Corporal Jeremy Burkett said the first chase occurred Sunday shortly before noon. Troopers attempted a traffic stop for a tag violation on a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro driven by 31-year-old Gunvanta Thomas, of Mapleton, Georgia, on Southern Boulevard. Thomas did not pull over and gave chase, Burkett said. According to Thomas' charging documents, he drove in excess of 100 mph, running a red light and making multiple unsafe lane changes. He then attempted to make a right turn onto Mobile Highway at a high rate of speed when he began to lose control of the Camaro striking a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe that was stopped at the red light.
