And yet, it knows exactly how we see each other and how we treat each other. Clear, there is no vaccine for racism. Work forot to do the george floyd, for breonna taylor, for the lives of too many others to name, for our children, and for all of us. We have got to do the work to fulfill that promise of equal justice under law. Because heres the thing none of us are free until all of us are free. So we are at an inflection point. The constant chaos leaves us adrift. The incompetence makes us feel afraid. The callousness makes us feel alone. It is a lot. And heres the thing. Deserve soetter and much more. We must elect a president who will bring something different, something better, and do the important work. A president who will bring all of us together. Black, white, latino, asian, indigenous, to achieve the future we collectively want. We must elect joe biden. Joei will tell you, i knew as Vice President. I knew joe on the campaign trail. And i first got to know joe as the father of my friend. And i served as attorneys general of our states, delaware and california. During the great recession, he and i spoke on the phone nearly every day, working together to win back billions of dollars for homeowners from the big banks that foreclosed on peoples homes. Beau and i would talk about his family. How as a single father, joe would spend four hours every day riding the train back and forth from wilmington to washington. Beau and hunter got to have breakfast every morning with their dad. They went to sleep every night with the sound of his voice reading bedtime stories. Endured anhey unspeakable loss, those two little boys always knew that they were deeply, unconditionally loved. Joewhat also moved me about is the work that he did as he was going back and forth. Wrote thee leader who violence against women act and enacted the assault weapons ban. Who as Vice President implemented the recovery act, which brought our country back from the great recession. He championed the Affordable Care act, protecting millions of americans with preexisting conditions. Who spent decades promoting American Values and interest around the world. Believes we stand with our allies and stand up to our adversaries. President we have a who turns our tragedies into political weapons. Joe will be a president who turns our challenges into purpose. Together tong us build an economy that does not leave anyone behind. Where a good paying job is the floor, not the ceiling. Joe will bring us together to end this pandemic and make sure that we are prepared for the next one. Joe will bring us together to squarely face and dismantle racial injustice, furthering the work of generations. Canand i believe that we build that beloved community. Decent, is strong and just, and kind. One in which we can all see ourselves. That is the vision that our parents and grandparents fought for. Made my lifeat possible. The vision that makes the american promise for all its complexities and imperfections a promise worth fighting for. Make no mistake. The road ahead is not easy. We may stumble. We may fall short. But i pledge to you that we will act boldly and deal with our challenges honestly. We will speak truth and we will act with the same faith in you that we ask you to place in us. We believe that our country, all of us, will stand together for a better future. And we already are. We are seeing it in the doctors, the nurses, the Home Health Care workers and frontline workers who are risking their lives to save people they have never met. We see it in the teachers and truck drivers, the factory workers and farmers. The postal workers and poll workers. All putting their own safety on the line to help us get through this pandemic. And we see it in so many of you who are working, not just to get us through our current crisis, but to somewhere better. There is something happening all across our country. It is not about joe or me. It is about you. It is about us. Ages and colors and creeds who are yes, taking to the streets and also, persuading our family members, rallying our friends, organizing our neighbors and getting out the vote. And we have shown that when we vote, we expand access to health care and expand access to the ballot box and ensure that more working families can make a decent living. I am so inspired by a new generation. Realizepushing us to the ideals of our nation. Pushing us to live the values we share. Decency and fairness. Justice and love. Patriots who remind us that to love our country is to fight for the ideals of our country. In this election, we have a chance to change the course of history. We are all in this fight. You, me, and joe. Together. Awesome responsibility. What an awesome privilege. So, lets fight with conviction. Lets fight with hope. Lets fight with confidence in toselves and a commitment each other to the america we know is possible. The america we love. Now, this moment will have passed, and our children and our grandchildren will look in our eyes and they are going to ask us, where were you when mistakes were so high when the stakes were so high . They will ask us, what was it like . And we will tell them, we will tell them, not just how we felt. Did. Ll tell them what we thank you. God bless you. And god bless the United States of america. David we have been listening to addressKamala Harris the convention from wilmington. Passionate and emotional speech. Emotion in the tone of her voice would also the words she spoke. Addressing the issues of racial justice, of inclusion of equality. Talking about us acting together and trying to get out the vote. She said of joe biden that he will take our challenges and turn them into purpose. She laid out some of the things she thinks are so essential and why she think joe biden is the right person to do that. Rick davis, what was your reaction . It felt like a very emotional plea. Rick i totally agree with you. I thought it was a very conversational speech. It was not soaring rhetoric. Much like president obama did in his speech before this. It was down to earth. She talked about joe, her friend. She talked about his accomplishments and what brought her to this stage. The first third of the speech was almost a rendition i felt like i was at her house for thanksgiving dinner. Talking about the family. I felt like we got to know her story a little bit better. I think that was one of the things she needed to accomplish tonight and she checked that box. David to our radio listeners, what we had happen is the president ial nominee, joe biden, has come out with his wife and band. Kamala harris hus they are appropriately socially distanced. Your reaction. Jeanne i agree with rick. It was deeply personal for the first third to half of the speech, which is important because you do get to know who she is. I think the goal she wanted to set out was that we can all see ourselves in her story. It is quite a story when you listen to it. I also thought the staging i am as summarized by the staging. Everybody is socially distanced. There or not that many people there. They are speaking in a big room. There seems to be a few people scattered in the audience. What i was struck by is this historic moment when she accepted the nomination. No applause. Just deafening silence. It just reminds you of the moment we are living in. The democrats did this on purpose to remind people, we are here in their minds because of the president s inability to handle this virus and to tell people that the biden presidency would change that. By the staging i am as summarized by the staging. David as i said earlier, you have done that. You have run a president ial campaign. Harris as you watch Kamala Harris tonight, did she do what joe biden needed her to do . Rick i think she defined herself to the american public. She took some good shots at the opponent, donald trump. Of did a very good job talking about joe bidens track record. What he has accomplished in public life, which i think this convention could have done more of. He is quite an accomplished guy. I think what she did, the key thing, is set herself up to be the advocate. She used a phrase early in her speech. Kamala harris for the people. I can see that on a lot of banners throughout the course of this campaign until november. David exactly. It is not. Lost on any of us she was a prosecutor in san francisco. It will play in interesting way when she has to debate the current Vice President , mike pence. Jeanne that is going to be fascinating because she is a very tough debator. The Vice President himself as a but it is going to be fascinating to see how that comes out. I think we are going to watch as she moves through the next few months to see how she is going to attack the president. I think were going to see a lot more of that. David one thing we did not hear is directly addressing some of the unrest in the cities. She talked about george floyd. She talked about breonna taylor. She did not talk about the need to keep our streets. Safe. Rick one of the things that got relative short shift was social justice issues. We assumed going into this convention that between the covid pandemic, the economic unemployment, and that issue of social justice would almost be equal time and attention. No question, the social justice issues have taken a backseat. David we are going to close our broadcast with a special guest. She is the Los Angeles County supervisor. She served as secretary of labor in the obama and extraversion the obama administration. Thank you so much for being with us. Appreciate you joining us. Earlier in the evening, you addressed the convention. You said Kamala Harris is your friend. You gave her credit for some economic initiatives. Tell us about that. I want to say that i know harris. Kamala i was one of her early supporters when she ran for senate. I went many time to go back to lobby when she needed when we needed assistance for the county of los angeles. She helped us out tremendously on Immigration Reform and job creation as well as our transportation projects. I want to say she was also fighting for better salaries for inHome Health Care workers and helping to raise the minimum wage. She has always been on the forefront. Never been afraid to do any of that. She has also taken on the banks. And she won. That says a lot for her tenacity and her wherewithal. She has that kind of a person who will just go to bat for the small person, for the small guy regardless of who you are. She will stand up for the right principles and thanks she knows that we believe in. I am really happy that joe biden made this decision. We need to really rally the troops and get a whole bunch of people engaged again. So many people are beaten down right now because of covid. They lost their job. She is right what she said tonight about people feeling left out of any conversation about any position of being able to get help from the federal government right now. We have to find a cure. In thee is a new person white house with a vp who is going to work every single day and not go out and take time to golf and talk and say it is all a hoax. This does exist. We see in Los Angeles County. The county board of supervisors, we know we have high rates of covid. It really is hurting people who are essential workers. People have lost their job and people who are on the verge of losing their job should on the verge of losing their job. Rick i went to get back to Kamala Harris. Is there a specific issue that as Vice President she would champion . We know in the past, Vice President s have been able to a couple issues and drive them within the administration. Is there anything in particular you think senator harris would champion as Vice President . I am going to fight really hard for the economy to make sure everyone gets an equitable fair share. She did here in california. I know she is going to continue to do it there. That is a broader discussion that has to happen. Each and as you have seen President Trump even as you have seen President Trump rewarding folks who do not need relief, they receive the benefits. What about the other 70, 80 of the public that did not get anything . She is going to make that a fight. I know she is going to be on everyday. She is going to expand health care to make sure we have a public option so people can keep their insurance. We are going to do a better job. We are going to help safeguard those dreamers she talks about. Instead of tearing people apart because of your religion or how you work or what side of the fence you were raised on. She is going to say no. We are going to treat everyone the same. That is the same principle that joe biden has. I cannot tell you how happy i am. Jeanne you alluded to this a little bit. For those of us across the United States who are just getting to know senator harris and you know her, what is something you would say we do not realize about her . She served in the senate for a time now. What do you know her as being from california in terms of the way she governs and what could we expect if indeed she becomes Vice President . She has a very popular person. I will tell you that. She has a strong following. Women look up to her. Young women. Women who look like me look up to her. They see themselves in a row model like that. She is going to fight for pay equity. She is going to fight for womens rights. She is going to care about the mom who has to raise her children. She is going to care about the person who has to take care of their elderly parent. She is going to care about the worker who puts his life on the line to feed his family. She was raised by a single mother. She knows how hard it is to work. Family means so much. To me, that is a value that resonates with a lot of people in our country right now. Basically, if we are going to take on this fight november 3, it is going to be out to be about unity. Bring everybody together. She has been able to do that. David we cannot thank you enough for joining us. That is the l. A. County supervisor and the former u. S. Eikeri former u. S. Secretary of labor. Would also like to thank rick davis and jeannie zaino. Tomorrow, we are going to have two hours of live coverage starting at 9 00 p. M. Eastern time has joe biden addresses the Democratic National convention and lays out his vision for the nation. This is coverage of the Democratic National convention on Bloomberg Television and radio. Im david westin. This is bloomberg. This is Bloomberg Markets asia. You are watching Bloomberg Markets asia. Taking a look at markets, seeing the selloff get a little bit worse now. Jitters in the market. Guest, ring in our next our guest cio for asia and europe at Deutsche Bank wealth management. He joins us from frankfurt. Always good to have you with us. We have the benchmark down the most since midjuly. Has the narrative changed in the market . Not really. I think today, the market is comments, the fed which is talking about some uncertainties down the road, which i think should not be a surprise. It is a reason to take some profit so nothing has really changed. Momentum,in terms of what will drive it . Will it be tech continuing the rally, lifting the benchmark from here . Could potentially be. For thetill positive quality growth, which includes tech but also health care companies. That has always been our call for some time now. We have seen this week, the nasdaq making some new highs. The s p 500 also reaching a new alltime high. It is mostly driven by tech companies. We think this can continue. Vaccine hope to find a that might bring us back to some sort of normality. U. S. Here, and hope for the to find some agreement for the next Fiscal Program so the recovery can continue in this way. You have a little more of a contrarian view when it comes to where the dollar goes. There seems to be a growing consensus that this downtrend of the dollar will continue. You are thinking it can strengthen. What is the case behind that . I think what has driven the dollar weaker currently is two fold. One was the rising number in infection over the past few weeks, which is trending down. Secondly, i already mentioned the markets are kind of disappointed there is no agreement on another fiscal deal. The dollar went weaker. There will be some sort of agreement. Maybe not to an extent democrats would like to have, but if this is coming, that should shortterm speak for the u. S. Dollar. If you also look the dollar looks pretty oversold. Hence the technical reaction could also be in the cards here. Therefore, we have a slightly positive you for the dollar over the next few weeks, even months. Yvonne we are going to leave it there. Joining us from frankfurt. The selloff gaining some momentum. The likes of taiwan following the most in five months.
