Before you build an accessible playground, remove North Lansing Dam

National Dam Safety Awareness Day is May 31.
Given the renewed interest for the 92 acre Grand River impoundment in downtown Lansing and the proposed site of an accessible park in Adado Riverfront Park around a block upstream, it is incumbent on every interested resident to not only become aware of the positive nature of this riverine asset, but to also understand that there is a very serious potential drowning hazard.
The decommissioned Board of Water and Light North Lansing Dam is being examined for possible removal.  The reasons for removal of an obsolete structure are many; chief among them are to mitigate flooding, eliminating the drowning "keeper" in the dam's hydraulic boil, allowing migration of all fish species by improving fish habitat, improve riverine function and river corridor economics, and to improve the recreational benefit that the river affords the community. Lastly, dams are very expensive to maintain; even more so when there is no return on investment.
