This is bbc news. The headlines the israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, gives a statement saying the country is preparing for a Ground Invasion, but doing Everything Possible to bring hostages home. He encourages Israeli Citizens to carry weapons. Some aid gets into gaza, but the un warns it will have to stop its operations in gaza tonight if it runs out of fuel. The us House Of Representatives elects little known republican mikejohnson as its next speaker, breaking the three week deadlock in the chamber. And in westminster, mps vote to suspend former conservative minister peter bone after investigation found hed bullied a staff member. Hurricane otis hits southern mexico, Slamming Ashore near acapulco as a category five storm before weakening. Welcome back. More now on our main story. Next more on the war between israel and hamas and the bombardment of gaza from israel. The Hamas Run Health Ministry in gaza says more than 6,500 people have been killed since the start of the conflict. 2,704 of them are children. The bbc s gaza correspondent Rushdi Abu Alouf has remained working there, despite the conditions. He is in khan younis, in southern gaza, for us. Day after day now, we have been hearing him describe a worsening situation. He told us what things were like there today. There was a huge air strike half an hour ago, struck a three storey building about 100 or 200 metres away from this hospital. This is a hospital in khan younis, and the building is in this direction. Ive been watching smoke rise, and black smoke and dust raised out of this building. Suddenly tens of ambulances rushed to the scene and back with about 50 casualties from that building. Some of them are killed, some of them are injured. And this has, ive been like watching it all day and night as we stay here in this hospital. Like, the number of casualties arriving, about 110 people only killed in this city of khan younis. This is the place that the israeli army asked the people in gaza and the north to flee south. This is safe, but today the local authority here said, they said a third of air strikes every night are targeting this area and more than half of the people who were killed were killed in so called safe area. The hospital here is struggling to cope with the number of casualties. People were treated in the corridor, people were treated. 0perations have been conducted outside the Operation Room. And also the hospital has shut most of the nonessential departments, including the kidney dialysis department, because they want to keep what they have, a little fuel, just to run the Operation Room and the emergency department. So they said, our mission is just to say peoples lives. Anybody whos not a life threatening case, they wont deal with him. So through all the day, we are seeing people with fractures, people with bone injuries, people with minor injuries, with moderate injuries are being left in the corridors there without anybody to look after them. So this hospital is supposed to be now serving half of the population. After about 600,000 or 700,000 people displaced from the north and gaza city, and they are taking this hospital and khan younis as a whole as a refuge. 0ur our thanks to rushdie for that. One of the most scrutinised incidents in the war has been the explosion at the Al Ahli Hospital in gaza, in which hundreds are feared to have been killed. Hamas immediately accused the israelis, but the us, uk and israel subsequently blamed a rocket fired by militants from within gaza. 0ur correspondent nick beake has been working with bbc verify to establish exactly what weve learned one week on. The carnage at the Al Ahli Hospital has been one of the most scrutinised incidents since israel launched its bombing of gaza in response to the hamas attacks. So, one week on, what can we say with absolute certainty . Well, not a huge amount, but there is significant potential evidence that weve been considering here at bbc verify. Now, this is a 3d model of the hospital complex that the team has put together. You can see its a modern building with solar panels on top. The anglican church, which owns and runs the hospital, says its provided some of the most advanced medical care in the region. Hundreds of gazans were said to have been staying out in the open in these areas here, fearful of missile strikes. They were there when the site was hit. The point of impact, you can see it there in the courtyard near parked cars and those displaced families. And this crater remains the most important piece of evidence that we have. You can see its small based on the limited evidence available. None of the four experts we spoke to believed it to be from a missile that the israelis used. That wouldve made a much bigger hole, they say. Now, have a look at this photograph. This was taken on the night of the blast, and it appears to show explosive experts from gaza police inspecting the crater. Hamas later said it had been investigating, but weve not been able to find any statements about an update since then, nor any images of weapon fragments they might have recovered. All the experts weve spoken to say its unheard of for there to be no debris from a rocket or a missile strike. So what about video . Well, this video here was captured by the aljazeera network, and theres been a lot of focus on it. If we just play it through, it shows an object moving through the sky. And then shortly afterwards, there is an explosion. At this point, the camera readjusts, it pulls out. And then if we look towards the ground, we can see a big explosion, and we have verified that as being the site of the hospital. Now, a spokesman for the Israeli Defense forces held up this video as evidence during an interview with the bbc and others and said it was evidence of a misfired rocket coming from gaza, Veering Off Course and plummeting towards the hospital. But now the New York Times and some other open source investigative teams have concluded that this object in the video was, in fact, fired from within israel and exploded two miles away from the hospital, and so was not connected to the disaster. Here at bbc verify, weve looked at the various calculations, and we dont think we can be completely certain in working out or triangulating where this object came from. Other analysts believe it couldve been impossible for whatever exploded in the air to have travelled to the hospital in the specific time frame, in eight seconds. Now, one final thing. Three days before the explosion, according to the hospitals facebook page, a ward was hit by artillery. Those in charge of the place said that they had received warnings from the israelis telling them to evacuate. And here weve just stopped it they say this is the remnants of an artillery shell. Three days later, on the evening that so many people were killed, israel says it was not firing in the area around the hospital. So, one week on, and many, many details are still unclear. The us, the uk and israel insist it was a rocket from gaza that was to blame, but many in arab countries simply dont believe it. New compelling evidence may well come to light, but in the middle of such a bitter conflict, lots of people on all sides will have made up their minds long ago. Peter bone has been suspended from the House Of Commons for six weeks after being found to have committed bullying and Sexual Misconduct against a staff member and may face a by election. That leaves the Prime Minister facing another by election. Conservatives had already withdrawn the whip from him following an investigation by the parliamentary watchdog. Fora investigation by the parliamentary watchdog. For a total the bc he was repeatedly hit and screamed at which left him with ptsd and mr bohn denies the allegations. Live now to our Political Correspondent hannah miller. Talk through what happened here. Peter bone, as you said, denies the allegations that we have not heard from him in recent days. The former assistant alleges that he was hit, he was bullied. He said it was a pattern of abuse that led to him being diagnosed later on with posttraumatic stress disorder. He did not complain at the time. He said that was because it was simply too overwhelming, but then when he did complain in 2017, that led to a chain of events, quite a Stop Start Chain Of Events, quite a Stop Start Chain Of Events i have to say, that led up to today, where peter bone has now been suspended from the House Of Commons having had those complaints of bullying and Sexual Misconduct upheld against him. It means that there will now be a Recall Petition in his constituency, and that will be open for six weeks. If 10 of his constituents signed that Recall Petition, there would then be a by election, so there is potential for that to happen. Then be a by election, so there is potentialfor that to happen. He would be the tenth by election that rishi sunak woody faces becoming Prime Minister two years ago. If that all does take place and we get to the violation, us about why it is significant given the number they have been faced in the results and of them. 50 have been faced in the results and of them. ,. , have been faced in the results and of them. 1, ,. ,. , of them. 50 peter bones maority, for ive of them. 50 peter bones maority, forgive me of them. 50 peter bones maority, Forgive Me Mi of them. 50 peter bones maority, forgive me for not i of them. 50 peter bones maority, forgive me for not having of them. So peter bones majority, forgive me for not having the of them. So peter bones majority, forgive me for not having the exact number, its somewhere around 18,000 or 19,000 with ukip and the Liberal Party in second and third place in the last election. Those kind of numbers once upon a time would have been seen as being quite a safe seat, but with the by Election Results we have seen in the past week and in recent months, that very much seems like this is a very turbulent time in british politics. And even a majority that requires a very significant string is not necessarily safe for the conservative party. The labour party have already indicated that they would definitely fight quite hard for this seat. We are looking at at least a couple of months, probably two or three months, before we get to the point people actually giving out to vote and as i say there are still couple of stages that need to happen before we there. But it would be another route that rishi sunak, another whole campaign that Rishi Sunak He was a see through before we get to a general election. Thank sunak he was a seethrough before we get to a general election. Get to a general election. Thank you ve much get to a general election. Thank you very much for get to a general election. Thank you very much for that, get to a general election. Thank you very much for that, hannah. Around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. Bbc news, bringing you different stories from across the uk. Here i am in the early stages of sculpting the portrait of the queen in clay, and im surrounded by my inspiration, wall of the queen portrayed in the 1950s and early 60s. Sculptor Hywel Pratley is working on this memorial of Queen Elizabeth ii since january. From clay to wax and now to bronze, this is the next major milestone in creating the seven foot statue. Here, the ceramic shell of the queens head and other parts of the sculpture have been surrounded by sand so melted bronze heated to 1150 degrees can be poured in. When its cooled, its time for the moment of truth. Public sculpture, i think, is something so important for the well being, the cultural well being and life of the country. And to have an opportunity to sculpt the late Queen Elizabeth as my first Public Sculpture was just incredible for me. The statute is expected to go on display in the next year. Here in the uk, two metropolitan Police Officers have been sacked after being found guilty of Gross Misconduct following the stop and search of two black athletes in 2020. The Team Gb Sprinter Bianca Williams and her partner Ricardo Dos Santos, whos also a sprinter, said they were racially profiled when officers pulled over their car in west london, handcuffed them and searched them on suspicion of having drugs and weapons. None were found. Our Community Affairs correspondent Adina Campbell reports. What did i do . Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. 0k, calm down. This is the video that went viral on social media. Bianca williams and Ricardo Dos Santos are handcuffed and detained while Police Search their car for weapons and drugs. Nothing is found. Youve made a definite attempt to try and avoid us, ok, the driver has. Which makes us suspect theres something in the car there shouldnt be, ok . All of this happens while their three month old baby is crying in the back of the car. After a six week hearing, the couple say theyre disappointed only two of the five officers accused of Gross Misconduct have been sacked. Speaking exclusively to the bbc, Bianca Williams says its been a long wait. It shouldnt have taken three years to get to this result, but im happy that this is the result and this is, like i said, a huge step in the right direction for people who continue to get stopped by the police and have that same old excuse about smelling of cannabis where nothings been found. How much has all of this affected you, notjust your professional life, but also on a personal level as well . When people want to bring it up, ijust kind of, like, just change subject, because itjust fills me with so much emotion. Even now. Sorry. Its just, its just really hard. And, like, evenjust driving the car, whenever i see a police car, im always just looking. Im always, like, on edge because who knows what theyre going to do . Who knows if theyre going to follow me now . Shes now hoping for a Better Future for her son. And how did you explain to him what had happened . You know, he sees mummy and daddy on tv for running and us being happy and getting medals for our country. He doesnt expect to see us on tv in tears, being in handcuffs, pulled out of the car. Adina campbell, bbc news. Hurricane 0tis has made landfall on the coast of southern mexico, bringing wind speeds of up to 165 mph. It is the fastest intensifying east pacific hurricane on record, becoming a category five, the highest level, injust 12 hours. Take a look. It hit the Popular Beach Resort of acapulco before heading up inland toward guerrero. It has since reduced to a category two storm, but us forecasters warn it is still generating flash flooding and potentially catastrophic winds. Metereologist Matthew Cappucci gave us some clarity on how this happened. This thing lurched faster than any other Tropical Cyclone in the Eastern Pacific on record, going from a Tropical Storm to a category five in just 12 hours time. In 2a hours, its maximum sustained winds in the centre increased by 177 kilometres per hour, which is unprecedented other than patricia, which hit back in 2015. But this thing came ashore stronger as the First Pacific category five on record. And the really amazing thing with this, we neverforecast anything above a Tropical Storm. We never predicted winds over 100 kilometres per hour, none of the Weather Models did. And instead it came ashore with winds over 250 kilometres per hour. So folks who went to bed monday night expecting a run of the mill Tropical Storm were essentially devastated by a cataclysmic category five coming ashore. And i think the human impact is something we wont fully understand for weeks or months to come. Thats so interesting. Im going to pick you up, and i probably appreciate you wont have an answer to this, but this idea of not being able to predict this, do we know why that happened . The models just not sophisticated . Theres still some gaps in the data . What goes on when we just cant foresee Something Like this . So i think thats a really good question. Honestly, thats a question well be asking ourselves. It did undergo rapid intensification, which is made more likely by warmer waters and human induced climate change. But rapid intensification requires two ingredients very warm water, so around 30 33 degrees celsius, and relaxed winds in the upper atmosphere. The calmer the winds are, the less the chance somethings going to, like, knock the hurricane off kilter when its forming. We did think thered be some shear. So kind of disruptive upper level winds. It turns out that wasnt the case. My guess, however, would be that off to the north west of the cyclone, theres something called a trough, a dip in thejet stream. And i think the jet stream essentially pulled air at the upper levels away from the hurricane, evacuating the outflow, the exhaust. And the more we vacuum away at the top, the more water inflow we can suck in down bottom, intensifying the storm. Thats part of it. That said, There Stilljust has to be something were fully missing as meteorologists. And honestly, this is something well look back on for years and years to come. A uk Police Officer who incited more than 200 young girls to send him explicit pictures and videos of themselves over snapchat has beenjailed for life with a minimum term of 12 years. Lewis edwards groomed the girls, who were aged between 10 16, and forced them to send him indecent images that he secretly recorded and used to blackmail them. Our home Affairs Correspondent Daniel Sandford reports from cardiff. Are we going to find evidence of you engaging in sexual communication with children . No comment. When first interrogated by officers from his own force, pc Lewis Edwards refused to answer questions about his sexual abuse of girls as young as ten. No comment. But he later had to admit to 160 offences. Thejudge said hed psychologically manipulated his victims and jailed him for life. It is clear that he not only gained sexual gratification from his offending, but that he also enjoyed the power and control that he had over these young girls. His reaction to their distress can properly be described as cruel and sadistic. Edwards ran his cruel campaign from the front room of his parents house. He posed as a teenage boy on snapchat, befriended girls aged 10 16, and then by threatening to post their naked images online, he blackmailed them into sending him more and more explicit videos of themselves. He messaged one girl. In desperation, one 12 year old replied. But in the end, she still sent more pictures. The superintendent who oversaw the case recalls vividly the moment she discovered the suspect was a policeman. I still have goose bumps when i think about it now, because this sort of criminality in any event is just despicable, but to find out it was potentially being committed by one of your own because he was a serving Police Officer at the time makes it all the more dreadful. The court was played videos of edwards victims crying and begging him to stop, but still he asked for more pictures. For almost all of the time that he was blackmailing and abusing the girls, pc Lewis Edwards was working for south wales police. Detectives have checked his shift pattern, and, yes, he was carrying out some of the online abuse while he was on duty. Lewis edwards is the 18th officer to be jailed for child sexual abuse since january last year. Another 13 were convicted but not sent to prison, making a total of 31. More than 200 of edwards victims were tracked down by a painstaking detective work, but there are hundreds more who have not yet been identified. Daniel sandford, bbc news, at Cardiff Crown court. Announcer ladies and gentlemen, Arnold Schwarzenegger he was the body building champion that became a movie star and then the governor of california. Lets get to work. The problem, he lived in austria until the age of 19, and any us president has to be a natural born citizen. Everything that ive accomplished was because of america, so the only thing that i cant do, which is run for president , im not going to complain about that. And even on personal losses, you know like my marriage, the mistakes that ive made you have to recognise those mistakes, you have to be responsible for those mistakes. You cannot go and blame someone else for it. Take responsibility, take ownership of those mistakes that youve made, and learn from that and then come back and be a better person. Colin paterson, the strongman of bbc news. Wow. Very good. Thats it. This is bbc news, bye bye. Hello there. We did have some sunshine today through the midlands and wales in particular. The earlier heavy rain across southern parts of england cleared away, but it was rather cloudy in scotland and that cloud likely to linger into this evening and overnight. Same, too, across parts of the North East Of England with some showery outbreaks of rain, a brisk east wind. At the same time, a Weather Front moving in towards Northern Ireland bringing some heavier outbreaks of rain, also in towards wales, the south west of england. And as we approach midnight and the early hours of thursday morning, that wet weather pushing in towards the midlands, the north west of england and in towards the far south east. Temperatures here overnight, a rather chilly four degrees there in norwich. Not as cold in scotland compared with last night, and mild in the south west at around 11 celsius. Into thursday, a low pressure situated to our west once again bringing Weather Fronts, showery outbreaks of rain and some brisk winds around the South West Coast and the north and north east coast of scotland. Through the day, weve got the overnight rain continuing to track its way northwards towards the North East Of England and further showery outbreaks of rain through scotland as well. Some of this wet weather could well become fairly stagnant across eastern areas through the end of the week. Elsewhere on thursday, weve got some sunshine, but also a number of sharp showers and temperatures around 11 15 celsius. On friday once again, low pressure situated to the west, sending Weather Fronts, showery outbreaks of rain our way. There will be some brighter skies in the mix at times, too. You can see, though, certainly across parts of scotland, outbreaks of rain consistently pushing in from the north sea on those brisk east, south east winds. Elsewhere for much of england and wales, its a bright friday, plenty of sunshine around, but also a number of heavy showers. Same, too, in towards parts of the Northern Ireland. Temperatures similar. And then into the weekend, that area of low pressure still with us, so further Weather Fronts and outbreaks of rain. And at the same time, were starting to see a bit of a north wind developing, bringing some cooler conditions to the far north of scotland. At the same time, in between, weve got this area of rain, which could cause a few issues through parts of eastern scotland. Elsewhere on saturday, weve got outbreaks of rain and some sunshine through the midlands, east anglia and the North East Of England. So a rather unsettled outlook, and it stays that way through the tail end of the weekend and into the start of next week, too, with some sunshine but also showers or longer spells of rain at times. Thats the forecast. Youre watching the context on bbc news.
