CEC: PIL in SC challenges new law on appointment of CEC, ECs; seeks 'independent, transparent' system

Advocate Gopal Singh has approached the Supreme Court challenging a new law that grants extensive powers to the central government in appointing the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs), while dropping the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the selection committee. Singh's plea seeks the court's direction to establish an independent and transparent selection system with a neutral committee for the appointment of CEC and ECs.
