CNN CNN Newsroom With Brooke Baldwin July 11, 2024

White house is underscoring this troubling statistic. 2. 5 million women have been driven from the workforce since the pandemic hit. On the medical side of this whole thing we now have news on Johnson Johnsons oneshot vaccine. Its moving closer to authorization for Emergency Use so that is a step in the right direction. Also that i had Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene once again defending her controversial rhetoric one day after her colleagues voted to remove her from her committee assignments. Going forward ive been freed. I do. I feel freed because you know whats happening on these committees . You see, we have a basically a tragically controlled government right now, the democrat. How does her party move forward now that trump is out of office . Her response. It doesnt. And i want to tell you, republican voters, support him still. The party is his. It doesnt belong to anybody else. Lets start there with our cnn Congressional Correspondent jessica dean who had quite an exchange with her earlier today at the Press Conference and well get to her in a sec. She apologized a little but also attacked a lot, jessica. Yeah, brooke, good afternoon to you. When we were outside with the congresswoman earlier today, she did go through some prepared remarks first, and she talked about how she supports the First Amendment and Freedom Of Press and how she wants to like us, the press being us there in that comment, but then it got to the question and answer portion, i pressed her on some specifics because while we saw her both today and also yesterday say that she was she didnt, you know looking back she shouldnt have said the things she said. Today she said she was sorry for the things she said, but she wouldnt talk specifics. Heres our exchange. I just wanted to ask you specifically. I listened to your speech yesterday but you said on a video on january 2019 im going to read it verbatim. Who are you with . Im jessica dean with cnn. By our Law Representatives and senators can be kicked out and no longer serve in our government and its a crime punishable by death is what treason is, thats what you said. Did you see my speech yesterday . How many how many stories did you report on russian conclusion conspiracy lies . No, i want to know have you apologized for russian conclusion conspiracy lies . Have you have you i want you to be able i dont have to. Do you stand by the fact that you said nancy pelosi is guilty of treason and i think you heard my speech yesterday. You owe the people an a narrator you lied about President Trump. You owe the people an apology. Ive done mine yesterday. So, again, simply just not responding to those specific questions, that specific statement is one that we saw House Democrats really zeroing in on. Of course, the threats of violence around House Speaker nancy please, and she simply would not answer that specific question if she still stood by those comments today. She did say she was sorry for the things that she had said but wouldnt get into specifics and wouldnt apologize for specific things or say exactly if she still believed some of the lies and Conspiracy Theories that she had talked about previously. So, brooke, from here we know shes been stripped from her committees. She says thats going to give her more free time to help former President Donald Trump with his next venture and help other conservative republican candidates in 2022 and she said as you heard her in the clip a few minutes ago that you played. She she will that shes been freed because she wont be on any of the committees and she plans to simply move forward doing the work outside of the committees. She still gets to vote and does get to represent her district in that way. Jessica dean with the smart questions, hold your ground, jess camp thank you, working that capitol hill beat fours. With me now to discuss all of this cnn political analyst Gloria Borger and political commentator charlie didnt, a former Republican Congress emergency. Welcome to both of you. My goodness, where do you begin on all of this . Charlie, im starting with you. You just heard Marjorie Taylor greene, you know, saying shes feeling freed not on these committees, that this is now trumps party and only trumps party and based upon what republicans did or didnt do my question is is it . I cant hear you. Or you cant hear me, congressman. Gloria, question to you. What do you think . Is this is this trumps party . Yeah. At this point i i think the republicans at least in the house are making a bet, of course, that it is Donald Trumps party. You saw that less than a dozen of them voted, you know, to take her off her committees, and i think the bet is that their voters, their base voters, 74 million of them, want Marjorie Taylor greene to serve of where shes serving. I think its its a deal with the devil because i think that Marjorie Taylor greene showed very little, if any, remorse, refused to answer direct questions like those posed by jessica, and i think in the end this is going to be a big albatross hanging around their necks because shes not going to get docile. She is going to be more and more of a problem for them. Yeah. I want to come back to that point because clearly she feels i would say emboldened. Congressman, im coming to you. You got me. Give me a thumbs up. Got. You lets talk about ben sasse before we talk about Marjorie Taylor greene because nebraskas Republican Party is trying to kcensure ben sasse listing 11 offenses for going after President Trump and even senator josh hawley. Well play the clip and this is what senator sasse had to say about all of this. You are welcome to censure me again but lets be clear about why this is happening. Its because i still believe, as you used to, that politics isnt about the weird worship of one dude. The party could purge trump skeptics, but i would like to convince you not only is that civic cancer for the nation, its just terrible for our party. Charlie, what do you think of what hes saying, and what does this say also just about the Republican Party on the state level . Yeah. Many of these republican State Committees and local County Committees have become very trumpified. They have been taken over. It is it is alarming, and pat toomey was being censured by one of our County Committees the other day. I was censured when i was in by a county committee. This is not uncommon. I should let you know, too, that as were speaking theres a summit going on among a number of republicans that are talking about these very issues, people who feel so disaffected and disenfranchised right now but this cult of personality. The party has to return to something closer to, you know, a party based on values and ideals and principles, not not the loyalty to one terribly flawed disgraced individual. Thats where we are. Well, speaking of i want to stay on to your point about lets call it the trumpification of members of congress. Ghorria, to your point about how Marjorie Taylor greene feels totally emboldened. She just said if she was actually still on a committee she would be wasting her time. Do you think shes more trouble for democrats and republicans on or off her committees . Look, i think, you know, shes got a big bullhorn right now and shes tweeting away. This morning she said i woke up early this morning literally laughing thinking about what a bunch of morons the Democrats Plus 11, meaning republicans are, for giving someone like me free time. Well, she has so much free time maybe she shouldnt be drawing a salary. I mean, if she doesnt have anything to do in service, maybe she shouldnt be, you know, taking money from the from the american taxpayer, so she feels emboldened. She says control is in control of the party, and i think that the congressman is absolutely right. Look at whats going on across the country right now. You saw cindy mccain, flake and governor doocy censured in arizona and one of the reasons that ben sasse was censured and i went through this ridiculous thing is that he showed indifference to the factual evidence of illicit acts as were committed during the November 3rd Election meaning he didnt buy into the big lie and thats why they are censuring him. So its brewing as weve been talking about at the state level and now percolate, know, among certain members of congress, especially on the house side. Heres my overarching question, charlie. The Republican Party has really created this space, the safe space for the likes of Marjorie Taylor greene and weve been having big overarching conversations about how did we get here as a Republican Party . We know how we got here. You know, trump never denounced qanon and never denounced david duke, never said no to these people, left the door open and republicans let him. So, congressman, unless something major changes, wont this now keep the door wide open for more Marjorie Taylor greenes to be elected in the future . Regrettably, yes, and when you think about it the real sad legacy of the Trump Administration was the lowering of the standard bar. The it used to be a time when, you know, we could get members of congress to resign on their own or forced resignations if they became a distraction or an embarrassment. Thats not happening now. That should have happened, and can i think of 11 resignations since i was in congress that were members actually resigned on their own or were forced because they became an embarrassment, in many cases for issues smaller than what were talking about with Marjorie Taylor greene, and thats thats the tragedy right now. We have allowed ourselves to not not enforce rigorous standards of these members. Marjorie Taylor Greene has no Business Being in the republican conference or on any committees. You know, strong leadership would have said, is you know what, were going to primary in 2022 and youre not welcome in the conference. Enjoy your time here in congress. Thats how they should deal with her. Charlie didnt, good to see you. Gloria borger, good to so you. Thank you so much for all of that. Were just getting news n. Word of a mah major Security Breach at Joint Base Andrews as a man gained unauthorized access on our site. Lets go to our correspondent at the pentagon barbara starr. Whats happened . Reporter well, the air force has had a very disturbing Security Breach at andrews which, of course, is the base that is the home to the Air Force One operations just outside of washington, d. C. , the aircraft that carry the president and Vice President of the United States in those very wellknown Blue And White aircraft. The aircraft that was breached was a Blue And White but were told not part directly of that president ial fleet. It was an aircraft that was the equivalent of a 737 last night and a man got on to andrews, Joint Base Andrews and then got on to the flight line and entered this c40 Blue And White aircraft. He was stopped. He was apparently in civilian clothes. We dont know how long he was aboard the aircraft. We dont know the circumstances. The aircraft on the flight line unlocked because they were conducting training operations, so what now, well, first the air force watchdog, the Inspector General conducting a full investigation of the incident and how it happened. Much deeper than theres now a worldwide review of all air force installations and flight lines to ensure that Something Like this could not happen again and security has been raised today at Joint Base Andrews. This was not a plane that President Biden or Vice President harris was expected to be flying on, but it really to some extent doesnt matter. The world knows those Blue And White aircraft as Air Force One, the aircraft designation for any airplane the president is on board, and a lot of concern that security is just not locked down as tight as it must be. Brooke. Understandable concern. If you get more information, well pass it along. Barbara thank you at the pentagon. There is a lot of good news. How about this today in the fight to end this man democratic. Cases, by the way, dropping as vaccinations start to outnumber new cases 101, and another vaccine could be on the way very soon. We have those details. Also ahead, President Joe Biden defending the price tag of his 1. 9 Trillion Covid relief plan as democrats took another step towards pushing it through without republican support. This week outnumbered the number of new cases by 101. It gets better. There could be a third Covid Vaccine in rotation by next month if the fda approves Johnson Johnsons onedose vaccine, and now the Biden Administration is sending in the troops to help states with those Mass Vaccine Sites that are finally ramping back up. Hes ordered the first contingent of more than 1,000 active duty Military Personnel to support state vaccination sites. Part of this group will start to arrive in california within the next ten days to begin operations there around February 15th with additional Vaccination Missions soon to follow. Teachers in several states are finally getting vaccinated and President Biden says millions of athome covid tests could be red by the end of summer. How we prioritize communities of color with the continued Vaccine Distribution and rollout will be vitally important tone sharing that we can close that inequitable gap. Reporter teachers and school staff now eligible for the vaccine in 24 states and d. C. The Cdc Working On New guidance after prompting confusion earlier this week. Reporter schools and parents and teachers and staff have been waiting for this type of guidance for months now. Reporter nationwide more than 9 million shots administered last week. Thats ten times the number of new cases added in the u. S. Two very different metrix marking important gains. I think overall things are definitely getting better, but i really do think that well get on top of this by summer or late summer because i think everything is now moving in the right direction. Reporter new cases are down nearly 20 in the last week. Covid hospitalizations falling below 90,000 for the First Time Since november. The federal government trg a plan to send masks to all americans. I hope in the next few days or next week we may be able to announce some progress on this. Experts stressing masks, physical distance and hand washing are the key to keep fast spreading variants at bay while waiting for your vaccine. Viruses will not evolve and mutate if you do not give them an open playing field. Reporter brooke, its not just major league baseball, its stepping up to the plate, full. Cnn has obtained a letter from nfl commissioner Roger Goodell to President Biden in which hes now committed that the stadiums for every nfl team will now be activated to help as mass vaccination sites. Seven teams have already opened up their stadiums or sites nearby to help in those efforts, but, again, nfl commissioner Roger Goodell saying every one of the 32 nfl teams is in this effort and they will make that available, brooke, as mass vaccination sites. Im feeling this breath of fresh air finally a little bit when it comes to this pandemic. Erica hill at Yankee Stadium. Dr. Gillander is a specialist in each deemologist and former member of the biden harris advisory board. Im riding the positivity rate. This week for every one covid case there are ten vaccines being administered. Are we officially turning a corner . We may be, brooke. It really depends on how we abide by some of the Mitigation Measures over the next several months while people are getting vaccinated. Only 2 of americans have been vaccinated so far, so we are very far from achieving herd immunity. What were really seeing is a decrease in cases, hospitalizations and deaths because we saw a big surge over thanksgiving, christmas hand new y years. I am cautiously optimistic. I hope people got the message and saw what happened when they got together with their family and friends over the holidays and had a that caused in terms of increased transmission. Im hopeful that that message sinks home. That as dr. Fauci says people will cool it a little bit over the super bowl weekend, that folks will will celebrate socially distanced and safely. The other piece of this which i mentioned a second ago is this new j j this, Johnson Johnson vaccine which could potentially be approved within a couple of weeks. How much would the Johnson Johnson vaccine help big picture here . Well, big picture, it really does increase your Vaccine Supply. Were looking at having a total of 100 million vaccines developed by pfizer and moderna by the end of june. Divide that by two, thats 200 Million People. The Johnson Johnson which is a onedose vaccine would add 100 million doeses to the mix that. Gets to you 300 Million People and then you have the novavax and aft zeneca vaccines coming on the heels of j j so by this summer i anticipate well have plenty of vaccine to vaccinate all 330 million americans who want to be vaccinated. Let me sit on that for a sec. Plenty of vaccines to vaccinate, all the americans this summer. Heres the one bit of not great news. Dr. Fauci is still warning that the uk variant could become his word dominant, doctor. What does that mean and how much might that push back on all this progress . Well, this is the bad news in the picture. The uk variant is predicted to become dominant by march so quite soon. It is a more contagious variant so youll have more cases, more hospitalizations, more deaths as a result of transmission of the uk variant. Theres also concern it may cause more severe disease for the individual who is infected with it. You know, i think big picture we really do need to do Everything Possible to prevent transmission to hold on until this summer whefsh when everybody can get vaccinated who wants to be but if we allow the virus to mutate which is what it does more variants could emerge and those variants, our vaccines may not protect against them so that would leave us in a very difficult sglogs it would. Thank you so much for all of that. Back to politics this afternoon. The democrats just took another major step towards passing their massive covid relief plan without republican support, and all of this is coming after President Biden defended the size and the cost of this package. Safe and easy ways to file that work around you. Nothing or not enough . Thats how President Biden is characterizing republicans efforts when it comes to bringing pandemic relief to americans all across the country. His scathing remarks come on the heels of pushing through a sweeping 1. 9 trillion Relief Package and signaling hes ready to move forward without bipartisan support. With me now cnn chief White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins and capitol hill correspondent manu raju. There were crickets on both sides of the aisle that said the president can lower the cost. How is he defending the price tag . Citing the jobs reports coming out today, talking about 49,000 jobs being added to the economy last month, 6,000 of those in the private sector saying not only does this is bill need to stay at same level that it is right now but it needs to get passed really quickly. Youre seeing democrats start to move to make that happened. Biden talked today probably in the clearest terms that weve heard yet since these talks started since he invited republicans here to the white house. Democrats, of course, as well saying hes moving forward with or without republican support. He was saying hes not going to get drawn into the long negotiations that could go on for weeks, you know, without any real promise, that it would finally attract republican support in the end and said that was an easy choice to make. He was willing to compromise on something, like targeting the stimulus checks. He says hes not willing to budge on one thing when it comes to those checks. The American Rescue plan is goings to keep the commitment of 2,000, 600 going out and 1,400 checks to people who need it. This is money directly in peoples pockets. They need it. We need to target that money so folks making 300,000 dont get any windfall and heres what i wont do. Im not cutting the size of the checks. They are going to be 1,400, period. They are going to be 1,400 but we dont know who is getting them hand when they will start phasing ought for some people and the white house says thats still under discussion, not something they have made a decision on how thats going to phase out and, of course, thats really important and thats what people will want to know over the next few days. What about the process over on the hill, manu . Now we know both chambers of congress have passed a Budget Resolution. What does it mean in terms of getting the bill passed . Its a huge step forward. Theres a very good chance that they could get their get this through certainly the house. The senate will be The Big Question mark. The passage of this Budget Resolution today by congress essentially sets the stage for a very critical next couple of weeks, what the process allows them to do in the senate is pass the legislation with just democratic support. They could avoid a republican filibuster because under the rules you can not filibuster this piece of legislation so that means instead of 60 votes that would ordinarily be needed to advance legislation, here you need 50 and there are 50 Democratic Senate seats thanks to the two Georgia Democrats who won the january 5th runoffs. Kamala harris could break the tiebreak vote, so they have the numbers to get it through but they still have to write the legislation. Nancy pelosi wants to deliver this package from the house to the senate within the next two weeks, and that could set the stage for a final passage vote by the end of the month, but, again, brooke, the details are going to be critical. Can they keep each wing of their party satisfied, the likes of bernie sanders, likes of a joe manchin who wants things more structured and focused and targeted in some aspects of this bill. Can they both wings of the party satisfied . Thats going to be The Big Question but one thing is clear. They are going to move without republican support. Can they get done with democratic support, The Big Question now in the next couple of weeks ahead. Manu, thank you. Kaitlan, thank you. Former President Donald Trump quick to reject the request to testify in a second Impeachment Trial. Will that hurt his case . Former President Donald Trump will not testify at his second Impeachment Trial set to begin next tuesday. His attorney swiftly rejected the Impeachment Managers request for testimony suggesting that it signalled the house could not prove the allegations against the former president. Lets dive into this. Larry tribe is a Constitutional Law Professor at harvard law and joins me now. Professor, a pleasure, sir. Welcome. Pleasure to be here, brooke. All right. So, you know, no one expected trump to say, yeah, great, sure, ill show up and testify but the Impeachment Managers say they can now use, that use his not coming, not wanting to show up against him. How will they do that . Well, they will do it the way Justice Scalia suggested some years ago when the late justice said if i ask my teenage kid have you watched this forbidden move and he kind of looks away and doesnt answer i know what that means. In this case theres plenty of common sense and law in support of the proposition that when someone is accused of in this case a really massive, Massive Attack on the United States of america, insurrection against the capitol and when weve all seen with our own eyes and heard with our own ears what he said and hes given the opportunity to explain why it doesnt add up the way it seems to add up and he says, you know, im too busy being expresident or you guys dont have a right to put me on trial we know what that means. Its the profound admission of guilt, and thats exactly the way i expect the house managers to use it. I wanted to ask you what you thought of his wording, you know, trumps rejection left. What did you think of it, the tone in this . What do you expect then using that as foreshadowing of whats to come next week . What do you think well see from team trump after reading the letter . Team trump has not acquitted itself very well. They dont even know how to spell United States. The they opened the door of trump not being courageous enough to testify so i expect the house managers to make the maximum use of it, and i expect the Trump Lawyers to trip all over themselves. Its its a sad sight because we would like to have the best possible presentation of whatever limited defense there can be, but i dont think there is much of a defense except this idea that because he ran out the clock we cant put him on trial and disqualify him in the future. That would set a terrible dangerous january exception, precedent for the future. It would mean that president s at the most vulnerable time when the country is going through a transition could try to overturn the results of an election they lost, and if that doesnt work they could use violence and then escape being held to account. The fact that you can prosecute him criminally after the fact is not enough because the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt in a criminal prosecution has nothing to do with what we should have to demonstration in order to protect ourselves from a tyrant who can get a third of the people behind him, many of them armed and dangerous. You are correct in how it would be precedentsetting. Right. What about witnesses, larry . We still dont know yet whether the managers will call any other witnesses to testify. You know, the trial starts tuesday. What do you think they are waiting for, and do you think that they should call witnesses . You know, to whatever extent i have any conversations with any of them, and some of them are my former students, i just dont feel free to talk about it. I think they will make their own decision. It will be a decision made in conjunction with nancy pelosi, with chuck schumer. I dont want to forecast. But i dont think we need witnesses to something weve all witnesses with our own eyes and heard with our own ears. This is the first realtime insurrection against the United States. What could be clearer . What could, what could be a better reason to say that someone is an existential danger to our republic . We dont need expert testimony. We dont need witnesses. Weve all steen with our own eyes. Its in front of us on audio and video recordings. Professor tribe there as harvard, thank you, professor, very much. Thank you, brooke. Again, the trial starts next tuesday. As congresswoman Marjorie Taylor greene defends her statements on all these Conspiracy Theories, we will take you inside a gathering of Qanon Followers before many of them traveled to washington on january 6th. Four months leading up to this election, former President Trump spewed lies spread by qanon and on twitter and refused to denounce the group when directly asked about it. Now were getting this incredible inside look at how Qanon Believers interpreted trumps comments. Attending this preelection meeting of Qanon Followers for this story. Im not supposed to be here. Theres a media blackout. One piece of advice for the Mainstream Media is that not everything can be debunked. Maybe it will be on the right side of hidsstory or down with e ship. You would think that Wear A Face Mask would help a Reporter Go Unnoticed but not at this gathering of Qanon Believers. Take off those damn masks. Me and my colleague there, two of the very few people Wearing Masks at this indoor event in the middle of a pandemic. And the guy at the back of the room . Hes known as the qanon shaman, and he would go on to storm the capitol in january. Where we go one we go all push you down where we go one we go all, Infamous Qanon Slogan promoted by trumps First National security adviser, michael flynn. Where we go one, we go all. Reporter played as an anthem at this meeting of trump supporters. We are at war right now. And we in this room understand that. Very, very much. You heard the president talking about that qanon thing. Yeah. Did he disavow it, anybody . No. Two nights earlier, trump praised Qanon Followers at a town hall with savannah guthrie. Can you, just once and for all, state that that is completely not true and Disavow Qanon in its entirety . I know nothing about qanon. I just told you. You just told me but what you tell me doesnt necessarily make it fact. I hate to say that. [ cheers and applause ] reporter the message to the people in this room was clear. Trump was on their side. So we have 17 days between now and a massive trump victory. [ cheers and applause ] reporter in the room prominent figures in the qanon movement, including jim watkins, who runs the site where qanon messages are posted and two people who would go on to washington, d. C. January 6th. It takes keeping our eyes and ea ears open to see who is on what side. Reporter jacob chanceley, socalled qanon shaman, who went on a Hunger Strike in prison because they didnt have organic food. We are at war right now. Reporter and this man, alan hostetter, known for organizing antilockdown protests in california. We are conditioned from the time were children in this country to always think that violence is a horrible, horrible thing. Until we go back and reflect on our revolutionary war. They picked up guns at some point and said enough. Until we reflect on the civil war. We ended slavery by picking up guns. We dont want that to have to happen. It always has to be something in the back of your mind. Reporter hostetters home was raided by the fbi after the insurrection. Media was not allowed to officially attend the event but any member of the public could attend. I signed up using my name and work email address. Also in attendance was travis mue, host of the qanon anonymous podcast, tracking this Conspiracy Theory for years. One of my big take aways from attending the Qanon Conference is that its more than the predictions or the feeling like youre getting inside information. Its about the community. The people there felt like they were part of Something Big and revolutionary, and that they were opposing absolute evil. And that made me feel like this is something thats not going to go away just because trump lost the election. Where we go one we go all [ cheers and applause ] and, brooke, as we go into this Impeachment Trial next week, you can see there how important the message from President Trump was, how important it was that trump was praising Qanon Followers and how important it was that he was not disavowing this movement to a room, by the way, which, of course, had some people in there who would later go on and take part in january 6th insurrection. Cnn reporter, sitting there, signed up as a cnn reporter in the room with some of the people like the guy with the the shaman, who would end up being such a central figure january 6th. It is stunning. Please keep digging up these stories and educating us on who these people are. Donie osullivan, thank you so much. Thank you, brooke.
