The Nebraska Cattlemen Association wants state lawmakers to pass a recent measure introduced by Senator Tony Vargas to give new pandemic protections to meat packing workers. They also are in favor of having more smaller processors. Association Executive Vice President Pete McClymont says Vargas’ bill requiring meatpacking companies to provide masks and adequate space for social distancing makes sense.
He says processors have done a good job of putting in steps to protect their workers during the pandemic and is hoping this legislation will add to that.
McClymont says the pandemic brought about the need for processing worker protections as well as for getting more smaller meat processors up and running and he’d like to see State Senators also address that need.
