, Water Supplies are a real concern with people being forced to drink saline water, dirty water and food supply is very, very low. These trucks desperately needed but what we understand, we can only go with what we can show you and this is the crossing. We can seek those trucks as we pan out, we cannot confirm, what is in those trucks but they will be checked at the border so for humanitarian aid. We are talking about a trucks loaded with medicine, supplies, crucial supplies to enter gaza. This is the only crossing that will be opened at this moment in time. This isjust to make clear not a crossing that goes into israel, it is between egypt and gaza. Lute into israel, it is between egypt and gaza. ~ ~ , i, i into israel, it is between egypt and gaza. ~ ~ ,i, i , i, gaza. We will keep a close eye on that this morning. Gaza. But you can clearly see there has been a significant change. It was expected and it may happen on friday, but we will be watching closely on the border to see what actually occurs. It is 80 minutes past eight. We promised you that we would have a look at the weather. Read whether alerts were parts of scotland is storm babet but as the country . That is right. Another day of heavy and persistent rain for north and Eastern Scotland, improving elsewhere but the met office have a the red warning for Eastern Scotland from angers into aberdeenshire for this persistent and heavy rain. Here it is on the radar over the last few hours. The rain across england and wales is fizzling out, heavy for the next hour or so and then it is this what you see the intensity of the rain and snow over the tops of the cairngorms. An Amber Warning for the North Highlands but this is the area we are most concerned about, Amber Warning from aberdeenshire into peshawar. Perthshire. The red warning is in force until around midnight tonight. It looks like the rentals away from the east of scotland becoming confined to the highlands so condition slowly improving. Further south, highlands so condition slowly improving. Furthersouth, lots of sunshine, south scotland and northern ireland, wales, western england since the sunshine again, vastly better than what we had yesterday and some showers pushing into eastern england. Runs across northern and Eastern Scotland, chilly on the north, malta in the east and the south east. Finally the rain pulling away from the north of scotland so drier conditions with some showers for western scotland, the odd shower elsewhere. Chilly night to come with single figure targets, light winds and we seat must unfold because we have had so much rain on the ground is saturated. On sunday between Weather Systems, betterforall saturated. On sunday between Weather Systems, better for all areas, storm babet precious to the north of scotland so we can see some sunshine, northern and Eastern Scotland and flood conditions remaining severe, could be for the next couple of days so they are not out of the woods yet but look to the sky, plenty of sunshine, blue sky for sunday, light winds. Chilly across the board, 11 15. That does not last, into next week low Pressure Systems moving across the uk bringing that weather but the difference with things they will be more mobile, nothing to quicker whereas storm babet remains in situ across the uk for days bringing relentless rain. Unsettled threat next week, not raining all the time, drier and brighter moments in between low Pressure Systems but it will remain pretty autumnal with values, pretty akin for the time of year. A nice fine day to come for the second part of the weekend into next week that way back into rain and sunshine and showers. Thank you so much. We and sunshine and showers. Hollywood actor colin firth has launched a bbc lifeline appeal for the Charity Action for stammering children. It looks at the importance of giving people with a stammer time to talk when booking appointments, ordering food or using other services in day to day life. Lets take a look at the campaign. An colin firth hearing the first words a child speaks can be a memorable l ks can be a memorable experience for families. Speech is fundamental to our existence and our relationship with others. So to imagine Something Like a stammer snatching that skill away from them can be upsetting and distressing. Playing the role of george vi in the kings speech showed me not only the challenges of experiencing difficulties with speech, but also the life changing benefits specialist therapy can bring. Were joined now by phoebe avbulimen, Thomas Grattoni may and jane roberts, the chair of action for stammering children. Good morning to all of you. You are the people good morning to all of you. And here you are, sitting on our sofa, on National Television soap respect to both of you just being here and i love watching it because it is a lesson to me, phoebe, yet watching thomas and writing, and just knowing, thomas is going to say what he is going to sell but on his own time and it will work and have patience. Can you tell us about how this works in practice because you are both at university, your medical student, thomas you havejust started at university so in terms of day to day business that other people might take for granted, what is that like . 50 people might take for granted, what is that like . , i, ~ i, is that like . But for the most longer, thats all. Yeah. But for the most part and people are patient with me the most part and people are patient with me. Which i am really happy about with me. Which i am really happy about. . I. ~ with me. Which i am really happy about. , i, i, about. Lets talk about the practicalities about. Lets talk about the practicalities of about. Lets talk about the practicalities of this about. Lets talk about the practicalities of this and i about. Lets talk about the l practicalities of this and how about. Lets talk about the practicalities of this and how this campaign will work. Jane, good morning. This isjust so important and thats particularly for stammering children because and i know thomas, you have had stories, teachers or adults must interpret the stammerfor someone teachers or adults must interpret the stammer for someone being slower in the thought process for example and once those thoughts start coming in or you ascribe these characteristics it can hurt and it can damage development . Absolutely, there is no cognitive impact~ absolutely, there is no cognitive impact. Children who stammer are no less intelligent than anyone else. The social less intelligent than anyone else. The social and emotional impact, however. The social and emotional impact, however, can be profound. Sometimes, in school, however, can be profound. Sometimes, in school, teachers dont notice it because in school, teachers dont notice it because sometimes children who stammer because sometimes children who stammer might sit at the back of the class and stammer might sit at the back of the class and be very reluctant to say anything class and be very reluctant to say anything. Yet we know that if children anything. Yet we know that if children and young people have the respect children and young people have the respect and the confidence that they need, respect and the confidence that they need. That respect and the confidence that they need, that that can have a transformative effect. Also, for those transformative effect. Also, for those young people who do one intervention in the form of therapy, then the intervention in the form of therapy, then the earlier the intervention, then the earlier the intervention, the better~ then the earlier the intervention, the better. So schools play a really important the better. So schools play a really important role. Every school will have important role. Every school will have a important role. Every school will have a number of children and young people have a number of children and young people who have a number of children and young people who stammer. 8 of children in the people who stammer. 8 of children in the uk people who stammer. 8 of children in the uk stammer at some point in their lives in the uk stammer at some point in their lives lt in the uk stammer at some point in their lives. Brilliant, thank you so much. Enjoy the studies as well, best times. 8. 36. We will be back shortly. Hello, this is breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. Time now, 8. 37. Lets bring you right up to date with what is happening this morning, saturday morning. An eventful morning. The reason we are showing you this image now, in the last half an hour or so, we have seen the First Movement at the rafa Border Crossing between gaza and egypt. The rafah Border Crossing. We had being told the border for crossing. We had being told the borderfor a period of time is open. We have seen a number of vehicles approaching that Border Crossing and then moving through. The first indication that something was changing this morning came from a message from the us embassy in israel, suggesting that there was a period of Time Starting a0 minutes or so ago when there would be an opportunity for some crossing to take place between the two places. It is also thought palestinians with us citizenship might be able to leave gaza. The us embassy on its website, when it was mooted that this crossing was going to open, which is the only crossing coming out of gaza, into egypt, the us embassy in israel says it does expect a potentially chaotic and disorderly environment on both sides. We will keep an eye on this. We have Seen Movement of trucks and the key is the humanitarian aid begins to enter gaza. Lets try and find out a little bit more about this. Werejoined now by tamara alrifai, from the United Nations relief and works agency, which provides aid to palestinian refugees. A very good morning to you. Thank you for your time this morning. I just wonder what you can tell ask your understanding of what has changed this morning, if aid is getting through and what we know about that . Getting through and what we know about that . , i, i, i, i, about that . Yes, good morning and thanks for hosting about that . Yes, good morning and thanks for hosting me. About that . Yes, good morning and thanks for hosting me. We about that . Yes, good morning and thanks for hosting me. We are about that . Yes, good morning and thanks for hosting me. We are the l thanks for hosting me. We are the largest un Agency Present in gaza right now. My colleagues are still there and i am getting reports, like you are, about possibly, yes, a breakthrough this morning with a first aid convoy going into the gaza strip and now almost two weeks. Once we have full confirmation, this will definitely be a very, very good piece of news. But to go back to what you just said, you just quoted some crossing into gaza. We are calling for full crossing. Full crossing because aid should be allowed to go into the gaza strip and impeded, safely, so without being hit, targeted, bombarded, and it should be continuous. So not a one off convoy of several tracks but rather a continuous and daily access forfood, clean rather a continuous and daily access for food, clean water, rather a continuous and daily access forfood, clean water, fuel, medical supplies and various humanitarian items. Yes, because people will be aware, as you were explaining there, that as you were explaining there, that as we understand it and we are watching carefully to see what actually happens in practice, which is all that matters in these situations, there was a suggestion it would just be 20 trucks that are coming through. That is what President Biden said as he left the region, that some kind of a deal had been done. We have the practicalities and we are watching to see how it unfolds today. Give us a sense of the scale of the need relative to what we know about what is coming through. 2. 2 Million People living gaza. 1 million of them have the half the population, is displaced into shelters in our schools. So think of 1 Million People, most of them in shelters and then think 20 trucks. In any normal daily, if truly there was anything normal about gaza before the 7th Of October, over 60 of gazas population lived on food aid. That is around 500 trucks of food and fuel coming into gaza daily. So 20 trucks, good for a beginning and more of that diplomatic and political breakthrough, but as you said, for some. Forsome breakthrough, but as you said, for some. For some background, breakthrough, but as you said, for some. Forsome background, 2. 2 Million People, 20 trucks is really a drop in the ocean. I would just explain, you might be able to see the pictures we are showing as we are broadcasting this morning. What we can see, and it was not clear originally as we saw the vehicle is waiting at the border, what i think we can clearly see there are is there are trucks that are physically moving through very slowly as they are checked through. There clearly is something happening this morning that is different. When the suggestion was that this could start happening from President Biden, one of the things that they were emphasising was that it was very important that the aid that did get through should not fall into the wrong hands. It should get to the people who need it and it should not end up in the hands of hamas, who are here in the uk designated as a Terrorist Organisation. That clearly is a concern, that it can arrive but it must get to the right people and the right places . Again, we are the largest Un Organisation in gaza, on the gaza strip. We have more than half a Million People in our shelters right now and i really want to reassure every donor that our systems to filter and to ensure that we in our distribution, really target civilians, people in need. We checked people against the un sanctions list. We are extremely diligent in how we organise our aid and assistance we do it ourselves. We do not subcontract or give aid to other groups to distribute. We do it all ourselves. Are 13,000 unrwa colleagues in gaza, all of them are un staff, 13,000. They do the work themselves. Most of them are gazans, people from gaza who are in the shelters now and have been looking around, providing assistance, distributing whatever was left in our warehouses to people they now share sleeping space with. I want to remind that almost half the population is now displaced. Many of them in schools that we at unrwa run. These are schools that were not ready to become shelters but have in an impromptu way received everybody who was scared. Civilians who were looking for the un flag because they believe they will protect them. My own colleagues, 13,000 people, many of them are part of these people who are displaced and they are working around the clock to ensure that anything we do, we do it by a strictly abiding to the un values and principles. Strictly abiding to the un values and principles. Tamara alrifai, we a reciate and principles. Tamara alrifai, we appreciate your and principles. Tamara alrifai, we appreciate your time and principles. Tamara alrifai, we appreciate your time this and principles. Tamara alrifai, we | appreciate your time this morning. Tamara is from the United Nations relief and works agency. Giving us some background to the work they are doing. It is coming up to 8. A5. Good morning to you. Now, this evening. Good morning, mike. But we go to sport to see upsets. If we i go to sport to see upsets. If we knew the results, we wouldnt bother going so that should give england fans hope, that they can cause huge upset and beat south africa. Thousands of fans are flocking to paris, others are working out where they will be watching at home. Wales, ireland and scotland fans tell me they will be supporting south africa. Everyone will have their own feelings and emotions. The majority of the england team were involved four years ago, when england were favourites in the World Cup Final, but lost to south africa, so theyll be out for revenge against the reigning champions, in paris tonight, but on current form, are underdogs this time. Thousands of england fans are decending on paris for this semi final the team again hoping to silence their critics. So poor was englands form going into this tournament, that there was speculation as to whether they would make it out of the group stage. Now, they are one game from the final and are the only semi final team, who havent lost at this world cup, albeit coming through the weaker side of the draw. At least, england will be hoping to make it closer than the underdogs did last night in the first semi final, as argentina were swept side, by new zealand who booked their place in the final with a aa 6 win in paris. It was one of the most one sided semi finals ever seen, with the all blacks getting three first half tries, as they chase their dream of winning this world cup for a record ath time. Memories of their opening day defeat to france, when many were writing them off, banished into history as willjordan got a hat trick showing why hes the tournaments leading scorer. Lets get back to england and the huge test against south africa tonight. We can speak to someone we wish was there. Jack van poorfleet, the leicester scrum half, was with the england squad, until he suffered an ankle injury in the teams second warm up match back in the summer. So, jack will be following it, back home in leicester, and joins us now. I know the recovery is going well. What areas can we go after . I dont know what the plan is but im sure steve will have pulled something tactically together to expose them and get the upper hand. I think for england in this sort of type of game, i know four years ago, they didnt really fire many shots. You can feel, even when i was in camp three years after it, that there is a regret. There is the hurt from that fine. So i think they really have to go out and attack them. They have to challenge them because south africa are so good at the basics of the game, the set piece, the kicking. So if they sit back, it could be quite hard to break down and quite hard to beat. I think for me, they have to try and add some variation and attack them. I think they will properly try and use freddie steward as a bit of a weapon. Try and get him opposite the wingers because even though they are unbelievable, they are quite small and freddie with his height, they will probably try and get an advantage there and come alive off an attack. Thats what i think will happen an attack. Thats what i think will ha en i, an attack. Thats what i think will haen i, i, an attack. Thats what i think will ha en i, i, 4 i, an attack. Many of the warnings have been lifted across england and wales today but we have had a renewed red warning for Eastern Scotland. We have another train of rain which willjust be pushing into Eastern Scotland with strong winds through the course of today. This is valid until midnight tonight. The areas of most concern are angus aberdeenshire, where the rain has been piling on over the last few hours and also the North Highlands. The white you can see some wintry weather over the top of the cairngorms but as the temperatures rise over the next few hours, it will revert back to rain. This is the Amber Warning we are are concerned about. Within it, a red warning which is valid until midnight tonight. We could see another 75 100 millimetres of rain which will exacerbate the existing severe flooding problems there and we could see further flooding elsewhere. The rain continues to pile in and pushes northwards, so the North Highlands will see the heaviest of the rain as we head through the often impossible further south, south scotland, northern ireland, wales, western england, a vast improvement here with some sunshine through the day. A few showers pushing their way across eastern england. Windy across the channel and certainly across northern and Eastern Scotland but lighter winds in the spine of the country because stop temperatures from 8 16, quite chilly in the far north. The rain eventually pushes its way northwards tonight. Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze was once named the sexiest man alive, but it was his performance as a drag queen in the 1995 film to wong foo that gave him a cult following in the us. Nearly 30 years on, the tales of three drag queens in the american midwest is being re imagined for the stage. Lets take a look at some of the scenes that made the movie so popular. New york city. pay your hometown girls some homage your drag queen pageant finalists miss sheena riviera.
