Caller sent in to review Liverpool amid bribery probe The communities secretary has appointed Max Caller to undertake an inspection of Liverpool City Council’s compliance with its best value duty in light of the arrest of its mayor Joe Anderson (Lab) earlier this month in connection with a bribery and witness intimidation probe. If the inspection finds the council in breach of the duty, Robert Jenrick has indicated he may then deploy commissioners to run some council services. He said the police investigation into building and development contracts in Liverpool, in which Mr Anderson was arrested earlier this month along with four other men involves a “significant connection” to the council and raises “significant concerns” as to whether it is complying with its best value duty under section 3 of the Local Government Act 1999.
