The break news right now from the white house to the war zone. President biden this evening is leaving washington for israel and this is where in the last few hours that our crew is on the ground has seen explosions outside of gaza. This is askelon, israel, just on to border of gaza. And also, new israeli air strikes in gaza, and we want to show you new video coming in from gaza and the aftermath and the moments after these strikes and you can see the scene of devastation of the barrage coming in. John . And this is gaza here obviously and askelon is close the where gaza is and where israeli tarts are. And some of the israeli air strikes on gaza have been here, and this is a southern city, and rafah and not far from the Rafah Crossing where people of gaza are told to move to, and this is where the air strikes are told to take place, and perhaps israel is targeting Hamas Terrorists are interspersing themselves with civilians to disguise themselves. Now we go to sara sidner in tel aviv, and a major city in israel with the latest of what you are seeing. Hello, friends, this is sara sidner in tel aviv with a lot more of what is happening here in tel aviv, and this is what is happening here and the mother of a french hostage who has been making a urgent plea to the entire world. Her daughter, 21yearold daughter who was kidnapped from the Music Festival earlier in the month where at least 260 bodies were found in the aftermath of the initial hamas attack. I attended a Press Conference that her mother karen held today. I want you to listen to this mother who for the very first time saw that her daughter was alive. No one knew anything since saturday and yesterday, this video was september out by hamas of her daughter talking to the camera. She had a bandage on her arm, and she had been clearly injured in a very bad way, but she was alive and here is what her mother said today. I started to shout, and i fell on the floor and i started to scream. I didnt really knew anything. I saw my baby. And then it became that we started to sing and cry and wow, she is alive and wow, to be so happy and then i started to be so scared. My message to my daughter is that i love her so much and i miss her so much, and this day i thought how i am going to be hugging her when she is coming home. That is what kept me strong and, you know, focused. Strong and focussed in the most dire of circumstances. That is karen schem and her daughter mia kidnapped by hamas and the very first hostage that people saw in video that sent out in social media to see that she was still alive. We know that there are about 199 hostages that the Israeli Defense forces say they believe are in gaza. I want to bring in cnns Clarissa Ward and Jeremy Diamond with me here, and go to clarissa who is in askelon, and i know that you are experiencing explosions in your area in the last few hours, and what more can you tell us . That is right, sara. It has been pretty quiet for most of the day and then a barrage of rockets that came towards this city, askelon every single day, and this is different though, because it is leading to that weak account that was intercepted and that did not make contact, and this is what it sounded like early on. [ explosion ] and you can hear the iron dome making contact, and you can hear them saying this is revenge for the continued strikes on gaza, and i wanted to point out that in gaza there is no iron dome and relentless bombardment for yet another day there including strikes as you heard john berman talking about the southern part of the gaza strip, and this is where the Israeli Forces that you had heard people move to, and you are hearing of six strikes right next to the Rafah Crossing, and nearly 3,000 people killed, and we had spoken to a 22 dentistry student, and she from the northern part of gaza, and she and her family were ready to move to the south, but they were having difficulties to find a place that had electricity or beds or a room, but after todays strikes they are simply too nervous to move to the south, because it does not appear to be safe, sara. Clearly, nowhere is safe in such a densely populated area. Clarissa ward, thank you so much for your excellent reporting throughout this entire conflict. Jeremy diamond is joining us from jerusalem, and jeremy, looking at the political aspect, because President Biden is expected to leave the white house today and arrive in israel at some point tomorrow. What more can you tell us about at the plans when he arrives here in israel . Well, listen, the israeli officials are certainly welcoming his plans to visit as a show of solidarity with israel parly at a critical time as israeli officials are making it clear that they are preparing for a significant Ground Operation inside of gaza, but beyond the show of support, president is also coming here for a practical and very concrete reasons as well. Top of the list is or certainly among the top of the item of the list is the Deterrence Items is the Solidarity Lists with israel to show to iran that they may see this israelhamas war to exploit it and turn it into a broader regional conflict, and the president is coming here as a deterrence of factor in the same way that sending two Aircraft Carriers to the region, and putting 2,000 marines and sailors on high alert and all of that on the same message, but also a message of whether the president is coming here with a concrete deliverable. We know that typically when a president visits is someone after the secretary of state, it is typically something is in the works or something for the president of the United States to announce. We know there are discussionsf getting humanitarian aid to gaza or out of gaza, and we know there is also some american hostages held in gaza. So the merp president is going to have a meeting with the president in tel aviv and then go to imman and meet with the president of jordan there. And people are clamoring to get out of gaza. We appreciate your reporting there from jerusalem, and also for our Clarissa Ward who was in askelon previously. And also, talking about the u. S. Deterrence, and there are two u. S. Carriers there, and the u. S. S. Eisenhower there, and uss ford. And also, we know that the bataan group as well. And now, joining us is spider marks, and you are noting that there is a level of Potential Compatibility between the u. S. Forces and the Israel Defense forces, and what do you mean . John, the United States and israel has a very Long Exercise Program and a very long program, and Historical Program of cooperation, and routine efforts on intelligence exchange, Maneuver Forces and marines working with other elements within the idf and u. S. Forces working routinely with the idf and in other words, there a level of trust at multiple levels where the United States and israel have worked together in the past. So when the carrier battle group, the strike group shows up, the both of those will remain on station for a while. There is interconnection between the capabilities and what the idf brings there in the ground and in the air, and so it is those levels of support exist and will exist immediately once they are in station. Spider, i want a sense of what is going on inside of gaza over the last, i dont know several hours, and we have been getting word that there are israeli air strike, and we can come to the map to see that there aare israeli air strikes o know where people have been moving to areas here in the north also, but the question that a lot of people are asking is why. If israel told people to evacuate here, why then would they be striking in that region . There are legit targets in gaza, and israel has the right to go after them irrespective of where they are located except going through the Collateral Damage estimates necessary before you strike. So, although you want to get as many civilians away from the northern portion of gaza as you can, there is still legitimate targets, and it is not up likely that hamas is trying to integrate itself into the civilian migration to the south so that they can live and fight another day, and everything in the south is completely off limits, then you have hamas leadership potentially that is going to be intermingled and completely intermipgled with that and going untouched. Some of the pictures are Northern Gaza where the israeli strikes are taking place and Northern Gaza, and spider is bringing up the possibility of the military wing could be integrating with the wing that has been integrated in past. Now, spider, in this array of nogo zone all around gaza with armor and infantry, and what are they doing in these days prior to what could be invasion . These are what we call the precombat inspections and checks, and that pci or the absolute final steps of preparation before you conduct a military operation. Does everyone in the organization understand the larger purpose of what we are trying to achieve and does every subordinate element within the Larger Organization understand what their specific tasks are in order to achieve the larger purpose. So this is the very focus, final step of some type of what we call Crossing Line of departure in conducting Military Operations on ground, and bear in mind not only on the ground, but the air cover above and connectivity of the cyber connections, and to advance any one of the initial movements. Major general james spider marks, thank you very much h. Kate . House republicans are ready to head to the house floor to vote for the speaker, and does the candidate have the amount of votes needed. So, does he have the votes . Will there be a House Speaker today . Jim jordan taking case to the floor very soon. We have the latest whip count from our man, the chief Congressional Correspondent manu raju, and is he or is he not, manu . Well, doesnt have the votes yet, and just short of the 217 votes necessary, but he is pressing ahead and plans to have the vote on the house floor to see how many members will vote against him, because he can only afford in the first vote to lose three. And we expect five or ten no votes, because the members are simply not saying where they will come down, and driving tension is everything that happened over the last two week, the historic ouster of Kevin Mccarthy as speaker of the house, and the elevation of jim jordan pushed by the very same members who sought and successfully got Kevin Mccarthy out of the job. Some members do not want to reward the hardliners by elevating jim jordan and they plan to vote against him even if there is pushback from some of jim jordans key allies. Feelings are hurt, but jim didnt have anything to do with that, and they need to assign the ire, if you will, to those who they believe who deserve it, but not jim jordan. I cant get past the fact that a small group in conference violated the rules to get rid of kevin, and then blocked steve. You will have a process where i play by the rules and other people cant, and they get what they want, and this is not america. You get the idea of expanding powers, and do you support that idea . I dont. Reporter that last comment from Patrick Mchenry who is the interim House Speaker, and there is discussion trying to move from the resolution of sorts to prop up mchenrys powers to oversee the legislative process to break the stalemate, and he tells me that he does not support it at the moment, but if it falters, and they cannot get jordan over the finish line, that is one of the options they will discuss as the house for the second straight week is paralyzing this republican infighting. And my favorite part is you crouching and sneaking up to get mchenrys reaction. Well done as always. And keep us posted if the count changes, manu. Yes, this is changing quickly. And joining us is michael mccaul, and chairman, thank you for joining us. On the speakers race, you came out of the meeting with the republicans saying that you will support jim jordan and what got you to place that you are comfortable with that . Well, i had a very good conversation with him, and i was concerned about National Security issues, particularly if we pass an israeli supplemental National Security bill, would ukraine included in that, and i was assured that he could link the two. He would look at the details of it, but it was very important to me, but most importantly, kate, we cant afford to not have a speaker in the chair. We have to govern, and looking at what is unfolding in israel, my committee does authorization of the use of the Military Force and if we dont have a speaker in the chair, we cant pass any of this stuff. Jordan has a unique capability to govern his caucus, the freedom caucus, and primarily the eight who ousted Kevin Mccarthy. Now, i dont like to rewarding bad behavior, dont get me wrong, but i dont like dysfunction either. So i think that we need a functional government right now in such a dangerous time while the world is on fire. Yeahk i mean, the stakes clearly seem to have increased quite a bit on getting the act together if you will with what we are seeing happen in israel right now. Do you think that is your assessment then is that this paralysis is going to end today, and the Speakerless House will be over today . You know, i dont have a crystal ball. I was disappointed that Kevin Mccarthy got ousted. I thought that kevin was doing a very good job managing all of the various factions. I right now the vote count doesnt look entirely promising, but i think that jim jordan is going to make, and put it in several rounds on the floor. He is very tenacious. So, that remains to be seen. If it does not work, then we are kind of back to, all right, maybe we should look at Kevin Mccarthy again. I just, all i can tell you, kate, the longer it drags out the more dangerous it is not just for the United States, but the world, because we are the leader. I wanted to ask you about this, because there are a lot of elements that you have a lot of information on with regard to what is going on in israel and first and foremost the humanitarian corridor or aid to getting in from the Rafah Crossing from egypt into gaza, and you are in touch with the humanitarian agencies and what do you know about this . I have talk to the qataris and the egyptians and the saudis and the world pfood program wit cindy mccain, and this what the president will mount on wednesday is the rafah gate on the southern border in egypt will be opened to allow americans and foreign nationals to escape out, and also the wounded, you know, palestinians as well. But the Rank And File palestinians the gate will be opened to allow humanitarian aid into gaza, because the World Food Program has always dealt in very warlike zones and they know how to do this, but we have to have the assurance of hamas that they wont steal the food and humanitarian aid going in and use for it the military uses. So for the sake of the 1 million children whose lives are at risk, we have to make it work. And finally, because the narrative is such that if you see children in Southern Gaza being impacted, that is going to light up hamas Narrative And Impact Hezbollah which is in lebanon and this is the Nightmare Scenarios that hezbollah gets involved with the 100,000 rockets. And speaking of the nightmarish scenario, and i heard that you are getting ready to authorize Necessary Force between israel and hamas if it broadens into a larger proxy war, and if that is not a statement of what is at risk and what is at stake and what you have to plan for right now, i dont know what is. I mean, what are the conditions to make it necessary . What are you hearing from the white house . Well, let me say that the first and most solemn obligation that we have in congress is under article i to the power to declare war, and in this case, the authorization of Military Force. I have been in contact with white house about this. They do not have authorities to hit hezbollah or hamas or any of irans proxies, even the iranbacked militias in iraq for instance. So this is something that we are looking at. As you know, Secretary Austin now has 2,000 marines and Expeditionary Forces off of the coast of, you know, gaza and israel and Northern Israel near hezbollah as a deterrent to insure that hezbollah does not invade isra
