By Mark Robertson Coastal Patrol Boat The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people on Monday (February 8th) who'd been on a deserted island in the Bahamas for 33 days, managing to stay alive by eating coconuts. Lieutenant Justin Dougherty told station WPLG, "I was amazed they were in as good as shape as they were." Coast Guard aircrews were doing routine patrols when they saw the two men and a woman, who are all Cuban nationals, waving makeshift flags on Anguilla Cay, which is located in a chain of islands between the Lower Florida Keys and Cuba. They dropped down a radio, food and water and returned the next day to rescue the castaways. The three Cubans said their boat capsized in rough waters about five weeks ago and they swam to the island.
