While there was a rare show of bipartisan cooperation, Republican Dysfunction In The House is ramping up this week. Maga hardliners there are expected to try to oust House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy and outraged over his deal with the democrats to keep the government funded and from capitol hill to the wouse were following all of the fallout from yesterdays dramatic turn of events melanie zanona, on set here with me in washington and Arlette Saenz is over at the white house. Let me go to you first. President biden spoke on this deal today and commented on the ugly politics of it all. Sensing that there is a large measure of disgust across the country on the part of the American People after all of this. What was his message. Reporter well, jim, President Biden said it is good news that a Government Shutdown was averted but said it is time for congress to get to work so they dont have a repeat of this same scenario when this next funding deadline in about 45 days approaches. Now, the white house had really maintained this handsoff approach when it came to negotiations. But when you saw the white house try to exert this external pressure on House Speaker mccarthy and that is something that President Biden repeated again today. When he called on mccarthy and House Republicans to adhere to those Budget Agreements that they had come to a deal on back in the spring as they averted that debt default. But one thing the president did talk about is how the American Public is tired of the brinksmanship that has been occurring up on capitol hill and that Congress Needs to avert a quote, manufactured crisis another time. Im sick and tired of the brinksmanship. And so are the American People. There is no excuse for another crisis. Consequently, i strongly urge my republican friends in congress not to wait. Dont waste time as you did all summer. Pass a year long budget agreement, honor the deal we made a few months ago. Reporter now, in addition to getting and securing an additional Funding Agreement for a longer period of time, the president is also facing the challenge of securing more aid for ukraine. That was something that was dropped from this bill that was passed yesterday. Amid some opposition amongst hardline republicans. The president said that time is running short for the aid to be begin to ukraine and you also heard him trying to assure allies that the aid would be there even though there is not yet a path forward set out for providing further aid to ukraine. Yeah, that is going to be a big battle ahead. Arlette saenz, thank you very much over at the white house. And House SpeakerKevin Mccarthy is now facing the wrath of his own party after working with democrats to avert a shutdown. Matt gaetz said he plans to seek a mccarthys removal from the speakership. Melanie zanona is here to explain. This is uncertain how this will proceed. But it sounds like matt gaetz is going to make good on this threat that this process is going to start and republicans in the house will find themselves smack dab in another one of these bouts of infighting. Right in the middle of the gop civil war. With gaetz, he wants to win. He does not want to use this threat and have it fail because then he becomes a paper tiger. So hes been trying to reach out to democrats and see where they fall and get hardline conservatives behind him and what do democrats do. Because they could potentially step in and throw him a life line. Now based on the conversations i had with democrats, most of them are not wanting to save Kevin Mccarthy, because they dont trust him, they dont like that he launched an Impeachment Inquiry but there is a scenario where some of the moderate democrats step in and vote present or to table which would reject the effort. But he was asked about where liz votes were and what happens if democrats bail out mccarthy. I want to take a listen to what he said. Here is the thing. Im done owning Kevin Mccarthy. We made a deal at in january to allow imhad to assume the speakership and im not owning nim hi more because he didnt tell the truth. So if democrats want to own Kevin Mccarthy by bailing him out, but hell be their speaker not mine. And this is about spending an the deal Kevin Mccarthy made. You could hear gaetz setting it up. So if he wins, obviously he gets what he wants which is Ousting Mccarthy and if he fails hell frame this as this is the democratic speaker who needed democrats to support him. So hes setting himself up for the likelihood this could fail on the floor. But it sounds like were in the hallways of a high school. Im done owning Kevin Mccarthy. That is the kind of language that matt gaetz is using. Does he think he will pull enough people in his direction to oust mccarthy from speakership . He has to know this is a numbers game as well. And that is why his camp is pretty confident that hell be able to beat this just like he did back in january. Yes, it took 15 grueling rounds of votes to get there. But they did and that is because no other person in the republican conference can get to 18. There is no clear alternative or no one behind the scenes trying to whip votes and that is the challenge for gaetz and the hardliners and Kevin Mccarthy was on today and here is what he had to say about it. Yeah, ill survive. You know, this is personal with matt. Matt voted against the most conservative ability to protect our border, secure our border. Hes more Interested In securer Tv Interviews than doing something. He wanted to push us into a shutdown and threatening his district with all of the military people there not being paid only because he wanted to take this motion. So be it, lets get over with it and start governing. If hes upset and i made sure government didnt shutdown, then lets have that fight. You could cut the tension between those two with the knife. Theyve had a tense relationship for a long time and this is a fight that has been brewing for weeks if not months and both sides are ready for the showdown. Melanie zanona, thank you very much. Joining me now is democratic congresswoman Debbie Wassermanschultz of florida. I have two people here on set with me to start off the show. This is an embarrassment of riches. It is terrific. Jumping off of what melanie was talking about, if it comes down to democrats having to save Kevin Mccarthy, what will happen . Will democrats vote for that . If there is anything that is certain after Kevin Mccarthy broke his word about the Debt Ceiling Deal if the spring, after putting a bill on the floor that would have had 30 cuts that a million seniors would have gone without nutrition, 250,000 children would have lost childcare. What you could definitely conclude is that the American People will be done owning the republican party. And having republicans lead the house of representatives. We have to make sure that we could govern and govern responsibly. And giving the republicans any power, which is the only thing that Kevin Mccarthy and republicans care about, that is very evident, that is irresponsible on our part. So im going to make a decision based on knowing that i have to be able to effectively represent smi constituents and make sure we could take care of them and the republicans could care less about that. And i wonder if mccarthy was trying to send democrats to the other side of the aisle by embracing this compromise at the 11th hour yesterday and sweeten the pot for democrats to butter things up a little bit perhaps. Lets be very clear. That is not going to work. The reason that we didnt shut the government down is because democrats are the responsible adults in the room. Weve always been there, through this process, to make sure that we didnt crash our economy into a cliff by blowing the debt ceiling. That we made sure that we didnt crash the economy by causing a Government Shutdown. Were not going to have irresponsible cuts that wasnt the c. R. , it was a republican giveaway to maga extremists. And on top of that, Kevin Mccarthy is pursuing an impeachment of President Biden with no evidence. Their own witnesses this week acknowledged that there is no impeachment warranted because there is no evidence. This is not a person who should be given the keys to making the major decisions that effect millions of peoples lives. And this measure that was passed yesterday, in the house and senate signed by the president only keeps government running for 45 days. Might we find ourselves in this place in 45 days in. If nothing changes, then, yes. We have 45 days to go right to its brink again. We cant end up there. We have a Debt Ceiling Deal and it had top lines that the majority of congress and President Biden agreed to. That is where we need to start with. And that is the kind of work that we need to do over the next six weeks. And are you confident that ukraine aid will be passed in some way, shape or form between now and the end of the year. That is something that the president said he wants to see passed at some point. But in order to get this measure passed yet, it was switched out. The majority of the house and Senate Support continuing aid to ukraine. You cant let a dangerous tyrant like putin crash through a sovereign nation and try to take it over. It jeopardized our National Security and of our allies and mccarthy needs to make sure he puts a bill on the floor and let the members vote and that is how well send the bill to the president. And i want to talk about Congressman Dean Phillips is stepping down from House Leadership. He said there are some differences between himself and House Leadership over his position that President Biden should have a democratic challenger for the 2024 democratic nomination. What is your sense of that . What do you make of that . I think dean realized and im a member of the House Leadership as well and that he needed to tep down given that hes out of step with the majority of the democratic caucus. Because we know that joe biden has made sure that we could pull ourselves out of the covid19 pandemic, we were able to pass significant infrastructure legislation and preduce Prescription Drug costs and creating a Record Number of jobs, if we have a member of the elected leadership that doesnt align with that, then it made sense for him to step aside. Was phillips asked to step aside or was it suggested. In the meetings that ive been in with dean with the leadership, he he was taking steps toward realizing on his own that this was something that it was incongruous for hip to remain in democratic leadership because he feels so strongly about this. But i have tremendous respect for him and hes a dear friend of mine. We fight sidebyside on the u. S. And israel relationship and antisemitism and hell continue doing a great job representing his constituents which is what he should continue to do. Our democrat colleague jamal bowman pulling the fire alarm. He said this was a mistake. Hes come out with a couple of different statements trying to explain what happened here. What do you make of this . Do you buy his excuse for what took place here . Does there need to be an investigation . I take Congressman Bowman at his word and that he was confused and trying to get out of the door. The doors that are in cannon are in a circular room in the cannon rotunda. That is where my office too and it could get confusing when youre trying to get out, which direction you should go. But the hypocrisy of the republicans who are willing and voted against expelling george santos, who is a criminal and a liar, but they want to they immediately leap to expulsion for someone who pulled a fire alarm. I think accidentally. I marine, please. This shows you that they are in such chaos and disarray and have no agenda, and they brought our economy and our country to the brink of Government Shutdown. Of course, theyre going to distract by suggesting we should expel someone who accidentally tripped the fire alarm in one of our Office Buildings that, by the way, wasnt the building where our actual vote was taking place. And the other thing is if there was a thought that he was trying to delay things, i dont understand why he would think that, because it is a different building. And also, democrats wanted to see this get passed. So right. That is the thing i dont understand from his explanation in all of this. It just doesnt i will tell you, if you go in that room take a rook into the cannon rotunda. There are three or four doors. It is confusing which one is the door, if youre in a hurry i could see that his explanation is plausible. If we want to investigate it further, that is what they should do. But for republicans to leap to expulsion and vote, which they did, not to expel one of their own members who is a krcriminal and a liar and misrepresented everything about himself to his own constituents during the election, the hypocrisy is rich. What are your thoughts . Are you going to support matt gaetzs effort to remove mccarthy at speaker and could this play out this week . Well i will just say that what we saw happen yesterday was a repeat of past failures by Republican Leadership and frankly that is what january was about. What i most spoke about back in january during the speaker contest is that we couldnt do what weve done the last 10, 15 years when republicans had the majority which was to pass major Spending Billing with a predominant majority of democrat votes and that is what happened yesterday. And i urge my republican colleagues, all 220 of my colleagues along with the speaker that we cannot fear a Government Shutdown to the degree that we will do anything to avoid a Government Shutdown and frankly that is what yesterday was. Yesterday was a capitulation where he did an unconditional 45 day continuing resolution, keeping in place, bureaucrating the country with 200 monthly deficit so it was a failure of leadership and we should pass the Spending Bills and not kicking the can down the road. We should have the no relieved the pressure unnecessarily and the oath reason we passed the four Spending Bills that we did, and i remind you, the house has done four Spending Bills but Speaker Mccarthy committed we could do all 15 and vote on a balanced budget this year and weve done neither one of those. So you want him out . Well, i was concerned about him as speaker as you know. As well on record during january because of the failures of the past. This is a repeat of the failures and what im focused on at the moment is trying to put pressure on to pass our bills. Im glad were coming back this week. Lets see if we have the commitment to cut back to precovid Level Spending out of the house as he committed in january as we voted to do that as a House Majority in april, trying to cut 100 billion on an annual basis when were running a 2 trillion deficit and to implement our republican conservative policies that were reversed along the democrats that are doing in the country. So i guess, you just havent made up your mind yet, or what . What . Youve been a critic of Kevin Mccarthy for sometime now. Why not say youre linking arms with matt gaetz and
