Bessemer City Police officer charged with DWI, driving 118 mph on I-85 The Gaston Gazette A Bessemer City Police officer was arrested and charged with DWI after he drove 118 mph on Interstate 85 Sunday morning while off duty. N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper N.T. Hanline pulled over Gustavo Adolfo Laverde at 7:19 a.m. Sunday near the U.S. 321 interchange. Laverde was reportedly traveling 118 mph in his 2016 Lexus sedan while driving through in a 65-mph zone, according to an affidavit. Laverde, who turned 25 just two days before his arrest, had red glassy eyes and emitted a strong odor of alcohol. He admitted to drinking, while also driving with an open container of Mike’s Hard Mango Lemonade.
