Share Updated: 12:03 PM EDT Jun 1, 2021 The mother Mute Swan, whose nest along the Boston Esplanade captured the attention of so many, died suddenly Sunday night, the Charles River Esplanade reported on social media Monday."We're saddened to report that the mother swan of the adorable Esplanade swan family passed away last night in her nest," the message said. The Boston Animal Control was called to the scene to help safely remove her from the swan's nest. Sylvia Zarco, a wilderness and travel photographer who has been documenting the family's journey since mid-April, said the father swan sat at the nest with their cygnets tucked under his wings, as a member of the city's animal control department wrapped the mother swan gently in a blanket. Zarco said the mother swan couldn’t lift and hold up her head, stumbled when she stood and couldn’t swim straight. It was not immediately clear why the mother swan died. Cygnets, which are young swans, are carefully tended for by their parents for up to a year, typically until when the next breeding season begins.
