The United Nations has warned that catastrophic shortages of essential goods in gaza could result in many more deaths. The head of its agency for Palestinian Refugees described the amount of aid allowed in so far as crumbs. Philippe lazzarini says basic services are crumbling, with streets starting to overflow with sewage. The Un Human Rights Office says it has warned israel that cutting off food, fuel and electricity constitutes collective punishment. The World Food Programme was relying on 23 bakeries to feed 220 thousand people a day but says only two of them are still functional. Israels military says it carried out another ground raid in gaza overnight to target hamas fighters. These pictures, supplied by the idf, are said to show a Hamas Tunnel Being struck by a guided missile. Launch sites for anti tank missiles and command and control centres were also reportedly hit. The army said it killed a senior hamas commander. As tension continues to rise across the region, the United States has carried out airstrikes against targets in syria, linked to irans revolutionary guard. The us insists they are not related to the conflict between israel and hamas, and said it was a response to attacks on us forces in iraq and syria, by iranian backed militia groups. A source familiar with negotiations between israel and hamas which qatar is mediating, has told the bbc they are accelerating. That they are accelerating. Is just one report that we art looking that is just one report that we are looking to get more details on, but thatis looking to get more details on, but that is one report. I want to show you the live pictures from gaza because in the last few minutes we have seen several really large explosions, so those attacks from the Israeli Military continuing over the Israeli Military continuing over the last few hours. On our programme in the next few minutes, we will get the latest from our correspondent in the latest from our correspondent in the region and the latest from the un in new york. But we begin this hour with a report from our middle east correspondent, yolande knell. Waking up to another day of death in gaza. The bodies piled up after the latest israeli strikes. Translation at ten oclock, the apartment they were staying at was bombed. 14 people were killed. They were all females, among them a two month old baby and my niece, who was one year old. I dont know what to do. Aerial photographs show gaza before and after israels Intense Bombardment. These are neighbourhoods in the north. Amid the unprecedented destruction here, thousands have been killed and hundreds of thousands are homeless. Yet a top un official complaints only crumbs of aid are getting in. Basic services are crumbling. Medicine is running out. Food and water are running out. The streets of gaza have started overflowing with sewage. Gaza is on the brink of a Massive Health hazard and the risk of diseases are looming. Israels military says its continuing to hit hamas targets, again, sending limited Ground Troops into gaza overnight. But growing calls for a pause in fighting to let in aid and the presence of 200 plus hostages could yet delay a full ground invasion. There are also fresh worries about a regional escalation. This morning, the us said it had struck iran linked sites here in eastern syria, after complaining of attacks on its forces. And there was an explosion and a suspected Missile Interception on egypts red sea coast. Translation in recent hours, an Aerial Threat was spotted In The Red Sea region. Combat helicopters were scrambled in response to the threat and this matter is now being investigated. To our understanding, the strike that took place in egypt originated in this threat. With towns in southern israel virtually empty, normal life is on hold and gaza remains underfire. Across the middle east, much depends on what happens in this war. Yolande knell, bbc news, jerusalem. Lets get more on that developing news concerning negotiations. Earlier i spoke to our middle east correspondent tom bateman. This is a source familiar with the discussions telling the bbc that the negotiations towards a potential release of hostages are accelerating. I would counter that by saying we have had alerts on a few occasions earlier this week. Remember that four hostages of the more than 220 have been released. These are being mediated by qatar. These are being mediated by qatar. The United States has been heavily involved in these discussions, the egyptians as well, and the United Nations. No comment at all from the israeli side, and i think thats a familiar pattern, what we have seen in other previous conflicts between israel and hamas in gaza. In those instances when there have been negotiations around potential ceasefires, we might get information from the palestinian side not confirmed by the israeli side, so i think its best with these things to wait and see, matthew. As i say, we have had similar alerts previously this week, but of course, one of the facts that gives families of hostages some hope is that there have been four of those more than 220 released so far. Clearly there is a sense that the mediation, the discussion, goes on. All of that will be playing into the current military calculations of both sides here. Tom bateman in jerusalem. Here. Tom bateman injerusalem. Lets get more with frank gardner, our security is abundant security correspondent. Security is abundant security correspondent. Security is abundant security correspondent. Some of the Sticking Point really is about the mechanics of a Hostage Release because if you are talking about releasing quite large numbers, and we may get some good news in the next 2a to 48 hours, we may get some good news in the next 24 to 48 hours, negotiations are progressing and there is desire on both sides but the mechanics are that if you are going to get dozens potentially of people out, probably civilians, then its very difficult to do that in the middle of a bombing campaign, in the middle of airstrikes, but bombing campaign, in the middle of air strikes, but the israelis, as you know because you have just interviewed the israeli ambassador, you asked her, will there be a ceasefire because my she answered categorically no. It is partly semantics, this, but there are ways around this, i humanitarian or operational pores. There are ways of possibly looking at this. Somehow, they have to find a bit of common ground. The qataris are mediating, because they are the home to the Political Leadership of hamas in doha. They have a direct line to both the israelis and to hamas, so this is quite a gamble for them because they have come in for a bit of criticism as to why they are hosting the leadership of something which is a proscribed Terrorist Organisation in the uk, the us and elsewhere, but they are using their good offices and they are being praised by the uk, the us and even by israel for working hard so far to try and get these hostages out. Does it also partially try and get these hostages out. Does it also partially explain why we havent seen the Ground Offensive actually start . We heard the israeli Prime Minister say only a couple of days ago that they were ready, but they were ready dust mite weeks ago as well, what they . He they were ready dust mite weeks ago as well, what they . As well, what they . He has been accused of as well, what they . He has been accused of indecision as well, what they . He has been accused of indecision on as well, what they . He has been accused of indecision on this,. Accused of indecision on this, Benjamin Netanyahu. One reason they havent gone in yet is simple operational reasons. They needed to get their forces in operational reasons. They needed to get theirforces in place operational reasons. They needed to get their forces in place and operational reasons. They needed to get theirforces in place and get better eyes on what they are giving into. In the last 48 hours, you can see them training, but they have done these two night raids, probing, shaping operations to try to remove the immediate obstacles and ambushes they may encounter. There are other moves behind the scenes. The hostages are definitely a valid factor here because when youve got over 200 hostages being held under ground, and yet there are negotiations going on directly with hamas to get some of them released, there was a better chance of getting them out alive through negotiation than there is through storming the gaza strip. Then the americans are clearly concerned as to whether the Israelis Have an exit plan. You go into gaza, fight your way through, go into these tunnels, and lets just say that you go into gaza, fight your way through, go into these tunnels, and letsjust fight your way through, go into these tunnels, and lets just say they achieve their military aim, to destroy hamas. Personally, i dont think they can, but if they can, then what . Who the tangible have a power vacuum. All right, bring in the palestinian authority. They are discredited in many people s eyes in gaza, which is white or black got into power in the first place. No easy answers to that. And if you are going to have weeks or may be months of close quarters fighting in built up areas, you will take a lot of casualties and there will be heavy civilian casualties, which will not go down well in the rest of the world. Lets go to our North AmericaCondo Respondent at the un for us. Respondent. This resolution was described as outrageous because it doesnt name hamas and doesnt use the word hostage. In terms of the likelihood of anything really being agreed, what is your assessment . I think this resolution will pass with a large majority in the un council. As you mentioned, some european countries, canada and the United States have said that they cant support this unless there is a reference to hamas, and canada has proposed an amendment to this resolution that will be voted on in the assembly that directly condemns hamass attack and it names hostages, calling for them to be immediately released. I should note thatjordans draft does call for the release of all civilians, so including palestinians, who are being held by israel, particularly in the west bank, as we know is happening right now. Now this resolution will then go to a vote in just a few hours here in new york. As i mentioned, a large majority of support from the assembly from african nations. We heard from caribbean nations, Latin American nations, saying that right now the priority is to end the suffering of the people in gaza, to get them desperately needed humanitarian aid, their basic supplies that are being cut off right now by israels siege of the strip, and to stop the hostilities, to stop israels relentless bombardment. The majority of nations were very clear and unequivocal in condemning hamass attack and calling for the release of hostages, but they said it was important now for israel to follow International Humanitarian law and to let that aid in, and to cease hostilities. More long term, they expressed real concern about this spiralling across the rest of the region, and by the fact that there will not be peace in the region unless there is a lasting and just solution to this, calling again for a two State Solution based on un resolutions. We have heard these calls from the International Community. Arab nations, we have heard them state that they believe there is a double standard here in what is going on. They have called for the United NationsGeneral Assembly to make a clear stand that all lives are equal, all civilian lives are equal, and that humanitarian law has to be followed, but israel has already stated that they oppose this resolution. They are supported by their ally, the us, who have said that they dont believe this resolution meets the moment. Israel is insisting that they are not targeting all pale
