All eyes on georgia. And a potential fourth donald trump indictment. Every time the radical left democrats indict me, i consider it a great, great, great badge of honor. And new cnn reporting links a post election breakin back to the former president s lawyers. Plus the president s son and the special prosecutor. He has been granted ultimate authority over this matter including the responsibility of deciding where, when and whether to file charges. And there was a Special Counsel and guarantees a collision between law and politics. And the fair brings a faceoff over january 6. Did you intend to over turn the 2020 election. You know the answer. And overheated hecklers. My question is this, why did you commit treason . And gives one candidate one shot. Good morning and welcome to inside politics. Im casey hunt in for abby phillip this morning. This morning the politics of the campaign playing out alongside the trials and tribulations of the former president fts United States and now of hunter biden, the son of current president of the United States. More on that in just a moment. But first, what is par for Donald Trumps legal course . Another new indictment . Soon georgia prosecutors will ask a grand jury to return charges related to mr. Trumps plot to overturn the 2020 election. We learned that one witness, Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor jeff duncan has been told to appear before a grand jury on tuesday. And new and exclusive cnn reporting reveals that georgia prosecutors have Text Messages and emails that connect the dots between a 2021 breach of Georgia Voting systems and Donald Trumps own Campaign Lawyers. And that is where we start in atlanta with cnns zachary cohen. You are breaking this reporting this morning. What have we learned . Reporter this is potentially new details about pivotal evidence in this election. As as you mentioned, these lay out a plan to gain access to Voting Systems in a rural georgia county, Coffee County, georgia. We know that Trump Operatives did break the Voting Systems in Coffee County on january 7th, 2021. But the texts show in days leading up to that, they were working to secure a Written Invitation to come into the Elections Office and examine the Voting Offices in Coffee County. So, zack, just how high up the chain did it plan go . Reporter yeah, we know that this plan was discussed or at least referenced in a december 18th, 2020 Oval Office Meeting where donald trump was present and as Campaign Lawyers and Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and Michael Flynn and Rudy Giuliani is one according to House Select Committee testimony, is one who brought this up in that Oval Office Meeting in front of trump, this idea that it could recruit sympathetic Election Officials that could give them access to Voting Systems and that did play out in Coffee County and the texts do take us inside of the planning and the leadup between Campaign Lawyers like Rudy Giuliani and those who did get access to those Voting Systems. Pretty remarkable. Zack, thank you very much for that reporting. Lets discuss that and more with josh dawsey of the Washington Post and Zolan Kannoyoungs and Sarah Longwell and elliott williams. Never a dull moment. Already underway here in august. But elliott, these about the court cases at the end of the day. Let talk about zacks new reporting. What did you hear there . That donald trump was in an oval Office Discussion that they were involved in interfering with counting votes. I hear computer trespass. What it looks like is that the District Attorney is putting together a racketeering or rico case that involves in effect proving that a criminal enterprise exists to commit two different crimes in the state of georgia. Computer trespass and forgery and tampering and election interference and i think that is what it seems like shes doing and then there is a host of other crimes as we. And politically their invest pressure Election Officials, we remember the perfect phone call which we may play in a little bit. The plot to put forward the fake electors an now this Voting System breach in rural Coffee County. These are separate pieces. We know zack smith is zeroing in on fake electors. Josh dawsey, when you think about how this georgia case plays into trumps challenges overall and how hes going to deal with the Campaign Going forward, how do you see it. There is a pana pleaa of dimes that he faces and a judge in d. C. Said we want a trial in january 2nd for the iowa caucus on the january 6 case and the documents case is likely going to trial next year. There is a new york case that doesnt get talked about any more because that was two indictments ago that is probably going to trial next year. And that is probably the weakest of the bunch. Legal experts would say that. And we expect a lot of charges and his team said he expects to be charged. So youre going to have a frontrunner for the gop Nomination Cycling in and out of courtrooms and trials. Think about all of the things molly knows this better than i do, all of this that leads up to a trial and the defendant has to be involved in. And it is hard to imagine a scenario next year where you have trump on the trail, in iowa and South Carolina and New Hampshire and then having to fly into courtrooms to meet with his lawyers. It is going to be something weve never covered before an owe campgnrail. I dont want to interrupt you, becauselaid this out for viewers because we noticed starting on january 2nd, there they are, circled on the calendar, these are trumps entanglements legally and politically. So starting withanry 2nd, e e. Jean carroll trial and these trials continue. Zolan, you have what josh outlined, the former president s challenges politically. There is also the Bigger Picture of the Republican Party, this overlaps with the nominating process but a lot plays out before we get to convention. And sarah, weigh in on this too. And what happens if he is convicted in any one of these and hes still the choice for voters on the Republican Party. And it commands the attention as well. While other candidates are trying to compete here. And it prompts the question of the Pardon Question again if hes convicted. Each candidate may be pressed at that point of what they could do if they were elected when it comes to whether or not to pardon the former president as well. There is also just with all of these different investigations and indictment and an Immediate Impact financially, too, for the former president. I know youve been reporting on this extensively as well. But early this year, youre seeing him spend millions on the legal fees an how that will impact the ability to have Something Like Campaign Rallies which have been a staple of the Trump Campaign moving forward. It is interesting how that plays forward as well. And when it comes to Republican Voters, weve been asking for months about dime and will say did the indictments make you want to support trump less or more or is it neutral and people say it makes them support him more or their neutral. And i think that there was a period of time where we hoped that the cumulative effect would break through to voters but when i ask primary voters, it is the opposite. It is just white noise that washes over them and theyll tell you, another day, another indictment and it is just them trying to get trump and hes the most dangerous and hes a threat to the deep state or hes a threat to the establishment. We have a quick sound bite of a trump supporter kind of trying to explain and this was a sympathetic audience in iowa, a sympathetic platform in iowa. But listen to what this voter had to say. You know, im going to vote for the man with most impeachments and the most indictments because, guess what . He knows where all of this corruption is now and hes going to go in and clean up. Josh, youre laughing . Well, it is quite a take. And traditionally in politics, being indicted multiple times would not help you raise money and help you get elected but it seems to be helping him among Republican Voters, it is unclear if it will help him among general election voters which he needs to be president. And in the past when trump has done things that sort of republican establishment loathe, think about the access Hollywood Tape and they tried to get him to drop out and had the efforts, i dont think theyll do that this time. If hes convicted of a felony an the republicans voters put him as a ticket, party is going to, you know, sort of have to deal with what theyre dealt with. Theyre not going to try to remove him. The gop is in a tough spot. Because whatever happens to imhad, the voters are still with him no matter what. So what do you do if youre the party . You go along with the bumpy ride. This is 100 true. I mean, five years ago, we would have all sat around saying, oh, well, voters will not tolerate that and weve learned a lot since then and we know that trump could get away from this and the Republican Party will accept it and lean in and take it for what it is and theyre not going to push back. So, i absolutely, all of my reporting lines up with both of you and obviously weve seen no indication that anything else is going to play out. But the challenge is when you goodet to the general election. Because weve seen repeatly that the general electorate is over this. Theyve rejected trump sim hfl in the 2020 election against joe biden, but also a series of other republican candidates down the ballot, when they have embraced trump, too much. So where does this leave your it is your current party, right . You havent left the party . I have nothing to do with the trump version of the Republican Party. Look, im out here, i would like to see somebody defeat him. But the problem is, like, you cant beat something with nothing. And right now these other candidates are giving us nothing. But when it comes to swing voters, look, i think about how a trumpbiden rematch, how that feels boring on the surface and yet it is the wildest Campaign Election weve ever seen with him on trial and yes, swing voters, they hate that stuff. And they hate the idea that trump is being indicted and the more that that is at the top of their minds as theyre voting, the worst it is for trump. I want to circle back to georgia as we wrap up the legal portion of this discussion because we got a little bit of a taste from trump himself about how he may talk about some of the things that zack cohen reports, the charges that we may see unfold in chargers. He was asked about this. Watch. Do you defend the actions of your allies in 2020. Plenty of allies i dont know. Because we have so many allies because some of them i dont know. So i dont know exactly what youre talking about. So that sounds like what liz defense is going to be. So many allies. We have so many allies, i dont know. So i think that is a defense one of a racketeering and two to a conspiracy charge, if he could claim this was a lot of rogue actors not working in concert then they cant the prosecutors cant establish a conspiracy. Now the problem for the former president is that there is there is the tapes an the Text Messages an communications between him and members of hi team and him and the Georgia Secretary Of State directly. So, it is kind of hard to run away from a conspiracy when youre on the record talking to a lot of individuals who probably are going to be charged. Since we have it. Lets just remind everybody, this is the tape that elliott is talking about. The phone call between trump and the Georgia Secretary Of State. Listen. So, look, all i want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes. Which is one more than we have. Because we won the state. So, any staffer who prepped him for that call to potentially be charged with conspiracy. So debunking this idea well it was a lot of people acting alone. Anybody who was on call, because as i understand, he wasnt alone on the call, could potentially be charged with a crime. So yes, it is entirely fair for someone chargesed with a conspiracy, no, that is the guys on the other side of the room but now that seems to poke some holes of that. And there was a Oval Office Meeting where perhaps this came up. It is going to be a wild week, folks. So, coming up next, a sitting president , his son, and now a Special Counsel. Bidens reelection bid just got a whole lot more complicated. That is coming up. Inside politics susunday brought to you by adt, brilliantly sasafe. When nature and science get together. This week republicans got a long sought after wish for the Biden Justice department to name a Special Counsel to oversee the prosecution into the president s son hunter. Disappointment confirmed my commitment to provide mr. Weiss all of the resources he requests. It also reaffirms that mr. Weiss has authority he needs to con duck a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deeps appropriate independently based only on the fac facts and the law. The announcement and the court Filing Signaling that plea talks have broken down and sentenced the Biden Campaign to a certain fate. Politico, biden resigned and came shadowed by hunter drama. But lets listen to what republican lawmakers since the appointment, they say new Special Counsel falls fails a smell test. I dont trust the weiss team to get to the bottom of what hunter biden and joe biden may have done. How ironic, the day after we announce that we put together a case to win in court to subpoena joe bidens bank reports, Merrick Garland strikes again. What has been put into play it a big hoax on the american people. It sounds good an owe the sur surface, right. The problem is this could slow down an impeachment inquiry. Times molly ball joins the conversation now. Im testing to say that these guys protest too much. And after the plea deal came out they decided they didnt trust this prosecutor any more. And so now you have this outcome, but i wouldnt say that what im hearing from my sources necessarily lines up with what theyre saying in public. I feel like there is more, yes, we did get what we want but can he cant say it out loud. What is going on. There is a little bit of that. But for republicans who just want to damage joe biden politically, this is a bit of a blessing in that it extends the process. Right. Between the plea deal falling apart and the appointment of Special Counsel, we know, as that headline you just played said, this is a saga that will continue to shadow the campaign and continues to be an issue. And so if youre a republican, they are saying that, you know, yes we wanted a Special Counsel but not this Special Counsel and so there is a bit of cognitive dissident there but this is just a continuing headache for biden and his campaign. Zolan, you cover the white house day in and day out. The president has not, if anything, hes put hunter further on display lately. Just a couple of days after the original plea deal was announced, he was at the state diner that Merrick Garland also attended. I think we have pictures of there they are walking together. You sort of i feel like now maybe we were paying closer attention, but his face has been next to his fathers out in public quite a bit as this is all unfolded. What is the thinking for the white house there . Are we going to see less of this now that the Special Counsel has been announced . How are they approaching it. I have heard nothing that you would suggest that you would see less of a visible presence of hunter biden. I think there will be a collective silence on the actual trial, the actual investigation. Potential trial or investigation. Both from dnc and white house. But lets be clear. There was also a sort of the white house wanted there was going to be a sigh of relief from both democrats an the white house if a plea deal had been reached. The fact of the matter is that, when that didnt happen, there is now anxiety that is growing in the dnc an the white house over the fact that any update with this Special Counsel review will be a distraction at a time when the white house is aggressively trying to get out and turn the tide on voters sentiment around the economy. I was speaking to biden allies this weekend, who were saying it is not exactly the review itself, or the Practical Impact of it. It is the fact that right now we need to go out and message to voters around what we have done and with this lingering and overshadowing that, it is a distraction against our message. At a time when remember polls show that still a lot of people dont have clarity or understanding exactly the bills that they have passed thus far. And i think one of risks too, big picture here, this will put the hunter stuff in front of a lot more people than perhaps werent paying attention to the way the Rightwing Echo Chamber was covering this. Josh, i want to play how republicans, candidates are handing this on the trail. We have donald trump and ron desantis talking about this. Holy well he turned out to be. He was in some dark places. At some point joe is going to have to say, you know, this son thing just isnt working out. Do you agree . If he were a republican, hed be in jail by now and we all know that. The good thing about us is, my kids are six, five and three, so theyre not bringing any cocaine into the white house when im president. Lets say what it is. They do seem willing to forgive trump the sins that the Justice Department is prosecuting him for, theyre not so quick to do that in this particular case. But they are kafcasting it as a political Justice Department. Do you think this is something that will break through outside of the Rightwing Echo Chamber as we head into the fall or how do you see it playing . I dont think we know yet. But a lot of republicans that have been asked, if you watch Kevin Mccarthy and as soon as question comes, they immediately talk about hunter biden. So it is given them a way to pivot of whatever the uncomfortable revelation is about trump or a new indictment, or a new sort of damning notion that came out about him. They sort of pivot to hunter biden. I think the argument a lot of republicans are making is they that i that the trump family, at least the ones that ive talked to, if they would have done some of the things that hunter biden would have done there would have been more coverage on it and they believe it is an idea of fairness that hunter biden had a lot of entanglements and a lot of money and they dont know how far it gets up in the family. But there is like legitimate questions there, right. On sort of his dealings and what he did while his father has had a powerful role in this country. So, i think well certainly try to talk about it any time the trump comes up. Whether that permeated with voters, we dont know yet. Dawsey is hitting on something, all of this fuels the what aboutism of it all. Even from you biden surrogates talking about the criminal indictments that trump is facing, this, the hunter biden basically as Special Counsel being appointed it allows different republicans to continue to point out the Justice Department and continue to say, well what about that case. Although we should underscore, and you mentioned this, the foreign entanglements question. The republicans have directly to find evident that ties the president himself to anything improper in terms of hunters potential crimes. But we also have touched on another thing, yes, it is what aboutism. And theway that trump has completely overtaken on politics in the way that we think about it, is that maybe for democrats that means that this doesnt matter the way it might have mattered before. Here is the Democratic Party chair. Oh, sorry, yes. So this is what he said as a quote. Prior to trump this would be a bideal. This is ray buckley speaking. Now i dont ink this means anything. Trump has made everyone so numb to this stuff. Is he right, sarah . When we talk to swing voters and ask about hunter biden, there is someone like this in every family. They treat it like it is a family matter, a personal matter. I agree with you that the more that this proceeds through the general election, it will muddy the waters because they will say indictment on all sides and corruption on all sides. But right now from swing voters, as long as it is not tied to joe biden, they will continue to treat it as a family personal thing. And we have some swing voters that were part of a focus group in michigan talking about actually making the very point sarah just made. Take a look. I just dont care. Unless it directly has something to do with President Biden doing something illegal with china an stuff like that and i havent seen anything even remotely close to that. Ive seen a lot of nepotism in careers and people that throw out names and stuff. Im such and suchs Family Member to just move ahead. That doesnt make it the president s fault because his son did something stupid. Prior president s used other Family Members that have benefits from every Single Person in office it seems like. You cant necessarily control what your Family Members are doing. It is a fair point, molly ball. Were all responsible for the sins of ow our children. These voters do seem willing to forgive the president for his son. It muddies the water in being in iowa and talking to voters and not all Republican Base voters, there is a sense that the whole system is corrupt. An this is sense of a lot of vo voters for a long time now and i dont think biden and his campaign have an answer to that. It is not true when trump said hes going to drain the swamp, but hes speaking to voters who believe that the system is corrupt. And i dont think that the Biden Administration has an answer to them besides saying no, it is not. So that is something that you do hear from a lot of voters an you even heard from the voters in that focus group, this is so pervasive that maybe it doesnt matter. But that means it doesnt platter what trump doesn it either. Even though it is trump an not his son on the republican side. That is some tradition at the iowa state fair. President ial candidates favorite place to win over the hawkeye state. This year it is no different. And they try to sell their platforms and prove how much they love iowa. Everything starts in iowa. We all know that, doan we. Yall you have chicken in a waffle on a stick. I got to try that one. And he stopped and said daddy, is this heaven. I know, no. Son, it is iowa. President trump skipped out on the Stump Speeches but that did not stop him from becoming the main attraction. He was swarmed. President trump, did intend to over turn the 2020 election . You know the answer to that. Did you comply with the protective order from the judge . All right, lets discuss. Molly ball, you were just back from the iowa state fair. I i think you brought the i was sad to miss it this year. Ive been to many Buttered Kour cow sends her reguards. I want to give people a sense. This is the view from the ferris wheel surrounding donald trump. And for people who are uninitiated, the state fair is crowded but there is plenty of room to walk, typically. You wouldnt have too much trouble getting close to the candidate. Trump, that is not the case. Look at just absolutely look at that crowd. And i think we also have some pikes that we could show of a slightly more manageable crowd that was present at the Quote Unquote Fair side chat with ron desantis. Is that what were looking at or is this still trump . This is the crowd that was there for ron desantis. Not bad. But not quite the swarm that you saw for trump. Was that how you experienced it on the ground and what does that say about state of the race . Yeah, i mean, clearly trump is just a magnet for attention. Now i will say, he was appearing in a rather small sort of restaurant on the grounds of the fair. And so threaten room for a lot of people inside and for people to be in his vicinity, they had to crowd around outside and i counted as you could see if the photos, there were 30 deep at one point on all sides of that venue just straining to catch a glimpse or hear a little snippet of what he was saying. He spoke very briefly and roamed around very briefly and then back on off his plane. But it symbolized the way donald trump is the center of attention in the primary and the way his Quasiincumbent Status gives us a platform none of the other candidates have. They cannot compete with that level of attention as i remember trying to teach my 3yearold, attention could about he good or bad. Not all attention is good attention. A lesson that donald trump never learned in his childhood. But that being said, that is, i think, the biggest problem for all of the candidates. Trump just has that ability to draw a crowd. Although, in some ways, all press is good press. The old adage is that the toddler version, is that anything goes. One of challenges as you were outlining that, is that these people running against trump are sort of constrains in their ability to criticize him because the base is to fervent. The trolling from the Trump Campaign in iowa, do we have the airplane that flew with the be likeable ron. And there is a lot jokes. It ises a reference to his own notes to him sx aself and that e same font as jeb who was the first candidate that trump crushed on his way to the white house. This is the trump Campaign Going after his top rival, ron desantis, and ron desantis cant do anything like this. Well, that is what they view as his biggest fall, desantis, trying to make him seem not that personable and awkward and you see that repeatedly. And youre right, trump, any other republican in the field, had been indicted, what trump would say about them. When others have said that in the past, he slashed them. And a lot of them are defending trump. You have Chris Christie who has been pretty critical of trump pretty regularly. And asa hutchinson, but i dont think he has a lot of relevance in the republican primary field. Even mike pence at times has been critical at trump but has defended him as times as well. And others want to keep trump voters as liking them, potentially maybe as a second choice. Im not sure what the strategy is but they dont want to alienate these people so you dont criticize them. So you criticize everyone else. He criticized desantis sometimes many times a day and he goes after mike pence and everyone and the response back is fairly muted and i dont understand, and maybe others are smarter than me and will figure this out, how you will beat someone if youre unwilling to take them on. You cant beat someone with something with nothing. And i want to play, sarah has been talking to Republican Voters about ron desantis and that banner really underscores one of the central problems that were hearing from some of the voters. Take a look at what they had to say. When desantis said he was running, i was pretty happy about that. But hes getting killed in the polls. Hes kind of acted weird. Just seems like he lost all of Hi Confidence that he used to have when he was a governor. Something weird is going on. His personality changed. Hes not as mouthy as he used to be. There might be a couple of things about his personality that seem a little wooden. Weird and wooden. What else have you learned . Hes getting killed in the focus groups and not even that kind of criticism. We ask people, who do you want to see be the 2024 nominee . And six months ago ran desantis, he would always come up. People dont even mention him right now. Weve had two groups where nobody has said him name. Theyve said tim scott and Vivek Ramaswamim One Guy that liked him and said hes fine. Hes fine. That is brutal. Ringing endorsement. This is so interesting too, because is there another candidate in the gop right now who has tried to compete with trump in almost the trump lane as much as desantis. And were Hearing Comments like that. And were seeing his campaign go this way. Hes almost tried throughout this campaign to outtrump trump, to compete with him on the right and youre seeing voters disappointed with the performance. And this is all heading into the first debate where well learn this week whether or not trump will participate. I want to remind everybody who it was like last time when donald trump was on stage with some of the other candidates and how we saw this phenomenon that we just talked about play out. Think youre on the wrong side of this. If youre still arguing for a single i dont think you heard me. Excuse me. One sec. You cannot take more energy tonight. Donald, relax. Im relaxed. Youre the basket case. Doan worry about it little marco. Im having ptsd from 2016. But theyre all doing that again. Like ron desantis and these other candidates are building the Permission Structure for voters to not care about Donald Trumps indictments because they rush to his defense and as a result, as you were saying earlier, they become big players at the center of the stage and there is no oxygen for anybody else and that is how trump is walking to in nomination. And, i mean, molly ball, Abortion Rights add vocates aren a roll here. There is no sign since we had a test on this in a ballot in kansas in 2022 after this was over turned. Look at this number. 3 Million People turned out in this oo special election. That is nearly double the number that votes in the primary in 2022. 1. 6 Million People. People really care about this. Yes. So on the one hand, the evidence continues to mount in case there was any doubt that this is a pow powerfully galvanizing issue and it hits voters where they live. Every human being has the opportunity to reproduce in some way so this is an issue that touches every person, every american and people clearly feel that urgency and clearly are on the generally the prochoice side. And we see disarray on the other side. Republicans not having figured out whether or how they could mount a winning argument in the other direction. On the other hand, we do see the Ballot Initiatives that are single issue where abortion is the central issue doing much better than candidatesg to put it at the center of their campaigns. Lets put that up here because we ha comparison for how the Ballot Measure performed, in ohio, kansas and kentucky have had this test, the Abortion Test on their ballot. Look at ho compare to the candidates. The Ballot Initiatives and what biden earned in this states in so when you look at these numbers, sarah, one of the things democrats are thinking about is making sure this is an issue on the ballot in places like florida and arizona. If you were advising them on how to win here, there seems to be some tension in the party between people who want to tie this to their candidates, try to help their candidates and others who say no, this issue is too important all by itself. We need to use the blueprint we had in kansas where it was a nonpartisan issue where it took a different tone. If youre trying to advise them how would you im advising democrats now . Yes. It does turn people out. One of things that ive been thinking about though, if it was ron desantis on the ballot in 2024, where hes pushed a sixweek abortion ban, i think that abortion works for dems than at a national level. That is interesting. But if it is trump. Hes a social moderate. Where people dont see him as a cultural warrior on things such abortion and if trump is not at the top of the ticket and someone else. And let me show over who we have from the republican field. We have mike pence and donald trump and ron desantis talking about the abortion issue. Take a look. I believe that time has come as we advance the cause of life in every state in the nation, that we embrace a minimum National Standard of 15 weeks for all of the american people. The greatest progress for prolife is now being plemade i the states where everyone wanted it to be. That is one of the reasons they waned roe v. Wade terminated. It remains a vital role for the federal government in protecting unborn life. We have a diverse country on this issue. There will be debates and i think it will be locally and have a bottom up movement. And that last comment is interesting. This is tough for republicans to talk about. And the Republican Party is all over the place on this. Desantis passed a bill in florida that said it was not helpful to him. And you have mcdaniel and others trying to embrace a 15week ban. But the polling has shown in republican circles that ive seen of polling that most people do not like overturning roe v. Wade even higher numbers than what you have on the screen, and the Republican Party is really trying some of its leaders are trying to get a message on abortion because right now they dont seem to have one.
