All eyes on georgia. And a potential fourth donald trump indictment. Every time the radical left democrats indict me, i consider it a great, great, great badge of honor. And new cnn reporting links a post election breakin back to the former president s lawyers. Plus the president s son and the special prosecutor. He has been granted ultimate authority over this matter including the responsibility of deciding where, when and whether to file charges. And there was a Special Counsel and guarantees a collision between law and politics. And the fair brings a faceoff over january 6. Did you intend to over turn the 2020 election. You know the answer. And overheated hecklers. My question is this, why did you commit treason . And gives one candidate one shot. Good morning and welcome to inside politics. Im casey hunt in for abby phillip this morning. This morning the politics of the campaign playing out alongside the trials and tribulations of the former president fts United States and now of hunter biden, the son of current president of the United States. More on that in just a moment. But first, what is par for Donald Trumps legal course . Another new indictment . Soon georgia prosecutors will ask a grand jury to return charges related to mr. Trumps plot to overturn the 2020 election. We learned that one witness, Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor jeff duncan has been told to appear before a grand jury on tuesday. And new and exclusive cnn reporting reveals that georgia prosecutors have Text Messages and emails that connect the dots between a 2021 breach of Georgia Voting systems and Donald Trumps own Campaign Lawyers. And that is where we start in atlanta with cnns zachary cohen. You are breaking this reporting this morning. What have we learned . Reporter this is potentially new details about pivotal evidence in this election. As as you mentioned, these lay out a plan to gain access to Voting Systems in a rural georgia county, Coffee County, georgia. We know that Trump Operatives did break the Voting Systems in Coffee County on january 7th, 2021. But the texts show in days leading up to that, they were working to secure a Written Invitation to come into the Elections Office and examine the Voting Offices in Coffee County. So, zack, just how high up the chain did it plan go . Reporter yeah, we know that this plan was discussed or at least referenced in a december 18th, 2020 Oval Office Meeting where donald trump was present and as Campaign Lawyers and Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Michael Flynn and Rudy Giuliani is one according to House Select Committee testimony, is one who brought this up in that Oval Office Meeting in front of trump, this idea that it could recruit sympathetic Election Officials that could give them access to Voting Systems and that did play out in Coffee County and the texts do take us inside of the planning and the leadup between Campaign Lawyers like Rudy Giuliani and those who did get access to those Voting Systems. Pretty remarkable. Zack, thank you very much for that reporting. Lets discuss that and more with josh dawsey of the Washington Post and Zolan Kannoyoungs and Sarah Longwell and elliott williams. Never a dull moment. Already underway here in august. But elliott, these about the court cases at the end of the day. Let talk about zacks new reporting. What did you hear there . That donald trump was in an oval Office Discussion that they were involved in interfering with counting votes. I hear computer trespass. What it looks like is that the District Attorney is putting together a racketeering or rico case that involves in effect proving that a criminal enterprise exists to commit two different crimes in the state of georgia. Computer trespass and forgery and tampering and election interference and i think that is what it seems like shes doing and then there is a host of other crimes as we. And politically their invest pressure Election Officials, we remember the perfect phone call which we may play in a little bit. The plot to put forward the fake electors an now this Voting System breach in rural Coffee County. These are separate pieces. We know zack smith is zeroing in on fake electors. Josh dawsey, when you think about how this georgia case plays into trumps challenges overall and how hes going to deal with the Campaign Going forward, how do you see it. There is a pana pleaa of dimes that he faces and a judge in d. C. Said we want a trial in january 2nd for the iowa caucus on the january 6 case and the documents case is likely going to trial next year. There is a new york case that doesnt get talked about any more because that was two indictments ago that is probably going to trial next year. And that is probably the weakest of the bunch. Legal experts would say that. And we expect a lot of charges and his team said he expects to be charged. So youre going to have a frontrunner for the gop Nomination Cycling in and out of courtrooms and trials. Think about all of the things molly knows this better than i do, all of this that leads up to a trial and the defendant has to be involved in. And it is hard to imagine a scenario next year where you have trump on the trail, in iowa and South Carolina and New Hampshire and then having to fly into courtrooms to meet with his lawyers. It is going to be something weve never covered before an owe campgnrail. I dont want to interrupt you, becauselaid this out for viewers because we noticed starting on january 2nd, there they are, circled on the calendar, these are trumps entanglements legally and politically. So starting withanry 2nd, e e. Jean carroll trial and these trials continue. Zolan, you have what josh outlined, the former president s challenges politically. There is also the Bigger Picture of the Republican Party, this overlaps with the nominating process but a lot plays out before we get to convention. And sarah, weigh in on this too. And what happens if he is convicted in any one of these and hes still the choice for voters on the Republican Party. And it commands the attention as well. While other candidates are trying to compete here. And it prompts the question of the Pardon Question again if hes convicted. Each candidate may be pressed at that point of what they could do if they were elected when it comes to whether or not to pardon the former president as well. There is also just with all of these different investigations and indictment and an Immediate Impact financially, too, for the former president. I know youve been reporting on this extensively as well. But early this year, youre seeing him spend millions on the legal fees an how that will impact the ability to have Something Like Campaign Rallies which have been a staple of the Trump Campaign moving forward. It is interesting how that plays forward as well. And when it comes to Republican Voters, weve been asking for months about dime and will say did the indictments make you want to support trump less or more or is it neutral and people say it makes them support him more or their neutral. And i think that there was a period of time where we hoped that the cumulative effect would break through to voters but when i ask primary voters, it is the opposite. It is just white noise that washes over them and theyll tell you, another day, another indictment and it is just them trying to get trump and hes the most dangerous and hes a threat to the deep state or hes a threat to the establishment. We have a quick sound bite of a trump supporter kind of trying to explain and this was a sympathetic audience in iowa, a sympathetic platform in iowa. But listen to what this voter had to say. You know, im going to vote for the man with most impeachments and the most indictments because, guess what . He knows where all of this corruption is now and hes going to go in and clean up. Josh, youre laughing . Well, it is quite a take. And traditionally in politics, being indicted multiple times would not help you raise money and help you get elected but it seems to be helping him among Republican Voters, it is unclear if it will help him among general election voters which he needs to be president. And in the past when trump has done things that sort of republican establishment loathe, think about the access Hollywood Tape and they tried to get him to drop out and had the efforts, i dont think theyll do that this time. If hes convicted of a felony an the republicans voters put him as a ticket, party is going to, you know, sort of have to deal with what theyre dealt with. Theyre not going to try to remove him. The gop is in a tough spot. Because whatever happens to imhad, the voters are still with him no matter what. So what do you do if youre the party . You go along with the bumpy ride. This is 100 true. I mean, five years ago, we would have all sat around saying, oh, well, voters will not tolerate that and weve learned a lot since then and we know that trump could get away from this and the Republican Party will accept it and lean in and take it for what it is and theyre not going to push back. So, i absolutely, all of my reporting lines up with both of you and obviously weve seen no indication that anything else is going to play out. But the challenge is when you goodet to the general election. Because weve seen repeatly that the general electorate is over this. Theyve rejected trump sim hfl in the 2020 election against joe biden, but also a series of other republican candidates down the ballot, when they have embraced trump, too much. So where does this leave your it is your current party, right . You havent left the party . I have nothing to do with the trump version of the Republican Party. Look, im out here, i would like to see somebody defeat him. But the problem is, like, you cant beat something with nothing. And right now these other candidates are giving us nothing. But when it comes to swing voters, look, i think about how a trumpbiden rematch, how that feels boring on the surface and yet it is the wildest Campaign Election weve ever seen with him on trial and yes, swing voters, they hate that stuff. And they hate the idea that trump is being indicted and the more that that is at the top of their minds as theyre voting, the worst it is for trump. I want to circle back to georgia as we wrap up the legal portion of this discussion because we got a little bit of a taste from trump himself about how he may talk about some of the things that zack cohen reports, the charges that we may see unfold in chargers. He was asked about this. Watch. Do you defend the actions of your allies in 2020. Plenty of allies i dont know. Because we have so many allies because some of them i dont know. So i dont know exactly what youre talking about. So that sounds like what liz defense is going to be. So many allies. We have so many allies, i dont know. So i think that is a defense one of a racketeering and two to a conspiracy charge, if he could claim this was a lot of rogue actors not working in concert then they cant the prosecutors cant establish a conspiracy. Now the problem for the former president is that there is there is the tapes an the Text Messages an communications between him and members of hi team and him and the Georgia Secretary Of State directly. So, it is kind of hard to run away from a conspiracy when youre on the record talking to a lot of individuals who probably are going to be charged. Since we have it. Lets just remind everybody, this is the tape that elliott is talking about. The phone call between trump and the Georgia Secretary Of State. Listen. So, look, all i want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes. Which is one more than we have. Because we won the state. So, any staffer who prepped him for that call to potentially be charged with conspiracy. So debunking this idea well it was a lot of people acting alone. Anybody who was on call, because as i understand, he wasnt alone on the call, could potentially be charged with a crime. So yes, it is entirely fair for someone chargesed with a conspiracy, no, that is the guys on the other side of the room but now that seems to poke some holes of that. And there was a Oval Office Meeting where perhaps this came up. It is going to be a wild week, folks. So, coming up next, a sitting president , his son, and now a Special Counsel. Bidens reelection bid just got a whole lot more complicated. That is coming up. Inside politics susunday brought to you by adt, brilliantly sasafe. When nature and science get together.
