Alexei navalny has just been sentenced to 19 years in prison for creating a, quote, extremist community. He was already serving an 11 1 2 year sentence in a maximum security prison. We have Nic Robertson with us on this story. Nic, what does this mean for navalny and the people working the appeal these sentences . It means hes going to be under everyone stricter guard and having an even stricter Prison Regime around him. The Penal Colonies hes been into so far have been bad, but theyre going to get worse. Thats where this sentence will be conservatived out. Hes going to a penal colony, the sort of place that lifers normally go to, people the russian government describe at recidivists go to, where theyll have straight controls on the amount of movement he can have. Weve seen him suffer in jail with lack of sleep, lack of food, being made sick by the prison authorities, any number of things to try to break his spirit and will. But we saw the exact opposite of that in courtroom today. There he was, almost nonchalantly with his arms folded. We saw at one point him turn to his lawyer and seem to make a joke. And navalny tweeted earlier in the day, he expected exactly this type of sentence. He said it would be a stalinist sentence. He thought it would be 18 years. It was 19. Wont be surprised by. That he told his supporters to look at this, look at the sentence, why its so big, not for him, but to scare them off. Hes said in previous hearings, hes ready to take this punishment because he believes there can be a better russia. Hes so frail, nick, as you look at him. Hes pulling up pants that are almost falling off of him. His arms are skinny. You get a sense of how his health suffered through his deta detainment. And weve heard that from his daughter, from his supporters that theyve send in food for him, and he gets shown the food and it gets taken away from him. He is made sick by putting other detainees, other convicts in a tiny cell with him, convicts who have got heavy colds. When his Immune System is run down by having been kept awake at night by loud noise and Bright Lights going through the interrogations that he had to go through in the early situations, he is weaker than he was before, and this is becoming very visible. Hes not even getting mental stimulation. Hes not getting that contact with his lawyers or his family whos being denied writing materials, even reading materials. The physical confines of his jail as well just mitigate to try to rejuice him physically and mentally as a person. Yeah, hes sending a loud message with his body language, though. Hes casual. There isnt an intelligence assessment his mind on this, but this is what sources are saying. Putin knows trump will help him, and so do the ukrainians and our european partners. Nowing i wonder, as we consider what dan freed said about how the next Election Year complicates things, how do ukrainians feel . Do they feel the pressure they have to get things done while biden is in office . You talk to ukrainian officials or experts who have travelled to ukraine, what they say, the ukrainians feel even more pressure with regard to their current counteroffensive because of that looming u. S. President ial election. They know they need some sort of win or something to change the trajectory on the battlefield if theyre going to change the course of how things are going over the next few months which could impact how putin approaches the next year. We should also note that u. S. Officials believe that because putin is taking 2024 into consideration, they are really focused on getting that longterm support that ukraine needs. And its notable, because if you look at this map here, following last falls counteroffensive, which gains a great deal of territory in the northeast and down here by kherson, really the battlefield has been largely stuck in police, and thats something the observer should become conscious of. But right now we havent seen any indication of that. Its important to note, though, every other time that any of trumps challenges to the 2020 election, every other time theyve gone up before the Supreme Court, the court either decided not to hear the case or rejected trumps arguments even though 3 of the 9 justices were appointed by trump. He does not have a good track record at the Supreme Court. It is quite possible in the coming month osar years his team will try to challenge it. He does have a track record of demanding loyalty from those around him, and perhaps he feels like Supreme Court justices fall in that realm. I wanted to ask you about trumps newest attorney john l a lauro. Last night it appears he admitted trump was trying toedly the 2020 election certification. Saying it was well within the president s rights to use his fist amendment rights to challenge the election results. What john lauro was talking about, maybe take it a step further. Listen. Lets halt, pause the voting and allow the State Legislatures to take one last look and make a determination as to whether or not the elections were handled fairly. Thats constitutional law. Now knowns karen regatta. Her hands and feet discovered and skull found not long away in nassau county. Joining us now, we have criminologist scott bond, author and podcast host of the killing hour. Tell us why you think perhaps its because we have a bigger, broader database that people are participating in, scott. Is that why were getting this information about who this victim is so many decades later . Well, thanks for having me, breanna. Yes, from what were told this was connected through familial dna, not unlike the way the Golden State Killer was caught through ancestry dna. But its fascinating how this is unfolding, because they apparently have known her identity since october of last year, which is nearly a year, and that dove tailed with the investigation into rex heuermann. So what i believe is this was a conscious decision by Law Enforcement to get heuermann off the street first, lock him up, secure him, and then make this announcement so that it would not be a distraction or perhaps even spook heuermann. They have not linked this particular victim to rex heuermann, who has been arrested for murder of three of the gilgo four. Could this be him . When would a Serial Killer of the ilk of the island Serial Killer start killing . What age generally do they their first killings . Well, it could be a perfect fit, breanna, because Serial Killers typically begin in their early to mid 20s. Hes 59, so it would have been a the perfect time, really, with the profile of a Serial Killer like this. And this body is the first one that went missing in 96 and the first one to be there on gilgo beach. So she was the earliest. And i have a theory that a plausible theory on how this could have evolved. Because the earliest bodies, the ones discovered in april of 2011, many of them are dismembered, and actually had parts left elsewhere, just like her. If youre a Serial Killer and over time realize dismemberment is a lot of work, its a problem, and you know what . I dont need to do it because these bodies werent found. I could see how that Serial Killer could evolve and ultimately wrap his victims in burlap and leave them on the beach some that could be consistent with a Serial Killer who evolved over time. Not weird for the m. O. To evolve, which is a question i had for you there. I think this all comes down to, there are so many more bodies besides the women whose Murders Recommendation Heuermann has been charged, and it comes down to families and members of the public, scott, wanting to know if theres someone else out there responsible for this. Are these convinced . Are they feeling confident the person responsible for this is already behind bars . Well, brianna, such a good question. This has so many tentacles to it. We dont know what Law Enforcement discovered over the last couple weeks in his house. Does it link him to any of these other bodies . Does it link him to bodies that havent been discovered yet . These will all unknowns. But i believe that he is responsible for some of the other bodies that were found there on gilgo beach. Certainly number four.
