Most evenings, we want simply to forget about the unpleasantness in the world. The joy of shows such as The Repair Shop and Bake Off is that they allow us to do just that. Full of kindness and friendship, formats like these — and the Sewing Bee, which returns tonight — leave division, politics and snide satire outside the door. Comedian Katherine Ryan either didn’t get that message or chose to ignore it, as she presented the opening round of a contest for talented jewellers, All That Glitters (BBC2). There’s nothing unusual about the game’s set-up. We’ve seen it played with everything from pottery to allotment vegetables: a group of enthusiastic, talented people do their best to impress two illustrious judges.
