This hospital, though, is barely two decades old, far newer than many in the region. But parts of it have been too small to cope with swindons growth. Swindons population will have grown by 40 between the point at which the hospital was built and the end of this decade. So, in that sense, we are playing catch up. The new facilities wont just allow more patients to be treated. Theyll have more privacy, like with doors instead of curtains. There will be more space for relatives, separate areas for patients in Mental Health crises, and much improved and welcoming childrens facilities, too. You know the care youre able to provide is better, and thats huge to a nurse. Its huge to all clinical staff. And even our reception staff, the ability to just support patients and know that you can do more for them because of the environment and that theyre in a better environment, theyre better supported. While the cash is there for the new facilities, it doesnt bring with it more staff, but it does give the chance to rethink how patients are cared for in more efficient ways.
