On December 6, 1963, American Football league commissioner Joe Foss wrote a letter to National Football League Commissioner Pete Rozelle issuing a challenge: the winner of the AFL playoffs against the winner of the NFL playoffs in an annual championship game. Rozelle initially rebuffed the invitation, but in July 1966, an agreement was finally made between Rozelle and Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt to merge the two leagues and hold a championship game between the AFL and NFL — what we now know as the Super Bowl.
