The Election Year . And hawaiis governor says more than 1,000 people are still potentially missing as fema is acknowledging challenges with the Relief Efforts there, well get an update from a top official and a new look at the harrowing scenes on the ground. Im kaitlan collins. This is the source. We begin with exclusive new reporting on the hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees that Rudy Giuliani is now staring down and the desperate attempts he has made to get former President Trump to cover them. With his attorney in tow, im told that Rudy Giuliani traveled to maralago in late april on a mission to make a personal appeal to trump to pay his legal bills. By going in person, giuliani and that lawyer, Robert Costello believed they could help explain face to it is if a why trump needled to assist his attorney with those ballooning legal bills. They argued that really, it was in trumps best interests to do so. But apparently, it fell on deaf ears. Trump is notoriously strict about digging into list own coffers. He did not seem very interested, im told, in covering everything that giuliani and costello wanted. One source said he verbally agreed to help but he didnt commit to any specific amount or time line. Another source tells me that trump really only agreed to pay a small fee from a data vendor that was hosting giulianis records. Im told it was about 340,000. In total, giulianis legal fees are in the sevenfigure range. His trip to maralago has not been previously reported. Were telling you about it here tonight. It does indicate the level of stress that hes been facing for months. Some in trumps circle were surprise by his unwillingness to pay giulianis bills, given he could find himself under pressure to cooperate with state and now federal prosecutors who have charged trump. Giuliani sat down voluntarily with jack smiths team this sumner two back to back sessions. Hes now a codefendant in the Election Interference Case in georgia. He is facing 13 criminal charges, like trump, and potentially serious prison time. Its not out of character for trump to not want to pay legal fees. This is something weve heard from many of his attorneys in the past, including his former attorney Michael Cohen. When i sat down with him last month. History repeats itself. One thing we know for certain is that donald does not pay legal fees. He doesnt pay fees at all. There is a pattern to what he does. He will pay a little bit. Fall behind. Pay a little more. Fall bigger behind. Im joined now by the former white House Counsel under president nixon, john dean. Good to see you again. What do you make when you hear that Rudy Giuliani is going to maralago, making this desperate plea, trying to get trump to pay for his legal fees and trump not really reciprocating on most of that. I think that trump is aware that during watergate, for example, the payment of legal fees got lawyers in a lot of trouble, as did joint defense agreements. The fact that hes not paying though is a pattern of this man as michael just said. He just doesnt like to pay his bills. He will get people to come after him to pay the fees. Michael had to go to court to get his fees paid. So theres no surprise here. And trump, i think, is willing to tough it out. He doesnt think rudy will flip. Thats a concern. The Michael Cohen effect. People have said that cohen has changed his tactics there because of a concern of it turning into a Michael Cohen situation. I doubt that rudy will. He knows the Inner Workings of the system better than most of the u. S. Attorneys from the Southern District of new york. He knows particularly the rico law. He will try to poke holes. He will think he can prevail. Certainly at the motion stage, the early stage of this proceeding, is not likely to flip. It is only if the government of georgia can overwhelm him and he realizes hes going down and maybe he can save himself some years by cracking a deal. I sat down with bill barr, trumps former Attorney General, of course, as you know, the other week. And he had this to say about what he has seen he said happened to people in trumps orbit. He leaves in his wake ruined lives like this, the people who went up to capitol hill, these individuals, many of the people who served in the government that got sucked into things. He just leaves all this carnage in his wake. Do you think he cares . No. He doesnt care. Loyalty is a oneway street for him. Do you think Rudy Giuliani winds up as more carnage here if he hasnt already in some peoples view . I think he will. I think hes in deep trouble. The governments case looks overwhelming. His federal issues have that been resolved. Trump could not pardon him in georgia, if indeed he is convicted in georgia. I dont think trump will make it back to the white house. I think people are starting to get a glimmer of what that could be and they dont want it. Maybe more republicans will do that before the primary vote. I dont know. Theyre slow learners, apparently. So i think rudy will get destroyed by this. Its sad but true. Yeah. If he is as out of money as his attorney was arguing in court today that he is, the entire reason his attorney was in court was arguing that he could not pay part of what he is being ordered to pay as part of the lawsuit. What does dough in that situation . Does he represent himself . What options does Rudy Giuliani have at that point . Well, he can get a courtappointed lawyer. Representing yourself is the worst option. Anyone who represents himself is likely to make bad decisions about that representation. I think rudy is likely to go into chapter 11, a bankruptcy of some sort. I understand his apartment is on the market. It could raise several million dollars. He probably has a lot of debt he has to handle immediately as well. So i think bankruptcy is a potential. And maybe a courtappointed attorney. That would be kind of remarkable in the worst way, as someone who was once known as managers mayor. The role that he had after 9 11 is then potentially, as you predict could happen, being represented by a courtappointed attorney and filing bankruptcy to cover his legal fees. It has a shakespearean element about it. I dont really think of shakespeare when i look at rudy and some of the news clips of him recently. It has that kind of tragic tale that is being told in front of us. So well have to watch. No one wishes him ill. Hes gotten himself where he is. What do you make of what we saw in georgia overall . The District Attorney saying she wants to have a march trial date. Shes asking for March 4th Of A Trial date. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. Does that seem realistic given the nature of this case, how complex it is . Begin that there are 19 codefendants here . I think what will slow down the georgia case, others will file the kind of motion that mark meld owes has filed to remove it to federal court. While the State Proceedings will continue, it will bogg things down a bit. I dont really believe with my talk with lawyers who have really studied this body of law, that they will remove it to federal court. If they do, its still the same georgia prosecutors. And the calendar could be even clearer at the federal level. I dont know. It is a different jury pool. Broader, wider. That is what is likely to slow it down. So you dont think that theyre likely going to be able to get it moved from a State Proceeding as mark meadows is doing, but were told by sources that trump is also likely to do. You dont think thats likely . I dont. Its hard to envision this as official behavior of any of the people. When you read that indictment, you read what is being included. Mark meadows was not just setting up meetings. He was not arranging telephone calls. Thats done by secretaries, staffers, white house operators. He is in the thick of this. And as the indictment brings out, it is much different than his motion. So i dont think theyll prevail. And many of them dont even have federal standing to remove. Those who are the fake electors, for example. And its just limited to those who were in federal office when these events happened. Yeah. And to bring this full circle, Rudy Giuliani has said, he is going to potentially make that argument though. He obviously did not work for the federal government. Well see what the courts decide. John dean, thank you for your perspective tonight. Thank you. So as we noted, even Rudy Giulianis attorney is saying that he is essentially broke and that donald trump is not going to be helping anymore, we are told by sources. That seems in stark contrast to the millions that giuliani once made working for trump. Actually, 9. 5 million in 2017. 5 million in 2018. That was according to disclosures made during his divorce. The connection between giulianis reputation and the fate of trump are so intertwined. Everyone remembers when giuliani stood in front of the soon to be Mob On January 6th and said this. If were wrong, we will be made fools of. But if were right, a lot of them will go to jail. So lets have trial by combat. Im willing to stake my reputation. The president is willing to stake his reputation on the fact that were going to find criminality there. If youre surprised to hear about the struggles giuliani is having financially, you probably shouldnt be. Money problems make sense when you take a step back and look at how much legal trouble the new york mayor, the former mayor of new york, is facing. A 2. 7 billion Defamation Suit. Giuliani already owes 90,000 as punishment for not complying with an order to turn over records in a separate suit in which he acknowledged making false comments about Election Workers. His former assistant has tapes and texts and now the 13 criminal charges that the Fulton CountyDistrict Attorney brought this week against giuliani, trump, and 17 others. It doesnt stop there. All of this is coming as giuliani is also facing disbarment proceedings, both here in new york and in washington. That means that right now he cannot make money from practicing law. Giuliani has firmly embraced his role as the face of trumps election lies. Something trump himself personally ordered. He spent months speaking at increasingly bizarre Press Conferences. Ris reputation today is not what it once it was. He stood outside the four seasons total landscaping pushing election lies like this one. After all, joe frazier is still voting here. Kind of hard since he died five years ago. But joe continues to vote. Before that happened, before we were at four seasons total landscaping in philadelphia, he was the mayor that america watched walk through The Cloud Of Dust on 9 11. Who graced the cover of Time Magazine as a, quote, tower of strength. He was once the most popular politician in the country and at the time, the leading candidate for the republican nomination. His incredible climb started with the same type of law that he is now charged under in the state of georgia. This is a man who, according to the new york time, in 1989, quote, long asersed that he invented the use of the racketeer corrupt organizations act known as rico to pursue the mafia commission. He was so associated with the law when cnn did a story in 1988, giuliani was the face of a wave of rico prosecutions. The racketeer act called rico for short. Passed by congress in 1970, prosecutors love it. The activities of organized crime, the drug dealing, extortion, labor racketeering, the murders, executions, theyve been around a long time. The government until now has been virtually ineffective in dealing with it. Its a legacy he is still clinging to even now. Im the same Rudy Giuliani going after the mafia. I havent changed one bit. Few people know exactly how much Rudy Giuliani has indeed changed more than my next guest. He has literally written the book, two of them, actually, on the former mayor. Well see what he thinks happened to Rudy Giuliani right after this. Limited time flavor. New crispy dragon shrimp. One of seven endless choices for just 20. Right now, only at red lobstere. On a night when we were just talking about Rudy Giulianis desperate pleas to get trump to pay for his legal bills, falling on deaf ears at maralago, lets look at what a fall it has been for the former mayor of new york. The author of giuliani, the rise and fall. You just heard us talking about the troubles hes facing. Now trying to sell his manhattan place. This is a very different giuliani than the one when you first started covering him, the way he was living. How he was doing. Sure. He used to buy his suits off the rack at rothmans for 400 a piece. People around him would comment how money was so not important to him. It was all about power to him. What changed was 9 11. Right . He became one of the most beloved people on the planet. The poll said he was more popular than the pope at one point. And he opened up a consulting coil, giuliani parters in, that made 100 million in five years. He became stratospherally healthy. He bought six houses, 11 country club memberships. 11 . 11. His exwife spoke to me at length for my book. There was a quote in the book which was kind of amusing and harrowing. We were spending 250,000 a month on sheer fun. I mean, he was living a very, very lavish lifestyle. Spent it recklessly. Destroyed judith giuliani. Gave a lot away. And now the legal bills, hes just drowning in legal bills. The fact that donald trump wont bail him out is just absolutely tragic. 340,000. Were told he has seven figures in legal fees hes facing. Yeah. Hes being sued for defamation, right . Hes under criminal, under indictment. A criminal investigation in d. C. There are civil suits against him. The Election Worker in atlanta is suing him. Hes representing himself in some cases. Hes burning through his money. Youve covered him their years. Does this surprise you . Nothing surprises me when it comes to Rudy Giuliani. I mean, the reason ive been covering him for 30 years is that hes such a complex over the top, larger than life figure. He is an opera fan. Hes kind of a, life is an opera. You know, almost heescapes deat on 9 11. He busted the mob. Ran for president. Had this extraordinary flameout in 2008. He goes to ukraine. Leads to one president ial impeachment. A second impeachment. There is no story like Rudy Giuliani. His is one of, i guess, the most extraordinary political rise and fall stories of our time. So what happened to him . That is the question for people who saw him at the white house, when he was having the Press Conference where his hair dye is running down his face. What happened to Rudy Giuliani . I think in a word, it was desperation. I think that his rise to power was so extraordinary. A hero prosecutor, a hero mayor, a president ial candidate leading in the polls for a full year in 2008 in the republican primary. He lasted just eight weeks in the republican primary. Drops out in total humiliation with only one delegate, and falls from grace. He loses his 9 11 halo and suddenly, hes out in the wilderness. Who come to his rescue but donald trump . And you know, he literally houses him in maralago soon after the election. Deappreciation he
