GREECE, N.Y. (WHEC) — Local lawmakers introduced a bill that would get the community involved in projects along the Erie Canal.
The legislation would require the New York State Canal Corporation to notify local governments if they plan on doing work and hold public hearings before starting projects.
Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R-Greece) and Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt held a press conference on the bill this afternoon in Spencerport.
"While the canal is overseen by the Canal Corporation, it truly belongs to the people of New York State and the communities in which it runs through," Jensen said. "So our legislation would provide for better notification and a better public process."
