A convicted sex offender from Harnett County has been charged in a multi-state bank robbery spree, one of which happened in the coastal North Carolina town of Carolina Beach. Charles Lee Pingley, 52, of 210 Prince St., Dunn, was indicted by a Tennessee federal grand jury last week on one count of conspiracy to commit bank robbery and two counts of bank robbery. Pingley stands accused in the Oct. 6 hold up of the First Citizen Bank in Carolina Beach, as well as bank robberies Nov. 5 in Lenoir, Tennessee, and Nov. 27 in Vonore, Tennessee, federal court records show. Media reports in Tennessee say the FBI dubbed the robber the "Bluetooth bandit" because in both bank robberies there, he wore a bluetooth headset.
